Hello again, Hive friends, @suisver here with a new post for the channel. This time, I'm continuing my review of one of the series I've been watching for a while. I had the chance to watch episode 11 of The Summer Hikaru Died and it's quite interesting; we're almost at the end of the season. This episode 11 was spectacular, full of ancient mysteries and pure psychological horror.

The episode begins when Hikaru arrives at Yoshiki's door, almost sleepy, rambling, as if he weren't himself. Yoshiki extends his arm toward him, but after thinking it over, he withdraws. Since it all happens in complete darkness, Yoshiki only manages to see the disturbing reflection in his eyes... and honestly, I think Hikaru was already completely transformed into a monster at that moment.
We jump back in time. We see a beautiful and nostalgic scene: Yoshiki's father wanted to read him a story, but little Yoshiki was too engrossed in playing with his toys. The curious thing is that, even as a child, he was already thinking about peace and a "peace treaty" between monsters and humans. I think it was a moment of premonition for young Yoshiki.
Back in the present, Yoshiki knocks on the door of his father's office to demand answers. He needs to know the truth about Hikaru's family.
This is where we begin to understand part of this mystery. Yoshiki's father recounts a conversation with Hikaru's father (whose death devastated him) and tells us a terrifying legend:
An ancestor of the Indo family climbed the mountain and asked for his wife to return from the dead. The price? The village paid with countless deaths and lost heads, while the Indo family suffered no ill effects.
The Indo men carry this sin on their shoulders. That's why they go to the mountains to pay tribute: so the monster won't harm them. What was lost at the temple was, in fact, that woman's head.
In the midst of all this, Yoshiki's father utters a phrase that struck me as incredibly profound: "People seek what they lack." That phrase left me pondering for quite some time; the dialogue between the two of them at that moment was brilliant.
Meanwhile, Hikaru learns that many lives were sacrificed for him, for the monster he is, and he feels terribly wrong. The number of "impurities" in the village has decreased, leaving a huge mystery hanging in the air. But Yoshiki isn't going to let Hikaru return to the mountain; he wants to stop him at all costs, and he finds a new key clue: an image called the Sketch of Hell, which bears a striking resemblance to the deity inhabiting his friend. However, that discovery remains unresolved.
In the next scene, Hikaru is very weak. Yoshiki, in a desperate attempt to help him, wants to return a part of himself, but Hikaru refuses. Instead, they begin to talk about what the original Hikaru was like, because the memory-devouring monster wants to know.
Yoshiki speaks very highly of his friend, about his crushes on girls, and how they... always end up getting boyfriends. Hahaha, this part made me laugh so much because I personally identified with it. The same thing has happened to me: whenever I start liking a girl, BAM!, she suddenly gets a boyfriend. 🤣
But the comedy doesn't last long. Suddenly, Hikaru begins to transform. Yoshiki runs, and despair paralyzes him. Hikaru turns into a real monster; his neck leaks out and tries to absorb him. Yoshiki feels fear, but strangely, something calms him: he discovers that the sensation of being absorbed isn't uncomfortable. It's quite unsettling.
When he comes to, Hikaru thinks he meant to hurt him, but Yoshiki reassures him that everything is alright. Hikaru runs away. Deep down, Yoshiki knows he accepts him because he's so much like his friend, but inside, he wishes he could find him a place where he can be at peace with his monstrous nature. The worst part is that Asako witnessed this entire disturbing scene and ran away.
Desperate and out of control, Hikaru seeks help from the fortune teller. She tries to comfort him, warning him that if he continues to associate with Yoshiki, he will only attract evil, because Hikaru still doesn't understand human life and finds it incredibly difficult to control himself.
With tears in his eyes, Hikaru asks if everything would be fixed by returning to the mountain, as that would rid him of his impurities. He cries with a broken heart because, even though he knows he is a monster, he doesn't want to be alone. It is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the series. Perhaps the woman could help him, but she doesn't seem to dare... So Hikaru has no choice but to return home alone, and there he remains, consumed by sadness.
I give this chapter 100 out of 100 because it was so moving.

