   While I've enjoyed all of the David Fincher movies I've had the chance to see (Se7en, The Social Network, Zodiac, and Gone Girl), I'll admit that it's not a filmography that I'm one to meddle in with much encouragement, especially since despite the Undeniable quality of his work, most of his films tend to be quite dense and require our deepest attention at all times.

   

   

   Unlike all the movies I mentioned previously, I think it's fair to say that The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is much more polarizing and is sometimes even considered some of his weaker work.

   To my surprise this couldn't be further from the truth since this solid adaptation of the Swedish book "The men who didn't love women" (Written by Stieg Larsson), fits perfectly with the vision and style of the filmmaker, something that at least in my humble opinion it allows to elevate it in your personal Olympus of works of art.

   Starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara (both giving brilliant performances), The Girls With The Dragon Tattoo could be defined as a detective thriller in which we follow the investigation of a murder that occurred more than 49 years ago.

   

   

   The journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Played by Craig) is involved in this investigation, who in exchange for information that could save his reputation decides to work on the case, but not before allying himself with a mysterious woman whose abilities allow her to reveal practically any case.

   The point is that beyond this "so simple" premise, the bowels of Steven Zaillian's script manage to contain various small stories that interconnect and serve to give more density to the central conflict.

   Liseth Salander (The hacker I mentioned earlier, played by Rooney Mara) has a dark past that makes it impossible for her to escape, and for some reason she is a ward of the state despite being 23 years old.

   Harriet's family (the woman who was murdered in the past) have quite a complicated relationship with each other and although she often seems willing to contribute to Mike, it is also evident that something strange is going on between them.

   

   

   

   Apart from the neat and sober style to which Fincher has accustomed us (something that even permeates the great soundtrack of this film), The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo stands as a slow-cooking but hypnotic drama, where you can live with its picturesque protagonists is as attractive as deciphering the central crime.

   It is a film with very hard moments and it is evident that it endeavors to attack racism and machismo with great skill, however, this very moralistic nature never ends up obstructing the general experience, where we are immersed in a cold and desolate world in where we can't trust anyone.

   Aunque he disfrutado todas las películas de David Fincher que he tenido la oportunidad de ver (Se7en, The Social Network, Zodiac y Gone Girl), admito que no es una filmografía en la que suelo entrometerme con muchos ánimos, especialmente porque a pesar de la innegable calidad de su trabajo, la mayoría de sus filmes suelen ser bastante densos y requieren nuestra más profunda atención en todo momento.

   

   

   A diferencia de todas las películas que mencioné previamente, creo que es acertado decir que The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo es mucho más polarizante y a veces incluso se considera de sus trabajos más flojos.

   Para mí sorpresa esto no podría estar más lejos de la realidad puesto que está sólida adaptación del libro sueco "Los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres" (Escrito por Stieg Larsson), encaja perfectamente con la visión y el estilo del cineasta, algo que al menos en mi humilde opinión permite elevarla en su Olimpo personal de obras de arte.

   Protagonizada por Daniel Craig y Rooney Mara (Ambos dando performance brillantes), The Girls With The Dragon Tattoo podría definirse como un thriller de detectives en dónde seguimos la investigación de un asesinato ocurrido hace más de 49 años.

   

   

   En dicha investigación se ve envuelto el periodista Mikael Blomkvist (Interpretado por Craig), quien a cambio de una información que podría salvar su reputación decide trabajar en el caso, no sin antes aliarse con una misteriosa mujer cuyas capacidades le permiten desvelar prácticamente cualquier caso.

   La cuestión es que más allá de esta premisa "tan simple" las entrañas del guión de Steven Zaillian logran contener diversas pequeñas historias que se interconectan y sirven para darle más densidad al conflicto central.

   Liseth Salander (La hacker que mencioné previamente, interpretada por Rooney Mara) cuenta con un pasado oscuro del que se le hace imposible huir, y por alguna razón está bajo tutoría del estado a pesar de tener 23 años.

   La familia de Harriet (La mujer que fue asesinada en el pasado) tiene una relación bastante complicada entre si y aunque muchas veces parece estar dispuesta a contribuir con Mike, también es evidente que algo extraño está sucediendo entre ellos.

