Hello friends, I'm here with another fascinating movie I watched titled The last voyage of the Demeter and I would like to share with you here.
The movie is about when the crew of the merchant ship Demeter sets sail from the Carpathian to London to deliver a cargo of 50 unmarked wooden crates.
However, they soon discover they're not alone, as Dracula's unholy presence turns the trip into a nightmarish fight for survival.
It begins On August 6, 1897, the merchant ship Demeter washes ashore in England. Among the wreckage found by the police is the log kept by her captain, Elliott.
One month earlier, the Demeter makes port in Varna, Bulgaria to pick up cargo for transportation to London.
The shipment, consisting of multiple large wooden crates, is transported by locals from Romania.
However, the locals refuse to load the cargo onto the ship, insisting that they must leave the area before sundown.
One of them hands the quartermaster and another crewman, a large sum of money and wishes the Demeter a safe voyage before departing with the others.
Clemens, a doctor educated at the University of Cambridge, overhears that the ship is looking for crewmen.
He attempts to convince the crew that his medical skills and knowledge of astronomy would make him a valuable asset to them.
The man rejects him and hires an older man instead, but while helping to load one of the crates, the new hire–frightened upon recognizing the dragon emblem on its shorter side–accidentally releases the tackle rope, causing the crate to fall.
Clemens witnesses the accident and saves Elliott's grandson, Toby, from being crushed by the loose crate.
The new hire declares the dragon emblem a bad omen and leaves; out of gratitude for Clemens' intervention, Elliott hires him as a replacement.
One of the crates falls and breaks open in the cargo hold. Clemens investigates and finds a woman buried in dirt inside.
She is barely alive, and he performs blood transfusions on her to treat what he believes to be an infection. Later, in the Aegean Sea, Clemens and Olgaren see a mysterious figure in the fog on deck.
The next night, all the animals aboard the ship are killed, including the ship's dog. The crew, fearing a rabies outbreak, throws them all overboard.
Anna, the secret stowaway, wakes up and warns them about a monster from Transylvania, a creature that feeds on the blood of humans.
Meanwhile, In her town they called it Dracula, to whom she was given as a slave of blood so that the monster would leave them alone.
She claims that Dracula is already aboard the ship and looking to feed, which is when she reveals several bites from the beast on her body.
Dracula hunts the crew during the night, biting Olgaren and turning him into a vampire thrall. Olgaren is restrained by being tied to a table.
He breaks free one night and, seeing Toby in the hold, begins hunting him down and traps him in the captain's quarters with Dracula.
As the crew attempts to save him, Dracula bites Toby. The next morning, the vampire Olgaren, who has been tied to the mast by the crew, bursts into flames as the sun rises.
Despite blood transfusions from his grandfather, Toby dies and is wrapped in sailcloth for his burial at sea.
During the funeral, the captain believes he sees the body moving, and unwraps it, only to see Toby open his eyes and attack him.
The vampire Toby catches fire in the sunlight, also severely burning his grandfather, before Clemens can throw Toby into the ocean.
The remaining crew members decide to try to destroy the ship and drown Dracula to prevent him from wreaking havoc once they reach London.
Find out what happened next on Netflix as the remaining crew members decide to destroy the ship and drown Dracula as the movie gets more fascinating.
The year is 1897, and a lost ship runs aground off the coast of England on the stormy night of August 6. The diaries of Captain Eliot, in charge of the doomed ship "Demeter", tell a terrifying story of what happened to the crew. Weeks before the event, the ship was preparing to sail for England. Clemens, an enlightened man with great knowledge in medicine and astronomy, has the goal of traveling to the British Isles and sees the opportunity in the Demeter to achieve it, however, he is not allowed to board it.
But by a twist of fate, Clemens is accepted as part of the crew and together they set sail for England with time, food rations and work planned. As the days go by, however, things begin to turn terrifying.
Mysterious apparitions occur, presences creep through the shadows, animals die mysteriously attacked by a stronger animal, a mysterious woman is found on the ship and a terrible mystery is the ingredients that will prepare this tasty broth of horrifying tension, fear, and blood. Will there be even one crew member who survives this cursed voyage on the sea?
