Misleading Recommendations: A Disappointing Review Of “The Other Zoey”@justfavour540d

After binge-reading for hours, I needed to take a break, relax my muscles and brain, and feast my eyes on something unrelated to school books. For me, the best way to do this is to watch a movie. Usually, anime is my go-to choice. Unfortunately, I had already watched all 37 episodes of Death Note that I had downloaded. So, I had to resort to watching The Other Zoey, a movie my friend recommended. Although I had seen the trailer on Instagram and found it captivating, I knew better than to fall in love with a movie based solely on its trailer. After watching the trailer, I scrolled past it without giving it another thought. Interestingly, fate had other plans, and I ended up watching the movie anyway. My friend, who is a lover of K dramas and American Romantic Dramas, recommended that I watch this movie. In her words, “It is really nice, you're not going to regret watching it.” Although I didn't regret watching it- it helped me battle boredom and stretch my muscles-the movie is far from “really nice.”

PLOT

The Other Zoey was probably written by a screenwriter who hated their job and was forced to do it or an underpaid writer who wanted to get back at their boss. Regardless of whichever is true, this movie is not a “really nice” one as my friend claimed. The movie revolves around a techy college student named Zoey Miller (Josephine Langford). Unlike many American teenagers, Zoey has closed her heart and mind to the concept of true love and believes that relationships should be all about compatibility. In simple words, true love should be about “ticking boxes.” The movie introduces Zach MacLaren (Drew Starkey), the captain of the school’s football team. Unlike Zoey, he is not so academically inclined, but he is every girl’s dream and he's good at what he does. Zach is in a relationship with a soccer star and public figure, Zoey Wallace (another Zoey).

The plot starts getting interesting when Zach gets into a minor accident, hitting his head hard on the ground, resulting in temporary amnesia. Zoey Miller happens to be at the accident scene and Zach mistakes her for his girlfriend, Zoey Wallace. Zach is rushed to the hospital, where his Doctor tells Zoey and his parents not to give him any bad news that would upset him as this could cause him to lose his memories permanently. Zoey Miller decides to keep playing the role of Zoey Wallace, his girlfriend, planning to pretend until he recovers. Up until this moment, I enjoyed the movie. Why not? The plot flowed seamlessly. Although there were tiny flaws, Zoey and Zach played their roles well to this point. Until…

The movie introduces Miles MacLaren (Archie Renaux), who put off one of the worst actings I’d ever seen in a long while. Miles is the perfect definition of bad acting. “Come on, bro! Do better.” His body movement was poor, his facial expressions didn't do justice, and his speech was unconvincing. His character was supposed to portray a smart person – a genius with a very high IQ. Although his lines were well-written, he delivered them in a way that seemed mismatched to the role. It was as if the producers ran out of money and had to bring a waiter out of somewhere.

Our big Miles here happens to share the same ideologies about love and compatibility as Zoey Miller. In Zach’s parent's house, Zoey meets Miles and the two start a thing… ouuu! I didn't see this coming at all. Of course, I did! I saw that scene coming even before I started watching the movie. While pretending to be Zach’s girlfriend, Zoey gets attracted to Miles, Zach’s cousin and they share a kiss in a steamy hot tub scene. Big shocker! The next morning, Zoey finds out Miles has a girlfriend and that they are Poly. In simple words, the kiss meant nothing to him. She decides to spend the day with Zach. She realizes that Zach isn't as bad as she thought. In fact, he is super smart in his own way and she wants back in. In the next scene, Zach’s real girlfriend- the real Zoey- interrupts and Zach regains his memories. Will Zach still love the fake Zoey or will he forget their one-day fun and get back with his real girlfriend?

This movie felt like it was written by a bunch of high school students who still have a lot to learn before diving into the world of screenwriting. Before a movie can be considered good, all elements have to be in place. When a few of those elements aren't in place, the movie becomes a flop. As if I've not had enough, the movie ends with a cliche- the usual way all(most) American romance dramas like this one end. Even a toddler could have predicted the resolution of this movie.

The Other Zoey gets a 3 out of 10 from me. It gets a three because the first 20 minutes weren't so bad. Plus, only a few characters played their role well.

Many may not know this because I do not look it and I sure do not act like it but I'm a huge lover of love. One reason why I do not speak about it so often is because the majority of people have this stereotype that love is supposed to be all rainbows and sunshine. They forget that hail storms,hurricanes and earthquakes are a thing too and they happen.

Today, I saw a movie that reminded me that I had an emotional part,hehe. The other Zoey is the movie I'm talking about. Right from the title, I suspected that there would be some form of confusion surrounding the movie. Was I wrong? Only one way to find out.

This movie reminds me so much of how I felt when I realized that there were two other people in my faculty bearing the same name as me. I felt so disturbed. What if my namesake committed a crime and the crime was traced to me?

About The Movie

The other Zoey is a rom com about a brilliant college student who makes it a point of duty to challenge the conventional idea of love and dating. Her views soon take a swift turn when a patient who just suffered a mild concussion leading to temporary memory loss crosses path with her.

