Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing great, my fellow fans of good stories. On this occasion, I want to talk about a superhero series that I watched some time ago. This series was made by Hulu, and I remember that years ago, when it came out, it entertained me quite a bit. Today, I'm going to talk a little about Marvel's Runaways. There are very diverse opinions about this series; for some, it was their favorite Marvel show—unique, different, and stylish. For others, it was one of the worst, categorized as one of Marvel's worst television offerings. So, I went in with rock-bottom expectations, not knowing what to think, and in the end, I perfectly understood why people go to such extremes with this show. To begin with, the main idea, the premise, is pure gold.

I mean, just think about it: you're a teenager, and you think your biggest problems are high school, relationship drama, and nobody understanding you. Suddenly, bam! One night you discover that your parents aren't at some super boring charity club, but are part of a secret supervillain cult that performs human sacrifices. What do you do? Well, you grab your friends—who are also the villains' children—and you run away! That concept alone is a 10/10. It's a super fresh, distressing, and risky way to look at the superhero genre, but it feels very real, very grounded, and it's incredibly easy to connect with the central conflict. Who hasn't felt at some point that their parents are the villains of their own movie?

Well, this series makes it literal. Now, this is where things get... complicated. This is the point that will decide whether you love or hate the series: the parents. In the original comics, the parents are Bad with a capital B; they are the villains, and that's it. You don't need to know more about them; they are there for the kids to rebel against. The series, however, makes the HUGE and very deliberate decision to turn all that on its head. It spends almost as much time with the parents as with the kids. It delves deep into their motivations, their fears, their super twisted justifications, and even the love, in their own way, that they have for each other and for their children.

Hola a todos, espero que estén super bien, amigos fanáticos de las buenas historias, en esta ocasión, les quiero hablar de una serie de superhéroes, que ví ya hace algún tiempo, está serie fue hecha por Hulu, y recuerdo que hace años, en su momento, me entretuvo bastante.. hoy les hablaré un poco de Marvel’s Runaways. Hay opiniones muy diversas de esta serie, para algunos fue su serie favorita de Marvel, única, diferente y con estilo.. para otros, fue de lo peor, la categorizaron como de las peores cosas de Marvel en televisión.. así que entré con las expectativas por el suelo, no sabía ni qué pensar, y bueno, al final, entendí perfectamente por qué la gente se va a los extremos con esta serie.. para empezar, la idea principal, la premisa, es oro puro.
O sea, pónganse a pensar: eres un adolescente, y crees que tus peores problemas son la prepa, los dramas amorosos y que nadie te entiende.. de repente, ¡zas!, una noche descubres que tus papás no están en un club de beneficencia súper aburrido, sino que son parte de un culto secreto de supervillanos que hace sacrificios humanos.. qué haces? Pues agarras a tus amigos —que también son hijos de los villanos— y te escapas! Solo ese concepto ya es un 10/10, es una forma súper fresca, angustiante y arriesgada de ver el género de superhéroes, pero se siente muy real, muy aterrizada, y es facilísimo conectar con el conflicto central. ¿Quién no ha sentido alguna vez que sus papás son los villanos de su propia película?
Pues esta serie lo vuelve literal, ahora.. aquí es donde la cosa se pone... complicada.. este es el punto que va a decidir si amas u odias la serie: los papás. En los cómics originales, los papás son Malos con M mayúscula, son los villanos y se acabó.. no necesitas saber más de ellos; están ahí para que los chicos tengan contra quién rebelarse. La serie, en cambio, toma la decisión GIGANTE y súper a propósito de darle la vuelta a todo eso.. pasa casi el mismo tiempo con los papás que con los hijos.. se mete a fondo en sus motivaciones, sus miedos, sus justificaciones súper retorcidas e incluso en el amor, muy a su manera, que se tienen entre ellos y por sus hijos.

