  1. The Seventh Seal | Review & Analysis | (ENG) (ESP)@kruznik71791d

In the fourteenth century the Black Death struck all of medieval Europe manifesting a mystical terror among the European population that was annihilated by 25 percent. This plague led to a religious chaos and a daze among people who only knew a supposed religious outlet in the face of such discomfort, so much so that many of the remedies contained written parts of the Bible.

The film places us in this scenario but it really is an analogy to the existential malaise of the human being. This is a film that despite its short duration is dense, handling deep philosophical codes and emphasizing existentialism and directly sowing the doubt of the existence of God.

Antonious Block is a knight who crosses death and this, not having found any meaning in life, decides to entertain the scythe with a game of chess, mentioning that if he wins he will get rid of death itself, but this is just an excuse to get the time to clear up philosophical doubts that pertained to his life, his faith and the meaning of existence. Soon death decides to stop the game and give Antonious more time.

On his way, Antonious is with his squire who is an important character in the work since he represents the antithesis of the medieval common citizen, moving away from any metaphysical claim, being a pragmatic man and almost approaching the philosophy of Nietzsche. In many dialogues Squire Jons (the squire) mentions his blatant rejection of religion, positioning his life as the joy of life and of the will.

Later on we will get together with the rest of the cast as they are a couple of actors who roam the streets flaunting the free spirit of the artist but also the misinterpretations that they can have by conservative and irrational characters.

My favorite character is undoubtedly Jons, since despite his pragmatism he has his own moral code rejecting religion as an imposition and doing justice with his own hands. Sometimes Jons can be a bit vile person but at least he is someone authentic.

Block's desperation is more than understandable and I have put myself in his place not for religious reasons but because of a deep existential crisis in trying to make sense of a life without purpose. That is why it is important to have a conviction and a purpose that drives us and gives us enough energy to continue ahead, otherwise we will be lost forever.

While the film is based on medieval times and the cultural backwardness that this posed for 14th-century Europe, a perfect analogy can be drawn in modern times. It is almost a fact that director Bergman tried to reflect the concerns of modern times by making a fable about the Black Death. Agnosticism and doubt are the main philosophical axis of the work that is full of dialogues that show us the director's concerns.

Whenever I see a Bergman film I try to focus on every detail of the dialogue as it is dense and you have to read a lot between the lines and interpret what the director wanted to say. This is not a movie to spend on a Friday night but to reflect on our existence and identity as human beings. A film that attracts universal and worrying concepts, which little by little have been fading.

Apart from the philosophical side, it is also worth commenting on the historical aspect and the deep ignorance that plagued the European streets. The crisis of a plague in a town that had gone back in time plunging into a dangerous darkness that would kill millions of lives. I think that the main plague was not the black one but the ignorance that seduced millions of souls with archaic and fundamentalist ideas.

There are many scenes that are worth highlighting such as the scene of the chess game and its dialogues only at the beginning of the film but in general terms the film is gloomy, dark and with an exotic mix of harsh reality and masked fantasy.

This is another of the great recommendations that I can contribute to this community, a cult classic and a film with a strong philosophical charge that can leave us stunned after watching an hour and a half of the film. However, it is worth mentioning that all Bergman's films are like that and this is a review that does not merit the great work. Rather, this text seeks to express a largely opinion and appreciation of one of the best cinematographic works of all time.

  2. The seventh Seal Review - Why??@reviewzzz2470d

The seventh Seal, described as the darkest and most depressing film in the history of world cinema, may attract you, a movie that begins with the ghost of death and ends.

Well, that's not all. In the film, things really deserve to be seen and immersed in their meanings, let's give you, dear reader, some of them in this article.

    the story

Anthony and his friend Jones return from the Crusades, but their return coincides with the spread of the plague, which extends his hand throughout the country. So far, this is not what Antonius is facing. He is facing another dilemma. He is the king of death, who stands for him to look out for him face to face, asking him to leave with him.He is finished. About him, "Antonius" something unfortunately, and this is what concerns him constantly, "Antonius" is trying to negotiate with the king of death through the match in the game of chess, if winning the share of our young hero will be entitled to other opportunities to live and so, (as if in this small detail A hint from the filmmakers that life as a whole is only played.

In fact, Antonius does not ask for a postponement from the king of death for the sake of gluttony or plundering from the pleasures of life; Perplexed by a dream, he dreams of acquiring knowledge.

    Why?

