    Outsider

    Outsider

    [English Version]

The world of finance is very interesting, from time to time I check on social networks some movie, documentary or series to see that it has some kind of financial content, I found on an Instagram page a parody video about a trader who does not do a good risk management based on a scene from Outsider, I laughed a lot and I watched that little video several times, until I decided to look for this film.

It is a French film on YouTube that shows a story based on true events, about the life, success and downfall of a trader who made a lot of money, but then makes the institution lose more than 4 billion euros.

    A film for traders

In the new world of finance that is developing under blockchain technology, many want to be successful traders, to buy low and sell high, a rule that seems very simple, but in practice is one of the most difficult and emotionally draining professions in the modern world.

In particular I like this world of traders, I think it is a dream job, but it takes several years of learning to achieve profitability, so I like this kind of movies, where the market is the real protagonist.

This film immediately introduces us to the life of a young man who wants to succeed as a trader, we watch him climb the ladder and create a strategy that earns him a lot of money at the bank.

This is a film that is not very technical, it is not a complicated plot beyond the repercussions or bets in the market, in fact, one of the most common words in the script is "bets" knowing that it is a fundamental and technical analysis that is handled in this type of work, especially for large financial services corporations.

Unlike the film The Big Short, there is not much explanation of financial issues, the focus is more on the experience and, above all, the rollercoaster of emotions of being a professional trader.

How did you withstand the pressure?

For those who have experienced trading, many will recognise that psychology has a lot to do with it, perhaps with low amounts it doesn't affect much, but when you apply leverage it can turn trading into an extreme sport.

In the film this trader uses a lot of leverage, putting a lot of pressure on his shoulders, because the risk is multiplied and he can lose a lot of money, so many (including myself) wonder how someone can over leverage and not succumb to the psychological pressure.

    Risk Management

For the mental stability of the trader, there must be risk management based on a trading plan, however, these strategies vary from person to person because everyone has different psychological characteristics, keeping in mind that everyone is looking for profitability in their trading.

The film deals with this intrepid trader who likes to go against the market, one of those basic warnings when starting this profession, however, this strategy allows him to make a lot of money at times, but why does he lose more than he gained?

    Emotions

Emotional intelligence is a vital aspect for a trader, knowing how to behave and take a loss may seem obvious, but it costs a lot to know how to manage emotions when the market is against you, however, there is another aspect that often tends to forget, is the euphoria when you win, that's right, the trader must control the emotions when losing and winning because it can make you make mistakes.

A common mistake of being carried away by euphoria is to want to overtrade with leverage, to feel that you own the market and that the strategy will not fail, to bet everything on everything, something that must be controlled based on the risk management mentioned above.

    Source

Another of those important aspects for traders is knowing how to separate those emotions with family or important people, not letting annoying losses affect relationships, or keeping in mind that they don't own the market when they take profits.

    Some Comedy

The film tries to be comedic, however, it is half-hearted in its scenes, evoking that crazy Wolf of Wall Street type life of traders facing the pressures of the profession, balanced with slapstick and partying, although this film does not use drugs or many sensual scenes so it is more restrained in that respect.

    Final Opinion

Perhaps it is not an attractive film for everyone, however, within the financial field is an entertaining production and with several teachings, not technical but emotional, that affect traders, particularly I find it a very good choice of entertainment considering that on YouTube is available, even in Latin Spanish.

I feel it is an interesting film for those who want to know a little more about this profession so mentally demanding and know how to control our emotions and the risk we take after a euphoric victory on the chart.

    Do I recommend it?

Yes, it is a very interesting and entertaining film for those who like financial content and who are attracted by the profession of the trader that captures the attention of many people right now, I hope you can enjoy it.

  2. The Outsider (film): Unsurpisingly disappointing@gooddream2592d

After watching the trailer for this movie I have to admit that I did not go into it expecting it to be very good and it certainly delivered on that assumption. It wasn't terrible, but it was completely unrealistic and had a few features of "foreign language films" that I always scoff at.

    The-Outsider-poster.jpg source

Starring Jared Leto as well as a bunch of other people that I don't know because they are Japanese movies stars (save a few white people cameos such as a brief appearance from Emile Hirsch) this film is almost entirely in Japanese so get ready for some subtitles.

The story begins with Leto being in a Japanese prison for reasons the film does not explain. He initially saves the life of a fellow inmate who happens to be Yakuza (famous Japanese mob.) Later, because of his actions, the Yakuza family takes Nick under their wing and later offers him a job (should have mentioned this previously that Nick is Leto's character name.)

    outsider2018-2.jpg source

Thus begins a completely impractical storyline where an American is not only a member of Yakuza, but a high-ranking officer in it. I don't know if you know much about Yakuza, but it is for the most part an incredibly xenophobic and patriotic organization and therefore it is exceptionally unlikely that a non-Japanese person would be allowed in their ranks, especially someone who doesn't even speak Japanese.

    the-outsider-netflix.jpg source

Because Nick does a favor or two for the crime family, he is adopted by the boss and is now a "son" of his. He then gets his entire body tattooed, confirming his lifelong membership in the group. I am intentionally being vague because this film, while completely impractical, does have some nice moments - therefore I am not going to reveal much of the story.

Nick is presented as being a quiet member of the group because that is simply his personality. However, I know the real reason and it is quite obvious. Jared Leto can not speak Japanese and that is evident in the camera angles that they use to position behind his head or having him in dark scenes anytime that he speaks more than one word in Japanese - which is almost certainly overdubbed at that point.

I always find it irritating when someone in any movie somehow manages to understand ALL of a foreign language that is spoken to them, but can barely utter a few words. This is clearly what is going on here. I have a hard enough time getting on board with Nick being accepted in their ranks at all and even a harder time believing that he understands the complex instructions given to him by the boss when up to the point the only words he has said in Japanese was "guard!" or "gun!"

Mostly torn apart by critics both professional and common-folk like me, The Outsider has some moments but is mostly a difficult to follow story that is actually kind of dumb and repetitive. There are some interesting scenes but for the most part this movie's only selling point was that it has Jared Leto in it and to me, that really isn't enough.

On a scale of "Urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I award The Outsider the overall score of......
