Hello friends of the Movies & Tv community, I hope you are doing great today. Today I want to talk to you about a movie from the year 2023 called Side Effects directed by Steven Soderbergh, with a phenomenal cast and with a plot that kept me expectant until the end of the movie. Before I start I must say that it is a Psychological Thriller genre film, which mentions names of psychiatric drugs and shows scenes where the protagonist causes harm to herself and other people so I do not recommend this type of film to people under age or who are in a vulnerable moment of mental health.

Being a film lover I have found that psychological thrillers are one of my favorite genres in movies, previously I had seen films of this style as Girl Interrupted and Perfect Blue that address issues openly and very graphically mental health and the film that today I come to recommend also touches these issues and is called Side Effects, this story tells the life of a woman named Emily Taylor played by Rooney Mara who is going through a strong depression because her husband Martin played by Channing Tatum is in prison serving a sentence. The years have passed and Emily has completely changed from the person who was a cheerful and smiling girl to a rather dull and depressed person who thinks that when her husband Martin's sentence is over she will be able to improve her depression and feel better but things do not go as she expected.

Emily goes to a psychiatrist named Jonathan Banks played by Jude Law who has a good reputation as a psychiatrist, he receives Emily in his office and she tells him that she tried to take her own life, while they talk you can see that Emily is quite depressed and that despite being back with her husband she no longer feels herself, so Dr. Banks prescribes a drug to help her sleep and also to improve her mood. But an unfortunate event occurs where a person ends up dead because of Emily and this causes her to be deprived of her freedom and have to face the fact that she is now a murderer, although according to what she confesses in court is that she does not remember anything of what happened and that she would be incapable of killing a person.

I don't want to make too many spoilers of this movie that has a duration of one hour and forty minutes in which I felt very excited and expectant to know what was behind Mara's depression and also the death of that person who was very close to her, what reasons would she have to murder a person if she was already in treatment for depression and had seen improvements in her behavior and then everything changed from one moment to another. This movie is pretty good in my opinion although it touches on mental health issues in an easy to understand way, at the same time there are so many things that you are left wondering after you finish watching it and that is what a person can hide behind a seemingly normal appearance.

There is a whirlwind of unexpected scenes that make the film full of suspense and drama, in my opinion the acting of Rooney Mara and Jude Law were impeccable, all those moments they spent together where you could feel the tension and the pressure of the journalists on Dr. Banks for being Emily's doctor and for not having prevented that she was going to end up killing someone is very interesting and leaves you reflecting on how a person can tell lies that seem so real that can make people believe you including your doctor, I did not expect those last minutes of the movie that were certainly the best of it.

    Introduction

We live in a time when technological progress has enabled us to greatly improve the quality of our lives and their length of them. Suffice it to say that in the 1800s an infant had the same life expectancy as one of his or her paleolithic peers. But what caused folks to die? accidents, illnesses, and conflicts that couldn't be fixed by rushing to the hospital. Together with unsanitary conditions and a climate that made people susceptible to heatstroke, hypothermia, and other violent natural occurrences. Through improved sanitation, medicines, and medical care, modernity has contributed to universal wealth, but it has also flooded our homes with processed foods and dangerous substances. Ancient men were slim, strong and free of the chronic illnesses that plague modern men today, like cancer, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. Our era has been the fortune of many pharmaceutical companies, who in the name of medicine and progress have sometimes crossed the line of morality for reasons that are not so noble, such as the god of money. "Side Effects" is about this, pharmaceutical companies and their unethical practices, mental health, and the legal system.

    Depression and drugs

In "Side Effects," Rooney Mara's protagonist, battles the plague of depression, which she experiences as a pain of life (her performance is impressive). Yet the disease is only one part of the tragedy; in the fast-paced world of today, a 28-year-old businesswoman can only deal with her weaknesses by turning to dangerous and predictable psychotropic medicines. The movie's characters attend events, go to work, interact with people on the street, and give drugs as gifts or recommendations to friends.  But, the movie turns into a medical thriller when Emily's drug addiction causes her to do something wrong. Who is responsible if a crimina act is perpretrated while under the influence of psychoactive substances? who actually committed the acts of violence? The person itself or the physician who was unable to foresee future events based on past ones?

