1. ›Fast and Furious 8 (film): It's exactly what you expect@gooddream2587d

   This came up on Netflix "new" section yesterday and I figured I may as well give it a shot. No one goes into a Fast / Furious movie expecting a compelling storyline with a rich Oscar-worthy script. The movies are entertaining and the story is generally pretty irrelevant.

   It's got action and fast cars; it's got the Rock, Jason Statham and Vin Diesel; it's got a bunch of women dressed in almost nothing dancing at car parties; it's got exotic locations and a relatively unlimited CGI budget and it is directed by someone that has 2 "Gary's" in his name.

   While I wouldn't say that exactly get super-excited about a new film in this franchise and there is something about Michelle Rodriguez that I find genuinely disturbing, I still find these films entertaining even though the storyline is pretty much a foregone conclusion: The good guys are going to win, it is just a question of how it is that they get there in what sort of mechanically impossible situation (remember the one where they are chasing a plane on a runway and the chase lasts for like 15 minutes? Someone did the math and the runway would have needed to be nearly 30 miles long. I know the plane is heavy, but it isn't that heavy.

   There is one sequence, and I can't even imagine how they approached representing this on screen, where the entire crew and their supercars are being pursued by a submarine while driving on the ice in Russia.

   For anyone that is thinking of accusing me of spoilers, the fact that the sub is part of the story is in all the trailers, so shhhh!

   These films are simply an action overload and the plot and overall feasibility of the scenarios is something you just have to overlook in order to enjoy these movies. I like them even though most of what the cars are put through are again, mechanically impossible with any vehicle, even if it is tricked out like the ones in the film claim to be. The action sequences, particularly the ones involving Statham and Dwayne Johnson are especially fun.

   I look at these movies and think "how are there 8 of these?" The answer is simple: Money. It is unreal to me that after 8 of these this concept is one of the biggest money makers in the film industry. This one's overall global gross was nearly $1.3 Billion.

   On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I give Fast and Furious 8 the overall score of....

It is the eighth installment in The Fast and the Furious franchise. The film stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Scott Eastwood, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron. The Fate of the Furious follows Dominic Toretto (Diesel), who has settled down with his wife Letty (Rodriguez), until cyberterrorist Cipher (Theron) coerces him into working for her and turns him against his team, forcing them to find Dom and take down Cipher.

   There are eight movies in the The Fast and The Furious franchise. I don't think anyone expected that way back when they said let's make a sequel to that first one way back when. It wasn't until the fourth film, reuniting Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, that the franchise started finding its legs and Fast Five when they flipped into a crazy direction and found the beginnings of that crazy, over the top tone that would made part six so entertaining and seven a little hard to take.

   With the death of Paul Walker, it was inevitable that the franchise was going to need to change things up a little bit to stay interesting to itself. The Fate of the Furious is still crazy and over the top, and self aware, but it is adding new shades by splitting up the family.

   Long story short, Vin Diesel's Dom joins forces with Charlize Theron's Cypher, betraying his family and putting Dwayne Johnson's Hobbs in jail. Broken out by Mr. Nobody, Hobbs and the team join forces with Jason Statham's Deckard to go after Dom and Cypher. Lots of action and talk of family ensue.

   The team's only white guy, the replacement for Paul Walker, was completely forgettable. The rest of the team is back but many of them take back stage to the central drama between Vin Diesel and Charlize Theron. I was impressed with Vin Diesel in this one. I've always been a fan. I thought Michele Rodriguez was underserved this time out. Overall, the film had a different feel, probably because regular director, Justin Lin, went off to direct Star Trek Beyond and F. Gary Gray took over. I can't even really describe how it's different, it just feels so, more thoughtful, I guess.

   See it, it's fun.

   Plus there's a submarine.