And let me tell you, I was... ugh, in a total dilemma about this. The comic book fan in me was screaming, "No! They're supposed to be the bad guys! Stop making me feel sorry for them!" But the other part of me was completely hooked. Seeing the parents' side added a fascinating layer of moral complexity. With a character like Tina Minoru, my emotions were all over the place from one scene to the next. When she was with her daughter Nico, I couldn't stand her. But then you'd see her in a scene alone with her husband, and you'd catch that little piece of vulnerability and think, "Okay, I see the person underneath." The actors who play the parents are, for the most part, spectacular.

The Yorkes are the typical weird, kinda hippie couple that you find super likable, but at the same time... dude, they're part of a murderous cult! The Wilders have that incredible power-couple vibe. It's a decision that, yes, takes away some of the black-and-white nature of the comic, but damn, it makes it a super interesting series to watch. I completely understand the purists who say this ruins everything, that the series gets stuck in the adults' drama when it should be about the kids. And they're not wrong. There are entire episodes where the kids feel like secondary characters in their own show, just reacting to what their parents do. But I have to confess... I was completely hooked on the parents' drama.

But anyway, speaking of the kids, let's move on to the real Runaways. The casting here, for the most part, is brilliant. Lyrica Okano IS Nico Minoru... in all caps. She has the whole goth vibe, that pent-up fury, the pain, and that budding leadership—she nails it all perfectly. I couldn't take my eyes off her. And the actress who plays Gertrude Yorkes? Ugh, brutal! She and Lyrica, for me, were the ones who shone the brightest, like they truly understood the essence of their characters better than anyone.

Y déjenme decirles, con esto yo estaba… uff, en un dilema total.. el fan del cómic que vive en mí estaba que gritaba: «¡No! ¡Se supone que ellos son los malos! ¡Deja de hacer que me den lástima!».. pero la otra parte de mí estaba enganchadísima, es que ver el lado de los papás le metía una capa de complejidad moral que estaba fascinante, con un personaje como Tina Minoru, mis emociones iban y venían, de una escena a otra. Cuando estaba con su hija Nico, no la soportaba.. pero luego la veías en una escena solita con su esposo, y le veías ese pedacito de vulnerabilidad y decías: «Ok, ya vi a la persona que hay debajo».. es que los actores que hacen de los papás son, la mayoría, espectaculares.
Los Yorkes son la típica pareja rara, medio hippie, que te cae súper bien pero al mismo tiempo... ¡wey, son parte de un culto asesino! Los Wilders tienen esa vibra de pareja poderosa, increíble, es una decisión que, sí, le quita un poco lo blanco y negro al cómic, pero ¡carajo!, la convierte en una serie súper interesante de ver.. entiendo perfecto a los puristas que dicen que esto arruina todo, que la serie se queda estancada en el drama de los adultos cuando debería ser sobre los chicos.. y no están equivocados. Hay capítulos enteros donde los chicos se sienten como personajes secundarios en su propia serie, nomás reaccionando a lo que hacen sus papás, pero les tengo que confesar… a mí el chisme de los papás me tenía atrapadísimo.
Pero bueno, hablando de los chicos, pasemos a los verdaderos Runaways. El casting aquí, en su mayoría, es una genialidad, Lyrica Okano ES Nico Minoru.. así, con mayúsculas, tiene toda la onda gótica, esa furia guardada, el dolor y ese liderazgo que le va naciendo, todo lo clava a la perfección.. no podía dejar de verla. ¿Y la actriz de Gertrude Yorkes? ¡Uf, brutal! Ella y Lyrica fueron para mí las que más brillaron, como que de verdad entendieron la esencia de sus personajes mejor que nadie.

But well, now we get to the changes... and here, this is where my geeky side, the comic book fan, started to get an eye twitch. Let's talk about Molly. In the comics, Molly Hayes is an adorable and super-strong 11-year-old mutant. In the series, she's Molly Hernandez, she's a bit older, and they changed her entire story. Mind you, the actress does a good job with what she was given, but let's be honest... they created a completely new character and slapped a familiar name on her, probably to avoid the "mutant" rights issue Marvel had at the time. It didn't make me angry, but it was the first red flag that told me: "Watch out, this is a very 'inspired by' adaptation, not a faithful one."

