The Atypical Family (2024) [ENG/ESP]@yaslenysofia680d
ENGLISH
Greetings @movies&Tvshows community, I love to recommend k-dramas because the truth is, they contain incredible stories, mostly very good performances and that are intertwined with current situations. Today I come to talk about the drama The Atypical Family that, a couple of months ago ended; a plot with family nuances coupled with supernatural tones.
The Atypical Family (히어로는 아닙니다만)
With a release date of May 4, 2024, it was directed by Kim Cho Hyun-tak, created by Kang Eun-kyung, and is a romance, fantasy and drama film.
The Bok family is not the typical family of society, its members are born with certain superpowers, however, they have been losing them little by little due to problems of today's society: insomnia, depression, eating problems, and so on.
To cope with this problem, which has also harmed them economically, they turn to Do Da-hae, who, when involved with them, generates a change in them, giving them a ray of light not to lose what has been given to them for generations. But, not everything will be rosy, because this woman hides a secret of who she is, and, not only that, the relationship with this family may be much earlier. What fate awaits this atypical family? Will they manage to keep their powers?
It is a drama that has a social and deep background, dark, funny and mysterious are the characteristics with which I can demarcate it. At the moment you think it is boring and slow, it will surprise you with the plot twists that it brings with it, making you come up with thousands of theories about past and future events in it, mixing different emotions in the viewer.
We have a melancholic love, themes with bullying, depression, alcoholism and many more that, somehow you manage to connect with the characters and immerse yourself in their past; learn from human pain and feel compassion for them. It also teaches you that good memories will always be there, you should not stay in yesterday but in the present, enjoy them and get the best of what has already happened, which many times depression does not let you visualize.
I love the fact that, beyond focusing on the powers that this family has, it focuses on the coexistence between the members of a family circle, the tolerance towards each other and, above all, the understanding that must exist, because without it, the nucleus that maintains this bond will gradually crumble.
The execution of the story and the coherence of one event with another. The chemistry between the protagonists, where many say there was not, but we are used to the youthful romance that, when we see one that seeks to break the barriers of the past and overcome internal pains, traced in a more subtle affection, it may seem a little heavy.
It is a different story with social and family nuances well endowed with a well-dynamic plot, so I recommend watching it.

The Atypical Family (히어로는 아닙니다만)

