Serial Experiments Lain is not just an anime—it’s a riddle, a digital dream, and a haunting reflection of our connection to technology. Released in 1998 and directed by Ryutaro Nakamura with character designs by Yoshitoshi ABe, it is one of the most influential and surreal works in anime history.
When I first watched it, I didn’t fully understand it—and that was the point. It stays with you, urging you to question reality, identity, and what it means to exist in a hyper-connected world.

The story follows Lain, a quiet schoolgirl who begins receiving strange messages from a classmate who has died. As she dives deeper into the Wired—an advanced network that mirrors and merges with reality—Lain discovers that the boundaries between herself, the internet, and existence itself are not as clear as they seem.
Is she just a girl, or something more?

The Wired in Lain feels eerily prophetic—a space where data, memory, and consciousness converge. Long before social media dominated our lives, this anime was already asking: what happens when our digital selves eclipse our physical ones?
The visuals are dreamlike, unsettling, and symbolic, pulling you into a narrative that’s as much about feelings as it is about plot.

The soundtrack enhances the series’ atmosphere of alienation and unease. From the hypnotic opening "Duvet" by BOA to the minimal, ambient background tracks, the music is both beautiful and haunting.
It creates a sense that you’re drifting between two worlds—never quite sure which one is real.
Serial Experiments Lain doesn’t hand you clarity—it hands you questions. Who are we when online? Where does identity begin and end? Can we separate the self from the network, or are we forever connected?
It’s a masterpiece of cyberpunk and psychological anime, and one of the most thought-provoking experiences you can have in animation.

Hello everyone, Hope your doing well and having wonderful time. Today I want to share a review wonderful anime name Serial Experiments Lain Which will tell you about the impact modern technology has on our lives.

Story Summary
Serial Experiments Line is a thought-provoking cyberpunk anime that will take you to the blurry border between reality and the virtual world. The story follows Line Iwakura, a quiet and socially awkward 14-year-old girl. Suddenly, one day, after one of her classmates committed suicide, she starts sending emails to her friends. After that, she gets caught up in a strange incident.
At first, Line is not interested in technology. But after receiving one of the mysterious emails, Line enters a virtual world called Wired. As she delve deeper, Line begins to undergo radical changes in personality and perception. Her shy demeanor is replaced by a confident, almost godlike version of herself in Wired.

This anime explores deep themes of loss of personal identity in a world of technology, the fragility of reality, and the psychological impact of constant digital presence. As the lines between the real world and the wired blur, Lane struggles to understand who he really is, if he even exists at all.

The haunting visuals, sound design, and slow-paced storytelling create an atmosphere of unease and curiosity. Each scene seems to question our psychological aspects. Technology, conspiracy, and mental breakdowns come together in a complex narrative that challenges the viewer to think deeply about modern life and human consciousness.

My review
Serial Experiments Lane is not an anime you just watch, it’s an experience. It left me confused and completely enthralled. The series delve into dark psychological themes and philosophical questions about reality, identity and the impact of the internet.
I was particularly impressed by the atmospheric instability, eerie sound design, and minimal background music that made each scene tense and disjointed. The transition from shy schoolgirl to the outside world was tragic and terrifying. This anime beautifully shows the impact modern technology has on our lives.
I think this is the kind of anime that once you start watching, you can't put it down. It's uncomfortable, deep, and thought-provoking, but it's not for everyone. Serial Experiments Lain is perfect for those looking for a different, psychological anime.
Thanks you so much for reading. See you next :)
NOTE: All the content is mine otherwise noted.

"Like it even matters what's real any more." A slow psychedelic show with a nice atmosphere in the first few episodes which quickly decays into ugly incomprehensible nonsense. Part of CIA's "war on realty", MKUltra and "Operation CHAOS" projects. "Reality is not even that real", fake family, fake people. CIA references all over, direct and indirect (Roswell, 1947 (year of CIA foundation), 1984, symbolism, etc.). "You are not a person, you are software!", merge-with-machine post-humanism.
Dark and disgusting. Beyond bad. Terrible after-taste. This show is one of the very worst that I've seen, if not the worst. Awful.
Also, most dialogues in the show are actually monologues when characters don't interact with each other, even when they have "conversations".

