   Hello all animated movie lovers! For a while, the Dreamworks studio was offering us pretty good movies that could be close or on par with the Disney studio Pixar. However, it is no secret to anyone that Dreamworks had moved away a little from the creation of animated films, which had left many fans of their work wondering if they would bring new material in the future. Therefore, when previews and clips of its new productions began to appear, many of us remained in expectation, since the studio has proven to be capable of offering entertaining films, as is the case with Shrek and Kung was Panda. In this case, the film I will tell you about was on everyone's lips for a while due to the design of its characters and for appearing during the time when Disney's live action The Little Mermaid was being advertised.

   
   

   

   
   

   In a world where sea legends tell of the existence of mermaids and other marine creatures, humans live peacefully thinking that that's all it's about: Just myths. And the Gillman family, which is made up of Krakens, does their best to stay low profile, hiding their true aquatic nature, staying away from the sea and living like the rest of the citizens of "Oceanside". Ruby Gillman, the protagonist, is a teenager with problems typical of her age, such as trying to fit in in high school, hanging out with her friends or trying to get the attention of the boy she likes. And even though she obeys her mother Agatha in everything, things get complicated when they announce that the prom will be held on a boat on the high seas.    Despite her efforts to convince her, Ruby's mother insists that it is not a good idea to risk going to that party, since there are sea monsters in the sea that are willing to harm krakens like them. Ruby, tired of living a lie and with the constant fear of being discovered, she wishes not only to be able to know the ocean, but also to be able to be honest with those around her. Therefore, his spirits end up fading when he finds out that his friends, always willing to miss all the events (which being a coastal city, are related to the sea), to be on the girl's side, plan to attend. to the dance, since it is the prom and they insist Rudy take the risk of going too. Rudy ends up giving in and carried away by the emotion of the moment, she decides to try to invite Connor, a boy with whom she shares her passion for mathematics and who has become her romantic interest.

   
   

   

   

   

   
   

   Only things won't go well and through an accident, Connor ends up falling into the water in the middle of a disastrous request, causing Ruby to panic and go after him to save him. However, upon coming into contact with the sea, something happens and Ruby ends up awakening her Kraken powers, being able to save Connor but alarmed to realize that her powers do not seem to completely disappear upon returning to the surface. It is here that Ruby's problems change from being able to attend her prom to being able to control her nature as a Kraken and avoid being discovered by humans, not to mention that she will get into even worse trouble if her mother finds out.

   

   

   

   
   

   Click to read my opinion about the movie

   The truth is, before seeing the film, I had already been bombarded by images on the internet, although luckily, I didn't see any spoilers so I was on guard with reference to the plot, until that I had the opportunity to see it. I read that it did not have a good reception at the box office and although I do not consider it a bad film, I think that it is not strong enough to remain in our memories or awaken that desire to see it again and again until we are sick (I have films in my mental repertoire of this type, which I even know by heart from having seen them so much).

   I love animation and in this film, there is a lot of use of color, which is my weakness. As for the design and animation in general, I have mixed feelings, because although I really like Ruby's design in her normal version (I find it extremely adorable), when she adopts her giant Kraken form, I find it a bit absurd, even the point of making me "visual noise" throughout the entire movie, without reaching a point where I really got used to how it looked. The character of Connor, Ruby's platonic love, also seemed extremely bland and boring to me, but for the rest, I really liked the design of the rest of the characters, such as Ruby's human friends.

