Considered by many to be one of the best horror films of recent years, "Skinamarink" is one of those cases where there is no middle ground: either you love it, or you hate it.
And the low-budget Canadian film directed by Kyle Edward Ball perfectly represents all the clichés that we usually associate with pretentious cinema, starting from an interesting premise but executing it in such an inconvenient way that it is laughable.
You see, in Skinamarink we are shown the story of a boy and a girl who are locked in their own house, meanwhile they notice that several of their objects (Doors, bathroom, decoration, etc.) mysteriously disappear.
The point is that, loosely inspired by analog humor and the concept of liminal spaces, in Skinamarink we see how events unfold in a very particular way, through indirect angles where the corners of the house, the floor, and the , the ceiling, etc... All this presented with a VHS recording style that uses film grain, imperfections and the darkness of the environment to disconcert the viewer and fill with ambiguity every moment in which the plot advances in one direction. Another way.
While this sounds like an extremely tedious way to consume a film (and in some ways I think it is) it must be recognized that in aesthetic terms Skinamarink is an extremely powerful film that uses its own limitations to its advantage and that feels like a refreshing paradigm shift compared to other more "traditional" proposals of the genre (It's impossible for Paranormal Activity or the Blair Witch Project not to come to mind).
As a person who is difficult to make uncomfortable in front of a screen, I admit that at least in this sense I did manage to connect with the idea of Skinamarink, a film that manages to capture very well a state of irrational desperation that many of us will have felt at some point in our childhood, feeling trapped, bewildered and unable to deal with a situation we barely understand.
This is reinforced by the recurring use of images and sounds that in an ordinary situation would evoke nostalgia, but recontextualized here they acquire a murky and threatening aura.
Does this mean that I liked Skinamarink? Although until now I have done nothing more than mention its virtues, the truth is that it has not, and the reason is quite simple: this same story could have been told in a much shorter amount of time, generating the same impact on the viewer.
With almost two hours of duration, Skinamarink knows how to hook the viewer but it hardly gives them anything valuable in return beyond the moments of tension that are here and there, considering that it is a film that requires our absolute immersion to have an effect, it is counterproductive to prolonged it for so long, generating the sensation that we are going around the same plot points and reducing the weight of its strongest moments a little bit.

Considerada por muchos como una de las mejores películas de terror de los últimos años "Skinamarink" es uno de esos casos en dónde no existe un punto medio: o la amas, o la odies.
Y es que el filme canadiense de bajo presupuesto dirigido por Kyle Edward Ball representa a la perfección todos los cliches que solemos asociar con el cine pretencioso, partiendo de una premisa interesante pero ejecutandola de una forma tan inconveniente que da risa.
Veran, en Skinamarink se nos muestra la historia de un niño y una niña que se encuentran encerrados en su propia casa, mientras tanto se van notando que varios de sus objetos (Puertas, baño, decoración, etc) desaparecen misteriosamente.
La cuestión es que, vagamente inspirada por el humor analógico y el concepto de los liminal spaces, en Skinamarink vamos viendo como los eventos se desenvuelven de forma muy particular, por medio de ángulos indirectos en dónde se enfocan las esquinas de la casa, el suelo, el techo, etc... Todo esto presentado con un estilo de grabación en VHS que emplea el film grain, las imperfecciones y la oscuridad del ambiente para desconcertar al espectador y llenar de ambigüedad cada momento en el que la trama avanza de una u otra forma.
Si bien esto suena como una forma extremadamente tediosa de consumir un film (Y en cierta parte creo que lo es) hay que reconocer que en términos estéticos Skinamarink es una película extremadamente potente que emplea sus propias limitaciones a su favor y que se siente como un cambio de paradigma refrescante ante otras propuestas más "tradicionales" del género (Imposible que no se nos venga a la mente Actividad Paranormal o the Blair Witch Project).
Como una persona difícil de incomodar ante una pantalla admito que al menos en este sentido si logré conectar con la idea de Skinamarink, un film que logra capturar muy bien un estado de desesperación irracional con el que muchos habremos sentido en algún momento de nuestra infancia, sintiéndonos encerrados, desconcertados e incapaces de lidiar con una situación que a penas entendemos.
Esto se ve reforzado por el uso recurrente de imágenes y sonidos que en una situación ordinaria evocarian nostalgia, pero recontexualidados aquí adquieren un aura turbia y amenazante.
¿Esto quiere decir que Skinamarink me gustó? Aunque hasta el momento no he hecho más que mencionar sus virtudes la verdad es que no, y la razón es bastante simple: está misma historia pudo haberse narrado en una cantidad de tiempo muchísimo menor generando el mismo impacto en el espectador.
Con casi dos horas de duración, Skinamarink sabe enganchar al espectador pero difícilmente le entregue algo valioso a cambio más allá de los momentos de tensión que están aquí y allá, considerando que es un filme que requiere nuestra inmersión absoluta para hacer efecto es contraproducente que se prolongue por tanto tiempo, generando la sensación de que estamos dando vueltas por los mismos plot points y reduciendo un poco el peso de sus momentos más fuertes.
