The most important aspect of any streaming platform is its curation—that is, how the films available are chosen. Beyond each brand's own productions, streaming services have certain criteria for choosing the titles they upload each season and in each region of the world; and, in my opinion, this is where MUBI differentiates itself—for the better—from other services like Netflix, HBO, or Amazon Prime Video.

El aspecto más importante de cualquier plataforma de streaming es su curaduría, es decir, cómo se escogen las películas que van a tener disponibles. Más allá de las producciones propias de cada marca, los servicios de streaming tienen ciertos criterios para elegir los títulos que suben en cada temporada y en cada región del planeta; y, en mi opinión, ese es el aspecto en el que MUBI se diferencia - para bien - de otros servicios como Netflix, HBO o Prime Video.

That's why on MUBI you can find a selection of titles based on European film festivals, or with specific themes that aren't always very common, or you can find lesser-known works by famous actors and directors, or some cult films. On MUBI, I saw the first short film by Charlotte Wells (director of Aftersun) or Coralie Fargeat's first idea that later became The Substance, and I also found Supernova there, a film starring none other than Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. Supernova is a romantic and dramatic story written and directed by Harry McQueen that tells the story of Sam (Firth) and Tusker (Tucci), a couple going through a difficult time after being together for many years. Sam is an English pianist and Tusker is an American writer; they both live in England and are amateur astronomers who enjoy spending time together gazing at the stars. At the beginning of the film, we see them embarking on a road trip, as a typical activity for any couple, but little by little, we realize that the trip isn't intended for a place but for an experience; their itinerary includes a piano recital, a visit to family and friends, and a stop at a landscape significant in the couple's history. Without giving too much away, or at least not too explicitly, it soon becomes clear why they're on the trip, why Sam is the one who decides to drive and cook, why he point to Tusker that he should rest, and why he gets so scared when he loses sight of him for a moment.

Por eso, en MUBI puedes encontrar una selección de títulos basados en festivales de cine europeos, o con temáticas específicas no siempre muy comunes, o puedes encontrar trabajos menos conocidos de actores y directores famosos o algunas obras de culto. En MUBI vi el primer cortometraje de Charlotte Wells (directora de Aftersun) o la primera idea de Coralie Fargeat que después se convirtió en The Substance y también allí encontré Supernova una película protagonizada nada más y nada menos que por Colin Firth y Stanley Tucci. Supernova es una historia romántica y dramática escrita y dirigida por Harry McQueen que cuenta la historia de Sam (Firth) y Tusker (Tucci) una pareja que atraviesa una situación difícil después de estar muchos años juntos. Sam es un pianista inglés y Tusker un escritor norteamericano; ambos viven en Inglaterra y son astrónomos aficionados que disfrutan pasar tiempo juntos mirando las estrellas. Al inicio de la película los vemos emprender un viaje por carretera, como una actividad propia de cualquier pareja, pero poco a poco nos vamos dando cuenta de que el viaje no tiene como destino un lugar sino una experiencia; en su itinerario hay un recital de piano, una visita a familiares y amigos y una parada en un paisaje significativo en la historia de la pareja. Sin contar mucho, o al menos no de forma muy explícita, pronto queda claro el por qué del viaje, por qué Sam es quien decide conducir y cocinar, por qué le señala a Tusker que debe descansar y por qué se asusta tanto cuando lo pierde de vista durante un momento.

The first thing one is tempted to think is that Tusker suffers from a terminal illness like cancer, but although his medical condition is irreversible, it's not so suddenly lethal. Tusker is in the early stages of dementia. Little by little, over time, he will become permanently disoriented and will not recognize the places or people he loves. It's a battle lost in advance, because although he doesn't know when the moment of the final breakdown will be, he knows that he's inevitably walking toward that dark destiny.

Lo primero que uno se siente tentado a pensar es que Tusker padece alguna enfermedad terminal como cáncer, pero aunque su condición médica es irreversible, no es tan súbitamente letal. Tusker se encuentra en las primeras etapas de padecer demencia. Poco a poco, con el tiempo, se desorientará permanentemente y no reconocerá los lugares ni las personas amadas. Es una lucha perdida de antemano, porque aunque no sepa cuál será el momento del quiebre definitivo, sabe que camina inevitablemente hacia ese oscuro destino.

This is where the film's central dilemma arises. On the one hand, Sam, who has retired from his career as a musician, wants to remain by Tusker's side at all times, caring for him, being with him. Even though it can be a heavy burden at times, and he's afraid of watching the man he loves slowly begin to forget everything, including him, he wants to remain steadfast by his side. Sam doesn't want to place Tusker in a nursing home, nor does he want him to exert too much effort: he prefers to do it himself for both of them. For Sam, this is a demonstration of his love and it's what he feels is right, what should be done, and what he wants to do. His partner isn't so keen. Tusker feels it's unfair for Sam to have to endure this, and more than how burdensome it can make Sam's life, what Tusker most fears or most wants to avoid is becoming someone else. Tusker wants to be remembered for the person he was and not the person he's going to become, which is why he doesn't want Sam or anyone close to him to be by his side when the inevitable happens, because he prefers to keep the memory of his best version alive in the hearts and minds of others. Furthermore, Tusker feels that no one has the right to decide his own destiny above himself, not even Sam. He appreciates his care, his love, he loves him too, but he doesn't want to depend on anyone and prefers to say goodbye to everyone now that he can still recognize them, joke around as he always has, and say a few emotional words from his writer's mind.

