  1. Film Review: The Man with One Red Shoe (1985)@drax1654d

These days CIA is portrayed as noble and heroic institution whose agents selflessly defend America and Free World and whose words, when they appear as commentators on cable news, should never be questioned. At least this is the view of American establishment or its part which is currently aligned with Hollywood. Few decades ago, however, US cinema industry had much different view of CIA, more in line with speculations about sinister force flooding the American streets with cocaine or assassinating presidents. Films that take the middle ground between the two and portray CIA as dysfunctional, corrupt and incompetent as the rest of the society, are quite rare. One of them was The Man with One Red Shoe, 1985 comedy directed by Stan Dragotti.

The film represents remake of The Tall Blonde Man with One Black Shoe, 1972 French comedy directed by Yves Robert and starring Pierre Richard, which became huge hit and got a sequel. The American version begins in Morocco where CIA operation goes wrong, resulting in massive cocaine shipment intercepted by authorities and embarrassing scandal that would lead to Senate investigative hearings. The operation was deliberately sabotaged by Burton Cooper (played by Dabney Coleman), deputy director of CIA who hopes the current director Ross (played by Charles Durning) would be forced to resign and thus allow him to take over the Agency. Ross is quite aware of that and, knowing that his house is bugged, decides to mislead Cooper by concocting the story about mysterious operative with information that would clear his name. His subordinate Brown (played by Edward Herrmann) is sent to airport to randomly pick a person that would play that part and thus bring time and resources of Cooper and his cohorts. His choice happens to be Richard Drew (played by Tom Hanks), concert violinist and aspiring composer who happens to arrive on airport wearing mismatched shoes, one of them being red. Cooper immediately sends his agents to follow and investigate mysterious man. Drew soon begins to see strange men and strange events happening around him, all while having an illicit affair with Paula (played by Carrie Fisher), flautist and wife of his best friend Morris (played by Jim Belushi). Drew soon becomes more interested in Maddy (played by Lori Singer), beautiful woman who happens to be part of Cooper’s team and who gradually falls in love Drew and wants to protect him after realising that he isn’t a spy.

Unlike the French original, The Man with One Red Shoe failed at the box office. That could be best explained with the new version not relying that much of simple comedy of errors, and more on slapstick and action, which makes the complicated plot too much of a burden. As a result, plot resolution happens too quickly and without much catharsis. Use of dark-tinted glasses as identification of spooks is a joke that wears off too quickly. Film, on the other hand, benefits from a diverse and mostly good cast that does what it can with sometimes underwritten and thankless roles. That includes Hanks, who was at the time best known as comedic actor, but who is in many ways inferior to Richard in original film. Lori Singer leaves much better impression, although many in the audience would better remember extremely low-cut dress her character wears in her scene than any line she says. Director Stan Dragotti, like Robert in the original version, keeps the pace quick and this makes film watchable, but not good enough to recommend it to anyone apart from most dedicated among Tom Hanks’ fans.