I love movies about superpowers and I think that's one of the few things that would draw me in to see any country movie aside Korean series lol. It has become a habit for me to see at least one kdrama every week, and I decide which to do a review for. Sadly, not all make it to my review list because they turn out to be less than expected or over hyped by those who recommend them.
This series "The Atypical Family" made it to my review list for so many reasons and it's highly recommended to anyone who would love all I'm going to mention about it especially super powers hehe.
A 12 episode series released in May 2024, hopefully there will be no season two.
Honestly, I never liked the title of this drama and I still don't like it even after I'm done seeing it. If you ask me why, I can't say any reason, I just never liked it and it was one of the reason it took this long for me to see it after it's release and amidst the hype in comments. What drew me in then?
I came across a scene in the series on YouTube shorts that caught my attention totally and I had to download to watch immediately. The characters, the storyline, the super but not heroes, I got hooked till the end so here I am writing a review from my experience.
A family blessed with super powers, mother (can dream of the future), son (can go back to his past happy moments), daughter (can fly) and a granddaughter who later (could read someone's thought with her eyes). This family began to lose their power as modern day changes happen to them... Mother (Insomnia), Son (Depression), and Daughter (Obesity).
A young lady gets involved with the family and somehow, they began to reconnect to their super powers again but not as before. It also shows the lady's family who are after the wealth of the atypical family without the knowledge of them having superpowers.
I love how good the story developed and the changes in their powers they experienced, it made viewers not able to guess much what happens next. And there were a lot of suspense with what really happened before the Son of the house became depressed (one interesting side of the story, I must say).
My all time favourite in this series has got to be about the granddaughter, her super power, her invisible life in school and her cute love life with one of my favourite child actor character.
Park So-Yi is a child actor in Korean movies and series that I've come to love so much, she's so good with her roles especially in the "See You In My 19th Life" series where I first saw her. The role she took on this "The Atypical Family" was so refreshing to watch, as she acted out very differently from what I know her to be.
Her crush in this series Moon Woo-Jin also caught my attention too, he played in the last series I reviewed "Castaway Diva" and he didn't change much in the kind of roles he took on this one. The story of this two added sweet flavour to the storyline for me, they were a good break from all the suspense in the family story.
I also love the father daughter relationship that played out in this series, not the perfect kind but just okay and close to reality. There are other characters that gave comedy, action and crazy breaks in this series to make it worth your time even more.
I read somewhere that there may be a second season and I'm guessing it's because of how it ended which to me, it's as perfect as it could have been. We don't have to know what happens after but just agree there would be more savings with their regained superpowers and they'll be able to meet up with the modern day changes as they've learnt their lessons.
It is a good watch and I'll suggest you see it, short enough to see it in a day or two. Let me know what you think about the series if you decide to check it out.
›The Atypical Family || Series Review@oluchi31691d
It's been a while since I watched a drama. I mean watched a complete kdrama. It's been a while since I did that. Don't get me wrong. I've been watching other movies. Just not K-dramas. And then, yesterday, I was in the mood to watch a drama. I scrolled through the dramas I already had and I came across The Atypical Family.
This movie since it aired, had been in my To be Watched list but I kept from watching it for a while for some reasons. Still, I looked forward to when I'll get to watch it and yesterday, while I was looking for a K-drama to watch, I came across it once again and decided to watch it.
Another thing that fuelled my decision to watch it was the way a friend of mine had talked about how interesting the series seemed.
Although I'm not really keen on hype, I took her seriously because it's the first time she actually recommended a series to me. So, I watched The Atypical Family and I was totally engrossed.
The Series is a total of 12 episodes, each with a run-time of 70minutes. It stars actors Jang Kiyong (Bok Gwi-ju), Park So Yi(Bok I-na), Chun Woo Hee(Do da-hae), Ko Du-shim(Mrs. Bok)
The first episode opens with the Bok family sitting on a cliff, overlooking the beach. Mrs Bok (the mother) complaining about how the family is doomed if nobody in the family can use their powers anymore. Each member of the family has a superpower but they all lost their powers to different modern day diseases. For instance, Bok Gwi-Ju who has the power to go back to his happy moments in the past is too depressed after he lost his wife to go into the past. Bok Dong-hee, Gwi-ju's sister lost her ability to fly when she became obese. Mrs Bok who has the power to see the future in her dreams is down with insomnia. Therefore she can't sleep to dream about the future.
In the midst of her complaints, Gwi-ju disappears. The whole family thinks he got his power back but after a while, they see someone being dragged out of the water. They all run towards the other side of the river and see Gwi-ju being dragged out of the water. He actually dived in. He didn't go into the past. He is resuscitated by a young lady (Do da-hae) and mistakes her for his dead wife and hugs her deeply. His family walks into this scene and his mother begins to look forward to his marriage with the mysterious girl but she forgot to get the girl's contact.
The next week, Mrs Bok goes to a spa looking for a masseuse that will help her sleep. Surprisingly, after getting a massage, she sleeps off. She wakes up and requests for the masseuse and sees that it's the same girl that saved her son on the beach that day. She begins to invite Do da-hae over to the house in hopes that her son will fall in love with her and maybe no longer be depressed. Meanwhile, Do da-hae's plan is to scam the family of their money.
Things begin to go awry when Do da-hae finds out that Gwi-ju's daughter (Bok I-na) has the ability to read minds by looking into one's eyes. Although the whole family isn't aware of I-na's power. Even her dad, as he is too busy drinking than be bothered about her welfare. I-na is the first to discover Do da-hae's plans but instead of disclosing it to her family, she's quiet about it saying Do da-hae needs to teach her grandmother a lesson for being so obsessed with superpowers.
During the time Do da-hae starts to live with the Bok's, Gwi-ju begins to turn a new leaf when he discovers that he can now return to the past once again. But he can only return to the past where Da-hae is present. More like his happy moments with Da-hae. Also, Do da-hae's plan to scam the family starts dwindling when she begins to catch feelings for Gwi-Ju.

Now, my review about the series.
I totally enjoyed the series. Firstly, the female lead was really smart. Her manipulation techniques were topnotch and she delivered it well. Also, Park So Yi who acted as I-na did justice to her role. I loved her character so much. To me, she was the highlight of the series. From her relationship with her father to that with her boyfriend, I loved it all. I've watched her in other dramas and she is very very talented. At this point, I think she's one of my favourite child actresses.
Also, I loved the cinematography, the uniqueness of the plot, the character development and how the series progressed. It wasn't too fast, neither was it too slow.
Although I can't say the same for the ending which seemed rushed. Apart from the fact that it seemed rushed, it was baseless. In the last fifteen minutes of the series, it felt like I was watching something else entirely with the same characters from the initial series. It left me confused how the tables suddenly turned. This was really disheartening.
Did I enjoy the series? Yes. I totally enjoyed it notwithstanding the fact that it had flying as a superpower (I hate when characters fly. It's cringe 😂). Now, I can tick it off my To be Watched list. Yayyy!!!
Well, I'll give the series a rating of 3.9/5. Lesser points due to the unsatisfying ending. If you are looking for a drama that is intriguing and soft, this drama is definitely for you (That's if you're okay with watching dramas with dissatisfying endings).