   

   

   

   Aparte del estilo tan pulcro y sobrio al que nos tiene acostumbrado Fincher (Algo que incluso impregna la genial banda sonora de esta película), The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo se sostiene como un drama de cocción lenta pero hipnótico, en dónde convivir con sus pintorescos protagonistas es tan atractivo como descifrar el crimen central.

   Es una película con momentos muy duros y es evidente que se empeña en atacar el racismo y el machismo con muchísima habilidad, no obstante, esta naturaleza tan moralista nunca termina obstruyendo la experiencia general, en dónde se nos sumerge en un mundo frío y desolado en dónde no podemos confiar en nadie.

Hablo de la cinta “La Chica del Dragón Tatuado”, una película de David Fincher, basada en la novela homónima “Los Hombres Que No Amaban A Las Mujeres”, de Stieg Larsson.

   It featured a cast of actors headed by: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Robin Wright, Steven Berkoff, Yorick Van Wageningen, Goran Visnjic, Geraldine James, Joely Richardson, Embeth Davidtz, Alan Dale, Inga Landgré, among others. One of the masterful things about this film is that much of the load of mystery depended on the performances and how, during the film, the characters with complex pasts evolved through the plot. This film was released in 2011 and I remember that I went to see it with some friends, despite the fact that the film lasts 158 minutes, at no time did we lose interest, on the contrary, as each one progressed we made our guesses as to who was the murderer and if Lisbeth Salander (Mara), could escape.

   Contó con un reparto de actores encabezados por: Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Robin Wright, Steven Berkoff, Yorick Van Wageningen, Goran Visnjic, Geraldine James, Joely Richardson, Embeth Davidtz, Alan Dale, Inga Landgré, entre otros. Una de las cosas magistrales de esta película es mucho de la carga de misterio dependieron de las actuaciones y como durante la cinta los personajes con pasados complejos fueron evolucionando a través de la trama. Esta película fue estrenada en el 2011 y recuerdo que la fui a ver con unas amigas, a pesar de que la película dura 158 minutos, en ningún momento perdimos el interés, por el contrario, mientras avanzaba cada una hacíamos nuestras conjeturas de quien era el asesino y si Lisbeth Salander (Mara), podría escapar.

   The film has strong scenes of violence towards women that are not easy to digest, looking for a serial killer who has been murdering and torturing women for decades, Maikel Blomkvist the journalist who, to save his reputation, gets involved in investigating the disappearance of the granddaughter of Henrik Vanger (Plummer), helped by a young hacker, Lisbeth (Mara), with a troubled but highly intelligent past. They are the ingredients that this tape brings us. Staying attentive all the time is not easy, but this movie achieves it with the constant twists and subplots, I remember that the first time I saw it with my friends, we observed the details in the scenes looking for clues that would get us ahead of events, some of us were right and in others we failed miserably, but we enjoyed it.

   La cinta tienes escenas fuertes y de violencia hacia las mujeres que no son fáciles de digerir, buscar un asesino en serie que durante décadas ha estado asesinando y torturando mujeres, Maikel Blomkvist el periodista que para salvar su reputación se involucra en investigar la desaparición de la nieta de Henrik Vanger (Plummer), ayudado por un joven hacker, Lisbeth (Mara), con un pasado problemático pero muy inteligente. Son los ingredientes que esta cinta nos trae. Mantenerte atento todo el tiempo no es fácil, pero esta película lo logra con los constantes giros y subtramas, recuerdo que la primera vez que la vi con mis amigas, observamos los detalles en las escenas buscando pistas que nos adelantará a los acontecimientos, algunas acertamos y en otras fallamos estrepitosamente, pero lo disfrutábamos.

   For me and we talked about it after leaving to see the movie with my friends, the strongest scene, after the rape of Lisbeth (Mara), is her revenge against Nils Bjurman (Yorick), not only from the emotional aspect of taking the justice by her hand, but also to achieve her freedom to be herself with everything and her emotional conflicts that made her an antisocial person, apparently devoid of feelings when she was the opposite. A character with all the reasons to hate the world, but with an enormous intelligence and sense of justice, perhaps because he lacked it since he was a child. My friends and I analyzed this a lot when we left the cinema because the character impressed us.

