The Fall, is a dark thriller (metaphorically speaking) with Gillian Anderson (the remembered and young interpreter in X-Files) and Jaime Dornan (remembered for playing Christian Grey in the film trilogy of Fifty Shades of Grey based on the eponymous novel by the English author E. L. James).
This series, with particular characteristics since it was made over only three seasons, between 2013 and 2016, and with a very reduced number of chapters (five in the first season and six in the remaining two) is one of Gillian Anderson's most celebrated works.
In Spain it was released under the name La Caza.

This series, of particular characteristics since it was made over only three seasons, between 2013 and 2016, and with a very reduced number of chapters (five in the first season and six in the remaining two) is one of Gillian Anderson's most celebrated works.With an extremely slow pace it is, nevertheless, one of the best series of the genre that I have had the chance to see in recent years.
To accept it we must eliminate from our subconscious some typical elements of this type of series: express and real violence, chases in the best Hollywood style, shooting in continuation, blood and lots of action.
There is none of that in this series. It is a cinematic product in the best Scandinavian style (despite being filmed in Northern Ireland). Slow sequences, lots of silences, no screaming, no expletives.
Violence is in the very essence of the characters. In their gestures. In their looks. It reminded me a lot of some Ingmar Bergman's films and of Wang Xiaoshuai's Peking Bicycle, an excellent Chinese film that pretended to be a remake and at the same time a tribute to the great Vittorio de Sica with his masterpiece Bicycle Thief.

Con un ritmo extremadamente lento es, no obstante ello, una de las mejores series del género que me haya tocado ver en los últimos años.
Para aceptarla debemos eliminar de nuestro subconsciente algunos elementos típicos de este tipo de series: violencia expresa y real, persecuciones al mejor estilo hollywodense, disparos en continuación, sangre y mucho acción.
No hay nada de ello en esta serie. Es un producto cinematográfico al mejor estilo escandinavo (a pesar de estar filmado en Irlanda del Norte).
Secuencias lentas, muchos silencios, ningún grito, ningún improperio.
La violencia está en la esencia misma de los personajes. En sus gestos. En sus miradas. Me ha hecho recordar mucho a algunos films de Ingmar Bergman y a la Bicicleta de Pekin de Wang Xiaoshuai excelente film chino que pretendió ser una remake y a la vez un homenaje al gran Vittorio de Sica con su obra maestra Ladrón de Bicicletas.

