  1. 'Spectre' by Sam Mendes Review: It could have been better@namiks1189d

When I was just entering my teens, I would stay up late at night on a Friday and catch the films that would air on television. I had access to four channels and have to constantly move around the aerial in order to find the perfect spot to catch the signal. Often enough, during the night the BBC would air the older James Bond films. This become almost a tradition for me to catch these films, watching them from my small, boxed television that was in my room. For many, I'm sure they'd say there's only one real James Bond to them. As the many actors and ways they told the stories came and went with time. Each one offering something different to the franchise. To ask someone who James Bond is to them is like asking a person their favourite type of food: everyone has a different reason for their answer.

Growing up and watching these films late at night, James Bond was never a specific actor to me. The character didn't mean anything specific other than a symbol of the rare British blockbuster. A symbol of British tradition and the supposed classy nature of British culture. Though as the years went on, and the franchise died off, only to get its reboot featuring Daniel Craig, it certainly took on a different appeal. Trying to modernise and appeal to the new era of film and the audiences that attend the cinema. Moving on from the more British tropes and instead focusing on reaching the widest possible demographic. This was Bond for the new era, much of the same things as before, but very much many things new. These newer entries have been the ones that appeal to me the least, having lost me rather early on, void of the typical soul that was found with the more cartoonish elements of the original runs.

Though yesterday I decided to watch Spectre, in attempt to catch up with the Daniel Craig era of James Bond and see how it ended up. I had seen a lot of controversy over who would replace him, as well as how James Bond should be seen in the era of insanity in which all things masculine are targeted and shut down. Naturally this sets the character up for failure. My hopes were low, though I think this film came out just in time to have survived that insanity; something I'm sure the more recent film did not.

A large problem of the modern James Bond films is their dependence on a very established structure in terms of the narrative. A structure that seems incredibly overdone and uninteresting, ultimately very much expected. James Bond is found in some random location, a bit of a fight takes place, he's threatened back in London for the dangerous actions and neglect. Following this he goes through his friends that handle the gadgets and we see the many told that 007 is to surround himself with later on in the film, as various events call for their use. Sprinkle in some women and moments of explosions and you've got yourself a relatively simple film. Other films have since followed and relied on a similar structure: John Wick and The Fast & Furious films come to mind. Though the Bond films seem to never really attempt to increase the stakes, instead relying more on the relatively tame villains and agenda their have to hold things together. The older films had their fair share of reliance on the structure and action, but had a very cartoonish manner of showing the villains. I can't say I've seen that so far with these newer entries.

And Spectre shows an aging James Bond, one that is witnessing the change of an era himself. A world where he is no longer needed as countries push into the very dystopian and technologically advanced methods of mass surveillance. The film takes place at the very cusp of this change as various organisations attempt to take control of the power and shift in narrative, gaining power over all by causing various acts of terrorism around the world, encouraging nations to accept these organisations in. While the aging James Bond now witnessing the changes of technology and having to come to terms with his own mortality, and career coming to an end on borrowed time is an interesting idea, much of the film focuses instead on the organisations, somewhat not making full sense and being a beat weak. I did like the idea that James Bond would be discovering that there is a life beyond the spy life, and that it might be a genuine option to pursue going forward as his abilities decrease with age, as do his requirements from the government. And the film does explore this slightly over the film with the romance option that appears. 007 sees the conflicting realisation that there is a world in which he can be happy, but the chaotic, always travelling action and spy life is something that seems engraved within, that he can't seem to escape. Almost longing for.

That said, given this is a more franchised film and one coming up to the conclusion of this era of James Bond, it felt a bit thin. Most likely as it serves as the setup for the actual sending off for the character. This means the narrative itself isn't anything major as well, instead thrown together to give justification for the film to existence and be that bridge to the end. What doesn't help the film is that it suffers at the hands of the blockbuster runtime. Over two hours in length and certainly lingering on for far too long, when much of the film just isn't that necessary. Around the halfway mark I had this assumption that it would be coming to an end soon, expecting the conclusion; but I noticed it was in fact that halfway mark with somehow over an hour left of story to push. It did bore me a little as it continued on, just roaming back and forth between these already established ideas without really doing much more with them. I wouldn't say it was bad, but just a bit boring.

This is mostly due to the fact that the most intense action sequence takes place at the start of the film, and the rest sort of waddles on attempting to tell the story of the spectre organisation and while showing James Bond a glimpse at love. There are other action sequences of course throughout, but are mostly through vehicles and don't have a lot of choreography that makes them interesting. The same applies to the directing and cinematography. Though the lighting in the film is pretty, often low light, quite soft and with plenty of shadows. But it just isn't that interesting. Very typical of blockbuster films that make sure things are visually pleasing, but don't go beyond with the camera movements given the film aims to please the widest possible demographic. Again much of this is also due to the fact that this film serves as the bridge that leads to the conclusion of the Daniel Craig era of 007, and the film just has no reason to be anything more than that.

