I'm always curious how comic book TV Show adaptations will turn out to be. Marvel's Runaways is another one in line of great comic books turned into a TV Show. The idea of this show is very much different from standard super hero formula. The story is revolving around a group of teenagers with super powers who grouped together to fight, believe it or not, their villain parents. Their parents are a part of an organization called Pride, the goal of Pride is to revive ancient beings by sacrificing innocent lives. Once their kids found out about what their parents are doing they decided to rebel and try to stop them. The kids have all sorts of powers ranging from telepathic link with a pet raptor, high tech gauntlets capable of spitting fire, high tech magic, increased strength and aliens. Yes aliens.

Comic book is over the top even for super hero standards and the characters from the Runaways will become a part of a large Marvel universe. Even though the comic book is very interesting, the TV show is mostly following the story with some exceptions. Acting is a mixed bag of goodies in this one, some actors are pretty good, while others not so much. CGI is decent even though there is not too much of it, got to follow those budget guidelines. Overall the Runaways is a short ten episode superhero flick with some interesting new characters. If you compare this show with the Inhumans, another marvel TV show adaptation, I'd say this one is way better, but it is far from the great television we can see these days. Sill worth the watch if you like this kind of superhero shows. 8.3/10

  2. Runaways Episode 6: 'Metamorphosis' Review@petermarie3115d

    Revealing Truths...

(Late Review: This episode aired on 12th December, last Tuesday)

    unnamed (12).jpg

Now convinced of their parents' guilt, the group of teenagers decide to expose them using footage from the camera they found in Alex's hidden library. Since the footage has been funnelled to the secure servers of Nico's family's company, Alex devises a plan to sneak into their server room during the Pride gala holding that night.

Meanwhile, a lot of complicated personal drama is brewing among the characters. Nico and Chase are getting even closer to their parents whom they must soon betray. Frank, Karoline's father, has given up on going 'ultra' in the Church of Gib, choosing to focus on his own pursuits and be himself instead, while Victor Stein is devastated over learning of his wife's affair with Robert Minoru. Jonah, newly reborn from the Pride's sacrifices, also prepares to attend the gala against Leslie's wishes to meet Karoline as her true father, and being the 'benefactor' who formed the pride and helped its members achieve their various successes, no one has a say in it. The teens are still nursing their various crushes, and this episode, Karoline reveals she's attracted to Nico, making what was previously a love triangle and a separate, certified couple into an extremely dramatic love 'pentagon': Gert has a thing for Chase, who has a thing for Karoline, who has a thing for Nico, who is in a relationship with Alex. Like, waoh!

    unnamed (14).jpg

The Pride gala and the teens' plans are almost ruined when the individual dramas come into light. Karoline drinks herself to drunkenness and falls off the roof of the skyscraper, only to discover she can fly. Victor announces about his wife's and Robert's affair publicly, sending Tina to her office in tears, which Nico and Alex have just broken into. Frank meets Jonah and, unexpectedly, begins to recover a memory of the man and Leslie sleeping together --a memory that was taken out of him.

In the end though, Alex and Nico, with the help of a surprisingly flirtatious Gert succeed in getting the video files. Victor is treated by Jonah and emerges quite different. And Molly, desperately seeking info on her parents, lets it slip to the ever perceptive lawyer Catherine Wilder that she did see the Pride sacrifice ceremony, putting herself and the other teens in severe danger.

  3. Runaways Episode 5: 'Kingdom' Review@petermarie3124d

    The Runaways Assemble!

Finally, the kids use their abilities together, and boy, did they kick ass!

    images (73).jpg

Following the end of last episode with the abduction of Alex, this episode quickly reveals the identity of his kidnappers –his father’s old pal, Darius and his crew. Darius tells Alex about his father's criminal past and how he reneged on a deal between them, and using Alex's phone, informs Geoffery that his son will be killed if he doesn'tpay up in full. Furious, Geoffrey calls together a crew of his own and sets out to meet them. A shootout ensues. Alex, using his gun, shoots Andre, a kid like him to save his dad, but ends up being reabducted by Darius.

