Here we are again, drawn to a movie with a star-studded cast; this time, we’re looking at a dystopian film featuring Glen Powell, Emilia Jones, Colman Domingo, Michael Cera, Josh Brolin, and others. They are all great actors, but will that be enough to make it a good film? It is worth noting that the movie is based on a novel by the legendary Stephen King—published over 40 years ago—which explores the dangers of allowing mass media (specifically television) to control the lives and narratives of a society. There is something fascinating about stories like this: whether intended or not, they can end up reflecting who we really are. In fact, when King wrote the book, he was depicting a United States in the year 2025; call him a prophet or a visionary, but he wasn't far off the mark.
Aquí estamos otra vez dejándonos llevar por películas con un gran elenco y es que en esta oportunidad veremos una distopía protagonizada por Glen Powell, Emilia Jones, Colman Domingo, Michael Cera, Josh Brolin, etc. Todos son grandes actores, será suficiente para que sea un buen film?. Hay que decir que está película es basada en una novela del gran Stephen King publicada hace más de 40 años en donde nos habla de los peligros que puede ocasionar dejar que los medios de comunicación, en este caso la televisión, controlen la vida y narrativa de una sociedad. Hay algo interesante en estas historias y es que quieran o no pueden llegar a ser un reflejo de lo que somos, de hecho King cuando la escribió hablaba de un Estados Unidos en el 2025; profeta o visionario pero tan lejos no estuvo.
As you know, the story is set in a dystopian version of the United States where television holds real power—surpassing even politicians and other authorities. This has created a society that is utterly corrupt and wretched, where people are forced to scrape by on mere scraps. Enter Ben Richards (Glen Powell), a working-class laborer desperate for money to care for his sick daughter. He has tried everything, but things always go wrong; his past hardships have left him with an explosive temper when dealing with authority figures, making it difficult for him to find work. Television is rife with exploitative game shows that prey on people's desperation, and among them is "The Running Man"—arguably the most dangerous and lethal of them all.
Como ya saben estamos en una sociedad distópica dentro de los Estados Unidos en donde la televisión es la que tiene el poder real, incluso por sobre los políticos y demás poderes. Esto lleva a que dicha sociedad es una totalmente corrompida, miserable y que vive de migajas. Acá aparece Ben Richards (Glen Powell), un obrero de las clases más bajas que está desesperado por la falta de dinero que no le permite atender a su hija enferma. Lo ha intentado todo pero siempre termina mal, sus malas experiencias lo han llevado a tener un temperamento explosivo frente a cualquier autoridad o figura de poder lo que le ha dificultado conseguir trabajo. En la televisión abundan programas de concursos abusivos que juegan con la necesidad de la gente y entre ellos está "The Running Man", quizás el más peligroso y letal de todos.
His desperation is such that he decides to sign up by speaking directly to Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), the show's producer. The rules are simple: he must stay alive for 30 days while evading a team of professional assassins and ordinary people who join the game as informants, sharing the contestants' locations to earn money. The incentive is that he earns extra bonuses for every day he survives and receives payment for every game operative he kills. To top it all off, the entire ordeal is broadcast live; the audience watches the spectacle and ultimately decides many of the events that unfold. It is clear that this is a pure action movie—standing still is not an option, because, like it or not, he will be found. The show's concept—even by today's standards—is barbaric, as the film (and, by extension, King's novel) serves as a direct critique of what society was predicted to become and what it has actually turned into. While it is obviously fiction, I believe it offers a very accurate portrayal of what people are capable of becoming in this day and age.
