The Rite tells the story of young Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue) who in order to leave his home decides to become a priest. His father Istvan Kovak (Rutger Hauer) is a rather cold man who is the manager of a funeral home. Istvan (as well as most fathers) wanted his son Michael to work with him in the funeral home and to dedicate himself to that, Michael who had a rather bad relationship with his father wanted to do anything but work and be with him, since after the death of his loving mother his dad was the one who prepared her corpse and made Michael help him and he didn't take into account how younger he was. That experience haunted Michael and he decided to take the exam for priests, he passed and even without a vocation he decided to go. Michael was about to give up when a father showed interest in him and suggested that he train to become an exorcist. Even though he knew what a crazy proposition it was he encourage him to give it a try. There he meets Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) who will show him the dark side of the faith.

El Rito cuenta la historia del joven Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue) quién con el fin de dejar su casa decide convertirse en sacerdote. Su padre Istvan Kovak (Rutger Hauer) es un hombre bastante frío que es el encargado de una funeraria. Istvan (así como la mayoría de los padres) quería que su hijo Michael trabajara con él en la funeraria y que se dedicará a eso, Michael que tenía una relación bastante mala con su padre quería hacer cualquier cosa excepto trabajar y estar con él, ya que después de la muerte de su cariñosa madre su papá fue el que preparó su cadáver e hizo que Michael lo ayudará siendo tan pequeño. Esa experiencia perseguía a Michael y decidió hacer el examen para sacerdotes, lo aprobó y aún sin tener vocación decidió ir para alejarse de su padre. Michael estaba a punto de desistir cuando un padre muestra interés a él y le propone que se entrene para convertirse en exorcista. A pesar de que sabía de qué era una propuesta descabellada lo animó a que lo intentara. Allí conoce al padre Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) quien le mostrará el lado oscuro de la fe.

Exorcism movies have certain characteristics that I have always found attractive: such as the change of voices, speaking in another language and that part where the demon, spirit or entity knows all the secrets of those around them and use that to play with their minds. In this horror film beyond that what is more present is how intense the scenes are, it is something common in these movies with exorcism themes but this film in particular is accompanied by dialogues that if you add the level of intensity so high, results in a masterpiece that took my breath away. I was also surprised by the high level of acting of the entire cast and the commitment that can be seen when playing these roles that are anything but easy.

Las películas de exorcismos tienen ciertas características que siempre he encontrado atractivas: como el cambio de voces, el hablar en otro idioma y esa parte donde el demonio, espíritu o ente sabe todos los secretos de los que los rodean y usan eso para jugar con sus mentes. En este película de terror más allá de eso, lo que está más presente son lo intensas que son las escenas, es algo común en estás películas con temas de exorcismos pero este filme en especial está acompañado de unos diálogos que si le sumas el nivel de intensidad tan elevado, da como resultado una obra maestra que me quitó el aliento. Además me sorprendió el nivel de actuación tan elevado de todo el elenco y el compromiso que se puede ver al representar esos papeles que son todo menos fáciles.

As expected Anthony Hopkins' performance was stellar, Father Lucas was my favorite character hands down. Lucas is an exorcist who has been practicing his craft for decades and is known to be one of the best (if not the best,) his personality is somewhat difficult but you can't ask much from a man who sees evil on a daily basis, yet he is a character that can be sensitive and quite empathetic. Anthony has that knack for playing quirky, overly charismatic and strong-willed characters. It was so impressive that regardless of whether you like this genre or not you're really missing out on something worth watching. I've always been fascinated by Hopkins' work but his performance here takes the gold, followed by his incredible performance in Hannibal film which I'll be reviewing soon.

Cómo era de esperarse la actuación de Anthony Hopkins fue estelar, el padre Lucas fue mi personaje favorito sin lugar a dudas. Lucas es un exorcista que lleva practicando su oficio desde hace décadas y es conocido por ser uno de los mejores (si no es que el mejor), su personalidad es algo difícil pero no se le puede pedir mucho a un hombre que ve el mal a diario, aun así es un personaje que puede llegar a ser sensible y bastante empático. Anthony tiene esa facilidad para interpretar personajes peculiares, con exceso de carisma y de carácter fuerte. Fue tan impresionante que sin importar si te gusta o no este género de verdad te estás perdiendo de algo que vale la pena mirar. Siempre me ha fascinado el trabajo de Hopkins pero su actuación aquí se lleva el oro, seguido de su increíble actuación en Hannibal, película de la que haré una reseña pronto.

