In Mississippi in 1995, a small businessman, owner of a family-owned funeral home, decides not to let himself go bankrupt and takes a large group in the same industry to court for breach of contract. But O’Keefe is not the only one looking for good lawyers because the opposing side when analyzing the situation, the geographical area they are in and the reasons why Willie Gary is in Mississippi, they also hire only dark race lawyers. It is a movie where this issue takes a lot of importance but even though it is something I had to mention and I feel it is racism but in an inverted way to what we are used to see and hear, I am not going to delve too much into this issue.

Ahora bien, cómo llega Wille Gary interpretado magistralmente por Jamie Foxx a convertirse en su abogado. Pues resulta que Gary es un abogado mediático de Florida, especializado en casos que no tienen nada que ver con contratos. Es una película donde este tema toma mucha importancia pero aunque es algo que tenía que mencionar y siento que es racismo pero de una manera invertida a lo que estamos acostumbrados a ver y escuchar, no voy a ahondar demasiado en este tema.

Ver a dos ganadores de un Oscar actuar en una misma película en donde ambos son los protagonistas son cosas que raramente pasan; este es el caso de The Burial, un film en donde veremos lo mejor Jamie Foxx y de Tommy Lee Jones. Ya de por si ese par de nombres deslumbran cuando decides darle una oportunidad a la película, en mi caso no leí sinopsis ni nada antes de verla pero sabía que fuera cual fuese la trama iba a ser de calidad, y miren, no me equivoque. Últimamente me estaba dando por ver cosas muy mainstream, cosas que estaban en la conversación constante por lo que buscaba montarme en esa ola de opinión pero extrañamente no entiendo como no se está hablando de este film, para mi de los mejores que he visto en el año.

Seeing two Oscar winners acting in the same movie where both are the main characters are things that rarely happen; this is the case of The Burial, a film where we will see the best of Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones. Comprar un ataúd puede ser una verdadera pesadilla financiera para una familia que no tenga los recueros y esa es parte de la problemática expuesta aquí también. El film es una mezcla de la falta de escrúpulos con la lucha constante contra el hecho de ser de un color de piel en especifico.

La trama es simple pero es que es basado en algo que sucedió, acá no hay giros. Lo que realmente destaca son las interpretaciones de los personajes. Jamie Foxx es espectacular, la capacidad que tiene para transmitir es muy top, es un actor que contagia y da muchas ganas de ver actuar, sin dudas es el motor del film, sobre él va la película. Tommy Lee Jones a pesar de su edad hay que decir que estuvo sobrio, lúcido, una actuación tranquila pero eficaz; no pierde la magia, sigue siendo un actor de primera. Y en cuanto a los personajes secundarios destaco a dos: a Mame Downes (Jurnee Smollett), la abogada defensora y a Alan Ruck (Mike Alrred), el primer abogado de Jerry. Muy buenas actuaciones de ese par. De hecho todo el elenco estuvo muy bueno, nada negativo que decir acerca de ellos.

In fact the whole cast was very good, nothing negative to say about them.

Sinceramente le doy un 8.5/10. Me sorprendió mucho este film, no esperaba que me gustara tanto, como mencioné, es de lo mejor que he visto este año. Actuaciones solidas, eso es en todo lo que se resume esta película, sin más. Está disponible en Prime Video, se las recomiendo mucho, vale la pena cada minuto. Mr. Loewen offers to buy 3 of Jerry's funeral homes for 7 million dollars, Jerry accepts and they let the deal be closed by his employees, however, after a month the purchase does not materialize and the Mississippi state commerce commission pressures Jerry to fulfill his commitments.

Mike el abogado acuerda una reunion con el posible comprador Raymond Loewen (Bill Camp) quién manera una mega corporación que servicios funerarios en todo el pais. El Sr Loewen ofrece comprar 3 de las funerarias de Jerry por 7 millones de dólares, este acepta y dejan que el trato sea cerrado por sus empleados, sin embargo, luego de un mes la compra no se concreta y la comisión de comercio del estado de Misisipi presiona a Jerry para cumplir con sus compromisos.

Jerry believes that this is a breach of the agreement, so he hires the young lawyer Hal Dockins (Mamoudou Athie) who assures him that the lack of response from the Loewen Corporation is forcing Jerry's funeral homes to go bankrupt, forcing them to sell much cheaper. Jerry wants to sue him because he interprets it as an attack on his heritage, which he wishes to leave as an inheritance to his descendants.

Jerry cree que esto es un incumplimineto del acuerdo, por eso contrata al joven abogado Hal Dockins (Mamoudou Athie) quien le asegura que la falta de respuesta de parte de la corporación Loewen lo que procura es que las funerarias de Jerry quiebren obligando a vender mucho mas económico. Jerry quiere demandarle porque lo interpreta como un atentado a su patrimonio, lo que el desea dejar como herencia a su descendencia.

The young lawyer, Hal Dockins, urges Jerry to hire another lawyer to help them with the litigation, because Mississippi is a state with a large presence of people of color, and his lawyer of 30 years ago, a white man, is unlikely to gain the sympathy of the jury. Hal recommends Jerry hire Willie E. Gary (Jamie Foxx), a quirky Florida lawyer.

