  1. Movies You Need To Watch At Least Once: Sorry To Bother You@amirtheawesome11585d

Hello, everyone, and welcome to my new series. In this series, I will dive through movies that are lesser-known or have lost at the box office and argue why you should watch them. I obviously rate these movies highly, and I hope you find new movies that you'll like in this series. Today's movie is

    Sorry To Bother You

    image.png Image source

    Quick Summary

This summary won't include anything outside the trailer.

Cassius is a broke black man who is desperate for a job that he chooses to work for a telemarketing company. He struggles at work, which leads a coworker to suggest he uses his "white voice", that advice pays off as Cassius goes higher in the ranks thanks to his "white voice".

Cassius enters a world that shows how capitalism strives all the while attempting to balance his home life with his artist/rebel girlfriend, adding to that a man going from town to town creating protests.

    What Makes The Movie Special?

The movie is absurd, not that it's silly, but rather has an absurdist approach. When you really think about it, most movies have a political message nowadays unless they were superhero movies. This movie is no different. What's different, however, is that it doesn't forget to be a movie in the process.

Unlike many movies like "Don't Look Up" where the actors might as well just get their heads out of your screen and scream their points directly at you, this movie feels like it was inspired by an idea and not a movie attempting to push an idea. It creates a world with a point of view beautifully and then you may or may not agree with it.

    The Ideas

The overall ideas aren't really anything I agree with personally. But, as I said, the movie feels like a conversation with a friend you disagree with. It points out that its problem is with the system and not aiming to attack people personally, evident by the fact that the moviemaker taking out the line "Worry Free is making America great again" even though it was written before Trump became president.

The movie doesn't make it a secret that it is anti-capitalist in the sense of how it attempts to control people. Also, it takes a very false consciousness, Marxist approach that you may or may not agree with, but you will definitely enjoy and appreciate the way it is laid out.

    The Script

One thing our main character has to always do is stick to the script. He is not allowed to deviate from it and go against it. The goal is to increase the corporation's (Named Worry Free) revenue. As an employee, you're not allowed to have or apply your own thoughts, especially if they were more human-based but could decrease revenue. There's a certain feeling of dehumanization to the employees, especially when coupled with

    The "White Voice"

The "white voice" is something displayed by literally having white actors voice the black characters at times is intriguing as it is not based on a racial difference as much as it is used to point out how marketing is done in a way that is meant to be soothing and "worry-free". All employees need to have a specific corporate-created voice rather than their own.

That voice is what works for the masses, and it is what keeps them selling to the masses. The process could have been a simple "do you need this product?", but instead it became about how you can sell it using soft force.

The voice is simply about how sometimes we need to be something we're not in order to gain something.

    The Third Act

The third act seems to be where people are disagreeing the most and I will leave the judgment of that to you. But, it is important to remember is that the movie has its own point to make.

Now, for the best part about the movie.

    The World

The movie creates a very intriguing world around the characters. The post-traumatic growth in some characters, the most popular show resembles our vicarious nature, the corporatization of national heroes, meme-based celebrities.

The movie does a great job with its metaphors, it goes further and further away from reality in order to explain reality. The Easter eggs are a joy to get through.

    In Conclusion

All of the movie aspects create an immensely great cinematic experience that I feel you'd be missing out on if you don't watch it yourself.

  2. Sorry to Bother You on Netflix@netflixr2007d

The trailer for Sorry to Bother You first sucked me in because it was only 30 seconds long but it was hilarious. It shows 2 people who are friends and are complimenting one another in a very aggressive way so that if you didn't speak the language you would think they were about to throw hands but in actuality they are saying how wonderful the other person smells and how they want to get together with them and buy them some drinks because they think they are a great person.

Then Danny Glover steps in and breaks it up: A lot of the rest of the film is like this as well and for the most part I think people will enjoy it.

However, there are some downsides to this film that unfortunately seems to be a big part of the overall Hollywood political agenda.

    fox200907FullImage_GalleryCoverenUS1553289502696.UY500_UX667_RI_V1a16bd269a4352ac2ba8f2f02d95b020_TTW.jpg src

Originally released in 2018, this film is another one of those ones that didn't have much of a marketing budget behind it and I didn't have any idea it even existed until a few days ago when it was released on Netflix. It is a dark comedy that is meant to be a comedic reflection of the actual USA society. Some of it I agree with, some of it refers to aspects of society that myself and many others are kind of tired of hearing the propaganda about. This propaganda is the insinuation that minorities are intentionally repressed by Caucasians and that the only way a black man can get ahead in life is to become "white."