Es allí donde se presenta el dilema central de la película. Por un lado, Sam, quien se ha retirado de su carrera como músico, quiere permanecer junto a Tusker en todo momento, cuidarlo, estar con él y aunque pudiera ser una carga pesada a veces y tiene miedo de observar cómo el hombre que ama poco a poco comienza a olvidarlo todo, incluso a él, quiere mantenerse firme a su lado. Sam no quiere internar a Tusker en un hogar de cuidados ni quiere que haga demasiados esfuerzos: prefiere esforzarse él por los dos. Para Sam esto es una demostración de su amor y es lo que siente que es lo correcto, lo que se debe hacer y lo que quiere hacer. Su pareja no está tan de acuerdo. Tusker siente que no es justo para Sam tener que soportar eso y más que lo pesada que puede hacerle la vida a Sam, lo que Tusker más teme o más quiere evitar es convertirse en alguien distinto. Tusker quiere ser recordado por la persona que fue y no por la persona en la que se va a convertir, por eso no quiere que ni Sam ni nadie cercano esté a su lado cuando ocurra lo inevitable, porque prefiere mantener vivo el recuerdo de su mejor versión en el corazón y la mente de los demás. Además, Tusker siente que nadie tiene derecho a decidir sobre su propio destino por encima de él mismo, ni siquiera Sam. Agradece sus cuidados, su amor, lo ama él también, pero no quiere depender de nadie y prefiere despedirse de todos ahora que aún puede reconocerlos, bromear como siempre lo ha hecho y decir algunas palabras emotivas salidas de su mente de escritor.

The central theme of the film is letting go and letting go. Sam must learn to let go of Tusker, who can no longer accompany him in the same way as always, and he must also let go of his desire to control everything. For his part, Tusker must let go of his sanity, his memory, the person he's been until then, and eventually—if he manages to retain any consciousness—let go in the face of final disappearance.

El tema central de la película es dejar y dejarse ir. Sam tiene que aprender a soltar a Tusker, quien ya no podrá acompañarlo de la misma forma que siempre y tiene que soltar además su deseo de controlarlo todo. Por su parte, Tusker tiene que dejar ir su cordura, su memoria, la persona que ha sido hasta entonces y eventualmente - si es que logra conservar algo de consciencia - dejarse ir ante la desaparición definitiva.

Firth & Tucci

I didn't know anything about this film until I stumbled upon it on MUBI, but when I saw Colin Firth alongside Stanley Tucci, I didn't hesitate for a second to see it (and in fact, their performances are the best thing about the film). Colin Firth is a great actor, not only an Oscar winner, but also the star of famous films like Kingsman, Magic In the Moonlight, The King's Speech, A Single Man, and of course the Birdget Jones films. And Stanley Tucci, alongside Michael Shannon, is one of my favorite supporting actors. He's not always at the forefront of the plot, but he always delivers and adds quality to any story, regardless of the genre. With dramatic roles in Worth and Spotlight, eccentric ones like his role in The Hunger Games, funny ones as Emma Stone's father in Easy A or as Nigel in The Devil Wears Prada, and most recently as a Vatican cardinal in Conclave, Tucci's acting range is wonderful, and I always enjoy watching him on screen. Added to this is the chemistry between the two actors when portraying an adult love story with its dramas, challenges, complaints, and also tenderness and vulnerability. Love stories don't always have to be impetuous and impulsive displays of affection between two teenagers in the middle of summer. Love can also be two grown men embracing in front of a lake, thinking about what they've been through and fighting against time and the life that condemns them to oblivion. Yo no sabía nada de esta película hasta que me topé con ella en MUBI, pero cuando vi a Colin Firth junto a Stanley Tucci, no dudé ni un segundo en verla (y de hecho, sus actuaciones son lo mejor de la película). Colin Firth es un gran actor, no sólo ganador del Oscar, sino también protagonista de películas famosas como Kingsman, Magic In the Moonlight, The King's Speech, A Single Man y por supuesto las películas de Birdget Jones. Y Stanley Tucci, junto a Michael Shannon, es uno de mis actores de reparto favoritos. No siempre está al frente de la trama, pero siempre cumple y suma calidad a cualquier historia, sin importar el género. Con papeles dramáticos en Worth y Spotlight, excéntricos como su participación en The Hunger Games, divertidos como padre de Emma Stone en Easy A o como Nigel en The Devil Wears Prada, y más recientemente como un cardenal del Vaticano en Conclave el rango actoral de Tucci es maravilloso y disfruto verlo siempre en pantalla. A ello sumamos la química entre ambos actores a la hora de interpretar una historia de amor en la adultez con sus dramas, desafíos, reclamos y también ternura y vulnerabilidad. Las historias de amor no siempre tienen que ser impetuosas e impulsivas demostraciones de afecto entre dos adolescentes en medio del verano. Amor también pueden ser dos hombres adultos abrazados frente a un lago pensando en lo que han vivido y luchando contra el tiempo y la vida que los condena al olvido, ¿alguno de ustedes ha visto esta película?