Though sprinkled throughout is some of the James Bond appeal. The music around certain scenes. Moments of action and slight comedy as Bond pulls off some intense movement that seems a bit farfetched. But that's about it, unfortunately. I wouldn't say the film was bad, I still managed to enjoy it, just that it didn't feel all that inspired. For me, the main appeal was actually the performance by Ralph Fiennes. But ultimately, if anything, all it did was make me want to watch the older films, given it has been a very long time since I last did!

  2. Spectre (2015) [ENG | ESP]: James Bond retirement | el retiro de James Bond@cristiancaicedo1506d

Directed by Sam Mendes Dirigida por Sam Mendes

A few days after seeing Skyfall, I visited this movie on the Amazon Prime Video platform, the penultimate stop on my journey through the adventures of Daniel Craig as James Bond. Having defeated Le Chiffre, Dominic and Silva and prevented the destruction of MI6, what more adventures could the iconic 007 agent have left?

Impetuous and rebellious by nature, James Bond is dedicated to a secret mission, of which not even his superior is aware, that takes him to Mexico D.F. in the middle of Día de los Muertos and then to Rome, where he meets Lucía Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful widow of an infamous criminal connected to an organization larger and more powerful than he could ever imagine. Using his wits, Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and discovers the existence of a sinister organization known as Specter whose head appears to be someone from Bond's personal past, not an ex-agent as in the case of Silva in Skyfall, but a story much more personal. Meanwhile, in London, the new director of the Center for National Security questions Bond's actions and questions the importance of MI6 and specifically the 007 program, headed by M, (Ralph Fiennes) implying that the age of the spies has been left behind: the program must disappear.

Following the clues and connecting the dots, James reaches a relevant character from the first films of the saga, Mr. White, who, before committing suicide, asks him to look for and protect his daughter Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), because she may have the key to reaching the Specter organization and precisely because of that his life is in danger.

Flashy chases, explosions, countdowns, jumping from collapsing buildings, racing in fast cars, meetings in majestic palaces, exotic locations, beautiful women, powerful villains... once again, the film mix has the common ingredients of the genre and the saga, achieving an entertaining film. But with some flaws. The first one, I think, was trying to make too many connections with the previous three movies. The identity of Franz Oberhauser, the villain, and his connection to Bond, initially shown through a photograph that survived the fire in Bond's childhood home, already connects this film with Skyfall and Mr. White's appearance with Casino Royale and Quantum, but to have shown that Le Chiffre, Dominic and Silva, all the previous villains, were part of the same organization with an unimaginable scope, I think that is going too far.

Then there is the main villain. Christoph Waltz is a top actor and he plays a very convincing villain, but I didn't find the character interesting enough to be the head of an organization as huge as Spectre. I did like the character of Dr. Madeleine Swann. Since Vesper Lynd (Eva Green in Casino Royale) no other Bond girl had been a co-star. All (or almost) fell into the arms of James and on the battlefield, being killed too soon to get to know them a little better. Magnetic and beautiful, they were damsels in distress serving the interests of Bond and MI6, providing information or being bridges between the agent and the villains. Although in this case, the relationship begins under the same conditions, little by little, Madeleine's character is revealed, a woman stronger than her beauty suggests, but also with a hidden tenderness behind that mask of distance. Not surprisingly, James falls in love with her.

This return to love (he has not loved such a woman since Vesper) and the final scene imply that it is the end of James Bond as agent 007. Order has been restored in the world, he wants to be by Madeleine's side and stop aside that life of persecution, crimes and secret organizations and the girl seems to be one more reason for it. Back in 2015 when the movie was released, it looked like that, but it was the 24th movie in the entire franchise. Being one of that round number (25), would they leave it like that? Would they bring another actor to continue with Bond? Those and others were the doubts for years, until the premiere in 2021 of No time to die, a review that I will post soon. Did you like Spectre? Do you think it's better than Skyfall? what is your favorite James Bond movie? I read you in the comments.

(Spectre, 2015)@panza2501d

  4. An Amusing Comparison Between Understanding Reality And Mind-Controlled Perception While Watching A Movie - SPECTRE@steeminganarchy3061d

A fun look at what an anarchist might consciously see in the James Bond film and what a statist might subconsciously absorb.

Let’s start with some ideas and themes that an anarchist most likely can consciously see in this film, while statists more than likely will subconsciously absorb them.  In this scenario, the anarchist is not under mind control, while the statist is.