   Another thing I didn't like was the soundtrack. I feel that the best thing that can be done for a film is to create its own songs for the soundtrack, but if existing or popular songs are going to be chosen for reasons of cost, I think they should choose the most appropriate ones for the plot or that generate that impact effect. Maybe I didn't like it because I didn't recognize any of the songs and that didn't allow me to get hooked on those scenes where the music gave weight or emotion to the moment. I give as an example the movie Megamind, from the same animation studio, the songs chosen are not only iconic, but they are appropriate to the situation, which makes certain scenes of the movie unforgettable for the viewer. I also admit that I was quite disappointed with the plot. Although I wasn't expecting anything before watching it, the twist that the story took felt quite weak. I am a lover of clichés and well, if the twist of the mermaid being evil was a cliché, I think it was poorly implemented. We didn't get the chance to see an explanation of why the mermaids were evil, they just were and that's it; not to mention that no other mermaids were seen in the entire movie, leaving you with a huge empty space in what was supposedly a years-long battle between hundreds of sea creatures. I feel like if it had taken the cliché of "changing" minds and uniting both sides to end the feuds, it would have been much better than the original ending. I liked that the problem between Rudy's grandmother and his mother was resolved, to unite again as a family, but I feel that it would have been a perfect closure to also break that rivalry with their enemies, since the theme of constant war It was what started the problem. But anyway, in these times, it's always better to keep a villain, I guess. In short, it is a good film to spend an afternoon when you have nothing else to do, but as I mentioned, rescuing some of its designs, it is a quite forgettable film, in my opinion.

   En un mundo en donde las leyendas del mar relatan la existencia de sirenas y demás criaturas marinas, los humanos viven tranquilamente pensando que todo aquello se trata de eso: Solo mitos. Y la familia Gillman, que está compuesta por Krakens, hace lo posible por mantenerse bajo perfil, ocultando su verdadera naturaleza acuática, alejándose del mar y viviendo como el resto de los ciudadanos de "Oceanside". Ruby Gillman, la protagonista, es una adolescente con problemas típicos de su edad, como tratar de encajar en la secundaria, compartir con sus amigos o tratar de llamar la atención del chico que le gusta. Y a pesar de que obedece en todo a su madre Agatha, las cosas se complican cuando anuncian que el baile de graduación será efectuado en un barco en altamar.    A pesar de sus esfuerzos por convencerla, la madre de Ruby le insiste en que no es una buena idea arriesgarse a ir aquella fiesta, ya que dentro del mar habitan monstruos marinos que están dispuestos a hacerles daños a los krakens como ellos. Ruby, cansada de vivir una mentira y con el constante miedo de ser descubiertos, desea no sólo poder conocer el océano, sino también poder ser sincera con los que la rodean. Por lo que, sus ánimos terminan por desvanecerse cuando al enterarse que sus amigos, siempre dispuestos a faltar a todos los eventos (que al ser una ciudad costera, son relacionados con el mar), para estar de lado de la chica, tienen pensado asistir al baile, ya que se trata del baile de graduación e insisten a Rudy con que se arriesgue a ir también. Rudy acaba cediendo y llevada por la emoción del momento, decide tratar de invitar a Connor, un chico con el que comparte su pasión por las matemáticas y quién se ha vuelto su interés romántico.

   
   

   

   

   

   
   

   Sólo que las cosas no irán del todo bien y por medio de un accidente, Connor acaba cayendo al agua en medio de una desastrosa petición, haciendo que Ruby entre en pánico y vaya tras él para salvarlo. No obstante, al entrar en contacto con el mar, algo sucede y Ruby acaba por despertar sus poderes de Krakens, pudiendo salvar a Connor pero alarmada al darse cuenta de que sus poderes, parecen no desaparecer del todo al regresar a la superficie. Es aquí donde los problemas de Ruby cambian de poder asistir a sus baile de graduación a poder controlar su naturaleza como Kraken y evitar ser descubierta por los humanos, sin mencionar que se meterá en peores problemas si llega a enterarse su madre.

   
   

   

   

   

   
   

   Clickear para leer mi opinion sobre la pelicula

   La verdad, antes de ver el filme, ya había sido bombardeada por imágenes en internet, aunque por suerte, no vi nada de spoiler por lo que estuve a la expectativa con referencia a la trama, hasta que tuve la oportunidad de verla. Leí que no tuvo buena recepción en taquilla y aunque no la considero una mala película, pienso que no es lo suficientemente fuerte como para permanecer en nuestras memorias o despertar ese deseo de verla una y otra vez hasta el hartazgo (tengo en mi repertorio mental películas de éste tipo, que hasta me sé de memoria de tanto que las he visto).