Greetings! I hope you are doing well today and I hope you had a great weekend, honestly these days took me forever for some strange reason, but, today I'm back to share with you a little of what I've been watching since last week, and no, today there is no place for romance, the series I'll talk about today is a bit confusing like Evangelion, but with fewer episodes, ideal for those who like me do not spend much time watching a series ...
¡Saludos!
Serial Experiments Lain is a 1998 series broadcast by TV Tokyo that focuses on the life of Lain Iwakura, a high school student who is quite shy and introverted, living with her family which consists of her also quiet sister Mika, her mother who is completely cold and her father who is obsessed with computers. Lain's life begins to change when one of her classmates is dismayed because Chisa Yomoda sent an email to her and everyone in the class, the weird thing? Chisa had committed suicide a week earlier. Lain gets home and sees that Chisa has also sent an email to her and instead of being afraid, she becomes more curious about the net and asks her father to buy her a Navi (a computer).
It's a little crazy to realize how this series was way ahead of its time, since nowadays we live practically 24/7 connected and distance is no longer an impediment. Now, many of you may be reading me in different parts of the world at the same time and technology is advancing more and more towards making it possible for us to be anywhere in the world without leaving home.
To be honest, I've wanted to watch this series for a long time, but I always fell asleep trying, but when I decided to watch it, I didn't blink an eye. It may seem a little slow, but if you look at the details, things out of the ordinary happen from the very first episode. On the other hand, the animation and drawing style of this one reminds me a lot of the movie Perfect Blue (which by the way I reviewed a few months ago and you can read here if you like), in which also strange things happen and you have to pay close attention, so if you are looking for a series to disconnect your brain, this is not one of them. I hope you are encouraged to watch Serial Experiments Lain soon, and if you already saw it tell me what you thought, I'll say goodbye for now, thank you very much for reading and see you later in another post ❤️

Today I'm going to talk about probably the most intense anime in life. It currently has cult status, being idolized by several fans on the Internet, although it is not as popular as most mainstream productions. This is an anime that you will see several times, and each time you will have new sensations. Something wonderful, even more so for those who like serious stories without luxury. Undoubtedly the most attractive cyberpunk anime that exists, Serial Experiments Lain deserves the attention of anyone who likes this subgenre of science fiction. It brings psychological and philosophical issues linked to human involvement with technology, planet Earth, other human beings and God himself. The anime seeks to generate discussion about certain concepts, often making use of non-verbal communication and knowledge of the viewer's world for this. Due to such reasons, it is not an anime for everyone, because those who prefer action-centered plots, for example, may not appreciate the experience. We are talking about a production made in 1998, when the Internet was still young, and that surprisingly was able to make modest predictions about this medium, such as the dependence of several people on it, as well as the way users change their personality when they are connected, whose representation is the protagonist himself, who assumes different personalities in the network. It is also worth mentioning the similarities between the group of anonymous hackers in the anime "Caballeros", and the group Anonymous.

The 13-episode series was launched by Triangle Staff, directed by Ryutaro Nakamura and designed by Yoshitoshi Abe in 1998. The beginning of the series is slow, but it becomes more and more attractive and open to interpretation. With each episode, a specific theme is adopted and throughout the episode it develops, but it is presented very symbolically and the story does not have its feet on the ground, so you have to travel along with it, you can't wait for things to happen with perfect logic and to fit perfectly, because they don't happen perfectly, because they don't happen, sometimes it goes through total insanity and then out of nowhere, everything returns to normal, it's as if you were watching several alternative realities happening at the same time. The elements found in this cyberpunk work; conspiracy theories, big corporations, a big world wide web that is capable of connecting human beings through brain/machine interfaces, questionable condition of the human being and more are combined with philosophical and psychological issues of high complexity, which gave the series the title of one of the most complex ever created. A large worldwide network of computers connects everyone to the same dimension, WIRED, a kind of evolution of our already complex Internet. I refer to this network as one dimension because it is exactly what it is shown to be: it has its height, width, depth and events reveal that time passes differently. Throughout the anime the dimensions become more and more confused until our reality is confused with that of the anime, leaving a feeling of Inception.

