Hello film and TV lovers! I hope you are having a great Sunday. I had been wanting to watch those movies that are a bit older but are considered some of the best from the early 2000s for a very long time. One of the ones on my list was She's The Man, directed by Andy Fickman and starring Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum in a teen romance story. I was really looking forward to watching it because I had already seen a few clips on TikTok. Plus, I like Channing's acting and the work I've seen him in, like one of the music videos by the singer P!nk, who spoke openly about having a crush on him haha 😂🥰.
The movie's plot introduces us to Viola (Amanda Bynes), a young woman who is passionate about soccer but gets brushed aside simply for being a woman, even though her dream is to play professionally. When her team is scrapped just because they are women—without anyone even taking a look at their great potential—Viola makes a radical decision: to pose as her brother Sebastian while he goes on a trip to pursue one of his own goals related to his passion for music. This opportunity is critical for Viola because she feels she will be able to prove she has what it takes to be part of a soccer team regardless of being a woman.
The film shows how Viola completely changes her look to resemble her brother and replaces him at the new school he was supposed to attend. It is a drastic shift; with guy's clothes, a wig, and a male voice and attitude, Viola begins executing her plan. However, the hardest part is pretending to be a man in front of all her peers, especially Duke (Channing Tatum), her roommate who feels a bit confused by the way she—or "he"—acts. Everything she has to navigate and do to stay under the radar is completely crazy, but little by little she earns everyone's trust.
Since it is a mid-2000s movie, it carries many signature elements of the era: the way locations are shot, the jokes about girls, and the portrayal of how men can be quite insufferable yet also show a more human and sensitive side. Viola ends up having to play Cupid in a deal she strikes with Duke so they can both get something in return: Duke would win the heart of one of the most popular girls in school, and Viola would get the chance to play on the team and prove she has far more potential than they think.
The soundtrack fits the time perfectly; many of the songs are easily recognizable since they were played constantly back then and are now seen as tracks that defined a generation. There is also the central premise of a girl pretending to be a guy for a while—how that can confuse so many people, and how it can snowball into such a massive mess that you no longer know how to fix it because of all the lies told. It is an entertaining film, even if a bit long. There is great chemistry among the cast, and it delivers a fresh take on teen romance that many might enjoy.
What I enjoyed most was the comedy side of it. There were things Viola did that seemed mind-boggling and made you feel like she was going to be exposed at any second. Plus, it is quite funny to think she could pull off being a man when everything about her appearance and personality clearly signaled she was a girl. I think it is one of Amanda Bynes's best films from her time in Hollywood, before things ended up the way they are today—likely a result of childhood fame and industry exploitation.
I suppose I didn't love that it was so long, but it was fun to watch. Ultimately, both Viola—who dreamed of being a soccer player—and her brother—who wanted to pursue music—demonstrate that they followed their dreams regardless of what others thought, including their parents, who opposed both of their goals. On the other hand, the romantic subplots in the story are fun: some are unexpected, while others develop after a lot of closeness and connection. I liked seeing Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum as a couple on screen;
I thought the ending was sweet, and I feel it is one of those stories I probably would have enjoyed even more as a teenager. I invite you to check out this movie; you might really like it ❤️

Tenía mucho tiempo queriendo ver esas películas que son antiguas pero que se consideran de las mejores de principios de los 2000. Una de las que estaba en mi lista era She's The Man dirigida por Andy Fickman con Amanda Bynes y Channing Tatum como protagonistas de una historia de romance juvenil. Realmente tenía muchas ganas de verla porque ya había visto algunos clips por TikTok, además de que me gusta la actuación de Channing y los trabajos en los que lo he visto, cómo en uno de los videoclips musicales de la cantante P!nk quien habló abiertamente de que tenía un crush con él jaja 😂🥰.
La trama de la película nos lleva a conocer a Viola (Amanda Bynes) una joven que le apasiona el fútbol pero que es dejada a un lado solo por ser mujer, cuando su sueño es jugar como alguien profesional. Cuando su equipo es descartado porque son solamente mujeres sin siquiera ver el gran potencial que tienen, Viola toma una decisión radical: hacerse pasar por su hermano Sebastián mientras el se va de viaje a cumplir una de sus metas que tiene que ver con su pasión por la música. Esta oportunidad es decisiva para Viola porque siente que podrá demostrar que tiene lo necesaria para ser parte de un equipo de fútbol a pesar de ser mujer.
La película muestra cómo Viola se cambia completamente el look para parecerse a su hermano y lo sustituye en la nueva escuela a la que éste iba a entrar. Es un cambio radical, con la vestimenta de un chico, una peluca y una voz y actitud de hombre, Viola empieza a llevar a cabo su plan. Pero lo más complicado es fingir ser un hombre delante de todos sus compañeros en especial de Duke (Channing Tatum) con quien comparte habitación y quien más se siente un poco extraño por la manera en que ella o "él" actúa. Es loquisimo todo lo que tiene que ver y hacer para pasar desapercibida, pero poco a poco se va ganando la confianza de todos.
Es una película de mediados de los 2000 por lo que tiene muchas escenas, la forma en la que muestran los lugares, los chistes sobre chicas, la manera en la que muestran cómo los hombres pueden llegar a ser bastante insoportables y también cómo pueden tener su lado más humano y sensible. Viola tiene que pasar de ser cupido en un trato que hace con Duke para que ambos puedan ganar algo a cambio, Duke ganaría el amor de una de las chicas más populares de la escuela y Viola ganaría la oportunidad de jugar en el equipo y demostrar que tiene mucho más potencial de lo que creen.
La música es muy acorde a la época, muchas canciones son reconocibles ya que sonaban mucho en esos tiempos y ahora se ven como canciones que marcaron una generación. También está la idea de que una chica finja por un tiempo ser un chico, cómo esto puede confundir a tantas personas, cómo puede ser un problema tan grande que ya no sepas ni cómo resolverlo por tantas mentiras ya dichas. Es una película divertida aunque un poco larga, hay mucha química entre los actores y es una historia diferente de romance juvenil que puede que a muchos les gustara.
Lo que más me gustó fue el lado de la comedia, habían cosas que hacía Viola que parecían insólitas y que hacían que sintieras que en cualquier momento sería descubierta además de que es bastante raro pensar en que podía fingir ser un hombre cuando todo en su físico y su personalidad hacían notar que era una chica. Creo que es una de las mejores películas de Amanda Bynes, cuando aún estaba dentro del mundo de Hollywood y no había terminado de la manera en la que está actualmente, probablemente producto de la misma explotación y fama a muy temprana edad.
Creo que no me gustó que fuese tan extensa pero fue divertida de ver, creo que tanto el personaje de Viola quien tenía el sueño de ser futbolista como el personaje de su hermano quién quería dedicarse a la música, al final demuestran que siguieron sus sueños sin importar lo que otros opinaran incluyendo sus padres que se oponían a estas metas de ambos. Por otro lado, los romances que hay en la historia son divertidos, algunos inesperados, otros que se dan después de mucha cercanía y conexión. Me gusto ver tanto a Amanda Bynes con Channing Tatum como una pareja en la película, me pareció tierno el final y creo que es de esas historias que probablemente me hubieran gustado más siendo adolescente.