    [src](https://agoodmovietowatch.com/wp-content/uploads/sorry-to-bother-you-still-2_26894346199_o-h_2018-e1540482547479.jpg)

This incorporates the main character "Cassius" (Lakeith Stanfield) dressing like a nerd, and basically abandoning and selling out everything about himself that is "black." It's funny for a little bit but this is kind of a tired aspect of comedy that has been kind of overdone over the years and it was amusing for a bit but seriously, almost every single black comedian has done this schtick before and I dunno, I guess as a white person I kind of get tired of being represented on screen as being a master race that is constantly suppressing poor, innocent, people of color.

Cassius is working for a telemarketing call center when he gets told by his cubical neighbor that if he wants to get ahead, he is going to have to adopt a whiter approach on the phone.

    images.jpg src

This is funny for a bit but then becomes what basically the entire movie is about and well, the overdubbing isn't really done very well. It isn't actually Lakeith Stanfield adapting a "white" voice but is David Cross doing all of the voiceover for him. It clearly isn't Cassius doing the talking. Perhaps this was intentional on the part of the director and I don't pretend to be an authority on these sorts of things but I feel as though it would have been funnier if Lakeith had simply learned how to do a "white voice" on his own rather than having it overdubbed by David Cross. Cross' voice is extremely recognizable since he has done a bunch of animated films lately... the only confusion I had was whether or not it was him or Patton Oswalt talking because they sound almost identical.

There are some important aspects of this film that I think are kind of spot on about society and more specifically the United States that appear in this film such as mass media being manipulated in a way to make evil corporations appear like saviors and convince regular people to work against their own best interests and also shows how "influencers" who do things that are completely stupid end up becoming very very famous and powerful because of it. Think about massive influencers like Jake Paul and his brother Logan before him - they had / have millions of followers and what do they do exactly other than act like fools?

    Should I watch it?

Overall this movie is entertaining enough to watch from start to finish without needing to use your phone as a distraction to get you through it and at least for me this is a good sign for movies these days. I do find the "white people bad!" imagery and suggestions to be annoying but if you can get past that and just realize that this is just what Hollywood does these days then I think basically anyone will enjoy this. The reason why I think it is wrong for them to do this is because I tend to look at things like this and suggest "if they reversed the races it would be considered horrible" and if you can say that, it's probably still racist. But that isn't the world we live in now and you are just going to have to let that slide because me suggesting that it is racist, would probably be considered a racist statement on my part by the SJW mobs out there.

Parts of the film irritated me because of this but overall it is definitely worth seeing because it is inventive and different. It doesn't surprise me at all that since this is not a cookie-cutter copy of every other comedy that it didn't even get widespread release let alone become a box-office smash.

  3. Sorry to Bother You - "If your beautiful perversions don’t shut the fuck up, I will turn you all into glue!"@dedicatedguy2140d

    image.png

I have had this movie on my to-watch list for quite some time but I have never decided to watch it until now. Have in mind this is a weird one, not as crazy as for example Doom Patrol, but it has some moments that will leave you totally puzzled. The writers must have been doing drugs or something like that when thinking about certain scenes.

The story is about a young black guy who is trying to find a job. Right in the beginning, in the scene when he is being interviewed every viewer will realize this is a movie mainly about comedy, even though it has a little bit of fantasy and scifi in it as well.

So the job this guy is applying for is a telemarketer job, and the place of work is actually a very special one. The way to achieve success in this job is quite funny, it is the type of funny solution you would hear from Chris Rock, but not everything is funny and good because this company also has a dark secret.

    image.png

Once the dark secret is discovered, the plot will slowly turn into a lite version of madness. There is a lot of dark humor throughout the film but this is something I enjoy, especially because not many movies have this sort of humor.

The performances from the cast were all good, there are at least 3 members of the cast who are popular and everyone did their job well. The best part of the film, however, isn't the performances but the WTF plot, including the ending.

If you are looking for a crazy and original movie that doesn't take itself too seriously then I recommend you to watch Sorry to Bother You. It has several funny scenes and a twist that is hard to describe but it is entertaining nonetheless.

    image.png

    The best

    • Crazy in a good way for the most part and original.
    • Good comedy in some scenes.

    The worst

    • The scifi twist might ruin the movie for many, it is a similar type of weird ideas that I saw in Doom Patrol season 1, but not as extreme of course because this movie isn't about superheroes.

  4. Sorry to Bother You… With This Review of a Terrible Movie.@hanshotfirst2707d

As 2018 wound down, I wanted to put together my favorite movies of the year post. Because I wanted to make sure not to miss any of the best films, I took a look at some of the top movie lists in order to determine if there were any I needed to see before I write my own.

I don't think I will be doing that ever again. I should trust myself. If I haven't seen one of the movies on these other lists, there is a reason. Last year, these lists tricked me into wasting two and one half hours of my life watching what should have been a 42 minute Twilight Zone episode titled The Shape of Water.

This year's utter waste of time was Sorry to Bother You.

