  1. Film Review: Superbad (2007)@drax645d

    (source: tmdb.org)

In the first decade of the 21st century, Judd Apatow solidified his reputation as Hollywood's King of Comedy, not only due to the quality and commercial success of the films he directed but also because he assembled a talented group of individuals who would distinguish themselves as writers and directors in their own right. Apatow played a significant role in nurturing their talents as producers. One such project was Superbad, a 2007 film directed by Greg Mottola.

The screenplay for Superbad was originally written by Canadian screenwriters and best friends Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogan when they were teenagers in the 1990s Vancouver, inspired by their own lives. The film's protagonists are named after the writers themselves. The plot unfolds over 24 hours in Clark County, Nevada, following Seth (played by Jonah Hill) and his best friend Evan (played by Michael Cera), two high school seniors who are about to part ways as they head to different colleges after graduation. Both young men are eager to lose their virginity before the transition, and the opportunity presents itself at a party that will be attended by Seth's love interest, Jules (played by Emma Stone), and Evan's love interest, Becca (played by Martha McIsaac). Jules has invited Seth to the party, while Evan promised Becca that he would bring a specific brand of vodka. However, the problem for them is that, due to their minor status, they cannot purchase alcoholic drinks. The apparent solution to this problem comes in the form of Fogell (played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse), who has obtained a fake ID. The plan to purchase drinks becomes increasingly complicated with the arrival of two policemen, Officer Michaels (played by Rogan) and Officer Slater (played by Bill Hader), who ultimately befriend Fogell.

Upon its premiere, many critics hailed Superbad as the film that "rescued" or "resurrected" the genre of teen comedy. However, the film's success had more to do with being Judd Apatow's production, and, as such, it was deliberately unburdened by the PG-13 rating yoke, just like many other Apatow comedies. The seemingly "revolutionary" content consisted mainly of salty language, some jokes, and visual representations of male genitalia, as well as moments of gross-out humour concerning various bodily fluids.

On the other hand, all this adds to the film's realism, making Superbad something a person who actually remembers their teenage years might partially identify with. It deals with a base obsession with sex and drinks, and, despite some discussions about the characters' future, there isn't anything particularly "deep" about the whole film. There are some interesting ironic twists, such as Fogell's character, who, despite his un-charismatic looks, succeeds in "scoring" and becoming the "coolest" of them all, or the policemen, who, despite nominally being responsible adults, act in the most immature manner.

Much of the film's success is due to the inspired cast, although Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, despite good "buddy buddy" dynamics, get overshadowed by larger-than-life Christopher Mintz-Plasse in his first major role. Emma Stone, who would later achieve many great things, is solid but not too memorable as one of the protagonist's love interests.

The film's biggest problem appears to be pacing; with almost two hours, Superbad is definitely overlong, and some of the jokes, especially near the end, look repetitive and ineffective. At the end of the day, Superbad is mostly funny and entertaining, although it would work best among an audience with lowered expectations.

SuperBad is a teen comedy released in 2007, starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, directed by Greg Mottola and produced by Judd Apatow.

This movie shows us Seth and Evan, two teenagers who want to celebrate and get a little crazy in their last days in high school, but their plan doesn't go quite right and they get involved in more complicated situations than they expected.

I want to start by saying that this movie easily enters my top 5 favorite comedy movies, it entertains me and makes me laugh a lot, I really have a lot of affection for this movie, it seems like a classic to me,

This movie has a very high level cast, we have Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Chris Mintz-Plasse, Bill Hader, Seth Rogen, Martha MacIsaac y Emma Stone, so that's a good start and we can say that it is a great positive point.

Why did I enjoy this movie so much? Because it has a very interesting humor, apart from the fact that the situations shown in the film are already funny by themselves, the way each character assumes it is what gives it that plus.

It is true that sometimes it tends to fall into a somewhat vulgar humor, and with that adolescent approach, but personally I feel that it knows how to carry it perfectly, I feel it has a pretty good balance, it does not fall into the typical "basic" vulgar humor.

I feel that any fan of the genre should have seen this movie at least once in their life, it's not that it has a super complex humor, not at all, but it fulfills its goal perfectly, which is to make you laugh.

I really do not get tired of watching this movie, every time I have the opportunity I watch it and I keep laughing at the same scenes, plus the end has a nice message about friendship so, what more can you ask for?

Totally recommended this movie, I would like to know if you have ever seen it and if so what is your opinion about it.

  3. Superbad (film): My first real introduction to these guys@gooddream2661d

Two of them went on to make stellar careers for themselves and the other kind of got type-casted and has difficulty finding work (relatively.) I wasn't really familiar with Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, or McLovin prior to this film and it still makes me laugh a lot when I revisit it.

