  1. Film Review: Supernova (2000)@drax1152d

Walter Hill has built his reputation as writer and director of many great action films. Fans of science fiction know him mostly for his work as producer of Alien, one of the genre classics, and its sequels. So, when he was announced that he would actually direct his first science fiction film, expectations were quite high. And, consequently, when Supernova turned into one of the most notorious flops of 2000, disappointment was even greater.

The plot is set in early 22nd Century and begins when medical space ship Nightingale 229 receives distresss call from distant mining colony Titan 37. Colony is over 3000 light years away, so the ship’s commander A. J. Marley (played by Robert Forster) is forced to jump through transdimensional wormholes in order to arrive on time. During the jump equipment malfunctions resulting in his death, so command of the ship is taken by cynical former drug addict Nick Venzant (played by James Spader) who is, together with doctor Kaela Evans (played by Robin Tunney), forced to not only rescue the miners but salvage heavily damaged ship that is being pulled by gravitational forces of a dying star. Another unpleasant surprise comes when it is revealed that Karl Larson (played by Peter Facinelli), the only survivor on the colony, doesn’t have any medical problems and was actually part of Kaela’s past. Before they get insight into his motives, Venzant and his crew must deal with mysterious alien artefact Larson brought on board.

Visual style of Supernova gives away clear influence of Alien and its famous 1986 sequel, mostly thanks to very good cinematography by Lloyd Ahern II, dominated by blue overtones, and more than decent special effects. However, all that is accompanied by extremely poor script that rehashes all the worst cliches of bad science fiction films like Event Horizon or Sphere with only tantalising glimpses of interesting characterisation that made Alien work so well. Scientific basis for the film is weak and the supernova from the title appears only at the very end and doesn’t have much effect on the plot that looks more like uninspired slasher film in deep space.

Poor quality of the film can be attributed to the very troubled production, which included Walter Hill abandoning project over creative differences with MGM studio and being replaced by Jack Sholder and Francis Ford Coppola before returning only to sign himself under pseudonym “Thomas Lee” in order to distance himself from the film. Under such circumstances, the only decent work was done by the part of the cast. Unlike Peter Facinelli as forgettable villain or Robin Tunney whose impressive bare breasts (available in uncensored international version) are more memorable than her acting, Spader and Angela Bassett play their one-dimensional characters with suprising levels of seriousness and professionalism. Spader plays cynical anti-hero in the same way Vin Diesel would play the similar protagonist of Pitch Black. Unfortunately, his efforts weren’t enough to rescue film from box office catastrophe or bad critical reviews. Those who happen to watch Supernova today could easily see that such fate was well-deserved.