*I'm sorry you bothered me too.*

Sorry to Bother You made many best movie lists including: The New York Times, Vox, Thrillist, and Rotten Tomatoes. I have no idea why.

After seeing the name pop up on so many lists, I decided to do a little research. Here is the description from Rotten Tomatoes

"In an alternate present-day version of Oakland, black telemarketer Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) discovers a magical key to professional success, which propels him into a macabre universe of "powercalling" that leads to material glory. But the upswing in Cassius' career raises serious red flags with his girlfriend Detroit (Tessa Thompson), a performance artist and minimum-wage striver who's secretly part of a Banksy-style activist collective. As his friends and co-workers organize in protest of corporate oppression, Cassius falls under the spell of his company's cocaine-snorting CEO Steve Lift (Armie Hammer), who offers him a salary beyond his wildest dreams."

That actually sounds pretty cool. It's an independent film with some good actors in a clever story. Ok. Let me dig a little deeper.

Here is what the "Critics Consensus" was:

Fearlessly ambitious, scathingly funny, and thoroughly original, Sorry to Bother You loudly heralds the arrival of a fresh filmmaking talent in writer-director Boots Riley.

Now we are talking. Original and "scathingly funny". Cool.

Plus it is listed as "comedy, science fiction and fantasy".

    Great! I'm in!

I decided to watch it on Hulu while running on my treadmill.

Thanks to those incredibly positive comments, I went into this with a great attitude. I wanted to love it. As a result, for the first 30 minutes I found myself smiling and thinking, "This is pretty clever". Then I got tired and decided to pause and resume it later.

When I resumed and watched the next 30 minutes, I was still feeling quite positive but found myself asking, "Where is this going? When does the originality kick in? Did I miss the funny parts?" Again I paused due to fatigue.

But this fatigue was not caused by my running. It was the movie. I was so bored that it did not take my mind off of exercising.

After I finally finished the last 30 minute segment, I was quite thankful that I had been exercising while watching this nonsense. Otherwise, it would have been a complete waste of my time.

*I think I would have rather spent my 90 minutes speaking to an actual telemarketer instead of watching this movie.*

Sorry to Bother You is the type of movie I detest. It is a movie that other people tell you that you are supposed to like. If you don't like it, it is because you "don't get it."

    False.

    Believe me I get it.

Corporations are bad. People are racist. The economic system of the "haves" and the "have nots" is evil. We are all cattle giving up our freedom and being worked to death in order to chase material possessions. Artists should be valued. Social media is destroying the world...

Yeah I get it... because I have seen that 1000 times before... and 999 were better than this!

Don't get me wrong, it is not the politics that annoyed me. I knew what I was getting into after reading the description. But it was so cliche and forced. For example, I am sure that I was supposed to be very impressed by the female lead's use of giant earnings to make political statements... but it was just silly. Instead of inspiring me or making me think, they made me roll my eyes.

Another problem is how many points the movie was trying to hit me over the head with. If they had stuck to one or two messages, perhaps it would not have felt so artificial. It honestly felt like the writer (rapper Boots Riley) sat down and said, "Let's see. I really can't stand these 97 issues. I'm going to make a movie that 'satirizes' all 97."

Unfortunately, by doing that, it comes across like an immature teenager who simply hates everything in life and therefore none of their complaints or criticisms can be taken seriously.

*Oh you look like a reliable source to give social commentary.*

Although the messages contained some truth, they were so cliche. If anyone was enlightened about social injustice after watching this movie, I think that just means they have not been paying attention to the real world for the past 4000 years or so.

So the message was a dud. But what about that "scathingly funny" humor and the science fiction aspect? I may have laughed a couple of times during the first 30 minutes... but I honestly don't remember. As far as the science fiction, that part was laughable... but not intentionally.

The entire movie reminded me of a very cheesy Tales From The Dark Side episode from the 1980s. I chose that analogy quite carefully. The Shape of Water should have been a Twilight Zone episode because it was at least original and thoughtful (sadly it was also 3 times too long and really boring). Tales From The Dark Side episodes were nowhere near as deep. Neither is Sorry to Bother You. But it sure was pretending to be.

Believe it or not, I really did want to like this movie. The cast was actually quite good. I especially liked Tessa Thompson and Jermaine Fowler. Sadly, their performances were wasted.

*The cast was definitely not the problem.*

This movie seems to have been made for one purpose: for hipsters to sit around and talk about how deep the messages were and what a scathing satire of modern society it is.

It's not. It is superficial and silly.

I can only imagine how many hours of conversation will center around the brilliance of the main character's name: Cassius Green.

    Get it?

    "Cash" "Is" "Green"

    Wow.

    Amazing.

I'm sorry to bother you with this wall of text.

I should have just told you to treat this film like you would a telemarketer.

    Click.
