Plot
The film opens - after two long minutes of introduction - with a scene in New York City's Central Park where two women are sitting on a bench while another woman's scream is heard in the background and people start to stop out of nowhere (some even start walking backwards). Suddenly, one of the girls sitting there starts talking nonsense repeating the same thing she already said before until she suddenly grabs a sharp object she had [coincidentally] in her hair to take her own life. On another side of the same city, in the middle of a construction site, a group of builders are chatting quietly when suddenly they see how their colleagues who are at the top of the building start to throw themselves off the building to take their own lives. The news is talking about these events as a supposed bioterrorist attack while a Philadelphia High School science teacher named Eliott Moore is summoned to a meeting with the rest of the educational staff to cancel classes due to these incidents and send the students home. What no one knows is that wherever they go, they will not be able to escape what is happening.

I just realized that I have seen different Night Shyamalan movies in my life and most of them have fascinated me a lot. Some of these films have even left such a mark on my childhood and pre-adolescence that even to this day I still value them as the gems they are. But in the case of the film we have in store for us today, it only counts for its traumatic scenes of death or suicide. Of course, I'm talking about a film that I watched at a time that I don't even remember today. And it is normal for this to happen in my case since all the movies I saw as a child I don't remember them well because of their names, their stories or even their characters. Yes there are exceptions, but they are very few being rather the scenarios, the visual effects or certain punctual moments of the movie what comes to my mind sometimes. It is for this very reason that I now annotate and organize these types of movie reviews by genre lists with installments that I remember having seen in the past in order to relive the moment and give them a new opportunity to reevaluate said works separately. Now, in the case of The Happening, I feel it's not one of those films I would recommend out of all the repertoire this great director has to offer, really. However, if you're enough of a suspense fan to watch it, then it's not out of place, as long as you do so at your own judgment.

Pero en el caso de la película que nos depara hoy solo cuenta únicamente por sus escenas traumáticas de muertes o suicidios que tiene. Claro está, hablo de una película que veía en una época que ni recuerdo hoy en día. Y es normal que esto suceda en mi caso ya que todas las películas que he visto cuando era niño no las recuerdo bien por sus nombres, sus historias y ni siquiera por sus personajes. Sí hay excepciones, pero son muy pocas siendo más bien los escenarios, los efectos visuales o ciertos momentos puntuales de la película lo que se me viene a la mente a veces. Es por esto mismo que ahora anoto y organizo este tipo de reseñas de películas por listas de géneros con entregas que yo recuerde haber visto en un pasado para así revivir el momento y darles una nueva oportunidad de reevaluar dichas obras por separado. Ahora, en el caso de The Happening, siento que no es de esas películas que recomendaría de entre todo el repertorio que tiene este gran director para ofrecer, la verdad. Sin embargo, si eres tan fanático del suspenso como para verla, entonces no está de más, siempre y cuando lo hagas a tu propio juicio.

Starting with the story they are trying to tell us, after the disturbing beginning of this movie, we meet Eliott Moore, a high school science teacher. After what I told you above, Eliott and his wife Alma leave by train along with his friend and co-worker Julian who is walking with their young daughter Jess. As they board the train for Harrisburg, they learn that the incident is now happening in Philadelphia. Julian tries to contact his wife, who stayed in Philadelphia, but now claims to be on a bus to Princeton. However, the train suddenly stops in a small town in the middle of nowhere because the conductors lost all radio communication with the dispatcher. On the other hand, as for the plot itself, it is interesting the main premise of a kind of virus or air attack that affects humans causing them to lose control of their bodies and then take their own lives with whatever they have at their fingertips (yes, it's like a kind of zombie virus, but suicidal). It's like a disturbing case of a possible apocalypse that can be invented by anyone with a lot of imagination. The craziest thing of all is the origin of the virus, which are plants, something that nowadays when I think about it is quite surreal, to be honest. There is also the issue of the main characters, being the married couple Eliott Moore and Alma, who from the beginning we learn that they are the typical couple always having problems (nothing new in most survival movies or any kind in Hollywood, right?). A few supporting characters get some attention, but most just fulfill their respective roles. In the case of Eliott's best friend, Julian, we see that his involvement is minor at first and the decision making he does doesn't lead him down a good path. Of course, as it happens to him, everyone dies and only the protagonists survive, as always.

