In my favourite Xmas movies post, I neglected to mention my favourite tv program, which I guess is fair because it isn’t a movie, so I’ll shut up about it.

Anyway, in the winter of 1989, the then brand new, animated, television series The Simpsons debuted their premiere episode, a Christmas-themed special titled, Simpsons Roasting Over an Open Fire. It was brand new and I didn’t see it for several years but it quickly became a favourite show for me.

This episode was not supposed to be the first episode of the series but animation problems delayed the original pilot and moved this one forward by default. This is the story of how Santa’s Little Helper came to join the family and, a clue it wasn’t the original pilot, proceeded to disappear from the rest of the first season because much of the season was planned to be pre-Xmas special.

Regardless, this is a great one. Homer still sounds like Walter Matthau and not like, um, Homer. The characters don’t yet look like they do now. Marge spends the Christmas money to get a tattoo removed from Bart’s arm and Homer doesn’t get his annual Christmas bonus and takes a job as a mall Santa in hopes of raising the money to get presents for the family. Hijinks ensue and, SPOILER!!! he has to go to the dog track to try and win the money to save Christmas. Anyway, the show ends Santa’s Little Helper joins the family.

    It’s awesome!