Their contact was a really interesting one because these are two people from entirely different worlds. People that could easily pass as staunch enemies due to their differences but like they say, unlike poles always attract each other.

The other Zoey is a romance comedy drama film directed by Sara Zendieh and released on the 20th of October 2023. It is a spirit filled one hour and twenty-five minutes movie with more than enough thrills.

Josephine Langford as Zoey Miller

All I could say each time Zoey came on screen was "she's so pretty". I doubt anyone would want to argue about this fact.

Zoey Miller played the role of a very proactive nerd who didn't believe in love and rested well with the saying "if people didn't know about love, they probably wouldn't have been falling in love". This saying made me have second thoughts.

Along the line, all her beliefs and ideas were countered and I can say that she found an imperfectly perfect match.

Drew Starkey as Zach MacLaren

Zach was the school's best soccer player. Those soccer players which every girl admired from a corner. But there was something different about him, he wasn't the prideful type.

Zach happened to be the amnesia patient who played a big role in turning a hopeless romantic into a hopeful romantic.

Archie Renaux as Miles

Miles played the roles of Zach's cousin who came over for the weekend. Miles was super smart which led Zoey to see him as attractive.

Miles apparently didn't care so much about the un-smart part of life. He was the perfect description of a nerd but a hot nerd as described in the movie.

Mallorie Johnson as Elle

Elle was a vibe on her own. She acted out her role as Zoey's best friend perfectly. She reminds me so much of my best friend; supportive, persuasive, fun to be with, amongst other things.

Ella was an art enthusiast who believed in love and its possibilities unlike her bestfriend.Elle played a great role in helping Zoey open up and embrace the world for what it truly is.

My Opinion

This was a really interesting watch, I must say. A movie that can effortlessly evoke the romantic part of anyone. I like how well the movie progressed right from the start till the end.

One other thing I must commend about the movie is the cluelessness it bestowed on its viewers. Regular rom coms just go straight to the point and this makes them so predictable. This wasn't the case with this movie. Other factors came into play, creating a very intriguing diversion before the final bombshell was dropped on us.

As you would imagine, it ended with everyone happy; including the most cherished viewers. Now that I think of it, I haven't actually seen a rom com that ended tragically. Have you?

Recommendation.

Without a doubt, I would wholeheartedly recommend this movie to everyone and anyone. It is a great way to keep in touch with your feelings and get entertained at the same time.

Me tome una semana de vacaciones de Hive, y como lo pudieron ver en mi post anterior, parte de mi decisión de irme de vacaciones fue porque se acercaba mi cumpleaños y quería unos días de descanso, aunque no podía tener un descanso absoluto porque sigo en pasantías y además ya comenzaron las clases, al menos podía tener unas pequeñas vacaciones de Hive, y justamente éste tiempo lo he empleado para ver algunas películas y series, mejor dicho para ver un K-drama del que luego les hablaré, pero también para ver ésta película cuyo tráiler vi por casualidad y me dejó enganchada, obviamente al ser del género romántico era casi mi obligación verla y traerles mi opinión, así que hoy hablaremos del reciente estreno de Prime Video titulado La Otra Zoey 💕.

I took a week off from Hive, and as you could see in my previous post, part of my decision to go on holiday was because my birthday was approaching and I wanted a few days off, although I couldn't have an absolute rest because I'm still in internships and also classes have already started, at least I could have a little holiday from Hive, and I used this time to watch some movies and series, better said to watch a K-drama that I will tell you about later, but also to watch this movie whose trailer I saw by chance and got me hooked, obviously being of the romantic genre it was almost my obligation to watch it and bring you my opinion, so today we will talk about the recent release of Prime Video titled The Other Zoey 💕.

Esta comedia romántica básicamente nos cuenta la historia de amor entre Zoey Miller y Zach, un jugador de soccer que un día tras un pequeño accidente en su bicicleta presenta un breve episodio de amnesia, y este lo lleva a creer que Zoey es su novia. Zoey es estudiante de informática y particularmente es una escéptica del amor romántico, de hecho pretende probar a través de una app que las relaciones se dan exclusivamente por compatibilidad, por lo que cuando tiene su primer encuentro con Zach lo descarta completamente por “incompatibilidad” de gustos y personalidades, aun sin saber todo lo que pasaría después entre ellos.

This romantic comedy basically tells the love story between Zoey Miller and Zach, a soccer player who one day after a small accident on his bike has a brief episode of amnesia, and this leads him to believe that Zoey is his girlfriend. Hablemos primero de la trama dentro de la trama 🤣, o mejor dicho del triángulo amoroso que nos presenta la película (porque siempre debe haber uno), y es que días antes de que ocurra el accidente de Zach, Zoey conoce a un chico que casualmente también comparte su postura escéptica con respecto al amor, y obviamente para ella eso representa un punto de compatibilidad importante, por lo que en lo que tiene la oportunidad de acercarse a él e intentar establecer algún tipo de relación, no la desaprovecha. Sin embargo, esta oportunidad se presenta después del accidente porque casualmente éste chico es primo de Zach, obviamente el triángulo amoroso se tenía que presentar con un familiar del protagonista 🤣, y para ser completamente sincera este hecho no me agradó del todo y es que siento que la manera en como se desarrollo todo fue bastante tóxica, teniendo en cuenta que al primo del protagonista le valió poco (por no decir nada) involucrarse de cierta manera con la que se creía era la novia de su primo, así que desde mi punto de vista fue algo no agradable de ver.

