  1. Film Review: The Devil Wears Prada (2006)@drax686d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Experienced viewers should know not to trust the Hollywood hype. When the film promises to be a brutal satire that would do to the fashion industry what Altman’s The Player did to Hollywood, there are good reasons to be sceptical. This is the case with The Devil Wears Prada, a 2006 film directed by David Frankel.

The plot is based on the eponymous 2003 best-selling novel by Lauren Weisberger, a young American writer who found inspiration in her own traumatic experiences as an assistant to Anna Wintour, the tyrannical editor-in-chief of Vogue fashion magazine. In the film, just like in the novel, her fictionalised alter ego is Andrea “Andy” Sachs (played by Anne Hathaway), an aspiring writer who is forced to take a job at Runway fashion magazine as the assistant to the monstrously demanding editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly (played by Meryl Streep). Sachs despises fashion, all those who follow it, and especially her vacuous magazine colleagues for whom physical appearance is the only thing that matters. However, over time, influenced by Miranda's friendly assistant Nigel (played by Stanley Tucci), Andrea transforms from an ugly duckling into a swan and begins to enjoy the fashion world more and more, even as she starts to drift away from her boyfriend Nate (played by Adrian Grenier).

After dozens of screenwriters and anonymous script doctors worked on the film adaptation of the novel, it may not be too surprising that the sharp satire and critique of contemporary culture from the literary source was turned into a lukewarm romantic comedy. The fact that Anna Wintour herself was pleased with the film shows how benign and pro-establishment it is. Things become even clearer when one considers that the most prestigious fashion houses participated in the film's costumes, making The Devil Wears Prada the record-holder for the highest costume budget in history.

This is not surprising, given that both Hollywood and the global fashion industry have too much in common – primarily the acquisition of wealth through the sale of often worthless goods that consumers do not actually need – and that criticism of one would be understood as indirect criticism of the other. Therefore, all “problematic” details were removed from the film – the protagonist's Jewish heritage, Nigel's sexual orientation (since it is not convenient to remind the audience who dominates the fashion industry), as well as accusations against the fashion industry for promoting anorexia.

However, even with those limitations, The Devil Wears Prada could have worked as a mildly entertaining film. Unfortunately, like the heroine, Frankel’s film is torn between its intent to be a satirical exploration of the fashion industry on one side and celebrating it on the other. The result is a comedy without much humour, a satire that is bland to non-existent, and a message that is telegraphed in such an inefficient and repetitive way that it makes the film feel overlong.

The Devil Wears Prada is watchable mainly due to its cast. It became the most successful of the films starring Anne Hathaway, one of the more promising Hollywood actresses at the start of the 21st century. Her work in this film was overshadowed not only by the notoriously dependable Meryl Streep, who plays the film's anti-heroine with ease, but also by Emily Blunt in the role of Andy’s fashion-obsessed colleague in the editorial office.

Despite its more than obvious flaws, The Devil Wears Prada was a huge commercial success and received mostly positive reviews. Whether the viewers find this justified or not generally depends on how they perceive the film’s subject itself.

  2. We have "Devil wears Prada" at home.... Upgraded@richardalexis845d

    ENGLISH

Although in a sea of generic romcoms "Upgraded" is far from breaking the mold, we must recognize that Amazon Prime's proposal with the beautiful Camila Mendes and Archie Renaux manages to provide us with an entertaining experience, this, obviously, a direct consequence of an ability to steal ideas and concepts from much more solid films within the genre such as Devil Wears Prada or the Intern, to mention the most obvious examples.

The problem? Nonexistent, depending on who you ask... Since despite the predictable nature of the story that is being told (A young New York girl has a unique opportunity in Europe and meets the love of her life there) it is undeniable that It manages to hook its viewers, something that is largely due to a solid cast of secondary characters.

There are interesting decisions, especially because (beyond what all the advertising and posters could lead us to believe) the romance between the protagonists takes an almost secondary role during an important portion of the footage to instead focus on the juggling that the character of Camila (Ana) to do her job while maintaining an innocent lie that gets bigger and bigger.

Ironically, this makes Mendes' lack of chemistry with Renaux much more tolerable, but it leaves us wondering whether this relationship would have worked better (or not) if it were built on a script that would have given them more time to shine.

Upgraded is a harmless and forgettable film, with good ideas and fun moments. However, it fails to capture the timeless essence of all those films that it desperately seeks to replicate, taking inspiration from here and there without focusing too much on their logic and harmony with each other.

It disrespects its own characters to give us a "satisfying" ending and for some reason it feels very short and very long at the same time.

  3. CineTV Contest: My favorite movie about work is: The Devil Wears Prada -ENG / SPA-@iuliapetit27111332d

Hello dear cinephile friends! I hope you are very well, today I am very happy to join this wonderful contest of our friends from @CineTV and share with you my favorite movie about work, for which I chose "The Devil Wears Prada" from 2006 which is starring by Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway and I'll tell you why, so read on.