The plot focuses on the psychology of its two main characters: on the one hand Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan), a seemingly blameless husband and family man who works as a marriage counselor, is in reality a ruthless killer, incapable of showing the slightest mercy to his victims, whom he enjoys watching suffer to the point of prolonging their agony.
He terrorizes the surroundings of Belfast and the police have not managed to get any clue about his identity, divided between their fight against terrorism and the subversive cells that, in a secondary way, are present in the series as a backdrop.
On the other hand, Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) who arrives from London where she worked at the MET (the London metro police that deals with security in the big city) to Belfast to deal with the case, also with her demons in tow, and with a sexual ambiguity that sometimes leaves even her own colleagues puzzled.
Spector becomes the prime suspect after his presence is discovered in the vicinity of the last murder, when he leaves the Botanical Gardens.
To throw his followers off the scent, he voluntarily presents himself to the police, pretending to want to collaborate in the case and giving his version of the reason for his presence in a place close to the crime.
The data for the DNA test are taken from him, which at the moment are unsuccessful, but are revealed to be effective when the scissors used by Spector to kill his victim are found in the river with his fingerprints and the blood of the murdered person.
From that moment on, the real challenge between the two begins. Spector feels discovered and flees but first he communicates with the detective with whom he enters into a hunter-prey relationship where the roles are often reversed.
Until he is finally arrested and the challenge continues. He agrees to talk only in the presence of the detective (who has stolen his diary and therefore knows his most intimate secrets).
A real psychological battle without exclusion of low blows, but without ever raising the tone of voice.
A kind of relationship is created between the two, similar to a game of cat and mouse, where no one is able to impose himself from the emotional level and where the confession is gradually unraveling, revealing the demons of each one of them.
La trama se centra el la psicología de sus dos personajes principales: por un lado Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) aparentemente un irreprensible esposo y padre de familia que trabaja como asesor matrimonial que en realidad es un despiadado asesino, incapaz de tener la mínima piedad con sus víctimas con quienes goza al verlas sufrir al punto tal de prolongar su agonía.
Aterroriza los alrededores de Belfast y la policía no ha logrado tener ningún indicio sobre su identidad, dividida entre su lucha al antiterrorismo y las cúlulas subversivas que, en modo secundario, están presente en la serie como telón de fondo.
Por otro lado, la superintendente detective **Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) **que llega desde Londres donde trabajaba en el MET (la policiía metroplitana de Londres que se ocupa de la seguridad en la gran ciudad) hasta Belfast para ocuparse del caso, también ella con sus demonios a cuestas, y con una ambiguedad sexual que a veces deja desconcertados hasta a sus propios colegas de trabajo.
Spector pasa a ser el primer sospechoso luego que se descubre su presencia en las cercanías del último homicidio, cuando sale del Jardí Botánico.
Para despistar a sus seguidores se presenta voluntariamente a la policía fingiendo de querer colaborar en el caso y dando su versión acerca del motivo de su presencia en un lugar cercano al crimen.
Le son tomados los datos para la prueba del DNA, que al momento resultan infructuosos, pero que se revelan eficaces cuando se encuentra en el rio la tijera utilizada por Spector para matar a su víctima con sus huellas digitales y la sangre de la persona asesinada.
A partir de ese momento comienza el verdadero desafío entre ambos. Spector se siente descubierto y huye pero antes se comunica con la detective con la cuál entabla una relación de cazador-presa donde muchas veces los roles se invierten.
Hasta que finalmente es detenido y el desafío continúa. Acepta a hablar solo en presencia de la detective (a la cuál le ha robado su diario y por lo tanto conoce su más íntimos secretos).
Una verdadera batalla psicológica sin exclusión de golpes bajos, pero sin alzar nunca el tono de la voz.
Se crea una especie de relación entre ambos similar al juego del gato y el ratón donde ninguno logra imponerse desde el plano emocional y donde la confesión se va desgranando de a poco metiendo al descubierto los demonios de cada uno.

The Fall is a series that allows us to highlight many things even though the ending has been unnecessarily lengthened and the last chapters have lost some thematic consistency.
It is evident that its creator, Allan Cubitt, has tried to give a global vision of the problem of misogyny and sexual violence. Stella Gibson's character retains a femininity that we rarely see in this type of series, who does not censor herself when it comes to satisfying her sexual instincts and at the same time points out the machismo that exists among her colleagues in the police force.
All in a climate that at certain moments seems to be claustrophobic, where the characters analyze each other and old stories return to the surface as events unfold. With Belfast as a backdrop, where the wounds of terrorism and the struggle between Catholics and Protestants have not yet healed.
The Fall es una serie que nos permite destacar muchas cosas aunque el final haya sido alargado innecesariamente y los últimos capítulos hayan perdido un poco de consistencia temática.
Es evidente que su creador, Allan Cubitt, ha tratado de dar una visión global sobre el problema de la misoginia y la violencia sexual. Donde el personaje de Stella Gibson conserva una femineidad que pocas veces vemos en este tipo de series, que no se censura a la hora de satisfacer sus instintos sexuales y que a su vez señala el machismo que existe entre sus colegas de la policía.
Todo en un clima que en ciertos momentos parece ser claustrofóbico.Donde los personajes se analizan recíprocamente e historias antiguas vuelven a la superficie según van sucediendo los acontecimientos. Con una Belfast, como escenario de fondo, donde las heridas del terrorismo y la lucha entre católicos y protestantes todavía no han terminado de cicatrizarse.