It's been a while since a movie has made me feel tension, and this one has done it. This is a perfect scenario where there is no escape and you are trapped with a monster that kills in cold blood, that's enough to make your hair stand on end. So you have two choices: jump overboard or face the monster.
The story uses the resource of the characters dying one by one, each time revealing the brutal forces of the antagonist, but in this case, it is predictable, since we know who it is and what will happen next; as the introduction of the film gives us an outline.
Something to which I give recognition is that they used the image of Dracula primigenia that is that of Nosferatu (1922), the first film that adapted the novel by Bram Stoker to the cinema. We are so used to seeing the elegant, attractive, and intellectual Dracula, that we sometimes forget the true aspect of his soulless nature, or as they do in the movies Hotel Transylvania or Renfield, where they give him a very jocular personality; here we are not going to see any of that. Here we will encounter the beast, the monster, the denizen of darkness without a drop of compassion, stalking a godforsaken crew.
Something that attracts me to these supernatural-themed films is how the climax builds; even though this is a film that is always predisposed to action, it takes its time to get there by setting the stage. It knows how to place each point to reach a climax, and then reveal it to keep us on our toes,
The performances seemed normal to me, nothing out of this world, but it's not because the actors were bad, but they were limited by a script that had a very restrictive atmosphere; no improvisations or highlights in their interpretation, however, despite all this, I found that the most outstanding performance of all was that of Liam Cunningham as the Captain of the Demeter; this veteran actor knows how to make the viewer sympathize with him. I could feel his fear, charisma, pain, and transcendence into dementia. It was a great element to this very linear film; as well as necessary.
The most relevant element here is the scenario of fear and tension presented to us. I could not qualify it as a mystery, since we already know who the villain is and what he wants to do with his victims. Nor is the intense drama very relevant, because we are not interested in the lives of the characters; and even if we were, we could never empathize with them. The film is not designed for that. It was made to create a stupor in the viewer, with a set design, costumes, and makeup well done, accompanied by the use of CGI to give more relevance to the antagonist character.
But as in any great work that has its well-placed elements, there are the flaws; those that we can't help but see and that make the work not so good. I have already mentioned that the narrative arc is predictable, there are moments of tension that get lost and are not that impressive, and there is also that script that seems like it was written by an AI. The conflicts are vague and in a few dialogues they disappear, and then everyone goes back to normal as if nothing.
The ending was open and I think it was too much; I found it forced and unpleasant, and it implies that there will be a sequel; which I strongly doubt.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter is an adaptation of the seventh chapter of Stoker's famous novel that has all the elements to entertain you. It has action, a perfect setting for a horror story, a soulless monster that represents one of the world's most famous personalities, and a decent narrative that doesn't go off its planned map; with suspense, paranoia, and descent into madness, but it's all predictable. From the beginning we know what is going to happen at the end, there is only one outstanding performance and the events that occur within the plot are not memorable either.
If you don't like stories where you already know what is going to happen, because the trailer already tells you 90% of the movie, then I don't recommend you to see this, but if you are a Dracula fan and miss that bloodthirsty and cruel entity with original Nosferatu appearance, then this movie is for you.

Today we are going to talk about Dracula, that creature that was created by Bram Stoker in the late 1800s and of which there have been endless adaptations and productions. It turns out that the novel written by the Irishman has several chapters so today's movie will focus on number 7, on what happened in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea aboard the Demeter, a ship whose crew was annihilated by our vampire friend. I know that many know it but I also know that others do not, Dracula really existed? - And the answer is no, but at the same time yes, because Stoker was based on Vlad Tepes, the Impaler, a ruler of Romania who exercised his power under terror and fear.
We are used to see quite friendly versions of Dracula throughout time whether in movies, series or anime, versions mostly given by his human form but this time that will change because we will see him as he is, as a dark and sinister creature that devours every living being with the sole purpose of being able to live. I really didn't know about the existence of this film until I came across it, personally I am a fan of Dracula's story and everything that surrounds him, so I instantly found it very interesting to see this movie. Was it what I expected? - I would say yes. But well, let's go then and talk a little bit about this little part of the history of this famous vampire.