Meanwhile, Nico, Karoline, Gert and Molly are frantic. They don't know who has taken Alex but, now fully sure of their parent's guilt, suspect their involvement. Nico uses her mother's staff and divines the way the car that too Alex went and they hastily follow in Karoline's car. When they arrive, Darius is driving off again with Alex. They follow at a short distance until the car stops at a red light, then disembark to rescue him. Nico tries her staff again but can't get it to work before the light turns green, so Molly rushes forward and lifts the SUV off its rear tires so it can't move, forcing Darius and his crew to come out with Alex. He attempts to shoot at her but Karoline, absndoning all restraint, takes off her bracelet and dazzles him with her lights. And then Chase joins them with his finished fistigons and blasts the crew away.

The kids are estatic to find out about the other's abilities and at using them to save the day, and together, they try to save the boy Alex shot from the Pride. However, the Pride doesn't use the hidden library in Alex's house but the private room in the Church of Gibborim, and this time, the sacrifice is successful, raising the mysterious man lying on the bed to full strength and making him completely fleshed.

On the emotional side, the show is proving even more complicated than initially expected.

At the end of the episode, both Nico and Chase get close to their parents. Chase and his dad, Victor actually work together to perfect his fistigons and Nico's mother, the cold Tina, gives the magic staff willingly to Nico for her to become more acquainted with what it can do. Then Victor's just completed device for viewing the future shows the collapsing of the entire city of Los Angeles into the ocean, and the mysterious man askd to meet someone, who we assume to be Karoline...

What do these mean? Will the Pride be responsible for the sinking of Los Angeles, and do they know this is where their actions will lead? Runaway continues on Tuesday, only on Hulu

  4. Runaways –Episode 4: ‘Fifteen’ Review@petermarie3133d

And this show just keeps getting more and more exciting!

    images (91).jpg

In ‘Fifteen’, the kids continue on their mission of finding out if their parents are guilty of murder or not. Niko and Chase believe that they actually did kill the girl Destiny, and the appearance of her body on the beach only strengthens that belief. Niko, in fact, goes one further and asserts that the Pride not only killed Destiny, but also her sister Amy all those years ago, and decides to take it all to the police. Alex, who doesn’t know what to believe, tries to dissuade her but her mind is made up. Gert and Karoline, on the other hand, cannot believe their parents could do such a thing as murder, and Karoline, accompanied by Gert, is determined to prove this beyond doubt. In the meantime, Chase advises everyone to find ways to protect themselves –he is already working on a glove-type weapon, and Alex, snooping around his father’s study for more clues, finds and pockets a loaded gun.

    unnamed (23).jpg

The six are still far from being a team though –everyone is still keeping his/her secrets close to heart. Niko and Alex make no mention of her mother’s magic staff, Karoline says nothing about the weird lights she emitted, and Gert shushes Chase when he tries to talk about the dinosaur in her basement. Molly, who unlike the rest, wants to tell everything about her super-strength unfortunately cannot get them to listen to her.

Meanwhile, the members of the Pride themselves, the parents, are going through difficulties of their own. The discovery of Destiny’s body means they need another sacrifice at once, but Victor, Chase’s dad is having psychological issues and when he goes out to get a homeless person along with Niko’s dad Robert, they are apprehended by the cops. Gert’s parents, tired of the pride and genuinely scared, try to leave with the kids to somewhere hidden, only for Tina, Niko’s cold-hearted mother to show up and inform them she knows everything about their plan. And Karoline’s mom is worried sick about her secret ward, who presumably, the sacrifices are being made for.

    unnamed (22).jpg

At the end of the episode, though, everything is different. Alex and Niko discover the Pride have the cops in their pockets and escape from the precinct just in time. Karoline and Gert find a file in her mother’s laptop which they send to Alex for decrypting, and find out that their parents have a list of several homeless persons –Runaways –from the Church of Gibborim, and that Karoline’s mother is in charge of selecting who is used for their secret ceremony. Karoline trusts Chase with her secret and takes off her bracelet in his presence, triggering the lights, and Gert confirms the Velociraptor does listen to her just as the entire family comes in on that part of the secret. And then Alex is kidnapped by unknown persons right in front of Niko and after they cracked the list.