My biggest problem, for me, was the changes to the boys. In the comics, Alex Wilder is the nerd, the super-intelligent strategist, but also kind of cold and manipulative. Chase Stein is the dumb jock with a heart of gold, not very bright but street-smart. Well, in the series, they flip it around. They make Chase a secret engineering genius, a super-intelligent athlete. This, right off the bat, steps on Alex's toes. If Chase is the smart one who builds all the gadgets, then what's Alex's purpose? He gets kind of sidelined, and for a large part of the series, you're left wondering what the hell he's even doing there, beyond moving the plot forward. I felt it was a change that weakened the group instead of making it stronger. And then there are those other creative decisions that make you think, 'Did they really think this was a good idea?'.

And for me, the worst of all was Nico's Staff of One. In the comic, it's pure magic; she has to draw blood to summon it and can cast ANY spell you can think of, but only once. That 'but' is what makes her powers so cool and creative. In the series... it's technology. Although they later give us hints of something more, I feel they didn't know how to handle it well. Many things feel unearned; there's no believable progression from science fiction to magic, or to fantasy, to aliens. It's interesting, yes, but the plot loses its direction, like it's having an identity crisis.

Pero bueno, ahora sí llegamos a los cambios... y aquí, aquí es donde a mi lado friki, al fan de los cómics, le empezó a dar como un tic en el ojo.. hablemos de Molly, en los cómics, Molly Hayes es una mutante de 11 años, adorable y súper fuerte.. en la serie, es Molly Hernandez, es un poco más grande y le cambiaron toda la historia.. ojo, la actriz hace un buen trabajo con lo que le dieron, pero, seamos sinceros.. crearon un personaje completamente nuevo y le pegaron un nombre que ya conocíamos, seguro para no meterse en la bronca de los derechos de los "mutantes" que Marvel tenía en ese entonces, no me hizo enojar, pero sí fue la primera banderita roja que me dijo: "Ojo, que esto es una adaptación muy 'inspirada en', no una fiel".
Mi problema más grande, para mí, fueron los cambios en los chicos. En los cómics, Alex Wilder es el nerd, el estratega súper inteligente, pero también medio frío y manipulador, Chase Stein es el deportista tontorrón con un corazón de oro, no muy listo pero con mucha calle.. pues en la serie le dan la vuelta, hacen que Chase sea un genio de la ingeniería en secreto, un deportista súper inteligente.. esto, de entrada, ya le pisa los talones a Alex. Si Chase es el listo que arma todos los aparatos, ¿entonces para qué sirve Alex? Lo dejan medio de lado y durante gran parte de la serie te la pasas preguntándote qué demonios hace él ahí, más allá de ser el que mueve la trama, sentí que fue un cambio que debilitó al grupo en lugar de hacerlo más fuerte. Y luego están esas otras decisiones creativas que te hacen pensar: 'De verdad les pareció buena idea?'.
Y para mí, la peor de todas fue el Báculo del Auténtico, de Nico.. en el cómic, es magia pura, tene que sacarse sangre para invocarlo y puede lanzar CUALQUIER hechizo que se te ocurra, pero solo una vez. Ese 'pero' es lo que hace sus poderes tan geniales y creativos.. en la serie... es tecnología.. aunque después nos dan pruebas de algo mas.. pero siento que no lo supieron manejar bien, hay muchas cosas que se sienten gratuitas, no hay un avance creíble de la ciencia ficción a la magia, o a la fantasía, a los aliens.. es interesante si, pero el rumbo de la trama se pierde mucho, como una crisis de identidad.

And the team name! In the comic, they never formally call themselves "The Runaways." It's an offhand comment someone makes, and that's it. It fits perfectly with that vibe of them being a found family, not a superhero team. But in the series, Alex literally suggests it as a cool nickname, referencing other kids who were sacrificed. It felt super forced, very on-the-nose. But despite all these complaints, I couldn't stop watching. Why? Because for all its flaws, the series has some weird and wonderful things that save it. To start, can we take a second to talk about the pet? It's not a dog, not a cat... it's a genetically engineered Deinonychus named Old Lace. Yes, people, they have a DINOSAUR as a pet! And it's incredible. Every time Old Lace was on screen, I had a goofy grin on my face. The series also handles the mystery very well. There's a giant, glowing hole that the parents are digging in the middle of Los Angeles, and you spend the entire first season trying to figure out what the hell is down there.