As you understand this story is based on the great ship Demeter, one that sailed the seas transporting cargo from one country to another. This was in an area of Romania and had to move some orders to London, among those orders there were some wooden boxes without any kind of identification, only had a kind of dragon as a shield. As what mattered was the money, the crew did not question anything and embarked everything without knowing the destination that awaited them. The voyage was several days long, so that crossing in the middle of the ocean would theoretically be a piece of cake for those experienced sailors, the thing is that it was not so because soon, when night fell, strange events began to occur in the depths of the Demeter.
During the almost 2 or 3 weeks that the trip lasted, the men of the Demeter had to face a creature of which they knew nothing without there being room for doubt and mistrust, I say this because there were changes in the crew at the last minute. Of course, fear gripped everyone, the sailors were very superstitious people, they had very marked rules and habits and the moment something was not in place that could be synonymous with disaster and calamity. And indeed, it was. In general terms, the first thing I can say is that the film is good, it is everything you expect, there are no surprises because you start watching it knowing what is going to happen, and you watch it without any problems, it fulfills the premise of entertaining.
It is very obvious that this is a horror film and that's why we have to qualify it as such. I have to say that I found it raw and direct because we see things that probably in other films we would not see, I can not say much but there are a couple of things that may surprise you in the sense of how certain characters die and how they show certain characters. This is part of the horror, it's not just the scares, it's the whole aura around it, how ruthless Dracula is and even the gloomy atmosphere of the ship helps a lot to intensify the experience. It is not a scary movie, at least it was not my case, but there is a tension because there is a threat on the ship that can not be escaped and that gives suspense to the day to day even though we know at all times what it is.
Another element is the gore, there is not much blood in the scenes but there is enough for us to understand the nature of Dracula and the intention of the film. As I said in this film we will see a Dracula very different from the one we are used to see, I think it is the purest and original version of the character and therefore he is painted as a savage being in acting but clearly with some conscience and intelligence. His only goal is to survive and for that he will have to kill everything that moves on that ship. I was surprised how well done he looked on screen, it is very easy for this to go wrong but I honestly feel that this was not the case, the CGI I think was a success, I noticed it very realistic.
To say something negative I thought it was a little long, I feel that they made it longer than it should have been, knowing how everything would end. The story is what it is, I already said that there is no room for plot twists, here they show you how everything happened, the expectation is to see how all the crew dies, not what is going to happen or if there is a chance to defeat Dracula. You can't say it's predictable since it's something that is written, they're just bringing it to the movies. Despite this and I repeat, it is an enjoyable film, it is very well made, the setting is incredible, being on the ship gives a sense of overwhelm and if you add to that its gloomy aspect, even better.
The characters are cool, simple but valid. We have Liam Cunningham who is the captain, David Dastmalchian, the crew chief and Corey Hawkins who is the doctor. All of them are simply at Dracula's party, they're the guests to make it all more fun, nothing more. They are not characters with whom you will have empathy or affection, maybe with a child who is out there and watch out for him, because the film is not about that, it is about a massacre that happens on a ship and the only relevant thing is that they can avoid the inevitable.
I give it a 7.5, I thought I was going to find something much worse and in the end it turned out to be a pretty decent film and perfect to watch if you are looking for a classic horror movie. It has a length of almost two hours, an hour and a half would have been perfect but well. Here's the trailer for you to take a look at.

›The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023) || Movie Review.@esther-emmanuel1025d
'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' is a unique film addition to the Dracula story universe. The budget of this film, I can't decide whether it's a big budget film or a low budget film because the setting of the movie is on a ship and the sea. Still this movie came out unique. I enjoyed watching this movie no doubt. It was entertaining and fun but I still had some issues with it which I will explain along with the review.
This movie was directed by André Øvredal with Universal Pictures as its distributor. The storyline of the film was written by Bragi F. Schut Jr. and Zak Olkewicz. The movie was based on or let me say adapted from one of the chapters from the 1897 'Dracula' novel by Bram Stoker which is titled 'The Captain's Log'. It starred Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, Woody Norman, Javier Botet (Dracula) and David Dastmalchian. The story follows how the crew of Demeter ship fought for survival while on board the legendary vampire known as Dracula.
Brief Synopsis.
