Since we are getting closer to Christmas, I feel that this is the best time to watch all the movies and television specials that exist inspired by these festivities, something that by the way has always been one of my favorite parts of the entire holiday.
And what better Christmas special to start with than the Simpsons, one of the longest-running animated series in the world and a cultural phenomenon that we all connect with at some point in our lives, created as a satirical deconstruction of the american nuclear family but at the same time the source of hundreds of emotional moments over the years.
What not many know is that the first episode of The Simpsons (which by the way premiered more than 34 years ago) was conceived as a Christmas special, a curious decision that probably had to do with a relatively chaotic production system, but which suited him very well considering that this episode was a perfect synthesis of all the virtues of Matt Groening's animated series, at least when it was at its best.
Although many tend to talk about "the golden age" of the Simpsons as those seasons that came after the third and before the tenth (Be careful, this may vary from fan to fan), I am surprised by the ability that the first chapters had to give Spot on with so many revolutionary aspects of the yellow family, something evident in every second of "Simpsons roasting on an open fire", directed by David Silverman and (obviously) produced by Groening himself.
The Simpsons Christmas Special works because it effortlessly manages to achieve the perfect balance that makes The Simpsons one of the best sitcoms of all time: a hilarious mix of comedy with emotional moments that are easy to identify with, portraying familiar experiences from a cynical point of view but capable of seeing the beautiful in the banal.
Thus we follow the struggle of Homer Simpson when in the middle of Christmas he discovers that his boss Mr. Berns will not give them a Christmas bonus, while at the same time Bart ends up making Marge spend the entire year's savings to erase a tattoo with a laser. made "as a gift", this forces Homer to look for alternative ways to make money, dressing as Santa to work in a shopping center, or betting on dog races in the middle of Christmas Eve.
The point is that The Simpsons does not at any point glorify the American Christmas experience, something that we generally tend to see in all movies and television series (which also tend to focus on upper-middle class families), embracing economic problems as something that It can happen to anyone but recognizing that there is happiness beyond materialism.
Clearly all the members of the family have much less defined personalities than what we come to know later, and the animation is much rougher and sloppier, however, I applaud the brave decision to take this as a starting point for a series like the Simpsons, something that paid off in the long run.
Cómo cada vez nos encontramos más cerca de la navidad siento que este es el mejor momento para ponerse a ver todas las películas y especiales de televisión que existen inspirados en estas festividades, algo que por cierto siempre ha resultado una de mis partes favoritas de toda la epoca.
Y que mejor especial de navidad para empezar que el de los Simpsons, una de las series animadas más longevas de todo el mundo y un fenómeno cultural con el que todos conectamos en algún momento de nuestras vidas, creado como una deconstrucción satírica a la familia nuclear Americana pero al mismo tiempo la fuente de cientos de momentos emotivos a lo largo de los años.
Lo que no muchos saben es que es el primer episodio de los Simpsons (Que por cierto se estrenó hace más de 34 años) fue concebido como un especial navideño, una decisión curiosa que probablemente tuvo que ver con un sistema de producción relativamente caótico, pero que le sentó muy bien considerando que este episodio era una sintetización perfecta de todas las virtudes de la serie animada de Matt Groening, al menos cuando se encontraba en su mejor momento.
Aunque muchos suelen hablar de "la era dorada" de los Simpsons como aquellas temporadas que vinieron después de la tercera y antes de la décima (Ojo, esto puede variar entre fan y fan), me sorprende la habilidad que tuvieron los primeros capítulos para dar en el clavo con tantos aspectos revolucionarios de la familia amarilla, algo evidente en cada segundo de "Simpsons roasting on a open fire", dirigido por David Silverman y (obviamente) producido por el mismísimo Groening.
El especial navideño de los Simpsons funciona porque sin esfuerzo logra conseguir el balance perfecto que hace los Simpsons una de las mejores sitcoms de todos los tiempos: una mezcla hilarante de comedia con momentos emotivos con los cuales es fácil sentirse identificado, retratando experiencias familiares desde un punto de vista cínico pero capaz de ver lo hermoso en lo banal.
Así seguimos la lucha de Homero Simpson cuando en plena navidad descubre que su jefe el señor Berns no les dará un bono navideño, mientras que al mismo tiempo Bart termina haciendo que Marge gaste los ahorros de todo el año para borrar con láser un tatuaje que se hizo "como regalo", esto obliga a Homero a buscar formas alternativas de hacer dinero, vistiendo como Santa para trabajar en un centro comercial, o apostando en carreras de perros en plena noche buena.
La cuestión es que The Simpsons no glorifica en ningún momento la experiencia navideña norteamericana, algo que generalmente solemos ver en todas las películas y series de televisión (Que aparte suelen centrarse en familias de clase media alta), abrazando los problemas económicos como algo que le puede ocurrir a cualquiera pero reconociendo que existe felicidad más allá del materialismo.
Claramente todos los miembros de la familia tienen personalidades mucho menos definidas de lo que llegamos a conocer más adelante, y la animación es mucho más áspera y desprolija, no obstante, aplaudo la valiente decision de tomar este como punto de partida para una serie como los Simpsons, algo que a largo plazos rindió frutos.
