2. ›Tau (film): A just OK Netflix original@gooddream2557d

   I am starting to lose faith in Netflix original films and to be honest, Netflix in general. For the time being (where I live anyway) there is no alternative to the service so I will have to stick with it or just watch nothing.

   Anyway, this is about a 2018 Scifi film that I watched yesterday and to be honest, it wasn't as terrible as I expected but it was still pretty bad and loaded with plot holes.

   The story goes like this: "Julia" (played actually quite well by Maika Monroe) is a 20 something hottie who makes a living by stealing things at nightclubs. One day she is abducted in her apartment and wakes up restrained in a prison of sorts. There are other people there that are in the same situation as her and she notices that they have an implant on the back of their necks... she checks, and realizes that she has one too.

   She doesn't know in what capacity, but she is a guinea pig of sorts as are her fellow "inmates." One day she organizes a breakout of preposterous proportions and it results in the robot guard killing the other two fellow prisoners. As the mechanical sentinel is preparing to off her as well, the master of the house, Alex (Ed Skrein or "captain cheekbones" as I now call him) puts a stop to it.

   He reveals to Julia that this project is now behind schedule because of her destroying parts of his lab and then concedes to offer her additional privileges if she complies with the tests that he needs her to perform to complete the Artificial Intelligence trials on time.

   This results in her meeting "Tau" which is the AI that controls the house/ prison as well as collects that test data for Alex. Tau is more like a naive kid than anything else because while he (it has a male voice) is quick and all-controlling as you would expect a computer to be, he has a "Johnny 5" interest in "input" that he has not been pre-programmed with and is forbidden to learn. Julia is able to bribe Tau into telling her stuff in exchange for reading him books about the outside world - which Tau didn't know existed.

   You could say that Juila and Tau become friends with a mutual enemy named Alex who actually controls everything because he controls Tau.

   There are some really dumb elements to this movie but given the extraordinarily weak storyline I think they did OK with it. I will admit that I was a bit bored at times, but still feel as though this film is still heaps better than most of the Netflix originals out there and they clearly had a decent budget because at least some of the CGI looks pretty good (don't get me wrong, a lot of it is bad too.)

   I wont say this movie was terrible because I don't believe that to be the case. If you have an interest in SciFi like I do, you might find it slightly above average. If you aren't a fan of the genre, then you would likely switch it off after 20 minutes (the first 20 minutes are probably the best part of the film.)

   Overall, i give Tau a rating of....