Es como un caso perturbador de un posible apocalipsis que se le puede inventar a cualquiera con mucha imaginación. Lo más loco de todo es el origen de dicho virus, los cuales son las plantas, algo que al día de hoy cuando lo pienso se me hace bastante surrealista, la verdad. También está el tema de los personajes principales, siendo estos la pareja de casado Eliott Moore y Alma, quienes desde el principio nos enteramos que son de la típica pareja de siempre que tiene problemas (ninguna novedad en la mayoría de películas de supervivencia o de cualquier tipo en Hollywood, ¿no?). Algunos personajes secundarios llaman un tanto la atención, pero la mayoría solo cumplen con sus respectivos papeles. En el caso del mejor amigo de Eliott, Julián, vemos que su participación es poca al principio y la toma de decisiones que hace no lo lleva por un buen camino. Claro está, como le sucede a él, todos mueren y solo sobreviven los protagonistas, como siempre.

At this point, I don't care if I throw spoilers like what you have just read, since it is not a movie I recommend and this review is not one of those to speak well of releases as poorly made as this one is. And if we get more detailed and critical than we already are, we can notice that even certain deaths -which is one of the very few "good" things this movie has to offer- are poorly done. Trying to be as realistic as possible, but always being taken to unimaginable extremes. Not that I'm saying I don't like this, but what I'll say next I guess isn't something I'd personally add to a thriller of this level, really. The issue with the humor that tries to creep in at certain points in the film that, rather than break the ice or the tension there, just makes it look more awkward and unnatural than it normally already is. The way the characters play off each other also feels a bit strange and forced at times (I say this more because of the relationship they try to give the married couple with the girl Jess, among other instances). There are even moments where you don't know if what you're watching is a suspenseful natural disaster movie or a psychological horror film. And speaking of the ending, yes, the ending this movie has just doesn't make any sense to me at all. I honestly feel that it's a very stilted way to give closure to everything that happens without any explanation and just at a very opportune moment for the main characters themselves. All this just to give a "happy ending" to this movie that I didn't like at all, honestly.
As for the characters, Eliott Moore, who is played by the well-known actor Mark Wahlberg, doesn't strike me as a bad protagonist for a thriller of this style. Of course, I'm not a big fan of his acting and acting work (most of his work being purely adult comedies). But the truth is, even among his long repertoire you can find better roles than this one, really. It's either that or the simple fact that her image in adult comedy films is hard to forget and compare with what is shown in this film. In Alma's case we can see that she starts out as the typical couple looking for fights in their marriage when she herself hides things from him. Then we see her act like a good mother by having Jess in her care for the rest of the film, but nothing more to say about that, really. Not that I'm a fan of this actress' work either, as you may notice. Otherwise, there's not much to mention about the other supporting characters. Or well, there is the odd case like the guy who talks to plants and eats Hot Dogs or the old woman in the house who has no contact with the outside world. With this second option I think it would have worked better if it was a horror movie, truth be told. But well, I guess all that we see in this movie was more of an experiment by Night Shyamalan himself in mixing horror with suspense, drama and fiction in a work of this style.

