Sugar (2024) has turn out to be a great drama, the story about a family in fact not just John looking for famous film maker missing granddaughter, its more about the family itself and what it starting to look like a mafia of power, most of they do what ever they want at any time with only the old man looking like the straight and correct one but until now is he really the good guy? this kind of story tend to have a lot of ghost in the closet but lets pretend he is.

When ever I think Olivia's case is starting to make sense something even more rotten pops up like he entire life and her surrounding was a screw up, from her family to other people that she know everyone is into something fishy except her grandfather who is in fact the only one giving a shit about her missing. This time around the story lead to a bigger scandal that until now remain hidden, Davy gets involve into a sexual harassment case that the last words of the victim was that she didn't care anymore and was not going to get involve but all of the sudden some one tip out the media, saying it was the actress but I got a feeling it was not her or someone gave her that small push to convince her to accuse him after so long.

    Source

John has not been doing well and its very noticeable, Ruby has seen it a couple of times in person and have been insisting that John visits Dr. Vickers that at first didn't took form any any samples or gave him any pills, the reason I mention this is because for some reason Ruby and the organization they both part of work with Stallings the same guy that is working with Davy and John already met he just don't know all the others that are in bed with Stallings, so John gets the Dr. to check on him and seems fine although he is clearly not. In the meantime Davy visits John's mom who was fully aware of their visit and feed them some bull shit that they bought, John has also bee pushing Ruby to get him more information about Stallings but she keeps giving him the run around trying to evade the topic.

    Source

Melanie who we already know is on bed with Bernie, Davy's father, she visits John to talk more about Olivia's case and she remember Olivia having an argument or agitated conversation with a girl but was not clear about what, I don't think it was coincidence but going around asking for Olivia with her picture where Melanie last time saw her a local who is a Melanie fan did tell them about this girl who was friends with Olivia, happen to be the same girl of the argument that morning, I mean its a drama series that's how things happen on this kind of reality.

    Source

Her name is Taylor, from the "I love this bitch .." video, Olivia love to post videos about her things, what she felt or doing but she never posted about Taylor problem, why? Taylor is the actress been harassed and tormented by Olivias brother Davy, same Davy who is after John trying to figure out who he is, same Davy that with his father are trying to cover up something but we don't know yet, Davy blackmail Taylor with a sex tape, unless they don't keep fucking he would upload it, Taylor went to Olivia but she could not do anything and same for the cops until one day Taylor got this call from Davy's lawyer to sing an NDA and offering some money to what she said fuck off, based on this story Olivia might have something dark on her and its not the innocent girl his grandfather though she was, a girl with drug problems but from his stand point a good person so why she would not backup Taylor story?

    Source

John still do not know Melanie is with Bernie but eventually he will find out, information is been held from him since the organization he is part of works with Stallings and Ruby has been covering up all the data that might trace back to him, Stallings works with Davy and Bernie probably doing their cover ups for every time they fuck up. Point been John is pushing Melanie buttons trying to get her to talk, tell him exactly what she is hiding from him, after they talk to Taylor brought her home and said "it sounds like he (Bernie) have been involved in all this Davy business" for what ever reason it been money or love she is with Bernie but must be really upsetting and disappointing knowing that this person who in this case her lover covers up this shitty attitude from his son, we are not sure yet if he did or not but that was John trap to get her upset although she did not talk in front of him.

    Source

John wants to talk to Jonathan Siegel, most likely to tell him whats going on with his son and grandson, the type of shit they are in, for sure nothing that will surprise him but also nothing that he is worry about, he already told John he doesn't care for anything else in life other than his granddaughter well been, they met at the cinema, there was a moving playing in honor of Jonathan and that's when news strike, all media blogs start posting about how Davy was involve in this scandal that took by surprise Jonathan, was probably the nail in the coffin he could not take and suffers a heart attack.

Everything is so inter connected that I don't know yet where is this going to stop, Bernie and Davy work with Stallings, Ruby and the secret organization that John is part of works with Stallings, seems like he is sleeping with the enemy and yet none of this points to what really happen with Olivia, all we know is that she killed the man on the trunk of her car but nothing else from that point when Melanie last time saw her we have no clue but I think the one that can still point John to Olivia is Melanie but she is keeping information from him probably because it would hurt Bernie, its very likely that she loves Bernie more than Olivia, interesting drama and this episode is a solid 7.5/10, I think Melanie push Taylor to accuse Davy after all this time.

