    Hey Steem Movie Fans

    I love a good war movie as much as the next dude. Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Hacksaw Ridge, Fury, Inglorious Bastards and the list goes on. There have been countless war movies made over the years drawing inspiration from numerous wars in history. However, I feel the Iraq war has probably been one of the most milked concepts for a war movie EVER.

    Just to name a few, don't let me even get started on the less memorable ones. I think it's safe to say this concept has been beaten to death and can really be put to bed now. Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn't think so and patriotic Americans will support these movies until the troops come home and long after.

    Needless to say, I didn't really have high hopes going into this movie but wanted to see how Netflix would execute on the concept.

    The plot for Sand Castle

    The movie is centred around inexperienced American private discovers the true cost of war when his unit is sent on a dangerous mission to repair a water pumping station in a rural Iraqi village. Our main character Matt Ocre is a young man caught up in something much bigger than he signed up for.

    He joins the army to pay for his studies and hoped to remain inactive during his time before he is recruited to a goodwill mission to restore water supply to a local village.

    Its a different take on a war movie and I think this unwelcomed goodwill mission can be extrapolated to the whole war, and this particular mission is a microcosm of the whole Iraq war. It leaves soldiers wounded physically and psychologically, especially when soldiers think they are doing good and getting punished for it.

    Sand Castle is not a high adrenaline, fast paced, action filled war movies in fact the story moves at a rather slow pace for a war film but has a definite message to deliver and does so with finesse and realism.

    The acting is very strong from each of the characters and the Direction does not overdo the story by muddling it with unnecessary and gratuitous violence. Of course t,here is a degree of "war time" conflicts and shows its affects on the soldiers who live with it during their tour.

    To add to the credibility of the film, the writer (an actual veteran of the 2003 Invasion of Iraq) simply conveys his experience while serving there. I liked this approach to the Genra as it tells a story of a simple objective which becomes difficult due to the nature of war itself and the unfortunate casualties that suffer because of it.

    It also shows the human cost to both sides, the U.S. Troops as well as the people caught up in the terrible circumstances of war. I felt it illustrates that perspective quite well.

    The movie lets you feel the consequences of war on both sides as those on the ground suffer for the choices made by previous decisions made to disable the enemy. It really does show how senseless war can be and how good intentions aren't rewarded in a time of war.

    My rating

    I thought it was a serviceable war movie, It had good pacing, ok character development, pretty standard plot, decent acting but a lacklustre payoff. If you're looking for a war movie that has a bit more substance than just shooting insurgents for 2 hours, then you may want to give this one a shot.

    I give it a 6 gun salute out of 10

    Este fin de semana se prepara emocionante, celebramos el séptimo cumpleaños de mi primogénita y hemos estado preparando dos días de celebración uno familiar y el otro con sus amigüitos de la escuela. Como no podría ser de otro modo, hemos repartido las tareas entre los dos progenitores ya que la vida moderna nos impide disponer del suficiente tiempo para preparar uno solo semejante acontecimiento, así pues, mi mujer se está encargando de los víveres, la vestimenta y la ornamentación y yo me encargo de los dispositivos audiovisuales, la logística y la seguridad del evento… A estas alturas ya os estaréis preguntando a qué coño viene todo esto!!!??? Pues que como proceso de los preparativos de la seguridad del evento he querido ver una película de la que poder extraer y refrescar nociones básicas de protección de unas zonas determinadas en un contexto de “guerrilla urbana”.

    Ahora alguno estará pensando… Alaaaaa que exagerado!!! y yo le digo… Tú no has estado en muchos cumpleaños infantiles VERDAD!!!?? Pues eso, un evento de estos hay que tomárselo como lo que es, una batalla sin cuartel por la toma de posiciones que den acceso rápido a la nevera de los refrescos y las cervezas para los adultos!!

    Así pues, ya llevo varias semanas preparando la estrategia. Primero piratee la Vlan del Ministerio de Defensa y falsifique una orden de vuelo de un Awac para que sobrevolara la zona donde se celebrará el evento y tomase unas imágenes del mismo… tras conseguirlo, alguien me dijo que eso lo podía hacer desde Google Maps sin poner en peligro la operación… por supuesto lo sacrifique, sabía demasiado y nunca me había caído muy bien. Una vez obtenidas las imágenes, procedí a estudiar detenidamente el emplazamiento de mis unidades disponibles…

    Obstáculos en calles, francotiradores, minas anti-persona, un par de drones y un carro blindado, un M1 Abrams que me toco en la tómbola de las ferias el San Lorenzo pasado… Creo que tengo cubiertas todas las vías de acceso a la Zona A y Zona B que es donde se desarrollaran los acontecimientos. Por razones obvias de seguridad no voy a desvelar los planes de huida en caso de que las fuerzas atacantes traspasen el perímetro de seguridad planeado.

    Con todos estos datos frescos en mi mente me dispuse a buscar una película de tiros que me metiese ya en situación. Primero pensé en algún clásico, hay películas de guerra muy buenas en la historia del cine, cualquiera de esas que estáis pensando me habría valido, pero decidí ver una nueva de Netflix.

    No se porque, pero a Netflix le presupongo una calidad de base suficiente como para fiarme de que al ver su logo de marca en alguna producción, esta va a ser algo más que decente, incluso diría que creo que por el mero hecho de que salga el logo Netflix “el producto” va a ser muy bueno… bien, pues tengo que resetear mi prejuicio y comenzar a tomarme Netflix como una plataforma donde hay cosas buenas, regulares, malas y pésimas, como en casi todos lados, la peli que hoy nos ocupa está entre mala y pésima, no me defino más porque a mitad me fui a la cama llorando por haber tirado la noche con eso en lugar de con un clásico que habría disfrutado muchísimo más, la vida es asín!!! a veces acertamos y a veces fallamos pero hay que seguir adelante!! No me voy ni a molestar en explicar demasiado, Castillo de Arena es una película de soldados americanos en Irak y ni el guión ni los actores ni… nada, no hay por donde cogerla. Insisto en que fui incapaz de terminar de verla e igual de repente la película da un giro brutal y es la mejor de la historia, pero me extrañaría muchísimo.

    Así pues, tras todos los preparativos de esta semana previa, al final me fallo la parte de documentación audiovisual… igual después de comer me pongo Black Hawk Derribado y así me motivo a tope… si no, si fracaso la misión, le pediré responsabilidades a Netflix xD Si no sobrevivo a los niños, ha sido un placer conoceros y Steem On!!!

    Advertencia: Es obvio, pero dado que en España se están poniendo un poco “especiales” con las Operaciones Araña para detener internautas, me veo en la obligación de advertir a los agentes de la ley de que no he pirateado la vlan del ministerio de defensa ni he colocado minas, francotiradores, tanques ni nada de eso por las calles de Huesca, es todo una licencia creativa que he utilizado para esta crítica, gracias y que pasen buen fin de semana, si quieren pasarse por el cumpleaños, tráiganse su propia cerveza, si no, haremos corto!!!
