"Maestro" is one of those films about which it is quite difficult for me to talk, especially because even though I did not connect on a personal level with its content, it is undeniable that it offers us a brilliant technical and artistic display.

If there's one thing that the recent trend of producing an absurd amount of biopics has shown us (In fact, we could technically classify this year's biggest films: Oppenheimer and KOTFM in this genre), it's that despite how generic they sound in paper, when it comes to practice there is a field of infinite possibilities, where some filmmakers have done experimental wonders, and others have decided to stay on the conservative path, portraying on screen a number of historical events that we could well have read on Wikipedia.

Directed by Bradley Cooper (and starring him) it is difficult to classify "Maestro" within one of these trends, because although it plays a lot with its own audiovisual possibilities (constant changes in aspect ratio, moments in color and moments in black and white or his directing style in general), when it comes time to tell a story he follows a painfully conservative path, determined to provide a typical Oscar bait rather than being a refreshing exploration of the life of a brilliant but controversial man.

There is a reason we have seen countless comparisons with "Tár", the drama released last year in which Cate Blanchett played a fictional composer with a good amount of controversies behind her.

Although both productions are beasts with different purposes, it is undeniable that there is something in the structure and script of Maestro that leaves us with a bitter taste in our mouths, as if the way in which it decided to approach reality was correct but anticlimactic, as if He genuinely had nothing important to tell us.

It's a shame, considering that Cooper gave a wonderful performance as Leonard Bernstein, and, although he prefers other more subtle roles such as Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Leonardo DiCaprio (KOTFM) or even Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), an Oscar nomination It would be very deserved.

The painful thing about the whole thing is that leaving aside the good cinematography, the good acting, the good music and the good editing, "Maestro" has nothing particularly compelling to show its audience.

"Maestro" es una de esas películas sobre las cuales se me dificulta bastante hablar, especialmente porque a pesar de que yo no conecté a nivel personal con el contenido de la misma, es innegable que nos brinda un despliegue técnico y artístico brillante.

Si hay algo que nos ha demostrado la tendencia reciente de producir una cantidad absurda de biopics (De hecho, técnicamente podríamos catalogar los filmes más grandes de este año: Oppenheimer y KOTFM en este género), es que a pesar de lo genéricas que suenan en papel, a la hora de la práctica hay un terreno de posibilidades infinitas, en dónde algunos cineastas han hecho maravillas experimentales, y otros han decidido quedarse por el camino conservador, retratando en pantalla una cantidad de eventos históricos que bien podríamos haber leído en Wikipedia.

Dirigida por Bradley Cooper (Y protagonizada por el mismo) es difícil catalogar "Maestro" dentro de una de estas tendencias, porque aunque juega bastante con sus propias posibilidades audiovisuales (Cambios constantes de aspect ratio, momentos a color y momentos a blanco y negro o su estilo de dirección en general), cuando llega la hora de narrar una historia sigue un camino dolorosamente conservador, empeñado en brindar un típico Oscar bait antes que ser una exploración refrescante a la vida de un hombre brillante pero polémico.

Por algo hemos visto incontables comparaciones con "Tár", el drama estrenado el año pasado en dónde Cate Blanchett interpretaba a una compositora ficticia con una buena cantidad de polémicas a sus espaldas.

Aunque ambas producciones son bestias con propósitos diferentes, es innegable que existe algo en la estructura y el guión de Maestro que nos deja con un sabor de boca amargo, como si la forma en la que decidió abordar la realidad fuese acertada pero anticlimática, como si genuinamente no tuviese nada importante que decirnos.

Es una pena, considerando que Cooper hizo un performance estupendo como Leonard Bernstein, y, que si bien prefiero otros roles más sutiles como a Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer), Leonardo DiCaprio (KOTFM) o incluso Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), una nominación al Oscar sería muy merecida.

Lo doloroso de todo el asunto es que dejando de lado la buena fotografía, las buenas actuaciones, la buena música y la buena edición, "Maestro" no tiene nada particularmente contundente que mostrarle a su audiencia.
