Terrible Adaptation! Postcard killings (2020) || Movie Review.@esther-emmanuel521d
This movie has been on my watchlist for 5 years. I'd been holding off from watching it because of two things. First, I didn't want the producers to destroy the unforgettable memory I have of the book this movie was adapted from and lastly, I was scared that the adaptation wouldn't impress me. At the end of day, my greatest fear came to haunt me and I would never forgive the producers and director for this.
”Postcard Killings (2024)” is a crime film that was based on James Patterson’s book titled The Postcard Killers (2010). It was directed by Danis Tanović by eight people including James Patterson. It starred Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Famke Janssen, Cush Jumbo, Joachim Król, Naomi Battrick, and Ruairi O'Connor.
A Snippet Of The Plot.
A New York police detective Jacob Kanon and his wife arrived in Europe from London to collect their daughter's body who was on her honeymoon after she was murdered by a serial killer. This was heartbreaking news for both of them as they discovered that the killer poses the couples bodies to mimic great works of art.
Jacob had to stay behind to get information on the murder case of his daughter, but the detective in charge was not forthcoming with information he wanted. So Jacob took the matter into his own hands to track down the killer himself. Was it easy for him to do?
However, Jacob tracked down a reporter who was somehow involved in the serial killer’s cases to try to get some information from her. Dessie the reporter finally gives in to Jacobs proposal but has a hidden agenda. Who is this serial killer? Why does he pick young couples for his atrocious deeds?
Why This Movie Was A Failed Adaptation.
Like I said earlier in the beginning of this movie, I was disappointed with the adaptation. I wish I didn't watch this movie at all. However, I was pushed to watch the movie because of Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Famke Janssen. These two actors are always good with their roles in any movie they appear in. I wanted to see their performance but in the end, their talent was wasted in this movie regardless of how hard they tried.
This movie was a failed adaptation because the storyline of the book and the movie were totally two different stories. The only familiarity between the book and movie are the names of the characters. Even though James Patterson was part of the production team, I doubt he was there when decisions were made about the plot of the movie. That was highly disappointing.
The producers and director didn't read the book before going ahead to produce the motion pictures. From the movie, it was obvious that they never cared about the book, the author's work, and the characters of the story. What they all cared about was the money.
My Review And Rating Excluding The Book.
If I were to review this movie as a viewer who has no idea that it is based on a book or as someone who hasn't read the book, I would say this movie was a slow pace crime that lacked substance over style.
It is a movie that starts slow, then continues at that pace till the end. The outlook of the movie is not colourful but depressing. Using a colour to describe it, I would say grey. The storyline was averagely good but has lots of potholes and missing subplots. The mystery and twist in the story was not properly written. There was no suspense to this movie because the audience got to know too much right from the beginning.
The story arc was weak and there was no tension for a crime movie. It was easily predictable and the antagonist was easily identified. There was no eerie mystery surrounding the antagonist character, some scenes were overstretched and towards the middle where there is supposed to be suspense, everything turned into a bland murder procedural.
Directing style was quite decent but not impressive. There were a lot of annoying fade-ins to out-of-focus dizzying shots. The cinematography was okay however, it wasn't impressive too. Casting and performances were manageable regardless of the fact that the main actors put in their best.
Rating this movie as person who has read the book it was based on, I will give it 1 out 10 stars. I was disappointed. I wouldn't recommend the movie to those who have read the book.
Rating the movie as a person who hasn't read the book, I will give it 6 out 10 stars. Be warned, this is not a thrilling crime movie. It a slow paced one that lacks substance.

Sin embargo, netflix como casi nunca pasa, me ha recomendado el día de hoy ver "El asesino de las postales". Una trama llena de mucho suspenso, homicidios pero de esos que tienen un mensaje en específico, o más bien una clave para descubrir la verdad sobre esa persona que está incurriendo en un asesinato serial.
However, netflix as almost never happens, recommended me today to watch "The Postcard Killings". A plot filled with a lot of suspense, homicides but of those that have a specific message, or rather a key to discover the truth about that person who is incurring in a serial murder.
Lo triste es que ha empezado con el asesinato de la hija de un detective que queda totalmente destrozado al ver la escena del crimen y lo que ha quedado del cuerpo de su hija.
The sad thing is that it has started with the murder of the daughter of a detective who is totally devastated to see the crime scene and what is left of his daughter's body.
Hablando de la escena del crimen, hay algo en particular en todo esto y es que el asesino tiene un cierto gusto por el drama en cuanto a la forma y el modo operandi que aplica con sus víctimas, empezando por arrancar partes de su cuerpo y moldearlo en un sentido que le de imagen a un arte en específico.
Speaking of the crime scene, there is something in particular in all this and is that the murderer has a certain taste for drama in terms of the form and mode of operation that applies with their victims, starting to tear off parts of his body and mold it in a sense that gives image to a specific art.
Aquí podemos notar que para el homicida estas escenas son puro arte de admirar, una forma de resucitar en carne propia ese arte muerto. Para las familias de las víctimas la peor forma en que pueden mirar a su ser querido muerto y usado para algo tan nefasto como el arte pagado con la muerte.
Here we can notice that for the murderer these scenes are pure art to admire, a way to resurrect in the flesh that dead art. For the families of the victims the worst way they can look at their loved one dead and used for something as nefarious as art paid for with death.
Sin embargo, considero que hay un cierto patrón o ensañamiento con la primera víctima siendo que en casi todas las escenas de homicidios posteriores se encontraba ya sea una parte del cuerpo de la hija del detective o una prenda en particular de la misma víctima.
However, I feel that there is a certain pattern or overkill with the first victim being that at almost every subsequent murder scene there was either a body part of the detective's daughter or a particular garment of the same victim.