    NTy4GV6ooFRmaCXZ8UYgPhoud1kjiNX8QokLEZtbBKLuLWQ9yt7K3o4C4jRNxUYvshGNZHKEmijT54uqWp22f5SfrsrgJMB6bcKd82QjYmw7so8b6jKbVJv6hd5P8wz3MgPWAQr94XcnYzp7BP57vxq6QZbC3KpDWRbf6soC.png

I chose this film because I really like the world of fashion and also journalism, the film tells us about an aspiring journalist recently graduated, who goes to work as a personal assistant to Miranda Priestly, the cold and bad-tempered editor-in-chief of the Runaway magazine. I like this movie a lot because I personally would like to work in a fashion magazine, although I am not a journalist like the main protagonist, in my graphic design career I also studied editorial design and several of my class projects were designing various magazines so I would feel in paradise working on a magazine editorial and even more so if it is about fashion, since in addition to graphic design I love fashion design and everything that has to do with fashion.

Apart from what was stated before, I also chose this movie because I find it quite funny, despite the fact that the role of Meryl is that of a woman with a face of few friends and a bad character who spends her time with her mouth pursed in almost the entire movie, to I found it comical in its own way and I recognize that it does its job very well. I think that in real life having a boss like Miranda Priestly would represent a great challenge, but in my opinion the bosses who are so demanding and incondescending are the ones who really teach us to do our job well since they exploit our potential and we become experts within the company and although at first we don't see it that way, in the end we always end up realizing it and we can see that in the movie since at the beginning Andy when he came to work had zero knowledge about fashion AND THE MAGAZINE, but after for a time we see her more unwrapped.

I like working in the world of fashion a lot and for me it is quite exceptional, not only the world of fashion is designing and selling, fashion is also an art that you have to know how to handle quite broadly and passionately and I sincerely hope for more in the future study fashion, which I had started studying before switching to graphic design but I had to drop out because the academy I entered here in my city is fake so it would have been worth nothing since I would not get a real diploma. I really liked how they handle it in the film and more than anything in the magazine, since in the publishing world you really have to know what to put in order to create global trends that attract the attention of everyone who reads the magazine, its popularity grows and become important in the middle. To me it seems like a film in which this world of work is shown in a quite realistic way, although I cannot say for sure because I have not yet had the opportunity to work in a publishing house, however, I would like it and even more so if it is Fashion.

    Source

Let's say that the film fits perfectly with the idea that I have about working in a publishing house, I really like the way Meryl Streep interprets her character since she really looks quite imposing and like a fearsome boss, however when we studied we They said that the designers who choose the editorial branch and decide to exercise it, to really learn to move in that world, we really need a strict boss who brings out the best in us. I am not currently practicing graphic or editorial design, however I would like to have the opportunity to continue practicing it soon.

To finish, I would say that this film is one of the most personal for me since it unfolds in a world that I really like, the work of all the actors and the photography are really excellent, so this film is really a gem which Although it has been around for a long time, it is like good wine, so I am really happy and proud to choose it for this wonderful contest. Next, I leave the link of the contest in case you are encouraged to participate.

  4. The Devil Wears Prada (2006) review: when the cold meets the enticing.@richardalexis1738d

Devil Wears Prada is not only one of the funniest films of the early 2000s, but it manages to be at the same time one of the most representative films of that era, existing in a perfect limbo between timelessness and the cheesy aesthetic that characterized it.

Although it was not until recently that I decided to see it in its entirety, it is inevitable to ignore the impact it has had on our popular culture, from memes and abundant references to more recent works that seem inspired by it (As the notable case with Cruella at Disney this same ).

    Source

With a couple of minutes elapsed it is not difficult to understand why, The Devil Wears Prada moves with too much agility between being a typical comfort movie and feeling at the same time like an interesting satire to a world where arrogance and elegance are the key. everyday's bread.

Of course, all of this is driven by the brilliant performances of Anne Hathaway and the great Meryl Streep, who contrast with an impressive level of strength and respond to two totally different realities, Aliñe Brosh's script loosely based on Lauren's semi-biographical novel Weisberger knows how to handle them with a surgical precision that immerses us in this universe very effectively.

The comedy elements that sweeten what is mostly light drama are extremely well executed and never quite distracting, in terms of pacing and direction it is a brilliant and calculated play.

The argument? Many of you probably already know it by heart, we follow the story of Andrea (Andy Sachs) a young reporter who, due to things in life, ends up working as Miranda Priestly's assistant, a cold editor in one of the most prestigious fashion magazines in all the world.

This simple premise serves to present us with an elitist slice of New York reality, awash in expensive garments and visually appealing luxuries but with little or no substance.

The deep involvement of people from the world of fashion in real life is what ends up giving it that spark of “authenticity” that elevates Devil Wears Prada as a masterpiece, capable of circumventing this elitism while simultaneously approaching it with sincerity and genuine interest.

This last point (which has cost me a little to explain in words) is one of the most surprising aspects of the entire film, which decides to end in a bittersweet way for those who became fond of the perks of the fashionista world.

It is totally respectable that in mainstream cinema we have filmmakers making brave decisions (Although they may not seem like it), willing to create three-dimensional characters with conflicts that trap us and having the ability to take them to interesting places within their own internal logic.

I am very satisfied with - finally - having seen this great movie, I fully recommend it.
