The Vision of Escaflowne

Part about the event for TAR - I wasn't able to find another anime with romantic themes that was for adults. I also didn't want to create another text about Nana or other anime that I have already written about several times.

Today I will take you to the world of Vision of Escaflowne. Some say that it is the progenitor of the Isekai genre, but this is not true. Let me start by saying that it cannot be called the progenitor, because Isekai is one of the oldest species known to human cultures, regardless of their location on the planet. A work that can boast such a title is Paul no Miracle Daisakusen. It had 50 episodes, it started being released at the turn of 1976 and 1977. The item I'm going to tell you about today comes from 1996 and has half as many episodes. It was originally supposed to be 13 episodes longer, but due to budget constraints, they had to shorten it to 26 episodes. The Sunrise studio is responsible for the production, so it is at least good in terms of animation, special effects and large robots.

I don't know what it's actually like, because although I've been watching anime with large machines since I was a child, I have too little comparison base. It seems to me that compared to titles released at a similar time or later, VoE looks really good. We feel the weight of the robots and partial inertia while fighting or moving. The design is also really cool, the machines resemble large walkers clad in full armor. Watching them in battle gives a lot of fun and satisfaction. Especially in combination with the epic choirs that were recorded in Poland in cooperation with the Warsaw National Philharmonic. In the photo below we see Yoko Kanno creating some songs with Polish musicians.

Okay, I already wrote about it being Isekai, I praised the cool robots, maybe something about romance? It's no accident that I mentioned the triangle in the title. The main character who went to another world known as Gaea. She got there together with Van Fanel, who had appeared in Hitomi's city a little earlier hunting for the Dragon. Giant flying... oh no, dragons here don't have wings xD So it's different. The hearts of walking reptiles provide a power source for large robots. What's more, it turns out that Van is the heir to the throne of the Faneli kingdom. After they defeat the Dragon together, they travel to the prince's home world.

Ok, but where did this threesome come from? Hitomi falls in love with two men, i.e. the above-mentioned prince and Allen Schezar, who is a handsome knight and reminds the protagonist of her boyfriend who stayed on Earth. Van isn't ugly, but he's nowhere near Allen. He is weaker both as a knight and as a Guymelef pilot (that's what robots are called in the VoE world). He is also short-tempered and cannot control his emotions. But he has another, very important feature - he is a future king. As I mentioned in many examples, for example when recently discussing Rainbow (or in another context, reviewing Martin Scorsese's latest film - Killers of the Flower Moon), love is a beautiful feeling, but women like money and security. Money is synonymous with security, but not only that. They also provide a comfortable life. Allen may be stronger, but as the old saying goes - nec Hercules contra plures. He won't win by fighting an entire army. Hitomi hits on first one and then the other and can't decide. The guys who compete for her favor don't make it any easier for her either. An additional factor is Merle - an orphan saved by Van. It's true that the girl has no chance of becoming a queen due to her racial difference (although... maybe Fanelia is tolerant in this matter?), but she adds her two cents to this love vortex.

I wouldn't put this title next to Nana or City Hunter in terms of depicting romance and the emotions associated with it, but I also can't compare it to anime that approach it in a minimalist way. If I had to rate the quality of the love themes, I would put them at level 7. As for the other aspects of the anime, it is one of the best anime of his that I have seen. I even like the ones that... To put it mildly, didn't work out for him. Yes Earth Girl Arjuna, I'm looking at you. He's not my favorite creator, I just like him. I know anime series and films that were created or co-created by VoE director Kazuki Akane. Unfortunately, apart from VoE, I didn't like any of the titles he oversaw. Heat Guy J was ok, but not much else. Either way, I can recommend Escaflowne to both sexes. There is cool action, interesting relationships between the characters, intriguing characters, and great music co-created by Poles.

Część dotycząca eventu dla TAR - Nie byłem w stanie znaleźć innego anime z wątkami romantycznymi, które byłoby dla dorosłych. Nie chciałem też tworzyć kolejnego tekstu o Nanie lub innych anime, o których już kilka razy pisałem.