  2. Sugar (2024): Shibuya Crossing - Season 1 - Episode 3 - RECAP@skiptvads792d
    Source

Well there was a message behind Ruby's "I don't like this job for you John.." the story behind Olivia disappearing goes deeper than I thought and might cause conflict of interest between Ruby and John, at first I though she was her agent only and that was it, you know the person who take care of his finance, where he stays, food, doctor, health, etc but she turn out to be more than just that. In the meantime John has no clue of who he is dealing with on both sides, means Melanie is a fucking liar sleeping with the enemy and Ruby who has been always hiding things from John instead of coming straight but the big question is why would she not tell the truth to him? Olivia and her grandfather are nothing to him other than clients unless she is hiding something else from him and this would be the catalyst that would cause distrust from John to Ruby and anyone else that works with them, I say them because its an association of private investigators or spy not clear yet on that subject but Ruby and John are not the only ones.

    Source

"I don't like this case for you" Ruby to John but he never directly asks fucking WHY? they just kept going back and forward, at least one might think she care for John in some way but at the same time she is covering her ass or someones else to potentially avoid John to fuck them up some how because its a fact that the moment he finds out the truth behind that phrase he wont like it and probably take drastic actions against Ruby and anyone in between.

Comes in Stallings, a guy that at first look like another dealer, criminal, what ever, who is looking for his associate Cliff who is missing and worries Stallings because seem this Cliff knows things about him, what if he was caught and starts talking.

    Source

Stallings attempt to put Teresa's hand on a blender to make Melanie talk about Cliff, to make things short Teresa is Carmen's sister the women Olivia constantly visit before going MIA, Carmen was fucking Cliff until one day both went missing so Stallings wants answers, question is how does he knows about Mellanie I guess because she was friends with Carmen only? there is so much more than Stallings and Mellanie havent said, what Mellanie did mention is that he is the prime suspect on Carmen's murder.

Mellanie finally work with John but still keeping only the part of the story she wants him to hear, I haven't mention how Mellanie and Teresa got away from Stallings but that's the little small of action on this series so wont spoil it, Mellanie tells John about the last time she saw Olivia at Carmen's place with a gun on her hand and Cliff with a bullet hole on his head carrying a body back, most likely to pick up Carmen's body which nobody have talk about, they took Cliff and put her on the trunk of Olivia's car then never saw Olivia anymore, I really doubt that's the completestory.

    Source

Davys and his bodyguard who turn out who have a boyfriend who works for NSA made a trade sex for intel on John, the NSA guy Everett Roberts got a lot of info on John and Ruby is kinda a hacker? she got good security and surveillance systems on their guys like John so she got alerted Everett was after John.

    Source

On episode 2 Davys found a party invitation on John's place and after some investigation seem the party was run by this type of secret agency by international spies who have come together for the better of society and be the good guys but I think there is just too much information going around that it turn into a business and every business man has an agenda, it looks like John is not part of that agenda becoming the stone in the shoe once he started to get closer, who knows if Stallings work with this agency and now they got John digging too deep.

    Source

Believe it or not Davys was into something concrete but since he is always treated like an idiot his father did not pay enough attention with what he has discover so far and too it very lightly, they now going to visit John's mother to discover more about him.

John knows they are into him but has no clue how much they know so far and Ruby is hiding the truth from John so even if he wanted to see he couldn't, she got him blinded and called her boss to get authorization to safe Stallings ass before John gets to him at this point I think they will try to do what ever it takes to not let John discover the truth behind Olivia, Cliff, Carmen and why they don't trust John with this information.

The story of this series to be honest just get better and better but I can understand if this is not a popular one because the truth is that its all drama and investigation job, no action, no shooting, no magic just a regular guy trying to find a missing rich girl who has the world against her, her father, her brother and now John himself indirectly has the very same agency he work with against him so uncovering the truth would be a tough job, I wonder what he will do when he finds out Ruby was hiding intel from him, the Olivia case has actually gone into the less important thing, the main problem at hand is WHY is Ruby hiding stuff from John, why Ruby works with Stallings and what John doesn't what others to know about him, after all he did said "cant have davy digging about his past life.

  3. Sugar (2024): These People, These Places - Season 1 - Episode 2 - RECAP@skiptvads793d
    Source

I'm trying to catch up on Sugar (2024) since I'm one episode behind but this weekend might just post both, shortly after three episodes the series has gone down in rating and I personally was amaze that it was over 80% acceptance since this style of filming tends to be boring, it is interesting though because its all about who is lying, put away the noise and focus on the target while John has everyone against him.

