   In my first year of medical school, I was taking a subject called "Language Comprehension" (don't ask me how this is related to my degree) and the professor who taught it made us watch *The Great Debaters* as an assignment, with the purpose of teaching us how to argue an argument and have a real debate. Little did we know that this movie would leave such a mark on us.

   The Great Debaters was directed by someone very well known in the industry and that is legendary actor Denzel Washington. This movie was released in 2007 and, in a nutshell, focuses on English professor Melvin B. Tolson and his students at Wiley College, a small, predominantly black institution.

   

   It gives us a glimpse of Texas, specifically Jim Crow South in the year 1935, when Professor Tolson decides to create a debate group, looking for the best and most determined to stand up to the other universities and become the first black debate group willing to take the place of the invincible Harvard. Something inconceivable at the time, especially for them.

   

   Debating is a blood sport. It' s combat. Yet your weapons are words

   After some daunting and demanding auditions, Tolson chooses 4 students to represent the university: Henry Lowe, a smart but wild about girls and parties; James Farmer Jr. no slouch when it comes to knowledge, though often self-conscious due to 14-year-old shyness; Hamilton Burgess; and finally, the understudy and only known female to be on a debate team, Samantha Booke.

   

   It comes as no surprise to us that Denzel Washington not only directed the film but, of course, stars in it as Professor Tolson, adding seriousness and charisma at the necessary moments to the character. His students are played by Nate Parker as Henry Lowe, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Samantha Booke and Denzel Whitaker as James Farmer Jr. whose father in the film is Dr. James Farmer, played by the famous Forest Whitaker.

   

   

   . The Great Debaters depicts these students' battles to be noticed, to want to be heard regardless of their skin color. Although it is true that throughout the film, this debate group only debates the ''good'' side of the issues; this doesn't stop us from recognizing their victories and the strength of their arguments. I must admit that it would've been interesting to see them defend a point that they hate and that goes against their principles.

   

   

   Who is your opponent? He doesn't exist. Why doesn't he exist? He is simply a dissenting voice to the truth I speak.

   With Tolson and his secret life, the director makes clear the political context of the time, where a national union is being organized for the workers. Of course, we will witness the radical racism of the time and the brutal attacks they were victims of. Towards the end, there's an extremely disturbing scene that leaves our skin crawling, where Tolson's students find a black man lynched and burned in the midst of a horde of white men.

   

   It also teaches us a teacher-student relationship that is worth gold, that dynamic and full confidence that Tolson motivates them to be better. Tolson disciplines them, he doesn't treat them like fools or too gently, for he knows they're capable of more than they believe and it is this that gets them to achieve victories as a debating group. Even when he's arrested and removed from the project, he tells them:

   Defeat would make you stronger. You are my students, I am a teacher. I believe that is a sacred trust. My message to you is to never give up.

   

   Above all else, I think The Great Debaters is mostly about how these students, their teacher, their community, believe that education is the best, if not only, solution to diminish prejudice, discrimination and racism, for these are only the product of ignorance. He makes this clear in Dr. Farmer's speech at the beginning of the film:

   We must emphasize to our young people that there will be difficulties they will face. They must overcome them! They must do what they have to do in order to realize what they want. Education is the only way out. The way out of ignorance. The way out of darkness... Into the glorious light.

   The Great Debaters is based on the real life of Melvin B. Thomson and, finishing the last scene, we will see the real people who inspired this movie and what they did with their lives. I have to admit that it leaves us with a very great satisfaction to know that they were able to achieve their goals and continue to stand up for the civil rights of their people.

   

   Somehow, the color "black" was always associated with failure. So write your own dictionary. And mark this as a new beginning, whether you're part of the team or not.

   En mi primer año de medicina, cursaba una materia llamada "Comprensión lingüística" (no me pregunten qué relación tiene con la carrera) y el profesor que la impartía nos puso como asignación ver *The Great Debaters*, con el propósito de enseñarnos cómo argumentar una discusión y tener un debate de verdad. Poco sabíamos nosotros que esta película nos marcaría tanto.

   The Great Debaters fue dirigida por alguien muy reconocido en la industria y ese es el legendario actor Denzel Washington. Esta película fue estrenada en el 2007 y, en pocas palabras, se enfoca en el profesor de Inglés Melvin B. Tolson y sus estudiantes de la Universidad Wiley, una pequeña institución predominantemente negra.

