The Silent Twins || Disturbingly So...@jhymi359d
I’m not sure I’ve seen any disturbing film in the last couple of months but I got the chance to see one last week. I’m not sure the best words to describe this film because it is based on a true life story, and after reading about the lives of the Gibbon twins, this a story that will leave any and every one engrossed. Maybe not just in the best ways.
The Silent Twins (2022)
Like I said, I’m not sure how best to describe this film. But the movie begins with a very disturbing animation and two girls who I presume are the twins that use mostly their teeth to talk. They are pretending to be radio presenters and telling a lively story. The moment their Mom knocks on the door, they retreat into silence, and this more or less is everything this film is about.
They are incredibly talented when it comes to writing. Crafting the most vivid images with their words that are not exactly conventional but they are unique and true to them. When their works kept getting rejected by different publishing houses, they attribute this to a lack of inspiration because they don’t go out more, and don’t have a romantic life.
And so, they do. They set their sights on an American teenager who indoctrinates them into a world of alcohol, cigarettes and sex. On a note of inspiration from this teenager they idolize, they vandalize an establishment and are charged with arson and theft. They don’t get the help they need and are detained in a psychiatric hospital. They have two choices there. Stay together and die. Or separate and be free.
Because I know there are a lot of people who actively hated and were disgusted by the film, I’ll give my two cents. I found a few things contradicting. In the original story, the twins were painted as difficult people but moreso those around them like their families who were unwelcoming and their teachers who refused to give them the help they needed.
But in the movie, this was not the case. The entirety of the movie, in fact, was about how everyone around them kept rallying around and trying to get them the help they needed. Also, the ending where it seemed like nearly two decades or more had passed but everyone looked the same including their parents, that was kind of a loophole for me as well.
But to those saying that this movie is trash because you found it disturbing or the way the girls talked, disturbing. Or the animations, disturbing. That’s literally the whole point. This movie is not meant to be entertaining. It’s meant to be engrossing and reflective of two girls who were wronged by the system.
The Brontë girls talked to themselves and were definitely weird but they weren’t institutionalised, but these black girls, (because let’s face it, the reason why they weren’t given ample fair hearing and just left in that hospital to rot has a lot to do with their race), were abandoned.
I found too many things in the film disturbing and I’m guessing that this was the image that was supposed to be passed by the directors. The animation creeped me out, the way the sisters talked as well. Almost everything. But they had issues that were never really talked about or resolved. I, for one, would have liked to know what really pushed them to be silent. And I never got to really understand that.
But, it is what it is really. A disturbing watch, and you’re not sure what you learnt but I guess it doesn’t feel like much of a waste when you realize that it was based on a true story. I certainly wouldn’t have had glowing comments if this was someone’s nearly morbid imagination. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone. Watch this film, or not.
I didn't know there was a movie about this case of the twins, I was surprised and at the same time excited because years ago I had read this story and saw a couple of photos and tried to imagine everything in my head.
June & Jennifer Gibbons were known as the silent twins because at an early age they stopped communicating with other people and only communicated with each other. The story is somewhat murky because the fact that they did not talk to other people is due to an agreement that the twins had.
The movie is pretty faithful to what I had read about the twins, and by the way people, yes, this is something from real life.
The story takes us to the twins beginning their school days, here they had already moved to another country and unfortunately in their school they were the only black ones and this caused them to suffer bullying, at this stage was when the twins no longer spoke to anyone, even when they were bullied, they did not make a sound, the principal spoke to their parents and, excusing for their lack of speech, expelled them from school, although it is believed that this also saved them from further bullying.
As the twins grew up, they spent their time alone in the room. However, they developed great writing skills, but being in full development, they also wanted to experience many more things, which ended up being drugs, alcohol, and vandalism.
The latter was the reason why they ended up in a high-security psychiatric hospital in England, remaining there for 11 years of their lives. Unfortunately, the day they manage to leave, Jennifer dies but the murky thing is that it seems that everything was planned in their pact, since it indicates that one of the two had to die.
The story is deeper and with many more details than what I am telling you here, but it would be very extensive to explain everything. But if you are more interested, you can investigate or also watch the movie on HBOMAX.
›The Silent Twins | I wish I wouldn't have to talk@jauregui981166d
Actually, I've forgotten when I saw this movie, but since I had the brilliant idea of putting it on the list of movies I want to write about, I'm doing this right now. It's been a while since I've seen a movie like this, or at least one that made me feel a particular way that I've never identified with certainty before. This is a very slow movie, and as the title may indicate, it is very silent, but not really, because we will almost always be listening to the internal dialogue of the twins, the secret conversations they have, then we will have many unmissable conversations, which I particularly loved.
This movie is based on real events, in the life of June and Jennifer Gibbons, identical twins who grew up in Wales, who are known as 'The Silent Twins', because they both refused to talk to anyone other than themselves, that is, they only talked to each other and no one else. In this movie they do go to talk to other people, I don't know if in real life they did that while the events portrayed on screen were taking place, but if they didn't, I understand why they did it that way in this movie, as it was much easier to make the story flow more smoothly with them talking when they should, or when they wanted to achieve something.
A month after starting this review is that I'm finally going to try to finish it. The beginning of the movie is one of my favorite things, there are the two of them playing that they are on a radio station and they are talking about anything, until they start talking about real or cruel facts of life, something like that was, and the one that day was how to deal with divorce, then they start talking about how men suffer a lot, because they think women are superior and hate them for that, but they can't live without them, how love can become destruction, and that even loving someone you can a la see want to watch them die. Hearing such dark and gloomy things from the voice of two sweet little girls was very disturbing, but it's something that is becoming more and more normalized, and I wish it wasn't so.
Another one of my favorite things is that it has stop motion scenes, and that was a marvel; normally these stop motion scenes are going to be the representation of the twins' internal dialogues, but as they get older they will change, they will become more and more descriptive, and they will stop being stop motion to be real and/or objective scenes of what we are hearing. To this we have to add that both are going to become writers, so many times in the middle of nowhere we will have a scene full of fiction that will blow our minds and it will be great, I really liked that they showed those little parts of their writings, they were very well done.
Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance did an incredible job, showing that connection had not to be easy, because they were not only twin sisters, but they promised that they would only talk to each other and no one else in the world, always together, everything together, forming a codependent relationship where being away from each other was synonymous with torture and suffering that did not even allow them to eat, that codependence, that obsession they had for each other was very palpable, there was no look that did not show the love and obsession they had for each other, the jealousy for what one achieved and the other did not, for what one got to have and the other wished to have or that did not exist at all, the almost imperceptible intensity of every interaction they had with each other was horrible to bear. I loved it.
One thing that really resonated with me was the fact that they at 6 years old, I think, was that they decided to stop talking, and just to imagine that I wouldn't have to talk or communicate with anyone unless I wanted to, sometimes I wish I didn't have to talk, didn't have to put up with being talked to with the expectation that I have to respond just because I can talk, and it's not that things are right with me, not at all, everything is wrong with me, that's why I don't want to talk, I don't want to communicate in almost any way with anyone, I can be happy knowing about the existence of people and how their lives develop, but don't ask me to say anything, talking tires me, talking tires me, just writing is the closest thing to calm I have, and that doesn't mean I want to write to communicate or give explanations.
Me encantó.
This is not a movie for everyone, because if you don't like slow movies, with many silent scenes, where there are no men in sight, and when they come out they are only used, plus it is an unconventional drama, you won't like it, I loved it, that's why after almost two months of having seen it I can remember enough to write this and still feel and think again what I experienced when I saw it. Go see it, you won't like it, I love it.