Episode 2 has close to nothing new but finally Olivia father confront John, he has been the one sending Davy to do intel on John making thing worst and at the same time more interesting because why would the father of the missing girl don't want to find her, same goes for her brother, the only answer would be that they are covering up for something, at this point I'm not trusting anyone not even her grandfather who actually hired John to find her, this family is all fucked up.

    Source

Missing rich girl whose father doesn't care if she is found, but why? John interview Olivia's father Bernie Siegel who is a movie director too as his father but lacks the talent. Episode 1 John found some videos online where Olivia seem desperate that made him dig deeper between her stuff at the apartment and found a bunch of Polaroid of her mother, nudes that Bernie denied taking so either those were artistic or she was cheating on him, that could mess up Olivia's head but not to disappear, at least this gives John grounds to know that Olivia comes from a broken home. The conversation with Bernie was very short, he denied knowing where she was and refer to her search as a waste of time and money.

    Source

How would a father say looking for his daughter is a waste of time and money but at the same time saying he cares for his missing daughter? unless he knows where she is and how she is doing. John is sleek and caught Davy and his bodyguard on camera sniffing at his place then he mention "I can't have him digging into my past..." what past? what thing has John done that he doesn't want others to know? so now the mystery is on both directions.

    Source

Talking to the family was making no sense, dead end so John went to Olivia's friends who were very open but did not help that much, from Melanie now John knows Olivia was trying to get sober, also her grandfather told him she was sober the last time they met but why? usually when you are addicted to something people don't stop because they want to be a better person, usually it happens because of an event, something went wrong to the point that it is rock bottom for that person so they take the decision to change, this is the most common scenario.

    Source

Olivia's grandfather confirm this theory, she was a fuck up period and for the rest of the family would always be except for him, here is when some dots start to connect, before going MIA Olivia has been visiting an address multiple times, it was Carmen Vasquez place and I bet Melanie knows her but do they know where Olivia is?

    Source

John has this ability to not getting drunk even though he drinks like a fish well Melanie doesn't, seems she is an alcoholic so she was easy target for him but didn't got her talking as he probably wanted the first time so he tries again after attending a meeting with her for Alcoholics, she knew she had to start fresh but the moment he ask for the guy in the bag at Olivia's car trunk she panic, start lying and that's when John found a north on this investigation, at least now he knows Melanie can be of real help, she knows the guy and Olivia but Melanie decides not to talk about it.

    Source

John is just too much of a good guy and extremely smart but this time it was not enough, he got three leads:

    • Melanie
    • Carmen Vasquez
    • The dead guy in the trunk, Clifford

Problem is Melanie is not talking, the guy in the trunk is gone, he goes checking and some one clean up and took the guy, for that to happen must be some one that needs to keep it a secret, he knows it was not Melanie so the first suspects are Bernie and Davy, he is about to talk to Carmen, her sister Teresa receive an unexpected visit from Clifford associate looking for him and his first lead is Teresa since he cant get a hold to Carmen who was dating Clifford so its just a matter of time before John figure this out.

Things are starting to unfold although there is no motive or reason for Olivia to be gone so John needs to keep asking the right questions to the right persons, those who knew Olivia directly or some one close to her, in this case Melanie spook when she saw Clifford picture so she probably knows he is dead but then how Carmen ties to Melanie, I would only guess Olivia, Melanie and Carmen use to party together when Carmen was dating Clifford or for some other reason the three knew each other. Things are not clear but some things are starting to make sense but the biggest question is WHY Olivia's family doesn't want others to know where is and the only one looking for her is Jonathan, Olivia's grandfather, I would not discard him of knowing what the fuck is going on if what we are doing is elaborating conspiracy theories because that is exactly what the rest of her family is doing at saying they care about her but they don't care where the fuck she is.

Sugar (2024) is more than just a private investigator TV series, is more about the details in the production, the mix shots, the mix of video formats, the angles, the way John is a vintage guy and movie lover but I understand how all this can still be boring for others, theme song is really cool with that 80s vibe.

  4. Sugar (2024) : Olivia - Season 1 - Episode 1 - RECAP@skiptvads801d
    Source

Sugar (2024) has really caught my attention, its not a series for everyone, I believe its a series for a certain niche kind of people who like certain style of movies, on a thread I mention its very Tarantino for multiple reasons so this recap will mostly talk about how you might enjoy or not this series moving forward. John Sugar the main character is a specialist at finding lost people, with a certain James Bond style it also reminds me at a not so popular movie of Nicolas Cage where he is hired by a widow to find a girl, different reasons but the end goal is to find a lost girl.

