I only recently realized that I hadn’t talked about this film and I wonder why. Action comedies are one of my favourite genres and I do not like to miss an opportunity to talk about films I have enjoyed in that genre, especially when said films feature actors who are more or less veterans in the game.

    Spy (2015)

40-year-old Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is a CIA employee who merely sits at her desk and assists her partner who is field agent, Bradley Fine. Susan has never served in the field but volunteers to participate in this new mission which her boss reluctantly agrees to. With the help of her best friend and colleague Nancy, who provides her with remote intelligence, Susan goes on a journey to Paris.

On her arrival there, she meets Aldo, a cheerful and lustful Italian who persistently and repeatedly chases after her. From there on are a series of actions that Susan faces despite her inexperience, like saving someone from an assassination attempt, surviving a knife fight, and shooting to kill for the first time in her career. She encounters betrayal, double-crossing, and gross underestimation of her abilities, but it is up to former desk worker now CIA field agent Susan to prove that there's more to her than meets the eye.

I don’t think I’ve seen any film of Melissa McCarthy that I did not enjoy. It doesn’t matter if she’s the stereotypical clown in most of her films, she’s a natural and exudes a unique aura that I just find endearing. Comedy is not just a script you’re going to act if you don’t have the knack for it. Thankfully, Melissa has it in spades, and the fact that she was the protagonist crystallized the entire movie-watching experience for me.

I loved the action as well. Of course, everything is mostly comic which lessens to a great degree the severity of the fights and all of that, but genuinely, that is my forte, in the sense that I enjoy action films like that. There’s a tendency to overdo the comedy so much so that the action now appears silly, but thankfully, this was not the case. Jason Statham can never go wrong in my eyes as far as action films are concerned, so his presence there was pretty spot-on to balance the comedic figure that is Melissa.

I wouldn’t want to say too much although I genuinely feel that you’re missing out on a cinematic masterpiece if you haven’t seen this film production yet. I cannot believe that it has been ten years already since it was released. It certainly doesn’t feel that long. People tend to gravitate towards more serious productions these days but frankly speaking, films like these in this dispensation of life are what we need now. Something fun and lighthearted but still impactful at the same time. Again, a truly delightful piece. Hope you enjoy!

Hello friends, I'm here with interesting movie title Spy and I would like to share you with here.

The movie is about desk-bound CIA analyst Susan Cooper transforms into a field agent when she volunteers to infiltrate an arms deal and stop a global catastrophe with hilarious consequences.

It begins when Susan Cooper is a 40-year-old, single, desk-bound CIA employee who remotely assists her partner, field agent Bradley Fine, on a mission.

Fine accidentally kills arms dealer Tihomir Boyanov, without learning the location of a suitcase nuke from him.

Susan discovers Boyanov's daughter Rayna has contacted terrorist middleman Sergio De Luca, so Fine infiltrates her home.

Meanwhile, She appears to shoot him dead, while Susan watches helplessly online. Rayna then reveals she knows the identities of the agency's field agents, including Rick Ford and Karen Walker.

Susan, who is an agent but has never served in the field so is unknown, volunteers to track Rayna.

When her boss Elaine Crocker reluctantly agrees, the ultra-macho Ford objects due to her inexperience, so quits in protest.

With her best friend and colleague Nancy providing remote intelligence, Susan goes to Paris.

A rogue Ford shows up, insisting she will fail. Susan discovers De Luca's office has been burned down, but finds a photo of a man standing next to the fire. Ford appears, argues with Susan again and leaves.

Susan sees the man from the photo switch Ford's backpack with one containing a bomb. She warns Ford in-time, prompting him to throw it into the Seine, interrupting the nearby Verka Serduchka concert.

Pursuing the man, she accidentally kills him during the ensuing fight. Susan finds proof that De Luca is going to Rome. Now more determined than ever, she is sent after him.

Susan's contact there is Aldo, a lustful Italian who repeatedly hits on her.

Following De Luca into a casino, Susan saves Rayna's life from an assassination attempt in which her drink was spiked with acid.

Rayna invites Susan into her inner circle, taking her by private jet to Budapest.

In mid-flight, the steward kills Rayna's crew, but Susan subdues him and takes control of the plane. Rayna believes her to be a CIA agent, but Susan convinces her she was hired by her father to protect her.

Nancy joins Susan in Budapest undercover. After being shot at, Susan pursues and catches the would-be assassin: Karen, who sold Rayna the agents' names. She tries to shoot Susan, but a sniper kills her first.

Susan, Nancy, and Aldo accompany Rayna to a party to meet Rayna's contact, Lia. Nancy creates a diversion, jumping on performer 50 Cent, so Susan can apprehend Lia, but Ford's inopportune intervention lets her escape.

Furthermore, Susan catches her and, during a brutal fight, is saved from death by Fine, who is revealed to have faked his murder and is Rayna's lover and associate.

Rayna imprisons Susan and Aldo, but Fine visits them, revealing he is gaining Rayna's trust to locate the nuke, and he was who killed Karen.

Susan and Aldo escape, and she follows Fine and Rayna to De Luca's mansion. There, she convinces them that the CIA has mistreated her, and she will do anything to protect Fine, as she loves him.