El joven abogado Hal Dockins, insta al Jerry a contratar a otro abogado que les ayude con el litigio, porque Misisipi es un estado con gran presencia de personas de color, y su abogado de hace 30 años, un hombre blanco difícilmente logre la simpatía del jurado. Hal le recomienda a Jerry contratar a Willie E. Gary (Jamie Foxx) un abogado de la Florida muy peculiar.

The lawyer Willie is an ambitious, ostentatious, money-loving man with a very marked personality, who is not dedicated to contractual litigation but accepts this case for the amount of money and fame it can bring him, however, in the process he discovers that this is above his ambitions, manages to sympathize with Jerry's case and they strike up a great friendship.

El abogado Willie es un hombre ambicioso, ostentoso, amante del dinero, con una personalidad muy marcada, que no se dedica a litigios contractuales pero que acepta este caso por la cantidad de dinero y fama que le puede brindar, sin embargo, en el proceso descubre que esto está por encima de sus ambiciones, logra simpatizar con el caso de Jerry y entablan una gran amistad.

A case of contract or racism

The racial theme is very present in this film, what begins as a business litigation, ends up involving the struggle of the underdog against the most powerful, especially the African American communities that were enslaved in Mississippi, as unhealthy acts of the corporation involved with the black Baptist church are unveiled.

El tema racial está muy presente en esta película, lo que empieza pareciendo será un litigio por un negocio, termina involucrando la lucha de los desvalidos contra los mas poderosos, en especial las comunidades afroamericanas que fueron esclavizadas en Misisipi, ya que se develan actos malsanos de la corporación involucrada con la iglesia bautista negra.

It is where the case takes on greater importance for the lawyer Willie E. Gary (Jamie Foxx), since he himself has been a victim of the system because of his skin color, that led him to become a lawyer, driving fights for his people, and although this time he defends a white man, the corporation against which they fight, has taken advantage of the poverty of the colored community.

Es donde el caso toma mayor importancia para el abogado Willie E. Gary (Jamie Foxx), ya que el mismo a sido víctima del sistema por su color de piel, eso lo llevó a ser abogado, impulsando a luchas por su gente, y aunque en esta ocasión defiende a un hombre blanco, la corporación contra la que luchan, se ha aprovechado de la pobreza de la comunidad de color.

Drama or comedy

I was saying that at the beginning the movie made me feel thankful, Jaime Foxx's performance full of charisma gives the impression that his character is exaggerated on purpose, in order to give him a touch of humor. I don't know how much you think like me but I associate Foxx more with comedy, I find it hard to appreciate his serious roles, I think he has a great talent for that.

Decía que en un principio la película me causó gracias, la actuación de Jaime Foxx llena de mucho carisma da la impresión que su personaje es exagerado a propósito, a fin de darle un toque de humor. No se cuanto piense igual que yo pero a Foxx lo asocio mas con comedia, me cuesta apreciar sus papeles serios, creo que tiene un gran talento para eso.

So when the film gets into the story and the more serious events, and Foxx's character adopts a dramatic posture, it's hard to take him seriously, at least for me, but the passion he brings to the task of facing the jury or presenting the case to the judge is worthy of the stereotypical behavior of black people in that country, and he does it incredibly well.

Por eso luego cuando la película se adentra en la historia y en lo hechos mas serios, y el personaje de Foxx adopta una postura dramática, cuenta tomarlo en serio, por lo menos para mi, sin embargo, la pasión que le imprime al momento de enfrentar el jurado o presentar el caso ante el juez es digna de los estereotipos de comportamiento de las personas de color de ese pais, lo hace increiblemente bien.

I think the film is quite entertaining, however, I understand that although it is based on real events, including the O'keefe Vs. Loewen case, much of the facts have been modified in order to make it entertaining. Some characters, characterizations, incidents, locations and dialogue are fiction which explains the way Foxx's character is approached.

Creo que la película es bastante entretenida, sin embargo, entiendo que aunque se basa en hechos reales, incluyendo el caso O'keefe Vs. Loewen, buena parte de los hechos han sido modificados a fin de hacerlo entretenido. Algunos personajes, caracterizaciones, incidentes, lugares y diálogos son ficción lo cual explica la forma de abordar el personaje de Foxx.

The film is originally based on the article written by Jonathan Harr published by The New Yorker on October 24, 1999, titled The Burial, as well as the film, which deals with the O'keefe Vs. Loewen legal litigation, but mainly highlights the figure of lawyer Willie Gary, for his flamboyance, his achievements, especially his career as a self-made lawyer, and how popular he was, a different movie that can be a good family plan.

La película se basa originalmente en el artículo escrito por Jonathan Harr publicado por The New Yorker el 24 de octubre de 1999, dicho artículo lleva por titulo The Burial, al igual que la película, donde se aborda el litigio legal O'keefe Vs. Loewen, pero resalta principalmente la figura del abogado Willie Gary, por su extravagancia, por sus logros, en especial su carrera como abogado hecha por sí mismo, y lo popular que fue, una película diferente y que puede ser un buen plan familiar.
