  1. El día que la Tierra explotó: Una película de Looney Tunes / The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie (2024): Movie Review@miguelpeliculas384d

Before we begin, the first thing I have to say is that this film is an ode to the Looney Tunes animations of yesteryear, the ones I watched as a kid that were fearless, showcasing madness and explosions—basically the essence of these short films. But beyond that, they manage to make us fall in love with the characters all over again, making Daffy Duck once again a demented, arrogant, and unhinged character, while Porky, having not undergone many personality changes in recent years, remains faithful to the vision I've had since my childhood.

With so many failed projects like the Space Jam remake starring LeBron James, this film feels like a breath of fresh air for the franchise. As I mentioned, they returned to the essence of these characters, using many classic elements and adding references to current culture while maintaining their irreverence. We can clearly see this at the beginning of the film, where, in the parade of jobs the two take to try to save their home, Lucas tries to be an influencer, pumping up his buttocks and twerking to make a name for himself on social media, failing in the process.

In addition to all the comedy we see, which often interrupts deeper or romantic scenes with a joke, the emotional aspect is also well developed, which achieves an initial immersion in the story. In the first act, we are told the story of Daffy and Porky as babies and how they were rescued by Farmer Jim, or Juan if you watch it with Spanish audio, developing their relationship very well. I thought the animation was top-notch, as it looks practically perfect and immaculate, a nod to how many of us view our parents.

Now, turning to the animation, I really liked it. There are many really beautiful scenes and landscapes, combined with the typical exaggerated gestures of the Looney Tunes, creating a good contrast, although there are also some shots that were not given that much attention. Something I think was missing, although it doesn't affect the plot or the development of the story at all, and which I would have liked, is a cameo by some of the classic characters, especially Marvin the Martian, who would have fit very well in this alien story.

As for the story's development, the two protagonists are very based on what we already knew about them, which is a plus, while Petunia is pure sweetness and oddity, which is why she fits very well with Porky, giving meaning to their love affair. The villain's motivations are very unfounded, as we later realize he's really an antihero, since what he wanted was to save the planet, combining with the general madness. And finally, Farmer Jim is everything good in the world, being the one who gives the protagonists their purpose.

Another thing I thought was a good fit was the film's pacing, which moved the story along quickly. Combined with the comedy—both the gags and the physical comedy based on crazy gadgets and measured violence—it kept me on the couch enjoying myself for a good while, as well as letting out a few laughs. The animation was excellent throughout most of its runtime, though there were moments where it fell short, and while this isn't often something to be criticized too emphatically, I do feel that perhaps the budget was a bit short.

In conclusion, the movie really made me feel a bit nostalgic. I would have liked to see more Looney Tunes, but overall, it was okay. There are a lot of things that don't make sense, but coming from these characters, it's not something to complain about too much, lol. I would blindly recommend it to any fan of the franchise who wants to relive their childhood. Plus, it has a message behind it that's very necessary for this age I'm at: my home, my happy place, something that both Porky and Daffy fight to maintain.

I don't know what I find more surprising: the fact that "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie" is the first fully animated Looney Tunes theatrical foray, or that Pete Browngardt managed to make it work so well without any prior frame of reference.

And while I appreciate the value that films like Space Jam and Looney Tunes Back in Action provided at the time, as representative pieces of the edgy, meta-narrative culture that swept the world in the 1990s, the weight of their live-action co-stars made them feel more like desperate experiments to make iconic characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, or Porky Pig work in a "modern" setting, rather than works created to celebrate the powerful legacy they left in pop culture.

Ironically, within its narrative simplicity, The Day the Earth Blew Up is the work that comes closest to achieving this, capable of engaging the viewer in a story lasting almost an hour and a half, managing an impeccable pace that mixes the slapstick we usually expect from animated shorts with a plot that's a bit denser than usual.

The result? Breaking the old stigma that these characters function only in a short film format, taking advantage of the available resources to create a simple, fun film with a timeless and beautiful level of animation.

The Day the Earth Blew Up is presented to us as a spin-off of "Looney Tunes Cartoons," a series produced by Browngardt himself and exclusive to HBO Max. This time, we follow Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, who grew up together and this time must save the Earth from a strange alien seeking to take over the world using chewing gum.

This absurd premise is nothing more than a driving force for a series of gags in which all the characters involved shine in almost equal measure, blending their more traditional elements with a modern framing (without resorting to the tricks of the previous films). It's a very entertaining film, and certainly deserves a chance.

The film comes from the already notable series of Looney Tunes Cartoons shorts with this same team at the helm and shares with it the desire to return the characters to their original period, that is, to the era of directors such as Tex Avery, Frank Tashlin and, above all, Bob Clampett, while Space Jam and Back in Action focused more on the style of Chuck Jones.

The film succeeds in paying homage to Clampett, one of the most energetic directors of the Looney Tunes, and gives back to Daffy Duck his unhinged personality of that first stage, somewhat different from the unlucky, self-centred and envious duck he used to be in Chuck Jones' shorts.

Porky has not had so many variations in his personality but he has been a Looney Tunes character somewhat forgotten in favour of Bugs Bunny and who, nevertheless, works even better as Lucas' companion than the famous rabbit.

The film also succeeds in achieving an emotional involvement with the characters without getting cheesy or abandoning the gags.

Interestingly, although there are jokes during almost every sentimental moment, this doesn't make them seem false or cynical either. The other great thing is the pacing and the way it strings together different homages to the sci-fi sub-genre.

This film comes at a time when we all need to recover our lost childhood and innocence. Looking back, recognising ourselves in the mirror and evolving to be better people is always very necessary, and to be reminded of this in this film, both through the story and its characters, is a real achievement.

The laughter, the smiles, the craziness of the characters, the values that they transmit and the vitality that this film displays make that, although it is focused on children, we adults become children and remember those moments where happiness had NO end and marked us to live a better life.

There is a concept that fits them like a glove, especially for those of us who are starting to feel displaced by the new generations: The ‘happy place’.

Cartoons of this kind are a ‘happy place’ to escape from the chores of modern life; whether you have a child around... or not. Pure, simple, honest fun for children aged one to twenty-something.
