The Beyond is an Italian horror movie from the 80s and it looked interesting enough for me to watch. I haven't seen many Italian movies, especially from the horror genre but I do recall seeing at least 2 movies by Dario Argento, Suspiria, and Inferno. In recent months I was expecting to watch what I thought was a cool horror Italian series from Netflix called Curon but ultimately decided not to watch it due to its bad reviews.
So this movie, The Beyond, is probably the third Italian horror production I have seen and I am happy to say it fulfilled my expectations. Given the fact this is an old movie, around 40 years old, I was expecting it to look a bit dated but it was the way the plot is unfolded what interested me the most.
The story is about a woman who inherits a small hotel but it is not in a good state. It requires a lot of work in order to make it operative and start renting the rooms so the new owner decides to do just that, to renovate it and hopefully turn it into a successful hotel. The first scene is will show us that bad things have happened in this hotel but since all of this bad stuff happened several decades ago, the new owner doesn't have a clue about its dark past.
Slowly but surely, weird and violent events will begin to happen involving people related to the hotel. The explanation behind all of this evilness is that the hotel has one of 7 doors in existence that connects directly with hell. This is a paranormal place that can be easily overcome with evil energy and ghostly presences. So much so that it can even corrupt souls that were once good and peaceful.
The main character, the woman who now owns the hotel will become desperate to understand what is happening and everything will look like unexplainable craziness to her. There will be a lot of blood and extensive use of horror makeup. What I enjoyed the most is how serious the writers were regarding the severity of what is happening in this place. There are no silly twists or easy solutions for this evilness, it just devours everything. If you have seen the movie from 2016 called The Void and like that type of ending, this one has a similar one but less mystic and more diabolic.
If you are looking for a classic European horror film this could be a good watch, have in mind a lot of its horrors consist of just body-horror and it looks both disgusting and dated. There was even a scene with a few tarantulas and in some shots, they clearly look like fake spiders, it wasn't a deal-breaker for me but perhaps it could ruin the film for other people.
The best
- It goes all-in with a satisfactory ending instead of a half-cooked one.
- The plot explored is quite dark. I would love to see modern movies similar to this one.
The worst
- Its special effects will look dated to modern audiences.
- It uses a lot of body horror, which isn't something I enjoy very much.