   Adoro la animación y en ésta película, hay mucho uso de color, que es mi debilidad. En cuanto al diseño y de la animación en general, tengo sentimientos encontrados, pues aunque me gusta mucho el diseño de Ruby en su versión normal (me parece sumamente adorable), cuando adopta su forma de Kraken gigante, me parece un poco absurdo, hasta el punto de hacerme "ruido visual" durante toda la película, sin llegar a un punto en el que realmente me acostumbrase a cómo lucía. El personaje de Connor, el amor platónico de Ruby, también me pareció en extremo soso y aburrido, pero del resto, me agradaron mucho el diseño del resto de los personajes, como los amigos humanos de Ruby.

   Otra cosa que no me agradó fue la banda sonora. Siento que lo mejor que se puede hacer por un filme, es crear sus propias canciones para el soundtrack, pero si se van a escoger canciones ya existentes o populares por cuestiones de costo, creo que deberían escogerse las más apropiadas para la trama o que generen ese efecto de impacto. A lo mejor no me gustó porque no reconocí ninguna de las canciones y eso, no permitió que me enganchase en esas escenas en donde la música, le daba peso o emoción al momento. Pongo como ejemplo la película Megamente, del mismo estudio de animación, las canciones escogidas no sólo son icónicas, sino que van acorde a la situación, lo que hace de ciertas escenas de la película, sean inolvidables para el espectador. También admito que me decepcioné bastante con la trama, Aunque no estaba esperando nada antes de verla, el giro que dio la historia se sintió bastante flojo. Soy amante de los clichés y bien si el giro de la sirena siendo malvada, fue un cliché, pienso que fue mal implementado. No tuvimos la oportunidad de ver una explicación del porqué las sirenas eran malvadas, sólo lo eran y ya; sin mencionar que no se vio ninguna otra sirena en toda la película, lo cual te deja con un espacio vacío enorme en lo que supuestamente era una batalla de años entre cientos de criaturas del mar. Siento que si se hubiese tomado el cliché de "hacer cambiar" de opinión y unir ambos bandos para acabar con las enemistades, hubiera estado mucho mejor que el final original. Me gustó que se resolviese el problema existente entre la abuela de Rudy y su madre, para volverse a unir como familia, pero siento que hubiera sido un cierre perfecto lograr romper también con esa rivalidad con sus enemigos, ya que el tema de la guerra constante fue lo que inició con el problema. Pero en fin, en los tiempos actuales, siempre es mejor conservar a un villano, supongo. En fin, es una buena película para pasar una tarde que no tengas más nada qué hacer, pero como mencioné, rescatando algunos de sus diseños, es un filme bastante olvidable, en mi opinión.

   Welcome my dear kraken-loving internet travelers and thank you very much for making a temporary stop on my post, since there was a bit of a stir about the animated film "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" for seeming like a direct mockery of Disney (I don't know if It was like that or not, but I still found it funny jajaja) Added to the above is the fact that it comes from one of my favorite animation studios, so watching it was almost mandatory. Without further ado, stretch out the tentacles a bit as we are about to begin.

   Bienvenidos mis queridos viajeros del internet amantes de los krakens y muchas gracias por haber hecho una parada temporal en mi post, desde que hubo un pequeño revuelo sobre el filme animado "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" por parecer una burla directa hacia Disney (Desconozco si fue así o no pero igual me resultó gracioso jajaja) sumado a lo anterior está el hecho de que procede de uno de mis estudios de animación favoritos por lo que el verla resultaba casi algo obligatorio.    The animation is simply beautiful and has good fluidity, however, what stands out the most is its color palette, it is highly vibrant and striking by opting for fluorescent colors that manage to highlight what has some kind of magic and so on, this highlight is extremely nice to look at; the rest of the characters and scenery enjoy less flashy colors but are still pleasant to see.

