Have you ever seen someone make one decision and end up regretting it almost immediately?.... that is basically what happens in Rolling Loud.. this movie takes us into the world of hip hop music festivals, where one father wants to bond with his son but things quickly turn into a complete disaster.
The story follows Hank, played by Owen Wilson, a father who feels like he is slowly losing his connection with his 13 year son, Zion, his marriage too is also experiencing some difficulties, he can see that his son is growing up and becoming more independent, so Hank wants to be the kind of father his son can talk to, he is not exactly sure how to make that happen.
Then Zion expresses his desire to attend Rolling Loud, a hip hop music festival in Miami, the problem is that his mother, Melanie does not approve of the idea because she believes the festival is not an environment for a 13 year old boy....
Instead of accepting her decision, Hank decides to take matters into his own hands.... he tells Melanie that he and Zion are going to spend the weekend at a lake, but in reality he secretly takes his son to the festival...
At first Hank probably thinks he has finally found a way to become the dad his son wants, he gets to spend time with Zion enjoy the music and experience something his son genuinely loves, but there is one problem, Rolling Loud is not exactly a quiet family picnic.
The festival is packed with thousands of people, music, energetic fans and all kinds of unpredictable activities, the atmosphere is overwhelming and keeping track of someone in that crowd is already difficult enough.
Unfortunately Hank loses Zion in the middle of the festival...
Imagine taking your child to a place his mother specifically said he should not go, lying about the entire trip and then losing him in a crowd of thousands of people, how exactly do you explain that one?
Things become more complicated because Hank cannot simply ask the authorities for help without risking the truth coming out, so he has to find his son while hiding the fact that he brought him there in the place.
Thankfully Hank does not have to handle the madness alone, he teams up with Terry, his co-worker played by Matt Rife and Linda an eccentric festival volunteer played by Christine Ko.
Together they embark on a search through out the festival, However every attempt to find Zion seems to lead them into another situation, from mosh pits and backstage disasters to encounters with eccentric festivalgoers and a Ferris wheel Hanks search becomes more stressful and hilarious by the minute.
The movie also features appearances from real life music stars, including Travis Scott, Sexyy Red, Playboi Carti and Ty Dolla $ign giving the story a festival atmosphere.
Eventually Hank finds Zion and the boy is safe and having the time of his life, the experience teaches Hank something important, his real problem is not simply finding his son, it is learning to accept that Zion is growing up and developing interests of his own.
After sharing a moment together father and son rush back to the lake house hoping Melanie will not discover what actually happened...
For me the interesting part of Rolling Loud is the relationship, between Hank and Zion, because beneath all the comedy the movie explores how parents sometimes struggle to connect with children who are becoming more independent.
So If you enjoy comedy, hip-hop music and a storyline filled with one disaster after another this movie might be worth checking out, just don't expect a peaceful father and son outing.
