  1. Another Captivating Historical Drama—Review Of The Empress (2022)@kemmyb996d

I read a recommendation of this 2022 German historical drama online and one thing the author failed to mention was that the series is in German, not English. I downloaded and when I settled down to binge-watch, I winced. It's in German. I don't do well with watching non-English movies because it means I'll have to rely on subtitles. I almost didn't see it but when I gave it a few minutes, it was captivating and I'm glad I watched it.

The Empress (2022) (also called Die Kaiserin in German) is a Netflix series based on the life of Elisabeth, Empress of Austria. The opening scene reveals a lady in a wedding gown, her face covered with a white lace veil as she walks down the aisle. In a flashback, a teenage girl called Sisi (played by Devrim Lingnau) is seen hiding behind the curtains as her mother, Princess Ludovika, yells her name. A duke had visited and wanted to see his potential bride but Sisi refused.

Her mother wishes Sisi could be more like her elder sister, Helene (played by Elisa Schlott) who is set to marry Franz Joseph (played by Philip Froissan), the Emperor of Austria. When Sisi, Helene and their mother travel to celebrate Franz's birthday, the emperor sees Sisi and likes her. Contrary to his mother's pressure, he asks for Sisi's hand in marriage and not Helene's.

This move is a shock to everyone at the court. While wedding preparations are made, Austria is facing threats on all sides to join the war while the lower class people are plotting to start a revolution. Will this young couple survive the pressures of politics, war and still stay in love with each other?

    Review

Contrary to my expectations, I enjoyed this TV series. The plot revolves around Elisabeth, Empress of Austria and her life at court. She ruled from 1854-1898. Watching this series was my first introduction to this monarch.

I see two unconventional people who want more out of life than the roles and responsibilities they are being forced to. Franz wants the freer life he had before his uncle died and he was made the emperor while Elisabeth simply wants her life to be filled with love, horse riding, writing her poems and of course, being able to express herself freely without the rules of society standing in the way.

The storytelling and character development is great. Every character stands out and from the first episode, it's easy to understand them. At the heart of this historical drama are romance, politics, rivalry and acrimony. The focus is on an impending revolution and the war with the Russians. Every episode is intriguing and compels me to watch the next episode immediately. So it's best to binge-watch this series to fully enjoy it.

Now to the cast's acting, Devrim Lingnau's performance as Elisabeth is outstanding. She gives life to this character and viewers catch a glimpse of the real person's life in court at that time. However, I'm not too sure about her chemistry with Philip Froissant who plays the emperor. He's stiff and very hard to read. Yet I don't mind Philip's acting because all eyes are on the Empress!

Johannes Nussbaum who plays Maximilian, the bold and crazy brother of Franz is convincing in his role. He's the black sheep of the family with clear intentions of taking the throne from his brother but his charms and beguiling smile make him likeable.

The cinematography, costumes and visuals are impressive. I mean, what's a historical drama with romance at its heart without some gorgeous royal flair?

Overall, I enjoyed watching The Empress and if there's going to be a second season, then I'll be looking forward to it. I'll rate this series 3.2 stars out of 5.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

  2. 🎥🎬 Mi Opinión Sobre: La Emperatriz 👸🏻👑 || 🎥🎬 My Opinion About: The Empress 👸🏻👑@kiutvariedades1021d
¡Hola queridos usuarios de Hive ✨💕!
    Hi dear Hive users ✨💕!

Did I tell you that I was re-watching the second season of Bridgerton? Well, with the constant power cuts it was so fast for me to finish it, but it was so fast that when I finished it left me that feeling of wanting to continue watching this kind of stories, so I downloaded this series that I will talk about today with the intention of watching it when I have no electricity, it turns out that yesterday I was two hours without electricity service and I took the opportunity to watch the first chapter, but my hook was such that I did not let go of the phone until I finished with the whole season 🤣🤣, and obviously I had to bring you a review of the German miniseries The Empress 👑.

This series basically focuses on the love story between the rebellious Elizabeth and Emperor Francis, who after their unexpected marriage must face all the complications of being the rulers of a nation that is not exactly well 🤣🤣, and the truth is that the people hate the whole royal family for quite understandable reasons, and one of the "solutions" that have been taken to appease this resentment has obviously been to carry out a big wedding 🤣. This engagement has a very particular beginning, because initially Francis was not going to marry Elizabeth but his older sister, but finally things happened differently, and I mention this detail without the distinction of spoiler, because an important fact of this project is that it is based on real life events (or at least a part of them, remember that this is fiction to some extent), and this detail of the engagement of the emperors of Austria, really happened like that 🤣.

Personally I came to this series without any previous information, that is to say no trailers or any media that could give me some context, and for this reason and based fully on the title I really thought that the protagonist was the monarch, and when they show us the glimpse of her in my head it was still like this, until they take us a little further back in the story and I see that maybe the idea I had of the series would be different, because in fact she really is the monarch consort, and this at first made me a little noise because I did not understand the reason to make believe by the title that she is the one who rules, but by the end it made a little sense to me 🤣. And speaking of our empress, Elizabeth is really a character that I liked a lot, although from the first moment I knew that she would suffer throughout the story, especially because the role of empress is a role for which she was not prepared, especially not prepared for the rules that this role requires, although many of them were absurd.

I'm not going to deny that I found Francisco and Isabel's relationship extremely tender, and as a good romantic obviously in several scenes I was smiling like a fool at the screen, but honestly Francisco seems like a coward most of the time (and the poor guy's family tells him that a lot) and if we're talking about chemistry, I think there was more chemistry between Isabel and Francisco's brother, who in fact spent the whole season wanting to take his brother's wife away from him and conspire against him as well, and although he was a character I didn't like at all, I must admit that he had more moments of connection with Isabel, in fact you even feel that he was a pillar of support for her, even when her own husband seemed to leave her aside 🤷🏻‍♀️. And this detail in fact is not part of any criticism of the performances or anything, because this dynamic at least for me reflects quite well the very marked rupture in the dynamics of this family, siblings looking for the other to fall, betrayals of different measures, not allowing the happiness of the other or the freedom of any, and all being constantly watched and managed by one person, the Archduchess and mother of the emperor.

The Archduchess is, in my opinion, the centre of the whole series and the starting point of the whole story, she is from my point of view the real Empress of this town, because she is the one who in the end takes most of the decisions, in a direct or indirect way she keeps control over all the members of her house and the state, it is incredible how the Emperor doesn't manage to take almost any decision without his mother being present in some way, even when he wants to take different paths he always ends up doing and being guided by what his mother "suggests", from his marriage, which although it wasn't to the girl she had chosen in the end it came to pass, to the important decisions of state, the betrayal of his brother even had to be first approved by her, and Francis' position was a move made by her, it was her decision based on the welfare of the empire, or as I prefer to see it, it was the puppet she needed for her to rule. The only thing the Archduchess doesn't seem to control is the people, who have been subjected to unbridled violence and are somehow getting tired of it, especially because they live in super-poor conditions while their monarchs live in exuberant luxury, and the people are such an important element, that the series ends just with them on the scene, and I feel they will be of great importance in the next season 😌.

This series really was a total surprise for me, somehow I knew I would like it but I never imagined how hooked I would be 🤣, the last episode obviously left me stung so I'm thankful that a second season has been confirmed, because I really need some answers, if you like this kind of period content and with some history, I'm sure you will enjoy this series and if you already watched it, let me know what you thought 🤭, it's available on Netflix for you to go marathon 😉.