   

   Nos ofrece una visión de Texas, específicamente Jim Crow South en el año 1935, cuando el profesor Tolson decide crear un grupo de debate, buscando a los mejores y más decididos para hacerle frente a las demás universidades y convertirse en el primer grupo de debate negro dispuesto a quitarle el puesto a la invincible Harvard. Algo inconcebible en la época, especialmente para ellos.

   

   El debate es un deporte sanguinario. Es combate. Pero sus armas son las palabras

   Después de unas audiciones intimidantes y exigentes, Tolson elige a 4 estudiantes para representar a la universidad: Henry Lowe, un joven inteligente pero rebelde con las chicas y las fiestas; James Farmer Jr. no se queda atrás en cuanto a conocimientos, aunque muchas veces se cohíbe por la timidez propia de los 14 años; Hamilton Burgess y, finalmente, la suplente y única mujer conocida en estar en un grupo de debate, Samantha Booke.

   

   No nos sorprende que Denzel Washington no solo dirigió la película sino que, por supuesto, actúa en ella siendo el profesor Tolson, agregandole la seriedad y el carisma en los momentos necesarios al personaje. Sus estudiantes son interpretados por Nate Parker como Henry Lowe, Jurnee Smollett-Bell como Samantha Booke y Denzel Whitaker como James Farmer Jr., cuyo padre en la película es el Dr. James Farmer, interpretado por el famoso Forest Whitaker.

   

   

   . The Great Debaters nos muestra las batallas de estos estudiantes por hacerse notar, por querer que los escuchen más allá de su color de piel. Si bien es cierto que durante toda la película, este grupo de debate solo debate el lado ‘’bueno’’ de los temas; esto no nos impide reconocer sus victorias y lo fuerte de sus argumentos. Debo admitir que hubiera sido interesante verlos defender un punto que odien y que vaya en contra de sus principios.

   

   

   ¿Quién es tu oponente? Él no existe. ¿Por qué no existe? Es simplemente una voz discrepante de la verdad que digo.

   Con Tolson y su vida secreta, el director nos deja claro el contexto político de la época, donde se está organizando un sindicato nacional para los trabajadores. Por supuesto, seremos testigos del racismo radical de la época y de los brutales ataques de los que eran víctimas. Hacia el final, hay una escena sumamente perturbadora que nos deja con los pelos de punta, donde los estudiantes de Tolson encuentran a un negro linchado y quemado en medio de una horda de hombres blancos.

   

   También nos enseña una relación maestro-estudiantes que vale oro, esa dinámica y plena confianza de que Tolson los motiva a ser mejores. Tolson los disciplina, no los trata como tontos ni con mucha gentileza, pues sabe que son capaces de más de lo que creen y es esto lo que logra que consigan victorias como grupo de debate. Incluso cuando es arrestado y alejado del proyecto, les dice:

   La derrota lo fortalecería más. Ustedes son mis estudiantes, yo soy un maestro. Creo que esa es una confianza sagrada. Mi mensaje para ustedes es que nunca renuncien.

   

   Por sobre todo esto, creo que The Great Debaters trata más que todo sobre cómo estos estudiantes, su maestro, su comunidad, creen que la educación es la mejor, sino única, solución para disminuir los prejuicios, la discriminación y el racismo, pues estos son solo el producto de la ignorancia. Nos lo deja bien claro en el discurso del Dr. Farmer al iniciar la película:

   Debemos recalcar a nuestros jóvenes que habrá dificultades que enfrentarán. ¡Deben vencerlas! Deben hacer lo que tienen que hacer para poder realizar lo que quieren. La educación es la única salida. La salida de la ignorancia. La salida de la oscuridad… Hacia la luz gloriosa.

   The Great Debaters está basada en la vida real de Melvin B. Thomson y, terminando la última escena, veremos las personas reales que inspiraron esta película y qué hicieron con sus vidas. He de admitir que nos deja con una satisfacción muy grande saber que pudieron lograr sus metas y seguir defendiendo los derechos civiles de su gente.

   

   De algún modo, al color “negro” siempre se lo asoció con fracaso. Bueno, escriban su propio diccionario. Y marquen esto como un nuevo comienzo, ya sean parte del equipo o no.