The most important point the film highlights is: freedom to wonder

The film leaves much room for the freedom of legitimate inquiry by the heroes of the work and by the viewer as well, many positions make us stand in wonder to say why ?! Including the following:

    • While “Antonius” struggles with questions in his head without a sail, he goes to lead “confession” in the church “according to his religious belief”, he tries to ask, but without real answers that heal him. With the church servant.

He asks: - What are these frightening charges?

He answers: - It is a dance of death.

    • And why all those inscriptions?

    • People remember death!

    • That will never make them happy.

    Here we have “Why?”

Why do some people insist on hijacking your happiness, and playing on the delicacy of your senses by mentioning things like: death, torment, etc. to pass the philosophy of self-flagellation and torment of conscience? I think the probable answer is that they want to make another copy of them, it doesn't matter if you don't kill, steal, lie or spread strife. No, but you must be afraid trembling do not know for life any taste to find yourself thrown in their forts and castles, asking to enter in their security and safety.

    • A show of artistic performances performed by clowns in the city square is not complete because of the entry of cohorts of people into the scene in a frightening form. What happens is only a deserved punishment from the Lord, after which a clergyman calls for certain individuals and throws them tons of words that are but a piece of hell. It is the same disc of the idea of heavenly punishment that justifies all the disasters of the world.

    Why?

Why is my life passing on me, even in its last moments? Who gave you this divine mandate to judge me and judge my end unequivocally? Who authorized you to pronounce the rule of God in His slaves, and determine which of them in Naim and whom in Seir? You are entitled to spread their way with intimidation and intimidation while your role as a cleric is to carry the torches of light and hope in the human soul even in its last breath.

And many more questions that you will face, as you watch this strange movie fun.

Acting and directing team The Seventh Seal About the role of "Antonius" actor (Max von Sido)

On the role of comrade Jones, the actor (Gunnar Bjornstrand)

On the role of the actor King of Death (Bengt Akirot)

This is only part of the acting team, whose attitudes are highlighted in this article, and there are many others who have succeeded this work with their distinctive characters, and their different roles.

The Swedish film was produced in 1957, and directed and directed by the giant (Ingmar Bergman).

    Personal opinion

The significance of the film is evident in the journey of everyone to search for an answer, the film encourages exploration, research and asking questions, but it also strongly urges the faith, and this was evident in the words of "Antonius" in the latter parts of the film.

  3. The seventh seal (Movie): life, death and faith.@cristiancaicedo2748d

One of the best films of Ingmar Bergman

This film deals with several recurring themes in the director's work such as the meaning of life, death, friendship and love. But it mainly talks about God and faith, or the loss of it. Antonius Block is a knight who, together with his squire, has just returned from the crusades and finds his country plagued by the Black Death. The middle age as a historical period and european inquisition as a scenario, constitute the perfect frame for a film whose main argument is the crisis of faith that the knight is going through. After ten years of fighting in the Crusades, Block doesn't return with his faith reinforced. On the contrary, doubts torment him. Is it possible that God doesn't exist? It is not, in the case of the gentleman, a crisis of faith like the kind a person can go through today; remember that he is a knight who has just fought in the crusades defending a God he does not believe in anymore. Not only he's lost his faith, but his whole life has lacked of meaning because he has fought for an empty cause. If God doesn't exist, his life has had no purpose.

Full of doubts, his time comes and upon his return to Europe he meets Death. Block then proposes to play a game of chess, claiming to be a better player than Death; Block says he knows Death likes to play chess because he has seen it in the paintings and heard it in the songs. As long as the game is maintained, Antonius will have time to do something meaningful with his life; but if he loses he must go with the dark messenger. Meanwhile, stimulating dialogues are established between the knight and Death on the great questions of life: death and the existence of God. They are undoubtedly the best sequences of the tape and is evident in phrases like:

Why the cruel impossibility of reaching God with the senses?

Why can't I kill God inside me?

I want to understand. I don't want to believe

All of them come from a man who can no longer believe in miracles he can't see, or in those that can't be demonstrated. Simply, he can't continue trusting in a God who is silent before his doubts. He's a man who needs to know, because he doesn't support the idea that now, when his last hour has arrived, he must go to the nothingness. What lies beyond death? Even Death doesn't answer that question. If, when we die, the emptiness awaits us, what is the meaning of having lived trusting in the promise that there would be something more afterwards?