Right at the beginning of the series, we have an incredible scene. Chisa Yomoda, a high school student who at first seems amazing, commits suicide by throwing herself off a building. From then on, strange events start happening, as her classmates receive emails from the girl after her death, saying that she left her body, but she is still alive and that there is a "God" where she is. Such events awaken the curiosity of our protagonist. Lain is a shy girl who knows nothing about computers in a world where everyone accesses the net and knowledge about hardware is taught in school. Her life changes when she decides to check if she also received one of these emails. In fact, Lain received an email from the deceased girl. After the event, Lain asks her father for a new Navi (computer) that is used to explore the Wired. As Lain wanders off into unfamiliar territory, she gets involved in numerous strange situations. This is the turning point of the series, as it marks the beginning of a long journey of discovery between the two worlds: the real and the virtual, as they question their notion of reality and deeper beliefs. Lain begins to become increasingly familiar with the wiring, to the point that her own reality is influenced by this strange virtual world. In some scenes, we can hear a computer-like noise and in others the protagonist herself and the other characters talking in a robotic voice.

Many philosophical questions and concepts arise in anime such as: who are we really? Is there some kind of God? Are we all connected? What is really Lain? What is real after all, the world or the Wired? Because it addressed very current issues at the time it was launched, Serial Experiments Lain also draws us in by raising questions inherent in existentialism, anguish over the need for answers, and of course, fragility in interpersonal relationships through the Internet and online communities. In Wired, most users cannot fully represent their bodies. This can be understood as a reference to the fact that people show only parts of themselves when they are on the Internet. Sometimes it is impossible to know if Lain is in the real world or on the Wired. If anyone remembers the Matrix, they know that much of the film created by the Wachowski brothers has several elements taken from Lain.
Ryutaro's direction is excellent, the frames are great, the well-positioned camera games show a lot of what he wants to show. For example, during a conversation between Lain and Arisu, she says that "the real world is not so real", standing behind a railing of a building, conveying the idea that she feels trapped, caged. Abe's animation is a show apart. With bright colors, strong characters and a unique design, he creates a perfect setting for all the scenes. The series has the effect of maintaining hallucinations for so long that the viewer forgets that they are hallucinations, until the moment that reality appears.

Finally, Lain also portrays a lot about the development of telecommunications, which is becoming indispensable in today's world. He can identify the presence of poles, telephones and multiple telephone line cables in the foreground while only listening to what the characters are talking about. The anime not only raises several questions, but addresses many issues ranging from the existence of a "God" to the manipulation of thoughts and memories. Serial Experiments Lain is a different, intriguing and compelling anime for those who enjoy a complex story.

Released in 1998, Serial Experiments Lain cemented itself as a late-cyberpunk, thought-provoking and cryptic animation show with its deep existential questions and self-realisation. It's a show that details the slow decent of humanity into the Wired; a universe built on top of and inside technology: a cyberspace.
Starting with an introverted young adolescent named Lain Iwakura, her world becomes riddled with obscurities after a former student and classmate commits suicide, yet somehow sends everyone an email weeks after her death.
Rumours regarding the student begin to arise: is she now confined to the walls and laws of cyberspace? Has she abandoned her physical body in death but transcended into a higher form within the Wired? For Lain, this begins her deep interest in the Wired, constantly spending nights alone with her hardware, modifying and enhancing it to the best she can.
The show's themes extend beyond the technological side of the Wired, and into reality; it does so by suggesting that the Wired is very different to reality, after all, what even is reality? If two different realities exist, are neither real? Does this reality really hold any weight compared to the greatness of cyberspace, where people can essentially act as gods?
The show often teases themes of what may happen if someone does discover the ability to upload their consciousness to the Internet; the powers they would receive, and how they might go about using them. For Lain, she discovers that all that power actually resides within her, yet she is unsure about joining those within the Wired, for good. Ultimately, her perception of reality disappears. Reality and the Wired are one.
Outside of its narrative, for a show in 1998, it predicted the heavily reliance modern humankind has on technology, it's slow abandonment of nature, and descent into cables, circuitry and pixels.