    [source](https://ih1.redbubble.net/image.420245052.7228/flat,550x550,075,f.u4.jpg)

It was produced by Judd Apatow and written partly by Seth Rogan so I suppose it shouldn't be that much of a surprise that it was a success. The topic matter at hand is something that I and a great many people in the west face in our high-school years: The social hierarchy of school cliques, handling your newly acquired sexuality, and also facing the unknown of how much everyone's lives will change following high-school graduation.

    superbad.jpg source

The film focuses almost entirely on these three fellas and mostly about their desire to obtain booze for a party that they believe to be out of their social league. They want to impress the girls by fulfilling a promise that they were unprepared for: The acquisition of alcohol. I know this isn't exactly a novel storyline, but the dialogue that takes place between the various characters (in particular Seth, played by Johan Hill) is just outstanding and hilarious.

    hqdefault.jpg source

An extremely unknown Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays Fogell / McLovin - who I have not seen in many films since. I am sure he is trying hard to break the stigma of only being capable of playing a McLovin type character. I actually got to meet him on the set of a video game advertisement that took place in Krabi - he was a very down-to-earth dude and very approachable.

Some of the best scenes in the film star McLovin and his two extremely uncop-like-cops friends played by Seth Rogan and Bill Hader. Their interactions with one another are just epic.

    [source](https://cdn1.thecomeback.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/superbad_trio-832x447.jpg)

I think that Hader and Rogan were probably the best people to play these roles because in real life they are quite childish and the idea of two cops being as uncaring about the system as they are is impractical and hilarious.

Overall this movie is incredibly juvenile and that is precisely what they were going for. I believe it is a fairly accurate portrayal of a lot of the things people face in high-school and beyond, and that also made it a bit nostalgic for me (although I relate to the middle-aged cops more than the high school students.) If you have not seen this movie yet, you really should go and do so. It is on Netflix. Don't fall for the "full length film!" listings on Youtube. It should be evident that these are all scams.

on a scale of "urgh!" to "Wowsers" Superbad scores a ....

  4. Superbad (film): extremely funny introduction to Jonah Hill@gooddream2827d

there aren't many films in existence that can make me laugh as much as this one did. As a matter of fact I am able to at minimum have a giggle just recalling certain scenes from it. A lot of this has to do with Jonah Hill, who in my mind at least, solidified himself as a comedy powerhouse in this movie.

    pa.115222.1.jpg probably pronounced Super-ah-badd-oh

I had heard of Michael Cera (from Juno) but at least for me this was a welcome-wagon of sorts to Jonah Hill, who is by far the most outstanding actor of this movie. Of course we also got to meet McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse,) who i suspect we won't really see much more of in his career.

    SB_TF3.png

The entire story behind Superbad is what is referred to as a "coming of age" film. The fellas are all still in high school and are concerned about how they will be going to college next year and well, they are preoccupied with the normal things that people who still live with their parents are normally concerned with: college, hooking up with girls, and how to score booze.

The involvement of two of my favorite comedy actors, Set Rogan and Bill Hader as a couple of slightly strange police officers was a real treat in the film, and they provide plenty of laughs as well because they clearly don't give a crap about enforcing the law and abuse their power whenever possible.

    image.jpg

I think out of all the thousands of movies that i have watched (and honestly, there likely hasn't been thousands) that this is one of my favorite comedies of the past 20 years. Jonah Hill has gone on to show us that he is not a one-trick pony and actually can perform as a serious actor as well - which is good. I don't feel the same about the rest of the cast and unless they do something totally different in the next couple of years, I suspect they will be restricted to silly comedies in perpetuity - which isn't necessarily a bad thing because there is a lot of money in comedy... this film made $140 million, for example.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie the first time i saw it, and the 20 of so times i watched if after the first try. Therefore, if you enjoy juvenile humor, there is a a better-than-average chance that you will enjoy it as well. It comes highly recommended by the dream.

  5. Superbad (2007) - Goldslick Vodka As Motif@lionsuit2907d

    Superbad 1~2.png

A film like this relies so much on execution. The direction, writing, performances, editing all hit right on point.

A great high school classic style film from the 2000's.

    jkxltmk05o7co7.jpg

Directed by Greg Mottola, written by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg

One fun and core motif here is the Goldslick Vodka that Becca asks for early in the film.

    maxresdefault (2).jpg

This becomes the item, the object that will grant Evan connection to her. It becomes the key alcohol that represents all alcohol in this world. It is the gold in the gold heist. It is the treasure.

When the glass bottle drops to the floor and smashes open, we have lost more than just liquor.

    DHhxgwmUQAAHIZi.jpg

The fact that all this is built on the guys' insecurity and inability to connect interpersonally with the girls they like, the fact that they themselves proclaim alcohol as their only chance at romance, this only makes the story all the more funny.

    SB_TF3.png

Give us the "gold" of the dead-serious bank robbery movie, but put it in the absurdity of the world of high school romance and all that comes along with your early years of "dating."

    Be well. http://www.LionSuit.com