El capítulo comienza cuando Hikaru llega a la puerta de Yoshiki, casi somnoliento, divagando, como si no fuera él. Yoshiki extiende el brazo hacia él pero, tras pensarlo bien, se retira. Como todo ocurre en plena oscuridad, Yoshiki solo logra ver el perturbador reflejo de sus ojos... y honestamente, yo creo que Hikaru ya estaba completamente transformado en un monstruo en ese instante.
Damos un salto al pasado. Vemos una escena preciosa y nostálgica: el papá de Yoshiki quería leerle un cuento, pero un pequeño Yoshiki estaba demasiado entretenido jugando con sus juguetes. Lo curioso es que, desde niño, ya estaba pensando en la paz y en un "tratado de paz" entre los monstruos y los humanos. Creo que fue un momento de premonición para el niño Yoshiki.
De vuelta al presente, Yoshiki toca la puerta de la oficina donde trabaja su papá para pedirle respuestas. Necesita saber la verdad sobre la familia de Hikaru.
Aquí es donde empezamos a comprender parte de este misterio. El papá de Yoshiki revive una conversación con el padre de Hikaru (cuya muerte lo dejó destrozado) y nos suelta una leyenda aterradora:

Mientras tanto, Hikaru se entera de que sacrificaron muchas vidas por él, por el monstruo que es, y se siente terriblemente mal. Yoshiki le habla muy bonito de su amigo, de sus ilusiones con las chicas y de cómo ellas... ¡siempre terminaban consiguiendo novio. Jajaja, esta parte me causó mucha risa porque me sentí pesonalmente identificado. A mí me ha pasado igual: siempre que me empieza a gustar una chica, ¡ZAAAS!, de la nada le aparece novio. 🤣
Pero la comedia dura poco. De repente, Hikaru empieza a transformarse. Yoshiki corre y la desesperación lo paraliza. Hikaru se convierte en un monstruo auténtico; el cuello se le filtra y quiere absorberlo. Yoshiki siente miedo, pero extrañamente algo lo calma: descubre que esa sensación de ser absorbido no le es incómoda. Algo muy loco.
Al volver en sí, Hikaru cree que quiso hacerle daño, pero Yoshiki lo tranquiliza diciendo que todo está bien. Hikaru huye corriendo. En el fondo, Yoshiki sabe que lo acepta porque se parece demasiado a su amigo, pero dentro de sí, desearía encontrarle un lugar donde pueda estar en paz con su condición de monstruo. Lo peor es que Asako vio toda esta perturbadora escena y salió huyendo.
Desesperado y sin control, Hikaru busca ayuda con la señora vidente. Ella intenta consolarlo, advirtiéndole que si se sigue mezclando con Yoshiki solo va a atraer el mal, porque Hikaru aún no comprende la vida humana y le cuesta horrores controlarse.
Con lágrimas en los ojos, Hikaru pregunta si todo se arreglaría regresando a la montaña, pues así se acabarían las impurezas. Llora con el corazón roto porque, aunque sabe que es un monstruo, ¡o quiere estar solo. Es una de las escenas más dolorosas de la serie. Quizás la señora podría ayudarlo, pero parece que no se atreve... Así que Hikaru no tiene más opción que regresar solo a su casa, y allí se queda, sumido en la tristeza.
Le doy 100 de 100 a este capítulo porque fue muy emocionante.

The story follows two boys, Hikaru and his friend Yoshiki. They've been best friends since like forever, the kind that know each other's habits, expressions and all that. Their friendship was natural, deep, and it sort of reminded me of how simple childhood bonds can be until life - or in this case, death - changes everything.

One summer, Hikaru dies. But what is more unsettling than his death is that something, something that is not human, takes over Hikaru's body. Yoshiki comes to realise this quickly, but even knowing the truth, he could not bring himself to let go of the thing that was just wearing Hikaru's face. The thing that replaced Hikaru tries to act like him but yeah, some people around him were able to notice that he wasn't the real Hikaru. Some things were off, like the way he looks at people and the emotions that doesn't quite fit.

I really liked Hikaru and Yoshiki's friendship. While there wasn't drama in their friendship, it was real. I felt Yoshiki's pain in every almost episodes, and I could see how much he sought the real Hikaru, even as he was trying to hold on to what was left. I thought it would be a BL story at first but it wasn't. It was simply a profound emotional bond and I liked that it remained like this. The entire series had this peaceful but eerie vibe, the kind that made me think like something's wrong meanwhile everything else looks peaceful.

Rating ***The Summer Hikaru Died***, I would give it an 8 out of 10. The characters, emotions, and pacing worked so well together.
The Summer Hikaru Died isn't just sad, it's the kind of sad that feels human and it was a beautiful story.