Besides the clear reference in the title of the film to the book of Revelations, other signs are presented that reveal the end of time, a belief of the Middle Ages: they see four suns; the vision of the Virgin Mary next to the child; a woman has given birth to a veal head; they burn a witch at the stake for bringing the plague; and of course, the presence of Death as a character, playing a game of chess against a man, as a symbol of the inevitability of the end: death always wins.

Deep and poetic moments abound in the images as well as in the script, even more than in other of Bergman's movies. The allegories and symbols are so many that it would be necessary to write other posts to analyze them all. If the face of Antonius Block is familiar, it's because Max von Sydow is one of the Swedish actors with the biggest filmography, both in Sweden and in the United States. He may not be immediately remembered as one of the lesser characters of Wild Strawberries, also by Bergman, but he will no doubt be remembered as Oskr's grandfather in Extremely Loud, Incredible Close, as the remembered Father Merrin in The exorcist, or more recently as The Three-eyed Raven in the acclaimed series Game of Thrones. Bibi Anderson and Gunnar Björnstrand collaborate again with Bergman in this film.

Gunnar Fischer is again in charge of photography in this film which earned Bergman the Cinematographic Writers Circle Medals for Best Foreign Film and Best Foreign Director in 1961, in addition to other awards and nominations. Because of the performance of the protagonist, the poetic content of the script and the shots, the profound treatment of topics that are always valid and the way in which the debate between knowledge and faith, emptiness and meaning is presented, I give it 8.5/10 points to this movie that I liked a little more than the others I've seen of Bergman and I recognize, without a doubt, that it's one of those movies that everyone should see.

Yo quiero entender. No quiero creer.

  5. The seventh seal: Summary and analysis@stairway2heaven2931d
Personally I do not consider myself a cinephile or an expert in the area, I do not see many movies and those I saw and see are those who can attribute something to me, only if they meet the standards and characteristics of which they can draw my attention. However, with this was a curious case, I was recommended by a friend last week, seeing his title does not really call my attention, but courtesy and for the several years of friendship as well as his good taste both in the cinema and in the reading I gave him an opportunity, as you will know and if it is not so I stress any spiritual or transcendent aspect of mere existence is something that has caught my attention and in this case the subject is directed to death.

Death is one of those essential archetypes that dialogues, interrogates, frightens and with complete security is always there, that doubt has always been generated. What else is there after death? The poet Dante in his work "The Divine Comedy" gives us a complete structure of both infernal and heavenly worlds in which men represent a fundamental factor beyond the earthly plane in which dreams and desires are fully and safely fulfilled and it is punished without remedies or excuses. In the divine comedy death is only the transition or passage to this type of experience, however in the seventh ring death is the protagonist. You will see the plot is developed in medieval Sweden at the time of the Crusades where the story of Antonius Block is told, a Swedish knight who, together with his squire, returns from one of the crusades to his village, finding him under the plague. Death is sovereign and arrogant but the knight challenges her to a game of chess to which he accepts laughing.

The scenes of this game are serene and transcendental although due to several abrupt moments of the series, the game is interrupted and the story of the knight moves to other planes while entering his town, but death is still present doing its function there until to meet him again and continue his dispute.

It really makes me think of life as if it were a game, a game that we will eventually lose and that is a fact, but it is up to us to find the means and alternatives to win time to death, to gain days in our life, to seek meaning and response to our concerns, to complete our dreams and hopes, to spend time with those we love and to excel in this earthly plane, as well as face the fear of disease, evil, hunger and other misfortunes that afflict our lifetime. In order to calm our existential and transcendental concerns we go to comedy to laughter and those values and tastes that comfort us and in some way mark us to move forward while we are in a parallel game of chess against death that also gives us deep answers but it is up to us to capture them or not.

In the story, while our knight goes deeper, two street actors called Joe and Mia repeatedly bring joy and laughter to the people, calming them from their rigors as well as their worries and distracting them from the unfortunate landscape in which the burning of women condemned for witchcraft, rapes against women, religious believers lashing out in order to appease the divine punishment imposed by God and vandals taking advantage of the weak and helpless. Antonius in his position is very little he can do and to offer before these evils while the death is dancing next to his scythe and sand relog in the end the death wins and proceeds to take all the souls that I release to a hill while the artists street and Mia one of these artists looks with horror at that march of the condemned which we will all be part of it leaving a deep and allegorical message of this moment inevitable but at the same time liberating.

The film is of Swedish origin of 1957 directed by Ingmar Bergman set in medieval Europe by the Black Death, in its original language it is titled "Det sjunde inseglet"