The protagonist of this story Michael Kovak is a skeptical man, who regardless of the inexplicable things he observes, he simply seeks a way to give a scientific or logical explanation, no matter how absurd the situation he doesn't accept that evil energies exist, so along with Father Lucas a man who performs daily exorcisms has some pretty dynamic dialogues where Father Lucas says things like "The fact that you do not accept that the Devil exists that will not protect you from him." Michael, although it doesn't seem so at first, is a very stubborn and closed minded man who is not satisfied with witnessing things that cannot be explained to believe them, he is one of those people who have to experience it, one of those people who only believe when everything becomes personal and that is exactly what happens in this film.

El protagonista de esta historia Michael Kovak es un hombre escéptico que sin importar las cosas inexplicables que él observe simplemente busca la manera de darle una explicación científica o lógica. Por más absurda que sea la situación él no acepta que las energías malignas existen, así que junto con el padre Lucas, un hombre que diariamente hace exorcismos, tiene unos diálogos bastante dinámicos donde el padre Lucas dice cosas como "El hecho de que no aceptes que existe el Diablo, eso no te protegerá de él". Michael aunque no lo parece al principio, es un hombre bastante terco y de mente cerrada, que no le basta con presenciar cosas que no tiene explicación para creer en ellas, es de esas personas que tienen que experimentarlo, de esas personas que solo creen cuando todo se torna personal y es exactamente lo que sucede en este filme.

It lacks all logic that a man who doesn't believe in anything pretends to be a priest, but that idea didn't come out of nowhere and he didn't take that path randomly or just because, he was driven by something his mother used to say which was that Michael was touched by the hand of God, he loved his mother so much and lost her at a very young age, plus his father's unconscious made him help him prepare her corpse for the wake after she died, maybe once you watch the scene or if you already saw it, it is clear that the man didn't do it with malice, he was immersed in his own grief and pain to think about his son, and not only that for him to be surrounded by corpses was something normal so his point of view of things is different, it was not at all right what he did, but I can understand that for him what he did was not wrong.

Carece de toda lógica que un hombre que no cree en nada pretenda ser un sacerdote, pero esa idea no surgió de la nada y él no tomó ese camino al azar o solo porque sí, él fue impulsado por algo que solía decir su madre, ella solía decir que Michael estaba tocado por la mano de Dios. El amaba tanto a su madre y la perdió a una edad muy temprana, además de que el inconciente de su padre hizo que lo ayudara a preparar su cadáver para el velorio después de morir. Quizás una vez que mires la escena o si ya la vistes, es claro que el hombre no lo hizo con maldad, él estaba sumido en su propia pena y dolor como para pensar en su propio hijo, y no solo eso, para él estar rodeado de cadáveres era algo normal, por lo que su punto de vista de las cosas era diferente, no estuvo para nada bien lo que hizo, pero si puedo entender que para él lo que hizo no estuvo mal.

What I enjoyed most about this movie were the dialogues, it was the best thing about this story, of course everything I mentioned above was great but the script of this movie is the best thing of all. The exorcism scenes were very well done, the twists in this film were pretty good and even though I knew what direction the plot was going in I'm not going to say it was totally predictable, yes some things happened how I expected but even those things exceeded my expectations. I always wanted to see this film because I thought the idea of seeing Anthony Hopkins in this horror genre which as I mentioned before is my favorite.

Lo que más disfruté de esta película fueron los diálogos, fue lo mejor de esta historia, por supuesto que todo lo que mencioné anteriormente fue grandioso pero el guión de esta película es lo mejor de todo. Las escenas de exorcismos estuvieron muy bien logradas, los giros de este filme fueron bastante buenos y aunque supe en qué dirección se dirigía la trama no voy a decir que fue totalmente predecible, si pasaron algunas cosas que esperaba, pero incluso esas cosas superaron mis expectativas. Siempre quise ver esta película porque me parecía perfecta la idea de ver a Anthony Hopkins en este género de terror que como he mencionado antes es mi favorito.

Of course you should, whether you like the genre or not you should. The story is based on true events, the performances were incredible, the script is top notch, the story is really fascinating and from my point of view it wasn't more of the same. Many scenes will leave you speechless, it is definitely one of the best exorcism movies I've seen with some pretty surprising twists and a level of intensity beyond expectations. I invite you to watch it, you won't regret it, it will keep you on the edge of your seat at all times.

Por supuesto que sí, te guste el género o no deberías. La historia está basada en hechos reales, las actuaciones fueron increíbles, el guión es de primera, la historia es realmente fascinante y desde mi punto de vista no fue más de lo mismo. Muchas escenas te dejarán sin habla, es definitivamente un de las mejores películas de exorcismos que he visto con unos giros bastantes sorpresivos y un nivel de intensidad más allá de lo esperado. Te invito a verla, no te arrepentirás, te mantendrá en todo momento al filo del sillón.
