Southpaw is one of these movies that, despite appearing on the Netflix homepage countless times, I always decided to ignore... The reason? Seeing its poster and reading its synopsis I couldn't help but feel that it was extremely generic, just another boxing film from the crowd.

    MV5BMjI1MTcwODk0MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTgwMDM5NTE@.V1.jpg Source

The funny thing about the whole thing is that although this is true, and there is nothing particularly notable about the direction, the script or the general style of Southpaw, it is a film that is elevated to another level thanks to the brilliant performance of Jake Gyllenhaal and everyone around him.

See, directed by Antoine Fuqua in Southpaw we follow the story of a young boxing fighter named Billy Hope who grew up in an orphanage and achieved glory thanks to the unconditional support of his wife Maureen (played by Rachel McAdams) and his daughter Leila Hope.

After a confrontation with another boxer after leaving a charity event, one of his security guards accidentally shoots Maureen, which ends up leading Billy to fall into a self-destructive spiral.

    Screenshot_2024-01-08-12-52-25-167_org.videolan.vlc.jpg

You could already guess the rest of the story yourself: the young boxer must move forward despite the difficulties, fight against his ghosts from the past and grow up as a better man, just as his late wife would have wanted.

The true appeal of Southpaw lies not so much in the plot points that I just mentioned, but in the rawness that all its characters have to navigate between it, starting with the undeniable chemistry between Billy and his wife (before dying) as well as the his desperate efforts to recover his damaged relationship with his young daughter.

Gyllenhaal immerses himself in a character who has the imposing physique of a killing machine, but who on the inside is foolish, vulnerable and impulsive like a little child.

That is a fascinating contrast with which it is easy to empathize, and that far from annoying the viewer with their irrational decisions ends up generating a quite powerful bond, where we suffer their defeats and celebrate their victories (in and out of the ring).

    Screenshot_2024-01-08-12-27-46-541_org.videolan.vlc.jpg

Beyond this there is not much to say, a simple and effective film with a very solid message, which manages to differentiate itself above the others of the same genre.

    [Source](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/307081-southpaw?language=en-US)

    [Source](https://nypost.com/2015/07/23/jake-gyllenhaals-southpaw-is-a-stale-cliche-filled-fight/)

    [Source](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3170389/Jake-Gyllenhaal-looks-adoringly-Rachel-McAdam-s-onscreen-daughter-trio-promote-film-Southpaw.html)
    [Source](https://www.slashfilm.com/new-southpaw-trailer/)
    # # Final.

  3. [Films Critics] Southpaw@jsxchemistry2435d

Dramatic films that use sports storylines are always going to have a special place in me as a spectator because I really like that relationship between sport and drama that is usually shown in films. In fact, many of my favorite movies derive from sports themes to build an atmosphere that entertains me, and without hesitation one of those movies that comes to mind when I think of that connection between drama and sport is Southpaw; an almost perfect intense drama that shows the emotion of a man who loses everything and will have to work very hard to get back on his feet.

    [Source](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/307081-southpaw?language=en-US)
    # # Going deeper into story. # Regularly when we get into sports movies and especially those that have to do with boxing, the stories basically focus on the start of the boxers on their way to greatness and to becoming the best exponents of the sport through countless challenges and memorable moments. However this movie is different here we first see the boxer at the top, with a perfect life and a constant fame, a life that is taken away from him or rather that he himself collapses from a traumatic and unexpected event that takes away from him the woman he loved so much, the woman who supported him from the beginning and who meant everything to him, basically in the first bars of the movie we see how a man who had everything collapses after losing the woman who helped him become what he is. As you can imagine from that traumatic moment is when the real climax of the film begins because we will see how this man goes from being the best boxer to become a lost man who seems to have lost his soul, a man who becomes a shadow and in addition to losing his fame and money also loses his daughter as a result of his bad decisions, something that undoubtedly makes a big difference in this film because we can see all the road that our protagonist will have to travel to recover his reign in boxing and also how he will have to rebuild his life to recover his daughter.

What makes this movie something entertaining and great is undoubtedly the whole atmosphere of intensity, emotion and melancholy that is built with the passing of the minutes, since little by little we will be witnesses of really hard moments in Billy's life, moments that make him lose hope and courage to see how all his life went to the f&%ck, but nevertheless he is forced to overcome if he wants to be reunited with his daughter, a girl who constantly demands more of him, who makes him want and be better, a girl who takes the role that her mother left by becoming the new cornerstone of a soulless man.

The development of the story is not wasted everything is aimed at achieving epic scenes that will raise the pace of the film making it totally fascinating.

    # # The Hope # One of the strongest points of the film is undoubtedly Jake Gyllenhaal who manages to become a lost man, a man who having everything manages to lose more than he had, a man who seems to have lost his soul but with work and hope manages to recover a little of the life he had before. The way in which Jake Gyllenhaal evolved during the film into a more sensible man and focused on what is really important in life is incredible because it offers us different nuances that constantly interact in the real life of boxers, the actor gets us to feel sorry for him, we relate to his ongoing psychological struggle and above all that we want him to recover and triumph again so that he can reunite with his daughter. Without a doubt, this film gave me one of the most epic and emotional scenes that I have seen through that long-awaited and dreamed reunion of a father with his daughter after so many problems and especially after having fought so hard to be happy again.

