It has been a while since the last time I saw a good political drama. This is a type of film that I only started to enjoy around 4 or 5 years ago, before that I usually considered them boring films and disliked them for the most part.
I guess it is normal for our likes to change with time, and to learn how to appreciate new forms of art as we become more mature. Another thing that interested me about this film, was that it approaches the topic of the Soviet Union, and how dangerous it was for the people inside that country.
I haven't watched many productions about the Soviet Union, most films that explore the political terrors of the 20th century are about the Nazis and mostly ignore the Soviets. However, there have been a few good productions such as the Chernobyl series from HBO, and several films like Citizen X and Mr. Jones that provide the viewer with a glimpse of how horrible the lives of the Soviet citizens really were. The Courier is a film that can be added to this small list.
Main names associated with the film
Most of the cast was completely unknown to me but the main actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, is extremely popular mainly thanks to his participation in the Avengers films playing Doctor Strange. However, this actor has many more important productions and even if I only mention the most important ones the list would be extensive, so a handful of his previous films that I have enjoyed in the past are Brexit, the series Sherlock, The Imitation Game, and The Fifth Estate.
The quality of the films where Cumberbatch participates has been getting better in the past few years. I think there was a big turn in his career after he played Julian Assange in the Fifth Estate movie, because since that year, he started to get better and better roles.
The other cast member I could recognize was Jessie Buckley thanks to one of her previous films called I am Thinking of Ending Things, which was a super weird movie but that's mainly the reason why I remember it. In The Courier, she plays a secondary character, the wife of the main character and she does it nicely.
The director is Dominic Cooke who isn't very active and he has only 2 previous productions worth mentioning, a film called On Chesil Beach, and a series called The Hollow Crown where he directed 3 episodes. The Courier is his most important production so far.
Ha pasado un tiempo desde la última vez que vi un buen drama político. Este es un tipo de película que solo comencé a disfrutar hace 4 o 5 años, antes de eso, generalmente las consideraba películas aburridas y no me gustaban en su mayor parte.
Supongo que es normal que nuestros gustos cambien con el tiempo y que aprendamos a apreciar nuevas formas de arte a medida que maduramos. Otra cosa que me interesó de esta película fue que aborda el tema de la Unión Soviética y lo peligrosa que era para la gente de ese país.
No he visto muchas producciones sobre la Unión Soviética, la mayoría de las películas que exploran los terrores políticos del siglo XX tratan sobre los nazis y en su mayoría ignoran a los soviéticos. The writer, Tom O'Connor, is also a person with no many previous productions in his career. He wrote a film called Fire with Fire, which is one of those films where the main attraction is just the presence of Bruce Willis and The Hitman's Bodyguard which was a great hit. The Courier is also a great film so I would consider this a hit for him as well.
As we can see, this is a film that has an actor with extensive experience, but a director and writer who are just beginning to build up their list of great works. However, as I would explain in the paragraphs below, The Courier was a great film and one they should all be proud of.
What was the movie about?
The film takes place during the Cold War. There was a constant fear of the United States and the Soviet Union destroying each other with nuclear weapons and destroying the planet in the process. No one wanted this to happen but the fact there were nuclear missiles pointing in each other directions was very alarming for everyone.
The main actor, Benedict Cumberbatch, plays a character called Greville Wynne. He was a normal British businessman who traveled around several countries to fulfill his jobs and one day, he is approached by real spies from both his country as well as America, and they ask him to help them in obtaining information from inside the Soviet Union.
Wynne wasn't a spy, so he had no idea how to do this but the real spies and the Soviet source called Oleg Penkovski thought he could use his work as a businessman like a cover. He would travel to the Soviet Union, pretend to do some "business" with Penkovski as a client, and he would receive the secret documents that he would then take back to London.
During all of this journey, he would be extremely stressed, nervous, and even scared but he needed to pretend everything was all right, otherwise, the Soviets totalitarians would discover something is going on. The film shows several times how nervous he really was while doing all of this.