   Para mí y lo hablamos luego de salir de ver la película con mis amigas, la escena más fuerte, luego de la violación de Lisbeth (Mara), es su venganza contra Nils Bjurman (Yorick), no solo desde el aspecto emocional de tomar la justicia por su mano, sino también de lograr su libertad para ser ella misma con todo y sus conflictos emocionales que la hacían una persona antisocial, aparentemente carente de sentimientos cuando era lo contrario. Un personaje con todas las razones para odiar al mundo, pero con una inteligencia y sentido de justicia enorme, quizás porque careció de ella desde niña. Esto lo analizamos mucho mis amigas y yo al salir del cine porque el personaje nos impresionó.

   The magic of this film is that from the beginning it makes you think, it makes you analyze, it shows you all the characters from their dark, financial or moral motivations, it leaves no gaps and that allows you to have an x-ray of the characters. This allows us to show off and look for clues to find out who the murderer was and why he killed them. It's the kind of movie you can't stop paying attention to because you'd miss a detail or clue that would lead to the killer. That emotion was what caught my friends and me when I saw it and then I repeated to see it to better appreciate the details.

   La magia de esta cinta es que desde que comienza te hace pensar, te hace analizar, te muestra todos los personajes desde sus motivaciones oscuras, financieras o morales, no deja vacíos y eso te permite tener una radiografía de los personajes. Esto hace que podamos presumir y buscar pistas para saber quien era el asesino y porque las mataba. Es el tipo de película que no puedes dejar de prestar atención porque perderías un detalle o pista que te llevara al asesino. Esa emoción fue lo que nos atrapó a mis amigas y a mí al verla y que luego yo repitiera ver para apreciar mejor los detalles.

   For these reasons I chose this tape, the detective memories that I and my friends made when we saw it and the fun times we had that day, those memories come alive when I see this tape. Those magical and fun moments we spend watching and analyzing it. Many years have passed since that and although only 3 of the four of us are still in contact, if any of us sees this tape on TV, I am sure that she will remember that day as I remember today when writing it. If you haven't seen this movie yet, do it, it's a great movie.

   Por estas razones escogí esta cinta, los recuerdos detectivescos que junto a mis amigas realizamos al verla y los momentos divertidos que pasamos ese día, esos recuerdos se avivan cuando veo esta cinta. Esos momentos mágicos y divertidos que pasamos viéndola y analizándola. Han pasado muchos años de eso y aunque solo seguimos en contacto 3 de las cuatro, si alguna de nosotras ve en TV esta cinta, estoy segura de que recordará ese día como yo hoy recuerdo al escribirlo. Si aún no has visto esta cinta hazlo es una gran película.

   La versión estadounidense es del año 2011

   El escritor Sueco Stieg Larsson saltó a la fama internacional con su saga Millenium que a la fecha ha vendido más de 80 millones de ejemplares en todo el mundo. Desafortunadamente no pudo vivir esa celebridad porque falleció al poco tiempo de haber entregado el tercer manuscrito a su editor, cuando ni siquiera se había publicado la primera entrega: Los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres. Sobre ese primer libro de la saga, publiqué un post hace poco que pueden leer acá:

   Con el éxito de los libros y debido al tipo de historia que narra, era sólo cuestión de tiempo para que la primera entrega (toda la saga, de hecho) fuese adaptada al cine. En Suecia se realizaron las tres películas (de los tres libros de Larsson), con la actuación estelar de Noomi Rapace como Lisbeth Salander y luego fueron presentadas en versión extendida como una mini serie de TV de seis capítulos, con una duración aproximada de noventa minutos por episodio. Dos años después, en 2011, David Fincher dirigió el remake estadounidense con Daniel Craig como Mikael Blomkvist y Rooney Mara como Lisbeth. Y es en la comparación de esta última con su versión sueca en la que se centrara la presente publicación, evitando los spoilers, al igual que en la publicación sobre el libro.

   Para aquellos que aún no han visto la película y no saben nada de la trama, se trata, a grandes rasgos, de una novela negra. La cinta comienza con el periodista Mikael Blomkvist, quien ha perdido un juicio en el que se le acusaba de difamar a un empresario pesado de las finanzas en Estocolmo. Con su credibilidad cuestionada y temiendo mayores represalias contra la revista en que trabaja, Millenium, Blomkvist acepta una propuesta de trabajo muy particular: resolver el misterioso asesinato de Harriet Vanger, ocurrido hace cuarenta años. ¿Quién lo contrata? el tío abuelo de Harriet, Henrik Vanger ¿quiénes son los sospechosos? los habitantes de una remota isla del norte de Suecia, quienes son además, familiares de Henrik y de la chica asesinada. Blomkvist inicia entonces una investigación que lo llevará a descubrir los secretos más oscuros y comprometedores de la poderosa familia y dará con pistas nuevas sobre lo que le ocurrió a Harriet.