The reason why I like this series so much only on its second episodes its the style of production, the weird camera angles, the change in frames, mix images from 60s to modern 2000s on top of the mix of cultures from Japanese, Arabic, the guy speaks multiple languages and is very old school but over all a Movie Geek, Sugar (2024) is like you are watching Kill Bill Mix with James Bond on a kinda of time travel to match the contrast scenes from vintage to modern, its so awesome.

    Source

Right out of the start John Sugar presents himself as a private investigator, the series starts with a scene in Japan, black and white, old school zoom in on Mount Fuji with the classic circular shape closing in and moving into the next scene where John is looking for a kid that has been kidnap, sets the bait with some cash telling a guy he just left it down stairs, wtf that so silly but so it was on movies from the 60s. John is working for a Yakuza boss looking for his son who this random guy has kidnap and ask for ransom, the fight starts after the guy knows he has been discover and obviously John knows very well how to throw his hands around and tells the guy "I don't like hurting people" when he got him pin down.

    Source

We continue with the classic vintage theme and silly actions, John is back at his hotel eating dinner what looks like Japanese on a robe and catches a fly that was buzzing around with his shop sticks, come on; then lets it go, right after this scene it shows a modern city he staying in but at the same time has contrast scenes of probably how the same city look back say in between 70s to 90s to finish off with him reading an email while the camera zoom in and focus on what he is reading again on a classic old school circular shape shade style. The combination of all this aspects makes it so so special that many might not appreciate but its a very nostalgic production.

    Source

Making a pause on the production and working towards the context of the series, John is back in US to meet his agent named Ruby, she is very aware that John is sick, she might not know all the truth about it but she can tell, Ruby tries to go into every detail so he can take care of himself physically and mentally, trying to take some load out of his work managing clients but John likes to work with their clients at a personal level sometimes going too too extra mile on the job, Ruby knowing John doesn't like guns got him one but its the one Glenn Ford used on the movie The Big Heat, talk about manipulation. Ruby and John argue about a client he has recently take even after they already reach her and said John was not available but John has more than one reason to take this case.

    Source

I wonder this series with ever stop to amaze me with the production style and details to make John not your average private investigator, the guy drives a Corvette, don't quote me but if I'm not mistaken probably be a Nassau Blue 60s Stingray, at the same time while he cruise the city you get this mix images from 60s cars and him going fast, on top we get all kind of different camera angles like when he is on the car the is a shot from the middle console of the car towards his face when he is about to get out of the car, I know I'm probably not giving much context about the episode but the truth is that there is no action, all talk and private investigator work.

    Source

The reasons why John took the job, well the client is a very famous Hollywood Movie Producer who John is a fan, an old guy called Jonathan Siegel whose granddaughter Olivia is currently lost, Olvia reminds John of a woman Jen who has not yet been talk about, I assume is someone John lost in the past either daughter, client or even a girlfriend although she looks to young in the pictures to be his lover so John had no option but to take the job, too many things at the same time were screaming at him to take it and Ruby things its all bull shit because probably he has manipulate her in the past.

    Source

Mr. Siegel has reach and age that he no longer cares for himself but he does a lot for his granddaughter, there is one particular scenario that complicates things and its that in the past Olivia turn out to be unpredictable, she was a drug addict but the last time Mr. Siegel saw her they were celebrating her two years sober, she has disappear in the past although Mr. Siegel feels this time is different that probably something happen to her. John is going to have to start from ground zero since no body have seen her in a while and the best start is her apartment where also her car is, in there he will find quite a few leads of people that saw Olivia on the past two months and the hunt starts.

Sugar (2024) has a lot of unique aspects that has nothing to do with Colin Farell great acting so far or the script, the way the episodes are produce, the shots, the music, the camera angles, the scene contrasts, everything about it visually is awesome and nostalgic at the same time for any Movie Geek, I'm not pretending to be an expert about the topic but at least that is how this series makes my brain react.

The character of John Sugar himself is very cool too, all smooth, collected, expert at many things and talks many languages, even at a point you might think who the fuck is so nice to others but Sugar is a guy who give people second chances even when they look like they have reach rock bottom because that is why probably Olivia is missing, Sugar also look like a guy of many secrets but he has too based on the type of clients he manage, this is a great series and I might be just a bit to excited but I think I give it a 9/10 for the first episode hands down.