Both Wynne and Penkovski had normal families but the potential impact they could have in stopping the destruction of the world through nuclear weapons was worth the risk. The documents Wynne took to London were related to the missiles the Soviets were strategically putting in Cuba. As some of you might know, Cuba has been a socialist country for several decades and it has cost their people pretty much everything they had. They are now a very impoverished country with no way out of it, and everything started with them deciding to join the socialist revolution along with the Soviets.

The film is based on real-life events and characters so the story is already known, however, I prefer to not say more about it to avoid important spoilers. I would only add that the film has very intense scenes in the second part, and some moments are portrayed perfectly.
How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?
I loved how the characters were portrayed in this film. Benedict Cumberbatch did an awesome job with his character, and even during the emotional moments, he does everything great. His character obviously goes through several emotional turmoils throughout the film, and the entire performance from him was completely believable. I am actually surprised how this guy manages to portray such strong emotions. However, I think this was exaggerated in some scenes, especially in one that takes place inside a theater. If you are watching this film after reading this post, notice how emotional he is in the theater and decide for yourself if that emotional state makes sense? For me, it didn't.
The settings were acceptable. The ugly part of the Soviet Union isn't shown because the 2 characters doing business have their meetings in Moscow, so everything looks nice and elegant for the most part. This is probably how things looked for VIP visitors in the Soviet Union, everything ugly was hidden from them. One of the films I mentioned before, Mr. Jones, explores this topic even further.
The camera work was very nice. There are some scenes in the second half of the film where the camera work was key to increase the intensity in the viewer. During the first half of the film, everything felt just regular, but during the second half, the direction and camera work starts to shine and everything gets better.
Final thoughts
This was one of the best political dramas I have seen in recent times. I absolutely loved the story and the performance of the main actor. I like that it explores some of the horrors of living in the Soviet Union because not many people realize how bad this country really was.
I would recommend this movie to anyone interested in either a good political drama or an interesting film about espionage. Have in mind this isn't an action film, its genres are drama and thriller. In my opinion, the fact this was all based on real-life makes everything even more worth watching.
La película está basada en hechos y personajes de la vida real por lo que la historia ya se conoce, sin embargo, prefiero no decir más sobre ella para evitar spoilers importantes. Solo agregaría que la película tiene escenas muy intensas en la segunda parte, y algunos momentos están perfectamente retratados.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco, la ambientación y el trabajo de cámara?
Me encantó cómo se retrataron los personajes en esta película. Benedict Cumberbatch hizo un trabajo increíble con su personaje, e incluso durante los momentos emocionales, hace todo muy bien. Su personaje obviamente atraviesa varios trastornos emocionales a lo largo de la película, y toda su actuación fue completamente creíble. La configuración fue aceptable. La parte fea de la Unión Soviética no se muestra porque los 2 personajes que hacen negocios tienen sus reuniones en Moscú, por lo que todo se ve bonito y elegante en su mayor parte. Probablemente así es como se veían las cosas para los visitantes VIP en la Unión Soviética, todo lo feo se les ocultaba. Una de las películas que mencioné antes, Mr. Jones, explora este tema aún más.
El trabajo de cámara estuvo bien. Hay algunas escenas de la segunda mitad de la película donde el trabajo de la cámara fue clave para aumentar la intensidad en el espectador. Durante la primera mitad de la película, todo se sintió normal, pero durante la segunda mitad, la dirección y el trabajo de cámara comienzan a brillar y todo mejora.
Reflexiones finales
Este fue uno de los mejores dramas políticos que he visto en los últimos tiempos. Me encantó la historia y la actuación del actor principal. Me gusta que explora algunos de los horrores de vivir en la Unión Soviética porque no mucha gente se da cuenta de lo malo que era realmente este país.
Recomendaría esta película a cualquier persona interesada en un buen drama político o en una película interesante sobre espionaje. Tenga en cuenta que esta no es una película de acción, sus géneros son el drama y el thriller. En mi opinión, el hecho de que todo esto se basara en la vida real hace que todo sea aún más digno de ver.