   Por otro lado, tenemos a Lisbeth Salander, una joven hacker que trabaja para Milton Security como investigadora freelance. Tiene 24 años pero parece mucho menor, pálida, delgada en extremo, con el cabello cortado al cepillo, piercings en nariz y cejas, un dragón tatuado en la espalda; su imagen resulta un tanto repulsiva para el común de la gente. Lisbeth es contratada al inicio por el abogado de Henrik Vanger para investigar a Mikael, antes de ofrecerle el trabajo sobre Harriet. Conforme avanza la cinta, vamos descubriendo su violento pasado, lleno de abusos, de ofensas y rechazos. Debido a ese pasado, Lisbeth es obligada a tener un tutor legal, un guardián proporcionado por el estado para velar por su bienestar. Cuando su comprensivo cuidador sufre un ataque cerebro vascular, su nuevo guardián, Nils Bjurman, se aprovecha de la situación y abusa sexualmente de ella. Es entonces cuando Salander decide tomar la justicia por su propia mano.

   La película avanza por dos líneas narrativas, hasta que Mikael propone a Lisbeth que le ayude a resolver el caso de Harriet Vanger. Con la intuición del periodista y las habilidades investigadoras de la joven, quien además tiene memoria eidética, hay más probabilidades de resolver el caso. Pesquisas en estaciones de policías, revisando correspondencia, archivos, diarios, fotografías, e incluso la biblia, Mikael y Lisbeth van siguiendo las migas de pan que los van guiando hasta una verdad tan perturbadora que sobrepasa las intenciones de la investigación y se dan cuenta de que están lidiando con algo mucho más complejo de lo que se pensó en un principio. Para no adelantar más de una trama bien construida, me dispondré ahora a comparar las dos películas, la sueca y la norteamericana.

   Normalmente me inclino hacia el lado de las películas originales, excepto cuando el remake es claramente superior en todos los aspectos, como ocurrió con The Departed de Martin Scorsese. Y este es uno de esos casos. La versión norteamericana, titulada The girl with the dragon tattoo y dirigida por David Fincher, es mejor que la original sueca Män som hatar kvinnor de Niels Arden Oplev. Aunque la europea toma el título directamente de la novela, en muchos casos se aleja más de ella que la versión de Fincher. Siempre que se adapta un libro al cine, hay que estar dispuesto a negociar las cosas que se muestran en pantalla y las que no; algunos hechos son suprimidos y cambiados para volver la historia más fílmica, eso es comprensible. Por eso hay ciertas cosas que cambian, como la ausencia de la madre de Lisbeth en el asilo, o la supresión del romance entre Mikael y Cecilia Vanger, cuya ausencia no modifica la historia. Pero hay otros cambios condenables, sobre todo en la versión europea.

   En la última parte del libro, Lisbeth apoya a Blomkvist con la investigación, pero lo hace desde su libertad, su independencia, a su ritmo, con su actitud característica de no involucrarse emocionalmente, o de no demostrarlo en todo caso. En la versión de Fincher vemos a Salander viajar en su moto a investigar por su lado, mientras Mikael lo hace por el suyo, tal como aparece en el libro. Pero en la versión sueca, ambos van juntos de comisaría en comisaría, investigando pistas como si fuesen una pareja ya formada, cosa que no sólo no está en el libro sino que es incoherente con el personaje de Salander. Y ya que hablo de ella, aunque Noomi Rapace hizo un muy buen papel, lo de Rooney Mara es superlativo y mucho más ajustado a la descripción del libro, tanto en lo físico como en lo actitudinal. El look y la presencia de Mara la hacen ver más frágil, extraña y logra disimular su belleza para hacerla lucir poco atractiva, tal como es Salander en el libro; en cambio Noomi, a pesar de los piercings y el cabello, se sigue viendo demasiado atractiva para ser Lisbeth.