   La animación es sencillamente hermosa y tiene una buena fluidez, sin embargo lo que más destaca es su paleta de colores que es altamente vibrante y llamativa al optar por colores fluorescente que logran hacer destacar aquello que tenga algún tipo de magia y demás, este resalte es sumamente agradable a la vista; el resto de personajes y escenografías gozan de unos colores menos llamativos pero igual son gratos de ver.

   The world building seeks to be absurd, strange and funny, although at various points it manages to do this in a good way, there are some moments where it exaggerates and feels too stupid and forced. Another problem with this section is that there is no correct use of the context, the above is due to the fact that it leaves many interesting points untouched such as: The city of the Krakens, which is only given a few brief glances and could have given a lot game, as well as a more remarkable interaction between said society and that of humans, since both elements would have further enriched the world and provided it with an interesting characterization.

   La construcción de mundo busca ser absurda, extraña y graciosa, si bien en varios puntos logra hacer esto de buena forma existen algunos momentos en dónde exagera y se siente demasiado estúpida y forzada. Otro problema con este apartado es que no existe un correcto uso del contexto, lo anterior se debe a que deja muchos puntos interesantes sin tocar tales como: La ciudad de los Krakens a la que apenas se le da unos breves vistazos y podría haber dado mucho juego, así como una interacción más destacable entre dicha sociedad y la de los humanos, siendo que ambos elementos habrían enriquecido más el mundo y lo hubiese dotado de una caracterización interesante.

The main problem here is that its narrative feels careless and hasty, making the different events pass at a very fast pace, thus preventing a correct development, this is because it tries to include many elements that it fails to take advantage of for the short time of duration that it has, in this section less would have been more.

   Con la trama sucede algo similar a lo previamente expuesto, si bien tiene momentos de comedia muy buenos estos no son tan abundantes como para poder rescatar al filme debido a que la fantasía no cuenta con un desarrollo que se sienta destacable siendo esto un gran problema al ser un punto importante del filme. El principal problema aquí es que su narrativa se siente descuidada y apresurada haciendo que los diferentes sucesos transcurran a un ritmo muy veloz impidiendo así un correcto desenvolvimiento, esto se debe a que intenta incluir muchos elementos a los cuales no logra sacarles provecho por el corto tiempo de duración que tiene, en este apartado menos hubiese sido más.

   This is without a doubt the worst section of the film, all the characters feel very forgettable, the most notable being their showy and strange aspects, very few have at least one interesting characterization, this lack of personality means that in their Most of the characters sit like an empty shell that's only around to make up. The conflict that Ruby has is interesting but it does not have a good development and is relegated to just being wasted potential, the same happens with the mother's past of which only a quick and anticlimactic explanation is given. The villainess is cliché and bland to sickness.

   Este es sin lugar a dudas el peor apartado de la cinta, todos los personajes se sienten muy olvidables siendo lo más destacable sus aspectos vistosos y extraños, son muy pocos los que tienen al menos una caracterización interesante, está falta de personalidad hace que en su mayoría los personajes se sientan como un cascarón vacío que solo se encuentran presentes para hacer bulto. El conflicto que tienen Ruby es interesante pero este no tiene un buen desarrollo y queda relegado a solo ser potencial desperdiciado, lo mismo pasa con el pasado de la madre del cual solo se da una explicación rápida y anticlimática.    Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is not a bad concept but if it is poorly executed, it tries to cover a lot of things without being able to develop them in a good way so you end up unfinished, its comedy is nice however it does not have a remarkable approach to just focus in this. This is why it deserves 2 stars out of 7, although it has one or two positive points, these are not good enough to let go of the large number of wasted elements.

   Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken no es un mal concepto pero si tiene una mala ejecución, intenta abarcar muchas cosas sin poder desarrollarlas de buena forma por lo que estás terminan inconclusas, su comedia es agradable sin embargo esta tampoco posee un enfoque destacable como para solo enfocarse en esto. Es por esto que merece 2 estrellas de 7, si bien tiene uno que otro punto positivo estos no son lo suficientemente buenos como para dejar pasar la gran cantidad de elementos desaprovechados.