The fact that an episode was released weekly, as it used to be on Hulu, helped a ton. It gave you time to build your theories and left you desperate to see the next one. So, what's my verdict on Marvel's Runaways? It's a super imperfect and, at times, very frustrating series that makes some bizarre changes to a comic many of us love. It has a sort of identity crisis, not knowing whether to be a teen drama or a story about their villainous parents. But at the same time, it's saved by incredible performances, a main idea that is brutal, and a super weird charm you can't deny. It's not the masterpiece I was hoping for, but it's nowhere near the garbage I feared it would be.

It's a fascinating, chaotic, and, in the end, enjoyable journey. If you're a comic book purist, you'll probably hate it. But if you can watch it as something separate, as a reinvention of the story, I think there's a lot you might like. It kept me on the edge of my seat, made me care about the characters (even the ones I was supposed to hate), and left me wanting more. My final verdict? I give it a solid 7.5/10. It's a good series, not great, but it's one of the most interesting and ambitious things Marvel has tried on TV. Give it a chance, but go in with an open mind. Y el nombre del equipo! En el cómic, nunca se llaman formalmente "The Runaways".. es un comentario al aire que alguien hace y ya.. queda perfecto con esa onda de que son una familia que se encontró, no un equipo de superhéroes, pero en la serie, Alex literal lo sugiere como un apodo cool, haciendo referencia a otros chicos que sacrificaron.. se sintió súper forzado, muy obvio, pero a pesar de todas estas quejas, no la podía soltar. ¿Por qué? Porque con todo y sus fallas, la serie tiene unas cosas rarísimas y geniales que la salvan.. para empezar, ¿podemos tomarnos un segundo para hablar de la mascota? No es un perro, no es un gato.. es un Deinonychus modificado genéticamente que se llama Old Lace. ¡Sí, gente, tienen un DINOSAURIO de mascota! Y es increíble. Cada vez que salía Old Lace en pantalla, yo tenía una sonrisa de tonto.. la serie también maneja súper bien el misterio, hay un hoyo gigante y brillante que los papás están cavando en medio de Los Ángeles, y te pasas toda la primera temporada tratando de adivinar qué demonios hay ahí abajo..
El hecho de que saliera un capítulo por semana, como era antes en Hulu, le ayudó un montón. Te daba tiempo para armar tus teorías y te dejaba con unas ganas brutales de ver el siguiente. Entonces, ¿cuál es mi veredicto de Marvel’s Runaways? Es una serie súper imperfecta y que a ratos frustra un montón, que le hace unos cambios rarísimos a un cómic que muchos amamos.. tiene como una crisis de identidad, no sabe si ser un drama de adolescentes o una historia sobre sus papás villanos, pero al mismo tiempo, la salvan unas actuaciones increíbles, una idea principal que es brutal y un encanto súper raro que no le puedes negar.. no es la obra maestra que yo esperaba, pero ni de cerca es la basura que me temía que fuera.
Es un viaje fascinante, caótico y, al final, uno que se disfruta.. si eres súper purista del cómic, probablemente la vas a odiar. Pero si puedes verla como algo aparte, como una reinvención de la historia, creo que hay mucho que te puede gustar.. a mí me tuvo al borde del asiento, hizo que me preocupara por los personajes (hasta por los que se supone que debía odiar) y me dejó queriendo más.. mi veredicto final? Le doy un buen 7.5/10. Es una serie buena, no genial, pero es de las cosas más interesantes y ambiciosas que Marvel ha intentado en la tele.. denle una oportunidad, pero vayan con la mente abierta, cuéntenme qué les pareció, y bueno.. hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