Terrorist Solsa Dudaev arrives, gives De Luca a suitcase full of diamonds, so Rayna produces the device. De Luca has Dudaev and his men killed, revealing his plan to resell the device, then prepares to shoot Rayna.

Ford arrives and unintentionally distracts him, allowing Susan to kill his men. De Luca escapes by helicopter with the device and the diamonds, but Susan grabs onto a landing skid.

Ford, not wanting her to mess things up, chases after and grabs onto her but falls into the lake. In the ensuing struggle, Susan throws the diamonds and the device into the lake below.

Find out what happened next as Susan throws the diamonds and the device into the lake below as it gets more interesting.

  3. Spy (2015) review - I always laugh watching this movie!@unbiasedwriter2425d

There are a couple of movies I am able to watch over and over again. It was true about Ace Ventura in the 90s, it can be said about Dumb and Dumber, and Spy from 2015 featuring Jude Law, Jason Statham, and Melissa McCarthy is the same thing.

It is quite interesting, that most of my readers have probably stopped reading the article already after hearing that I enjoy movies like Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura. Half of the population here on earth find those movies to be horrible and examples of terrible humor... but, then you have me - I simply laugh and have a wonderful day! The same is true when I watch Mr. Bean. And the movie Spy from 2015. Feel free to judge me, but I enjoy all of them!

    What makes Spy so special?

To be honest, not much! I guess the fact that some scenes in the movie is recorded in Budapest makes me like it more. But, Gemini Man was also recorded in Budapest and I didn't like it at all (and the same can be said about Die Hard 5), so recording a movie in Budapest doesn't serve as a guarantee of quality.

scene from budapest.jpg A scene from Budapest with the St. Stephen's Basilica in the background

But, there is something about Spy that makes it hilarious to me. Jason Statham is just super-stupid, and whenever he shows up, it makes me want to laugh. His language is super-ugly (not for those who cannot stand swearing in movies), but the way he speaks and brags about himself is just crazy.

Then you have Melissa McCarthy and her friend Miranda Hart who together make a winning team. Jude Law is a famous actor, but to me, he is kind of unnecessary in this movie, as Melissa and Jason make it such an enjoyable movie.

    What is Spy all about?

A global disaster is about to take place. The bad guys know the names of every single CIA operative, and they have even taken one of them captive. How can the CIA protect the world against a dangerous arms dealer when all the identities of their agents have been uncovered? They have to send one of their analysts, Melissa McCarthy. She isn't a typical field agent, but that is what makes it all the more fun and merry!

Jason Statham plays the role of another agent who believes he is the best agent in the world. He is convinced that he can solve all problems, but since his identity has been revealed, he is banned from this case. But, he has no intention of listening to his boss, so of course, he shows up to catch the bad guys as Melissa travels to Europe.

Another important character in the movie is Rose Byrne, who plays the role of the evil (and beautiful) Rayna Boyanov.

    Whey should you watch Spy?

Well, if you like crazy humor movies with special agents going undercover, then this is for you. It isn't s super expensive production, it isn't a movie packed with special qualities... but it has one quality I appreciate, good humor! In other words, if you are in the mood for such a movie, this is going to be great. But, if you don't laugh at the jokes and just find the first 15 minutes to be stupid, stop watching - the rest of the movie will be like a 2 hour suffering from you.

    What do the critics say?

Am I alone about my enthusiasm for this movie? Not entirely! At the IMDB, the movie has a 7/10 score based on more than 200,000 ratings. At Rotten Tomatoes, this movie has a 95% critics score (based on more than 200 critics), while the audience score is 78%. I have just got to say, those numbers are incredibly high, especially the critics' score.

Would you like to watch it? Currently, you can watch Spy on Netflix in Germany, Singapore, Switzerland, and Hong Kong (good for you @gooddream), and you can also find it in the Google Play Movies and in the Apple Store. In Hungary, the play it on different TV channels all the time, so that is also a good option!

Have you seen Spy? How did you like it? I would love to hear your thoughts!

  4. Insomniac Movie Marathon: Spy@rvgenaille2436d

I like Melissa McCarthy but I am not a fan of the improvised nature of some of her performances. I really want to like the new Ghostbusters and there is a lot to like about it- the original is not the sacred cow that it is often made out to be, it has a lot of problems too- but the noticeable improvised lines that are present in that one, along with many of her other films and, for that matter, a lot of the Seth Rogen oeuvre that makes it so grating as well, bring it down.

That problem is present in Spy as well but it is much more controlled and the movie is better off for it. Spy stars McCarthy as a CIA analyst who works behind a desk and "handles" a field agent, played by Jude Law. When Law goes down in the field, she volunteers to go into the field to save the world by taking down an arms dealer. She is competing with Jason Statham as a rogue agent who is convinced he can save the day and determined to show her up in every way. Rose Byrne is the bad guy in this one.

All of them are great, especially Statham who is parodying his persona as the tough guy and appears to be having the time of his life doing it. McCarthy is also great as the desk agent who is smarter then everyone she is working with or against. She is more tightly controlled here than in her other films and, like I said, when that happens, her performances are much stronger and the movies benefit from that.

This one is worth the watch, check it out.