Es tal el desespero que decide inscribirse hablando directamente con Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), el productor de dicho programa. Las reglas son simples: tiene que durar 30 días vivo mientras escapa de un grupo de asesinos profesionales y de la propia gente que también entra en el juego a manera de chismosos compartiendo la ubicación de los concursantes para así ganar dinero. El incentivo es que por cada día que sobreviva gana bonos extra y por cada agente del juego que asesine también gana dinero. Y por si esto fuera poco todo esto es transmitido en vivo para que las personas vean el espectáculo ya que la final es la audiencia la que termina decidiendo muchas de las cosas que terminan pasando. Queda claro que esta película es acción pura, acá no sirve quedarse quieto porque quiera o no lo van a encontrar. El concepto del programa, incluso para nuestros días, es barbárico porque se entiende que el film y por tanto la novela de King es una critica directa a lo que se pensaba y terminó siendo la sociedad en el presente. Obviamente es ficción pero creo que es una representación muy acertada de lo que pueden llegar a ser las personas hoy por hoy.
Speaking expressly of the movie, it is one where the action is always present, the dynamic of the game/program is that you survive as best you can using any means. That makes everything entertaining to watch because there are chases, fights, explosions, shots and a struggle for power and against power, which is what encompasses the entire plot. In the end Richards wants to win so he can take the money for his family but also to dismantle and expose the true face and intentions of those who pull the strings of power. He ends up becoming the face and voice of a resistance movement created by the people themselves who do not agree with what is happening. Personally, I wasn't bored, everything is very dynamic, there is a lot of tension. I liked how they put together the ending, it's obvious but they didn't make it look so obvious, they gave it a twist to make it more interesting. It is neither bad nor good, it is what it is and what people surely imagine is going to happen.
Hablando expresamente de la película es una en donde la acción siempre está presente, la dinámica del juego/programa es que como puedas sobrevivas usando cualquier medio. Eso hace que todo sea entretenido de ver porque hay persecuciones, peleas, explosiones, disparos y una lucha de poder y contra el poder que es lo que engloba toda la trama. Al final Richards quiere ganar para poder llevarse el dinero para su familia pero también para desmontar y exponer la verdadera cara e intenciones de los que manejan los hilos del poder. Termina por convertirse en la cara y voz de un movimiento de resistencia que crea la propia gente que no está de acuerdo con lo que pasa. En lo personal no me aburrí, es muy dinámico todo, hay mucha tensión. Me gustó como hilaron el final, es obvio pero no lo hicieron ver tan obvio, le dieron una vuelta para hacerlo más interesante. No es malo ni bueno, es lo que es y lo seguramente la gente imagina que va a pasar.
To wrap things up, let's talk about the performances. Glen Powell is a solid actor who delivers; whatever role he’s cast in—whether action, drama, or comedy—he does a good job, though his work is very middle-of-the-road. I liked Colman Domingo as the show host; it’s a very realistic character—the kind of despicable person who never looks beyond the end of his own nose. I found Josh Brolin somewhat inconsequential, despite the importance of his role. Meanwhile, Cera and Emilia Jones played supporting roles that helped the protagonist grow. It’s a good film, though somewhat basic; the plot lacks interesting twists or much depth—what you see on screen is exactly what you get, with no need to read between the lines. It’s entertaining, sure, but not much more than that. It runs for over two hours—a downside, in my opinion, as it didn't need to be that long. Still, it’s perfectly fine for a bit of fun. Para ir cerrando hablar de las actuaciones. Glen Powell es un actor que cumple, el rol que le pongan lo va a hacer bien, sea acción, drama, comedia, es muy promedio en su trabajo. Me gustó de lo de Colman Domingo haciendo del presentador del programa. Es un personaje muy real en el sentido de que existe de verdad; es de esos despreciables que nunca miran más allá de sus narices. Josh Brolin me pareció poco relevante a pesar de la importancia de su papel. Y Cera y Emilia Jones fueron personajes secundarios pero que ayudaron a hacer crecer al protagonista. Es un film bueno, medio básico porque la trama no tiene plot twist interesantes ni mucha profundidad, su trama es todo lo que se muestra en pantalla, no hay que sobreentender las cosas. Entretiene si, pero no mucho más. Dura más de dos horas, un punto en contra eso, creo que no hacía falta hacerla tan larga. Para divertirse un rato está más que aceptable.