This is one of those interpretations that, like Sylvester Stallone's in Rocky, will remain engraved in my memory because of how well executed they were, interpretations that managed to shake my emotions through great moments full of feeling and with an intensity characteristic of sports films. A film that has nothing to envy to other more recognized films, because it is through its very real characters that it manages to stand out the same or more than other similar ones.

    [Source](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjIu5bF3cXlAhVCrlkKHUaIBhkQjhx6BAgBEAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.slashfilm.com%2Fnew-southpaw-trailer%2F&psig=AOvVaw073N1ZFKg0N2orjVINOLau&ust=1572584585166896)
    # # Final Thoughts # For me this is a film that deserves to be seen again and again because of how well done it is, we hardly see failures or meaningless moments, the whole plot develops with a rhythm that never loses its intensity even when the scenes are simpler or when the characters are far from the ring, and that precisely makes it great because besides the fights this film stands out for the depth of its plot and its characters. Here we will not have something superficial done to raise money, but something done with care and seeking to give the affection that deserve their characters so that they can stand out throughout the plot.

No doubt this film is in my top, because it does not have any aspect that I do not like, all the assembling and development of the story seemed to me brilliant and extremely entertaining.

    My Score: 8,1/10

Fortunately, originality has never been a requirement for us to like something, and precisely that was my case with this film, a story that combines the typical cliche of sports overcoming with a very well created family drama.

    [Source](https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/307081-southpaw?language=en-US)
    # # The Fall of a Champion. # When it comes to sports stories we find premises that are almost always the same, marginalized or potential people struggling to reach the top, however in this film the chronology of this premise changes, and is that here the protagonist is already at the top of his profession. A boxing champion who has everything, money, family, friends, love, but unexpectedly loses everything after his wife is killed during a hotel fight.

The important thing is to know that after the death of his wife, our protagonist falls completely, his dependence and love for a woman lead him down a rough and stormy road where he begins to make bad decisions; decisions that lead to an inclement abyss. The once world boxing champion loses his title, his money, and his daughter.

    [Source](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwi_--Wb4ZvlAhUOR6wKHZ1EBn8Qjhx6BAgBEAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fnypost.com%2F2015%2F07%2F23%2Fjake-gyllenhaals-southpaw-is-a-stale-cliche-filled-fight%2F&psig=AOvVaw3PV_eVr5dDXg76n6ifQ_7P&ust=1571142690123453)
    # However from those facts is when the film really begins because we will see the journey of rediscovery and healing that a broken man will have to do to recover part of what he lost by returning to his beginning and concentrate on a new motivation ... to recover his daughter.

As I said this is not a film that has a super original story, here the original is the way the makers choose to develop the facts, the film changes the usual chronology of this type of film concentrating on the characters, their problems and their difficulties. The plot manages to convey wonderfully the healing journey of a broken man, showing us every step, every path and every obstacle in his new life. Everything is combined to form an excellent plot rhythm where we feel part of the life of the boxer wishing that he can meet his daughter again.

    # # Father & Daughter. # This is a movie that despite dealing with a fallen boxer does not focus on that, the main focus of the movie is a relationship father and daughter that is broken. Both have been separated and our protagonist has no idea how to deal with everything that is happening to him, does not know what to do or how to get his daughter back. The chemistry between Jake Gyllenhaal and Oona Laurence is magnificent, both are compenetrating delivering extremely emotional and heartbreaking scenes that remind us of the suffering, motivation and helplessness of two people who cannot be together. #
    [Source](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiRuq2M5ZvlAhUInq0KHSxOD_AQjhx6BAgBEAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailymail.co.uk%2Ftvshowbiz%2Farticle-3170389%2FJake-Gyllenhaal-looks-adoringly-Rachel-McAdam-s-onscreen-daughter-trio-promote-film-Southpaw.html&psig=AOvVaw3PV_eVr5dDXg76n6ifQ_7P&ust=1571142690123453)
    # Oona Laurence plays the boxer's daughter in a splendid way, transmitting a lively empathy, where we can feel the suffering of a little girl who cannot be with her father, a little girl who shouts at him, mistreats him and presses him constantly so that he makes an effort and gets up from the lethargy that his life has become. On the other hand Jake Gyllenhaal continues to do what he is so easily done lately, characterize and deliver perfect performances. The actor is completely transformed into a man who is emotionally broken because he has lost everything, a man who wanders looking for how to recover, transmitting pain, emptiness and suffering in every scene Jake Gyllenhaal gets us to support and feel sorry for him. #
    [Source](https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiequ2I5ZvlAhUQKKwKHQ4FAbkQjhx6BAgBEAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.slashfilm.com%2Fnew-southpaw-trailer%2F&psig=AOvVaw3PV_eVr5dDXg76n6ifQ_7P&ust=1571142690123453)
    # # Last Words # An extremely entertaining and emotional film that shows us the hard road to success, a road that does not always give the rewards it promises and can often lead to unexpected things. A perfectly developed story that manages to trap us in the drama father/daughter very fast by all the emotion and suffering that both actors manage to deliver, creating really intense scenes that make us feel very sorry for the situations that both have to deal with.

Great movie that using a little original story manages to create a fantastic and highly enjoyable atmosphere.