However, this opportunity is presented after the accident because this guy happens to be Zach's cousin, obviously the love triangle had to be presented with a relative of the protagonist 🤣, and to be completely honest this fact did not please me at all and I feel that the way everything developed was quite toxic, considering that the cousin of the protagonist was worth little (if not nothing) to get involved in a certain way with what was believed to be the girlfriend of his cousin, so from my point of view it was something not pleasant to see.

Aun así, aunque no me haya gustado el tema de incorporar este elemento a la trama, si debo admitir que había más química en esta pareja que en los protagonistas, y esto realmente no lo resalto porque no haya sentido que los protagonistas hicieran a fin de cuentas una buena pareja, sino porque siento que todo su desarrollo amoroso ocurrió tan rápido que no me dieron la oportunidad de procesar y sentir que ellos se estaban enamorando, de hecho todo su desarrollo ocurre en un día, mientras que con el otro interés amoroso hay al menos dos días de trama, y tienen más escenas que promueven la química en la pantalla. Sin embargo, Zach como protagonista es un personaje bastante lindo, podría decir que la tóxica aquí fue ella, porque realmente él fue un personaje bastante lindo, amigable, honesto y genuino, a quien básicamente engañaron gran parte de la película, así que como protagonista masculino de una comedia romántica, tiene un 10/10.

Still, even though I didn't like the theme of incorporating this element into the plot, if I must admit that there was more chemistry in this couple than in the main characters, and I don't really highlight this because I didn't feel that the main characters ultimately made a good couple, but because I feel that all their love development happened so fast that I wasn't given the chance to process and feel that they were falling in love, in fact all their development happens in one day, while with the other love interest there is at least two days of plot, and they have more scenes that promote chemistry on screen. However, Zach as the main character is a pretty cute character, I could say that the toxic one here was her, because really he was a pretty cute, friendly, honest and genuine character, who basically got cheated on for most of the movie, so as a masculine protagonist of a romantic comedy, he gets a 10/10.

Pero de todos los personajes mis favoritos fueron la hermana de Zach y la mejor amiga de Zoey, definitivamente ellas son el alma de esta película, sobre todo la hermana de Zach quien en este caso representa completamente el sentido de comedia de esta historia 🤣, lo cual viene super bien porque ante todo el drama que genera la parte romántica, la comedia un tanto ligera que ofrece este personaje, hace de la historia más llevadera. Honestamente me encanta como las comedias románticas hacen ver a los universitarios como adolescentes 🤣, de verdad me parece super refrescante 🤣. En cuanto al final, pues si ya teníamos una película llena de clichés, evidentemente debemos tener la típica escena de vergüenza ante el público al mejor estilo de la mayoría de las historias románticas, que realmente no me gusta pero se que es un elemento sumamente usado para dar cierres a estas historias, la me habría gustado ver y conocer más sobre la relación de Zoey con su mamá y su mejor amiga, pero realmente eso es algo que poco pasa en estas peliculas, asi que tampoco puedo quejarme demasiado de esto.

But of all the characters my favourites were Zach's sister and Zoey's best friend, they are definitely the soul of this movie, especially Zach's sister who in this case completely represents the sense of comedy of this story 🤣, which is great because before all the drama that generates the romantic part, the somewhat light comedy that this character offers, makes the story more bearable. I honestly love how romantic comedies make college students look like teenagers 🤣 I really find it refreshing 🤣. As for the ending, well if we already had a movie full of clichés, obviously we must have the typical embarrassment scene in front of the audience in the best style of most romantic stories, which I really don't like but I know it's a very used element to give closure to these stories, I would have liked to see and know more about Zoey's relationship with her mum and her best friend, but really that's something that rarely happens in these movies, so I can't complain too much about it either.

La película cumple su función de ser entretenida y al menos a mi me gusto, aun sin no es lo mejor que puedes encontrar en este género, pero la verdad es que últimamente este es el común denominador del género romántico, siento que en los últimos años pocas producciones logran crear historias innovadoras o que al menos usen los elementos clásicos del género de una forma armoniosa y bien llevada, que logre ser absolutamente entretenida y que además resulta memorable, por tal motivo a este película yo le doy un 7/10, para nada es una película mala, pero como ya mencione se pueden conseguir algunas mejores. Recuerden que se encuentra disponible en Prime Video, y diganme su opinion si ya la vieron, y si no es el caso les invito a que vayan a verla 💕.
The film fulfills its function of being entertaining and at least I liked it, even if it is not the best you can find in this genre, but the truth is that lately this is the common denominator of the romance genre, I feel that in recent years few productions manage to create innovative stories or at least use the classic elements of the genre in a harmonious and well conducted, which manages to be absolutely entertaining and also memorable, for that reason I give this film a 7/10, it is not a bad movie, but as I mentioned you can get some better ones.
