Bingo, Bingo!
Anora's victory at the last edition of the Oscar Awards gave me great satisfaction. It is a great recognition for independent cinema. Sean Baker's win as co-director also pleased me. Baker is a multi-faceted filmmaker, handling many areas of production, from writing scripts, directing, producing, editing, etc.
If I remember correctly, Starlet was my first exposure to Sean Baker's filmmaking. Although the film is from 2012, I saw it roughly between 2015 and 2016. I subsequently watched his subsequent productions and looked for the earlier ones, those were hard to find at the time. There are two of his older films that I have yet to see. Prince of Boradway and Four Letter Words.
Baker has a gift for capturing his stories in a very natural way. Bringing the viewer closer to his fictions is where he can make an exploration of our problems and the naturalness of the acting lends them credibility. Without much artifice, he has earned the title of chronicler of a side of America that most other productions do not show. Many of his characters are what in this country they call white trash. The poor, loser American, who seeks survival in the midst of abversities, but who suffers and is emotionally deprived like everyone else.
Starlet is a wonderful film. Its story is also simple. It is that simplicity that attracts me to Baker's films. In the everyday, in what can happen to an acquaintance, in the what and our somportamineto. I have seen it criticized for being too simple a story to be the best film, but it is in that simplicity that its charm lies.

Baker tiene un don para plasmar sus historias de una forma muy natural. Acercando al espectador a sus ficciones, es donde puede hacer una exploración de nuestros problemas y la naturalidad de la actuación les aporta credibilidad. Sin muchos artificios, se ha ganado el título de cronista de un lado de América que la mayoría de las demás producciones no muestran. Muchos de sus personajes son lo que en este país llaman basura blanca. El americano pobre, perdedor, que busca la supervivencia en medio de las abversidades, pero que sufre y tiene carencias emocionales como todo el mundo.
Starlet es una película maravillosa. Su historia también es sencilla. Es esa sencillez lo que me atrae de las películas de Baker. En lo cotidiano, en lo que le puede pasar a un conocido, en el qué y nuestro somportamineto. La he visto criticada por ser una historia demasiado simple para ser la mejor película, pero es en esa sencillez donde reside su encanto.
Starlet tells the story of Jane, a young woman in her twenties who works as a porn actress and rents a room in the home of Melissa and Mickey, who are also in the adult entertainment industry, but don't have much money. Jane meets an Acnian woman, Sadie, at a garage sale and buys a thermos from her. Inside that thermos is something that will cause Jane to have feelings of guilt and push her to get closer to this older, lonely, widowed woman who spends her time playing bingo.
With that beginning we enter into the friendship that is born between the two women of different generations, but that has something in common, and it is that something that the story captures beautifully. Loneliness and lack of affection. On the one hand Jane tries to succeed but struggles alone for it. She may have the company of Melissa and Mickey at home, but in reality she is alone, as her relationship with her mother is complicated. Sadie, on the other hand, is a very old woman, widowed many years ago and apparently has no one else. She spends her days playing bingo with other elderly people and has a very bad temper.
An almost impossible friendship that captivates us as the story unfolds. In this film Baker also takes us in an entertaining way between funny and dramatic situations. Paving the way to make the viewer fall in love and it is in the final act, where he throws us a punch in the stomach, closing the circle in a wonderful and touching way. The final revelation I was not expecting and gives more sustenance to the story.
One scene shows Sadie's desperation, when Starlet, the name of Jane's dog and the title of the film, goes astray. Sadie's reaction at the end of that scene may not be instantly understood. But when the film ends, it all makes sense. That's the wonderful thing about this filmmaker, he manages to move us from the simple and what he tells us are very human situations. Too bad Dee Hemingway doesn't have a longer and more successful career, here she gives a lovely and beautiful performance. Bedseka Jhonson was her first film, she was in her eighties when it was shot and died a year after its release.
I don't know if it will be on any streaming service. You should look for it in your country. Maybe with Baker's current Oscar success, his film may be available on some platform.

Starlet cuenta la historia de Jane, una joven veinteañera que trabaja como actriz porno y alquila una habitación en casa de Melissa y Mickey, que también se dedican a la industria del entretenimiento para adultos, pero no tienen mucho dinero. Jane conoce a una mujer acniana, Sadie, en una venta de garaje y le compra un termo. La soledad y la falta de afecto. Por un lado Jane intenta triunfar pero lucha sola por ello. Puede que tenga la compañía de Melissa y Mickey en casa, pero en realidad está sola, ya que la relación con su madre es complicada. Sadie, por su parte, es una mujer muy mayor, enviudó hace muchos años y aparentemente no tiene a nadie más. Se pasa el día jugando al bingo con otros ancianos y tiene muy mal genio.
Una amistad casi imposible que nos cautiva a medida que se desarrolla la historia. En esta película Baker también nos lleva de forma entretenida entre situaciones divertidas y dramáticas. Allanando el camino para enamorar al espectador y es en el acto final, donde nos lanza un puñetazo en el estómago, cerrando el círculo de una forma maravillosa y conmovedora. La revelación final no me la esperaba y da más sustento a la historia.
Una de las escenas muestra la desesperación de Sadie, cuando Starlet, el nombre del perro de Jane y el título de la película, se extravía. Puede que la reacción de Sadie al final de esa escena no se entienda al instante. Pero cuando la película termina, todo cobra sentido. Eso es lo maravilloso de este cineasta, consigue emocionarnos desde lo simple y lo que nos cuenta son situaciones muy humanas. Lástima que Dee Hemingway no tenga una carrera más larga y exitosa, aquí hace una interpretación encantadora y hermosa. Bedseka Jhonson fue su primera película, tenía más de ochenta años cuando se rodó y murió un año después del estreno.
No sé si estará en algún servicio de streaming. Deberías buscarla en tu país. Quizá con el actual éxito de Baker en los Oscar, su película pueda estar disponible en alguna plataforma.