On August 6, 1897, a mysterious merchant ship was found on the shores of England by the local authorities in a terrible wreckage condition. Investigating the wreckage, they discover the captain's log book and the story begins. Then the second act takes us back to four earlier times when this particular ship called Demeter docked in Varna, Bulgaria, to load cargo for London. All the cargo to be loaded consisted of large wooden crates that were marked with dragon symbols. The locals hired to load all these cargo later abandoned their job and revealed that all the wooden crates were bad luck.
On the other hand, Dr. Clemens, an educated physician with astronomy training from Cambridge, wants to join the crew, citing that his medical skills will be needed on board but was rejected by Wojchek, the right hand man of the captain of Demeter ship. In the end, Dr. Clemens was accepted on board after impressively saving Captain Elliott's grandson, Toby, from a crate disaster. Not long, they are set to start their journey for the shores of England.
As their trip continues in the Aegean Sea, Dr. Clemens and a crewmate Olgaren spot a mysterious figure in the fog on deck but they were not sure of what they saw, so they ignored their instincts. Other events followed as all the crew began to adjust and settle. However, a crate falls open below the deck, in the cargo hold. Clemens and Toby went to check but they discovered a woman who looked pale and was buried in lots of dirt. After confirming she was alive, Clemens takes her out of the cargo hold for treatment and care. Unfortunately for them, everything escalated quickly when all their livestock were mysteriously killed. Who killed all the livestocks? Who is the pale woman that was discovered below the deck?
The characters I Enjoyed.
Woody Norman as Toby
Watching this boy in this movie honestly made me considering how he impressed me in 'Cobweb (2023)' movie. His performance here was super impressive and I see a good future for this boy in Hollywood. To be honest, I want to see more of his works. His performance was fantastic, young, free, natural and very realistic. He acted as a child who loves to sail with his grandfather and his crew with the company of his dog. When his dog was killed, I felt all his emotions, his loss and then finally I felt his fear when he got killed by Dracula. It was a painful scene for me because he wasn't spared by the beast called Dracula.
David Dastmalchian as Wojchek
This guy somehow stole a lot of spotlight for himself. I loved the way he handled his role with a rigid personality. If he had taken up Dr. Clemens role, I bet he would have done so well. He is a kind of actor that cannot be typed locked or put in a box. He was amazing to watch and enjoyed his performance.
Liam Cunningham as Captain Elliot
Cunningham's performance was amazing! Regardless of the fact that his dialogues were not much, his presence was felt and he stole spotlight when he lost his grandson, Toby. It was painful scene, a. Scene that was filled with regrets and loss which he excellently portrayed all through. I enjoyed all his scenes!
My Review And Rating.
The director of this movie did a good job with the movie. The scene arrangements were excellently done and the cast were well selected except for Dr. Clemens for me (in my own opinion, he made all die on that ship because he didn't believe in folklores but believe in science. Did the science save them at the end? No it didn't.). The kill scenes were intensely portrayed in a brutal way and it was accompanied with a nice kind of gore and blood splatter.
The setting of the movie was fantastic, the costume perfectly selected, the design of Dracula was amazing and the best thing about this movie. I say so because Dracula's design evolved from a Galum-like looking creature to a full Dracula. Throughout the movie Dracula kept on changing as he feed on the crew members of the ship until the very last of them. So it was interesting and intriguing to see how Dracula kept on changing throughout the movie.
There were a lot of some intense jumpy scenes that I found interesting to watch. The visuals, cinematography and the production design was well done! Though I have a problem with the script and how some the characters were built. Some parts of the scripts were not realistic like for example, the crew are a mess especially Dr. Clemens. Him in particular came and worsen their situation. Dracula's blood slave, Anna was badly written, to me when I was watching the movie, I felt like she had a lot of information about Dracula and withholds the information until the end after Dracula has had his fill.
Also, I don't like this movie was unnecessarily lengthy, it should have been an hour and a half which would have made the movie more intense and fast-paced. That, the audience will find thrilling and exhilarating. At a time when I was watching the movie, I somehow became bored at the middle when the crew began to turn a blind to their devastating situation at hand. I was disappointed with them then.
Rating this movie, I will give 6.5 out of 10 stars. It was okay, enjoyable and entertaining. I like the fact that it is another perspective into the story of Dracula told from crew members of Demeter ship. So it was good and fresh. I would recommend the movie to lovers of paranormals and horror. Have you seen this movie? Did you enjoy it?