   El director de casting de Fincher también hizo un mejor trabajo que el de su homólogo de la versión sueca. Comenzado con Rooney Mara y Daniel Craig, cada actor y actriz fue perfectamente escogido para el papel que se lo dio, Stellan Skarsgard, Robin Wright, Steven Berkoff, todos hicieron un gran trabajo. Christopher Plummer como Henrik Vanger resultó una gran alternativa a la que a mí me hubiera parecido la opción más lógica y que ninguna versión empleó: el actor sueco Max von Sydow. Entonces, un excelente casting, un montaje perfecto, una edición sin detalles, un guión más fiel al libro, una dirección acertada de Fincher y una encarnación perfecta de Rooney Mara como Lisbeth Salander (que le valió una nominación al Oscar) hacen al remake muy superior a la película original y la versión más recomendable para aquellos que quieran descubrir el universo del fenómeno Millenium, los amantes del cine y de los thrillers violentos.

   World bestselling films are hard work. Such world bestsellers, which already exist in film form (and not bad at all), are even more difficult. The reviews of such films are terrible. It is inconvenient for a man to abstain from everything "before" and to look with fresh eyes, pure, and only to "now," without any comparisons and oppositions such as this-in-the-book-was-so-how "or" this is-one-to-one-with-the-front movie, "which is quite annoying. I had an enormous desire to write exactly such a paralysis-free review and, frankly, I almost got it, but unfortunately, though for a little bit, I still have to address the source material.

   

   I'll start with the fact that the technical film is perfect. No one nowadays shoots the way David Fincher do - a real perfectionist who can easily get up to Kubrick the way he looks at each frame. The atmosphere is crushing - vision, movement of the camera, installation ... whatever and where to catch, everything is on an extraordinarily high level, including rhythm, acting performances and, of course, the music that Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Fincher leads the story slowly and tightly, with no narrative peaks (I do not know whether he deliberately imitates the Scandinavian type of cinema or everything comes from the story) and the overall feeling is about a rather limited and almost entirely emotionless story in which even the climax comes equally and unselfishly and fails to bring true satisfaction. The biggest accent is in fact the starting inscriptions that go on the cover of Led Zeppelin and which seem almost out of place. I say almost because they are really strange, but in fact they contain everything interesting as sensations and emotions that the film has to offer us.

   However strange it may seem, I personally think this is a plus for the movie. Plus, because this approach definitely works and gives a substance to the story that, in a different approach (when it comes to the "American version" of something that exists), it would hurt unpleasantly, as it is a real "pulp fiction" , with a not very original central mystery, slightly adorned with dirty issues of retaliation, dysfunctional family, corruption, rapists and Nazis. The only thing that distinguishes"The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" from most of these conveyor stories is the main the heroine Lisbeth Salander, which is really an extremely interesting image - fresh and different from almost everything we have seen in the genre so far. It is definitely the best image in the movie. Fincher and the screenwriter Steve Zeylian have managed to preserve all the controversial elements and nuances of the heroine - a brilliant young hacker with an extraordinary mind, but at the same time a self-contained, easily harsh soul hiding under his rude, antisocial appearance and conduct a heavy trauma from the past , the consequences of which they are pursuing with full force today. What distinguishes their particular Salander is Rooney Mara. Its performance is far more sensational and the feeling of wounding is much more noticeable, and hence the contrast with the outbursts of violence when provoked is also greater. My only remark is that Mara unconsciously (because of her physics) brings a little more sexuality that I personally does not associate with the image.

   

   Unfortunately, Rooney Mara can not influence the whole story. The changes made by Zaylian and Fincher are rather insignificant and cosmetic, but in order for this film to go beyond its purely aesthetic qualities and become a truly significant cinematic production, it must have been bigger and far more. That is, to feel the purely personal creative interpretation of the novel. Of course, here comes the question if such changes are made, why not just make another film with a whole new story? This question, alas, does not have a single answer, but is a very serious issue, more complex than it seems at first glance, and we can not look at it just like that. But all that is said above defines the movie as "all style and no substance"? Well depends on which country you want to look at. From that of the central mystery with the murders and the rather boring problems of Mikael Bloomquit - Daniel Craig is doing pretty well with the role (that's all the other actors - Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard, Stephen Burkow and especially Christopher Plummer, who is just perfect) - or that of Lisbeth Salander, who actually has something to say, albeit in places to make it too obvious.
