SHE happens to be a movie I enjoyed so much; it is a movie by the amazing Funke Akindele herself, and today, I will be starting from episode one.
SHE is a story of Siyanbola, a very successful musician who's so determined to not just reach the top but as well remain there. And I love how the movie began by showing us how she won an award while some of her other contestants had no option but to just look, gossip, and hiss at her.
Now, the most catchy part of it is how she appears to be perfect on the outside but is definitely another thing inside. She's always acting all good and like the overall best in public, but behind the scenes she's a totally different person.
Along the line, something grew between Siyanbola (SHE) and Tito, one of the good musicians in town. Tito actually won an award Siyanbola had thought would be hers, and that made things a lot more awkward between them. Well, she still tries doing her best and doing all she could to just be and remain in the spotlight. But then, with time, her true color began to show up as she began to talk, to do stuff, and to interact. People began to suspect her, and she, in turn, who already knew how to play her game, began to do what she knew to do best and manipulate people just so to keep herself and protect her reputation and personality.
This first episode is just a must-watch; like I said earlier, it is a movie from Funke Akindele, and you'll agree with me that she's an amazing actor. One of Nigeria's top actors. She did a good job with SHE; she showed us what the music industry can look like, how competition takes place there, how they (musicians) often do, and the extent to which they always go just so they can get an award or remain at the top while not giving others coming behind them a chance.
I can't just stop talking about Funke Akindele (Siyanbola); I love how she wasn't trying to fit into the role but was more like that character was her, the real her. I love the way she talks, smiles, and carries herself in public, while she's a completely different person behind the wall. Furthermore, I can still be able to describe who she is in public, but who she is behind closed doors is something I will have a hard time explaining. She did so much to that character as she switched from good in public to bad in private.
Also, do not go into this movie expecting your regular kind of Nollywood series movie; nah, this is different. And like I said earlier, my most enjoyed scenes were the award-giving parts. There's even one where Siyanbola was there giving her best, dancing and singing with her crew, and was so sure she was getting the award and then finally lost that particular award to Tito, another contestant.
The likes of Lateef Adedimeji, Bishop, Waje, Lizzy Jay, and others that starred in the movie also made it more interesting. Episode one is that episode you shouldn't miss; it introduces us to the movie, and it also is that episode that shows you how the rivalry between Siyanbola and Tito started. A very interesting one, I must say, and it even became more interesting when we saw Victoria and her own story, how she's connected to Siyanbola and what exactly was happening behind the scenes.
I love the movie so much, but then, I feel since it is in a series/episodes, then all of those characters shouldn't have to show up so fast. They could have made it simpler and just introduced those other characters slowly into the movie as it progresses. Also, right from the first episode, you can tell that Siyanbola is a manipulative and wicked person who's only showing a fake good side in public; that shouldn't have been too obvious in the first episode. We should still be made to guess who she actually is and what she's capable of doing.
Still, I promise you that you won't and might probably not even notice some of these odds as the movie was shot and handled so well. It is one that will keep you glued to the screen and make you want to instantly dive into the second episode.