›'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' by André Øvredal Review: A decent Dracula story@namiks1031d
The fantasy genre has always been in a bit of a rough spot. It's one that's rich in ideas and themes but never really portrayed properly on the big screen. If you ask someone for a list of fantasy films, it's likely that they'll only really be able to think of a handful of them, and of course one of those will be the trilogy of The Lord of the Rings. It can be a bit disappointing to see genres so rich in ideas but gone overlooked, with such potential within their atmospheres and worlds created. With Universal owning much of most famous monsters created, sometimes they try to do something with them here and there, sort of attempting to throw out a cinematic universe of their own, while both being late to the party and seemingly stuck in purgatory. But sometimes we see a release that manages to to attempt to broaden the stories surrounding these monsters that most definitely do not get enough attention. Going into autumn and of course Halloween, it should be the general season to start seeing a few more attempts within the fantasy genre. Ghouls, goblins, magic, and maybe a few monsters here and there. The Last Voyage of the Demeter happens to be the first I have noticed so far. And an interesting attempt at a modern fantasy film that tells an early story of Dracula.
While I love the fantasy genre for all its potential, there's no doubt that Hollywood struggles with figuring out how to present it visually. Many films suffer from the same few problems: cheap special effects which ruin the immersion, diversion from the original story in the books, and one of the worst offenders: the total butchering of characters. This neglect of the genre has resulting in me almost having the lowest expectations possible prior to going into the films, always expecting something to be drastically wrong. It's a bad way to go about looking at films, for sure. But it also results in some unexpected surprises upon the release of something that actually isn't terrible. While I didn't read the reviews for The Last Voyage of the Demeter, my general conclusion of the film was that it actually wasn't terrible. In fact I'd place it just above average for managing to go two hours with holding my attention.
This is a simple film, so don't worry about spoilers.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter
The Last Voyage of the Demeter is to be considered an introduction, or prequel, to the story of Dracula. Placed upon a ship, the creature breaks out and hunts its unexpecting crew in the night, as they slowly discover the reality of what is taking place as things rapidly go south. This is pretty much the full extent of the story, and it takes place for the most part upon a ship of the name Demeter. This means the film takes place almost entirely aboard a ship, giving us a look at just one small location as the individuals are trapped by the vastness of the sea that surrounds. If you have read my posts in the past, I have mentioned a lot that films that take place within one general area are something I highly enjoy, but admit that are a difficult thing to pull off due to their nature of recycling through locations and requiring a lot of engagement with the audience to ensure they don't grow bored. I've seen many films which do this idea well, and a few that have tried and failed. I would place The Last Voyage of the Demeter in the positive category, for its ability to roam throughout the few locations of a ship, showing the claustrophobia its characters feel as the tensions begin to rise.
I'd say this is mostly where the thrills come from in the film. It isn't a film that likes to go super wild with showing its monster. But it does give enough to us for the audience to feel both aware and satisfied. To hide the special effects use and build atmosphere better, a lot of the film takes place at night. Of course, for a vampire story this makes sense. But from a filmmaking perspective this also can be utilised to hide set builds, special effects that may seem cheap, and focus on lighting to convey depth to the scenes. Fortunately, it wasn't a film that felt too dark in its attempts to hide things. And in these moments are often the most action, where the creature of early Dracula comes lurking out and hunting. His design is pretty good, less humanoid and more something with bat features. I quite liked it instead of it showing a simplistic human looking individual. It looked pretty good, perhaps not entirely clear that it's a vampire even. At points, I kept forgetting what this film was actually telling the story of, thinking it was just a monster going rogue. Admittedly, I did no research on the film prior to watching, nor am I familiar with its source material. Though I did read after that it doesn't follow it too closely.
While the film has quite a lot of strengths, I feel it was let down by a group of characters that didn't seem too authentic. Not quite the types we'd see aboard a ship, with knowledge of how a ship operators. That is to say they felt too model-like and tidy. In some of the costumes, it truly looked like a character was wearing a regular beanie hat that you could find in any clothing store during the colder months, not really specific to any year and certainly too new looking to show signs of wear. This happens a lot in modern fantasy films and shows, as clothing looks far too new and tidy to be believable. Of course that isn't to say all characters should look like ragged peasants, but for those who tolerate the roughness of the sea during all seasons, one might think they wouldn't wear new clothing, not would their work clothing look so clean.