    The movie

The movie is split into two main parts. The first part is rather slow, illustrating the dramatic situation of the protagonist and allowing us to get emotionally closer to the characters. A second section follows, marked by a series of twists and turns that are anything but predictable and which take the movie in an unexpected direction. Soderbergh knows how to surprise the viewer; he naively leads us in the direction of what initially seems to be a foreseeable development of the plot, just to change the register, confusing and diverting those who had fooled themselves into thinking there would be a simple ending. The moments that demand particular attention are never lacking, and the tension and sense that something intriguing is about to happen persist throughout the movie, despite the pace being unquestionably slow and the lack of action or any other element that deviates from the canons of the ideal psychological thriller. A strong screenplay, a cast that includes important actors of the caliber of Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and a plot that pays close attention to every detail are other remarkable components that add that something more to this already excellently packaged movie.

    Plot

Emily (Rooney Mara) is motivated to get treatment for her anxiety after losing her equilibrium. After being given a daily regime of conventional antidepressants that had little effect on her condition, Emily can finally find happiness, vitality, and a profound love for her husband Martin after switching to experimental medication. But, Martin is fatally murdered one night in their kitchen, and when the police show up there, Emily is found with a knife still in her hand, even though she has no memory of what happened.

    Conclusion

There are films that surprise you while you are watching them. I had a similar feeling while watching Gone Girl, a 2014 film by David Fincher. You watch the first part of the film and it seems boring... not bad or badly directed or acted, just boring... an exercise in style by the director, good actors but a predictable plot... then something happens, an unexpected detail suddenly changes the plot and overturns everything we thought we understood. This, at least for me, makes the film even more interesting (although I have to have the patience to get there 😅). A super recommended film if you like thrillers, with the advice of course not to stop halfway through but to keep watching it... it's worth it!!! > press here to scroll back to the index

    ---

Year: 2013 Category: Psychological Thriller. Director: Steven Soderbergh. Cast: Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Channing Tatum, Vinessa Shaw, Ann Dowd.

    Plot

Emily suffers from depression and consumes many and varied medications, which causes very damaging side effects, something that harms the career of her psychiatrist, Dr. Jonathan Banks.

    Opinion

The film tells the story of Emily Taylor, who experiences depressive episodes after her husband Martin Taylor leaves prison after 4 years, which motivates her to attempt suicide by crashing her car against a wall. This causes Dr. Jonathan Banks, a psychiatrist, to treat Emily medically, but not before consulting with Dr. Victoria Siebert about the case, since she was Emily's psychiatrist some years ago when Martin went to prison.

Slowly the story shows us how Emily must deal with the different side effects of the medications and antidepressants that are prescribed by Jonathan, who in turn receives money from drug companies for prescribing the medication. From this point of view the film seems a criticism to pharmacists, psychiatry and the entire medical and judicial system, however, a violent event in which Emily is involved affects the career of Jonathan and later his personal life with his wife, Deirdre Banks, and her son.

In this way the film, which until then was basically a criticism of the system, becomes a thriller, and does so not only changing the meaning of the events, but also alters the point of view from which the story is told, to finally include a series of flashbacks that explain everything.

The director, Steven Soderbergh, who also directed Unsane, does well here, takes the viewer down a path and then changes things, giving a new meaning to what the viewer was seeing. The performances are good too, Rooney Mara makes it great, but everyone does an acceptable job, Jude Law was a good choice for the film, his personal charisma makes us not totally hate his character in the first half of the film, something that is important for the development of the following events. Channing Tatum and Vinessa Shaw have a smaller participation, but their interpretations are convincing without being necessarily outstanding, however, I think that Catherine Zeta-Jones did not do her best participation here, it does not totally convince me, especially in the second part of the film, but it's fine, it's not a fundamental mistake either.

In short, it is a film that at first seems to be something, a criticism of the pharmaceutical and judicial system and the excessive consumption of drugs in America, and that suddenly, with a big twist, becomes a thriller.

    Score

    8/10

Good direction, good script, good interpretations, and a deceptive story that seems to be something but ends up being something else. At the time of publishing this review the film is available in the Netflix catalog for the following countries: Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Romania, Slovakia, South Korea and Sweden.
