Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island

Although I am not the biggest fan of Scooby Doo, I started to reflect for a while and discovered that throughout my life I have dedicated an unexpected amount of hours to the franchise, not only because I had the opportunity to see the fantastic films in Live action directed by James Gunn, but because it was also my morning tradition for a long time to watch a couple of episodes on the cartoon network before going to school.

As someone who was always frightened but at the same time has a fascination with horror Scooby Doo was perfect, mixing fascinating monsters with good moments of comedy, interesting plots and a group of iconic characters that transcend any series or film that tries to adapt them.

For me, part of the attraction was that at the end of each episode it was made clear to the viewer that the paranormal elements of each episode were manufactured by the villain on duty, who generally used a game of smoke, lights and illusions to deceive the mystery gang.

I mention this whole thing not only because it gave me a little calm after all the scares, but because the 99% of media related to the creation of Joe Ruby and Ken Spears uses this as a characteristic feature.

For this same reason, I am sure that many of you will have heard at some point in your lives about the existence of Scooby Doo on Zombie Island, a 1998 animated film that breaks with this tradition, creating one of the most fascinating pieces along the way. of the entire franchise in one of the most unexpected places.

However, this does not mean that the way in which Scooby Doo on Zombie Island addresses the paranormal is its only attraction; on the contrary, we are facing a production that takes full advantage of the audiovisual possibilities of its own medium, giving us an animation aesthetically beautiful that respects the myth of its characters, allowing them to evolve organically.

Do you remember "Velma"? The animated series for adults that premiered a few months ago on HBO Max? Although it was easy to be offended by the off-color jokes as well as the intermittent use of vulgarities, his greatest sin was actually the lack of respect he had for the public and their knowledge of the mystery gang, turning each member into a unnecessary deconstruction of a trope that used to work perfectly.

Zombie Island has a mainly childish approach, and for this reason it is unfortunate that it is able to squeeze the juice out of its characters with more skill and maturity than a series like Velma, especially when it comes to Daphne and her relationship with Fred, or why Not: Shaggy and Scooby.

Its plot is wonderful, unpredictable without being forced and capable of maintaining our interest during its scarce 76 minutes, it is worth giving it a chance.

Cómo alguien que es bastante asustadizo pero al mismo tiene una fascinación por el terror Scooby Doo era perfecto, mezclando monstruos fascinantes con buenos momentos de comedia, tramas interesantes y un grupo de personajes iconicos que trascienden cualquier serie o película que intente adaptarlos.

Para mi, parte del atractivo radicaba que al finalizar cada episodio se le dejaba claro al espectador que los elementos paranormales de cada episodio eran fabricados por el villano de turno, quienes generalmente se hacían valer de un juego de humo, luces e ilusiones para engañar a la mistery gang.

Menciono todo este asunto no solo porque era lo me daba un poco de calma después de todos los sustos, sino porque en el 99% de media relacionada con la creación de Joe Ruby y Ken Spears usa esto como un rasgo característico.

Por esta misma razón estoy seguro de que muchos de ustedes habrán escuchado en algún momento de sus vidas de la existencia de Scooby Doo on Zombie Island, una película animada de 1998 que rompe con esta tradición, creando en el camino una de las piezas más fascinantes de toda la franquicia en uno de los lugares más inesperados.

No obstante, con esto no quiere decir que la forma en la que Scooby Doo on Zombie Island aborda lo paranormal es su único atractivo, todo lo contrario, estamos ante una producción que aprovecha al máximo las posibilidades audiovisuales de su propio medio, entregandonos una animación hermosa estéticamente que respeta el mito de sus personajes, permitiendo que los mismos evolucionen de forma orgánica.

¿Recuerdan "Velma"? ¿La serie animada para adultos que se estrenó hace unos meses en HBO Max? Aunque era fácil sentirse ofendido por los chistes subidos de tono así como por el uso intermitente de vulgaridades, su mayor pecado en realidad fue el poco respeto que le tuvo al público y al conocimiento que tienen de la pandilla del misterio, convirtiendo cada miembro en una deconstrucción innecesaria de un tropo que solía funcionar perfectamente.

Zombie Island tiene un enfoque principalmente infantil, y por esto mismo es penoso que sea capaz de exprimirle el jugo a sus personajes con más habilidad y madurez que una serie como Velma, especialmente cuando se trata de Daphne y su relación con Fred, o por qué no: Shaggy y Scooby.

Su trama es una maravilla, impredecible sin caer en lo forzado y capaz de mantener nuestro interés durante sus escasos 76 minutos, vale la pena darle una oportunidad.