Y es que si nos ponemos más detallistas y críticos de lo que ya somos, podemos notar que incluso ciertas muertes -que es de las poquísimas cosas “buenas” que tiene esta película para ofrecer- están mal hechas. Intentando ser lo más realistas posibles, pero siempre siendo llevados a extremos inimaginables. No es que diga que no me guste esto, pero lo que diré a continuación supongo que no es algo que personalmente agregaría a una película de suspenso de este nivel, la verdad. El tema del humor que se intenta meter en ciertos momentos de la película que, más que romper el hielo o la tensión que hay, solo hace que se vea más incómodo y antinatural de lo que ya es normalmente. La forma en la que los personajes se desenvuelven entre sí también se siente un tanto extraña y forzada a veces (lo digo más por la relación que intentan darle a la pareja de casados con la niña Jess, entre otros casos). Incluso hay momentos en los que no sabes si lo que estás viendo es una película de desastres naturales con suspenso o es una película de terror psicológico. Y hablando del final, si, el final que tiene esta película simplemente no le veo ningún sentido en lo absoluto. Sinceramente siento que es una forma muy rebuscada de darle un cierre a todo lo que sucede sin ninguna explicación y justo en un momento bastante oportuno para los mismos personajes principales. Todo esto solo para darle un “final feliz” a esta película que no me gustó para nada, sinceramente.
En cuanto a los personajes, Eliott Moore, quien es interpretado por el conocido actor Mark Wahlberg no me hace un mal protagonista para una cinta de suspenso de este estilo. Claro está, no soy muy fan de su trabajo actoral e interpretativo (siendo la mayoría de sus trabajos puras cintas de comedias para adultos). Pero la verdad es que, incluso entre su largo repertorio se pueden encontrar papeles mejores que este, la verdad. Es eso o el simple hecho de que su imagen en cintas de comedia para adultos se me hace difícil de olvidar y comparar con lo que se muestra en esta cinta. En el caso de Alma se puede ver que empieza siendo la típica pareja que busca peleas en su matrimonio cuando ella misma le oculta cosas a él. Luego la vemos actuar como buena madre al tener a Jess al cuidado en el resto de la película, pero nada más que decir sobre esto, la verdad. Tampoco es que sea fan del trabajo de esta actriz, como pueden notar. De resto, no hay mucho que se pueda mencionar de los demás personajes secundarios. O bueno, hay uno que otro caso como lo es el del tipo que le habla a las plantas y come Hot Dogs o la vieja de la casa que no tiene contacto con el mundo exterior. Con esta segunda opción creo que hubiera funcionado mejor si fuera una película de terror, la verdad. Pero bueno, supongo que todo esto que vemos en esta película fue más un experimento del mismo Night Shyamalan al mezclar terror con suspenso, drama y ficción en una obra de este estilo.

But what stands out the most is the soundtrack, especially the background music that we hear throughout the film. Sometimes this mix of musical sounds helps to rescue a little of what is seen in certain scenes, thus generating some emotion and tension, even. While it is true that in everything else it falls between many failures and dislikes, in terms of the audiovisual it can be said that it is what can be best appreciated in this work. In short, this is a film I would not recommend, unless you are as much a fan of suspense as you are of deaths of all kinds.
Personally, I give it a rating of 7/10 as far as the sci-fi/suspense genre is concerned.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico y visual de esta película. Algo que sí hay que aceptar es que, en cuanto a producción de películas, Night Shyamalan tiene su toque al experimentar muy bien con estilos de fotografía, cámaras fijas en segundo plano y cámaras en movimiento tipo “metraje encontrado”. No es la primera vez que vemos este nivel de calidad y estilo en sus películas, pero en este caso supongo que en muchas ocasiones se ve muy bien, aunque en otras no tanto. Tiene escenas rápidas, otras un tanto lentas y también está la forma tan grotesca y bizarra de mostrar las diferentes muertes que vemos en esta cinta. En cuanto a los efectos prácticos, se puede decir que hizo un buen trabajo, aunque a veces se ve un tanto irreales. En cuanto a los efectos de sonido sí admito que están bien y que se puede notar bastante en ciertas ocasiones. Pero lo que más se puede destacar es la banda sonora, sobre todo la música de fondo que escuchamos durante toda la película. A veces esta mezcla de sonidos musicales ayuda a rescatar un poco lo que se ve en ciertas escenas, generando así cierta emoción y tensión, inclusive. Si bien es cierto que en todo lo demás cae entre muchos fallos y disgustos, en cuanto a lo audiovisual se puede decir que es lo que mejor se puede apreciar de esta obra. En resumen, esta es una película que no recomendaría, a menos que seas tan fan del suspenso como también de las muertes de todo tipo.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de la ciencia ficción y el suspenso.