However, with the help of a journalist, the detective begins to tackle certain key clues of the different cases, since they all shared something in common and that is certain postcards that were sent anonymously with a poetic and particular message that has to do with the crime scene, that is, a phrase that leads to the art described in the flesh.
Hay que destacar la inteligencia y el trabajo de esta periodista pues su secto sentido le hace ver que detras de estas horrendas escenas y de las pistas había una historia o razón por la cual esta persona o más bien, esta pareja de jóvenes se convirtieron en los asesinos por el arte.

It's amazing the mind game on this particular point, because it not only made me doubt, but also question a little bit and kind of justify in a way what they were doing. Of course they don't do it the way I would like them to, but I think everybody has the right to love.

Curiosamente quien hace del detective siento que le agarre odio por su participación en la temporada 6 en adelante de la serie The Walking Dead. Sin embargo, verlo en esta película me hizo cambiar un poco de parecer porque es algo más íntimo y frágil.
Oddly enough, the one who plays the detective I feel I hated because of her participation in season 6 and onwards of The Walking Dead series. However, seeing him in this movie made me change my mind a bit because it's something more intimate and fragile.
Definitivamente es una tremenda película, creo que es un arte que si bien no siento orgullo por todo lo que implica la trama, es bastante interesante la forma en que escudriñan las mentes y razones de estos asesinos y lo tan magnífico que es la idea de crear arte por medio de homicidios, descabellado, pero magnífico, pues se trata de cine, y esto lo ha sido por completo.

La verdad es que la introducción del personaje principal es muy interesante, porque en las primeras horas parece un hombre muy fuerte pero dolido por la muerte de su hija, las imágenes de la escena del crimen son muy particulares y un poco impactantes al menos para mí, debo decir que desde que la película inicia plantea como varias incógnitas que como espectadora me colocan en expectativa, además que conforme pasan las escenas más patrones aparecen.
The truth is that the introduction of the main character is very interesting, because in the first hours he seems a very strong man but hurt by the death of his daughter, the images of the crime scene are very particular and a little shocking at least for me, I must say that since the film starts raises several unknowns that as a viewer put me in expectation, plus as the scenes pass more patterns appear.

De esas películas que mientras avanzan se van poniendo más interesantes, la aparición del personaje de Dessie una periodista estadounidense residenciada en Europa definitivamente le da un plus muy interesante a esta cinta. Además que los demás asesinatos arman un enigma muy interesante alrededor de la investigación que lleva Jacob, de hecho llega un punto en el que te vuelves mini detective y comienzas a hacer miles de teorías en tu cabeza que poco a poco se van destruyendo, o confirmando.
The appearance of Dessie, an American journalist living in Europe, definitely gives a very interesting plus to this film. In addition to the other murders, the other murders create a very interesting enigma around Jacob's investigation, in fact there comes a point where you become a mini detective and you start to make thousands of theories in your head that are gradually destroyed or confirmed.

Me gusta que a pesar de ser una película larga no se haya convertido para nada en algo predecible, me gusta la manera en la que explican los motivos de la mayoría de los acontecimientos y como todo va tomando forma lentamente, dejándome completamente sorprendida. Sin duda alguna deja entre ver una segunda parte y me gustaría ver eso sobre todo porque siento que la historia da para mucho más.
I like that despite being a long movie it didn't become predictable at all, I like the way they explain the reasons for most of the events and how everything slowly takes shape, leaving me completely surprised. It certainly leaves between seeing a second part and I would like to see that especially because I feel that the story gives for much more.

Es una película que no esperaba ver y que realmente tampoco escuche en muchísimas partes, pero que me gustó muchísimo, me suelen gustar las tramas así que tienen una gran historia a pesar de su tinte misterioso y dramático. Esta es una película inspirada en una novela literaria que ahora quiero leer.
Si eres una persona que disfruta de tramas misteriosas pero con un trasfondo importante y enigmático esta película al igual que a mi te sorprenderá, es una película que también maneja escenarios muy lindos y compensa en ese sentido lo cruda que puede llegar a ser la historia.
Esta cinta cinematográfica es una de esas que voy a volver a ver, y que realmente recomiendo si esta entre tus gustos.
It's a movie that I didn't expect to see and didn't really listen to in many parts, but I liked it a lot, I usually like plots like this that have a great story despite its mysterious and dramatic tinge. This is a movie inspired by a literary novel that I now want to read.
If you are a person who enjoys mysterious plots but with an important and enigmatic background, this movie will surprise you as well as me, it is a movie that also handles very nice scenarios and compensates in that sense how raw the story can be.
This film is one of those that I will see again, and that I really recommend if it is among your tastes.