Themes, concepts, and ideas in James Bond Films….

    Authoritarianism

    “Government” as the “good guy”

The only “good guys” with guns are government agents, while the only other people with guns are “bad guys”

Hero worship – Needing some super-human figure to save the day.  This contributes to many people feeling that they are inadequate to cause change in the world.  Most people are small and powerless, in other words.

    Moral Relativism

Totalitarian Surveillance is necessary for safety

Of course, all of these ideas play right into the hands of the dark occult ruling class and are contrary to individual liberty based on Natural Law.

When these ideas are subconsciously absorbed and believed to be true (this is what statists do), the actions that they catalyze increase slavery and decrease liberty.

Now let’s move onto specific characters and organizations…..

    James Bond

    Anarchist might see….

No matter how good 007’s intentions might be, he is still a mind-controlled order-following pawn.  Works for the terrorist organization known as MI6.  He is funded by extortion (taxation).

A loose comparison in the real world might be a mix of someone like Kim Philby

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Philby

And someone who took part in

    The Phoenix Program

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Program

    OR

    Operation Gladio

    https://www.corbettreport.com/an-introduction-to-gladio-b/

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Gladio

    Statist might see….

A fantastic hero who hunts down villains and drives cool cars.  He has special permission to kill people, which most people don’t.  Helps keep people safe from terrorists!

    The character “M”

    Anarchist……

An authoritarian, obviously immoral, who doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong.  Works for the criminal government organization known as MI6.  Total ignorance of Natural Law and liberty.

A real life comparison would be the actual head of MI6 or the CIA.

    Statist….

Due to ignorance of Natural Law, a statist might admire M for the so-called defense of democracy and freedom and the status that comes with such a high rank at MI6.

The character Ernst Stavro Blofeld – Head of SPECTRE Organization

    Anarchist….

A dark occult psychopath pulling strings from the shadows.  While morally culpable to a certain extent for the plans he puts into motion, he ultimately holds less moral culpability than the actual foot soldiers who follow his orders and take violent actions.

A real life, loosely based comparison might be someone along the lines of George Soros.

    http://21stcenturywire.com/2015/10/31/crisis-by-design-hungarian-pm-reveals-social-engineering-role-of-george-soros-in-eu-refugee-run/

    https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-07-08/how-george-soros-singlehandedly-created-european-refugee-crisis-and-why

    https://www.corbettreport.com/episode-113-meet-george-soros/

    Statist….

A terrible villain! Good thing guys like that don’t exist in real life.  Nobody could be that evil! That's why I need government to protect me!

    The Organization “SPECTRE”

     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPECTRE

    Anarchist…..

While not a tangible organization, it would be something more like a loose connection of individuals, who share common interests and objectives.  These individuals cooperate in order to achieve their interests.

These individuals are all overtly criminal psychopaths at worst and mind-controlled order-following dupes at best.

They might be from the so-called underworld, corporate world, and government.  Main objective for those at the top is social control.  Main objective for the foot soldiers at bottom is profit.

A real life example of a criminal enterprise similar to ones perpetrated by SPECTRE would be something like two key historical events from the 1980s.

The Iran-Contra criminal enterprise and the covert war in Afghanistan.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran%E2%80%93Contra_affair

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Cyclone

With a bank like BCCI used as a money laundering/financial source for such enterprises.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_Credit_and_Commerce_International

With huge sums of cash coming into BCCI from various CIA-connected drug runners like Barry Seal

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Seal

Along with certain individuals from intelligence agencies.  For example:

    William Casey, Oliver North

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_J._Casey

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_North

And the mind-controlled order-following muscle actually on the ground in Afghanistan, guys like Michael G. Vickers and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulbuddin_Hekmatyar

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_G._Vickers

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/04/afghan-warlord-gulbuddin-hekmatyar-returns-kabul-20-years-call-peace

Add all that up and you get an informal network of individuals with the motivations and assets to create one huge, global, murderous, plundering cabal.  Of course, the above is an extremely over simplified example, but you can see how these things work from its most basic level.

What a statist might see regarding SPECTRE….

Wow, now that’s a crazy, criminal conspiracy! Glad that stuff never happens in real life! Glad the good guys like the CIA and MI6 are there to protect me!

One last thing of note, though a bit off topic.

An interesting research tool I’ve used for the past few years is

    http://historycommons.org/

This is a very detailed resource with tons of searchable articles about historical entities.  For example, if you go to http://historycommons.org/ and type in their search box “BCCI”, you will be astounded at what you’ll find.

Thanks for your time and attention!

    Just say "NO" to slavery!