To add to this, the film attempted to give us a general protagonist, but it didn't feel very interesting. After all, the main character of such a film is certainly not a member of the crew, but the monster. But the film wanted us to have the perspective of a regular individual, but never really gave us a reason to be interested in them. While it is clear that the story needed someone else to follow, I just don't think it managed to follow the right person. One of the most interesting characters felt like the captain of the Demeter, perhaps a result of just having more dialogue, of which it felt mattered to the story due to his importance aboard the ship.
As far as things go, I think the film wasn't bad at all. It could've been better, but for what it is, I'm quite surprised. It is clear the film had a decent budget, and that budget went to all the right places: the technicals over fancy actors, mostly. The performances were fine, and the actors themselves did a good job. It is just a shame that the characters themselves didn't get enough depth, purely because they were destined to get picked off and purely existed for that reason alone. But everything else? It wasn't bad at all. Decent cinematography, enough of the monster, and a story that I think worked with the runtime it had. Weaknesses here and there, but generally a decent fantasy film to prepare for the autumn atmosphere and upcoming October month.
I found this bone-chilling film on the streaming site I use and when the premise indicates that it's a paranormal thriller, I was super excited. Not for the horrors but for the action and suspense. I've seen several paranormal films, vampire and werewolf types mostly and liked them. As it turns out, this film is another narrative of the vampire king, Dracula.
The Last Voyage Of The Demeter (2023) is an American supernatural thriller/horror based on a chapter from the 1897 novel Dracula written by Bram Stoker. The chapter is titled "The Captain's Log" and this is revealed in the opening credits of the film.
The film begins on a stormy night. The police are called to check out a ship that is nearly wrecked ashore. They see it's named The Demeter. One of them finds a log book written by the captain of the ship. He opens it and begins to read the horrific account of the captain.
In a flashback, the Demeter docks at a port in Varna, Bulgaria to pick up some wooden crates bound for London. The locals who brought the crate asked the captain to ensure the crates are loaded on the ship before sunset. The captain instructs his right-hand man, Wojchek, to find able-bodied men who can sail with them to London for gold coins.
Some men line up and Wojchek picks three but turns down Clemens (played by Corey Hawkins), a doctor. When the men are loading the crates, one of them sees the insignia of a dragon on the crates and turns down the job. In the process, a crate falls and almost injures the captain's grandson. Clemens saves the boy and he's allowed to join the men on the Demeter.
As the Demeter sails, a crate falls in the hold revealing an injured and infected lady. Clemens treats her with a blood transfusion. Then strange things begin to happen. The animals on board are found dead, their throats ripped out. The girl reveals that the devil, a creature that feeds on blood is with them and there is no escape. The crew are thrown into confusion. Will these men survive the scary voyage or will they succumb to the horror that comes out only at night to feed?
Review
The plot of this film is an interesting one. It tells the audience how Dracula is transported from Bulgaria to London and none of the crew members make it to the shores of London that night. It's a part of the vampire king's story, so it's scary, eerily haunting and gory.
Director André Øvredal did a fantastic job concentrating more on imagery than other parts of the storytelling. With the visuals, the audience is spellbound by the moody and haunted atmosphere in the film. The tension of every scene is palpable as Dracula hunts the crew in a cat-and-mouse style making viewers wonder who is the vampire's next meal and who will vanquish him at the end.
The performance of the cast is outstanding. Corey Hawkins did great as the protagonist while the rest of the cast was supportive. Some parts of the film are heart-wrenching, especially parts where the captain's grandson, a young boy, sees the horrors and fights to stay alive. I wish the filmmakers did not include the boy. Children shouldn't be exposed to terrifying things like this.
The only part I wasn't impressed with was the pacing of the film at the beginning. Some scenes were slow and a little drawn out. I understood it was to build tension and suspense typical of the horror genre, but I thought they could have been shortened. With the way the movie ended, I am hoping there will be a sequel.
Overall, The Last Voyage Of The Demeter is dark, downright creepy and thrilling to watch. It's not for the fainthearted because of the gory scenes but I'll recommend it to horror lovers. I give it 3.9 stars out of 5.