Dzisiaj zabiorę Was do świata Vision of Escaflowne. Niektórzy mówią, że jest to protoplasta z gatunku Isekai, ale to nie prawda. Zacznę od tego, że nie da się go nazwać protoplastą, bo Isekai to jeden z najstarszych gatunków znanych ludzkim kulturom, niezależnie od ich umiejscowienia na planecie. Dzieło które może się poszczycić takim tytułem, to Paul no Miracle Daisakusen. Miało 50 odcinków, zaczęło wychodzić na przełomie 1976 i 1977. Pozycja o której dzisiaj Wam powiem, pochodzi z 1996 roku i ma o połowę mniej odcinków. Pierwotnie miało być dłuższe o 13 odcinków, ale z uwagi na ograniczenia budżetowe, musieli je skrócić do 26 epizodów. Za produkcję odpowiada studio Sunrise, czyli jest co najmniej dobrze pod względem animacji, efektów specjalnych i wielkich robotów.

Nie wiem, jak jest faktycznie, bo choć od dziecka oglądam anime z dużymi maszynami, to mam zbyt małą bazę porównawczą. Wydaje mi się, że na tle tytułów, które wyszły w podobnym czasie lub później, VoE prezentuje się naprawdę dobrze. Czujemy ciężar robotów oraz częściową bezwładność w trakcie walki lub przemieszczania się. Design też jest naprawdę fajny, maszyny przypominają dużych piechurów odzianych w pełną zbroję. Oglądanie ich w walce daje naprawdę dużo frajdy i satysfakcji. Zwłaszcza w połączeniu z epickimi chórami, które były nagrywane w Polsce przy współpracy z Warszawską Filharmonią Narodową. Na zdjęciu poniżej widzimy Yoko Kanno tworzącą niektóre utwory z Polskimi muzykami.

Dobra, napisałem już o tym, że to Isekai, pochwaliłem fajne roboty, to może coś o romansie? Nieprzypadkowo wspomniałem o trójkącie w tytule. Główna bohaterka, która trafiła do innego świata znanego jako Gaea. Trafiła tam razem z Vanem Fanelem, który nieco wcześniej pojawił się w mieście Hitomi polując na Smoka. Olbrzymie latające... a nie, tutaj smoki nie mają skrzydeł xD Zatem inaczej. Serca kroczących gadów stanowią źródło zasilania dla wielkich robotów. Co więcej, okazuje się że Van jest dziedzicem tronu królestwa Faneli. Po tym jak razem pokonują Smoka, przenoszą się do ojczystego świata księcia.

Ok, ale skąd ten trójkąt? Hitomi zakochuje się w dwóch mężczyznach, czyli w/w księciu oraz Allenie Schezar, który jest przystojnym rycerzem i przypomina protagonistce o jej chłopaku, który został na Ziemi. Van nie jest brzydki, ale daleko mu do Allena. Jest słabszy zarówno jako rycerz, jak i pilot Guymelefa (tak się nazywają roboty w świecie VoE). Jest też porywczy i nie umie zapanować nad emocjami. Ale ma inną, bardzo ważną cechę - jest przyszłym królem. Jak wspominałem na wielu przykładach, choćby przy ostatnim omówieniu Rainbow (lub w innym kontekście, recenzując najnowszy film Martina Scorsese - Killers of the Flower Moon), miłość to piękne uczucie, ale kobiety lubią pieniądze i bezpieczeństwo. Pieniądze są synonimem bezpieczeństwa, ale nie tylko. Zapewniają również wygodne życie. Allen może i jest silniejszy, ale jak głosi stare powiedzenie - nec Hercules contra plures. Nie wygra walcząc z całą armią. Hitomi podrywa najpierw jednego, a potem drugiego i nie może się zdecydować. Chłopaki które rywalizują o jej względy również jej tego nie ułatwiają. Dodatkowym czynnikiem jest Merle - sierota, którą uratował Van. Co prawda dziewczyna nie ma szans na zostanie królową z uwagi na swoją odmienność rasową (chociaż... może Fanelia jest tolerancyjna w tej kwestii?), ale wprowadza swoje 3 grosze do tego miłosnego wiru.

Nie postawiłbym tego tytułu obok Nany lub City Huntera w kwestii przedstawienia romansu oraz wiążących się z nim emocji, ale nie mogę go też zestawić z anime, które podchodzą do tego w sposób minimalistyczny. Gdybym miał oszacować jakość wątków miłosnych, to umieściłbym je na poziomie 7. Jeśli chodzi o pozostałe aspekty anime, to jest to jedno z najlepszych anime jego autorstwa, jakie widziałem. Lubię nawet te, które... Delikatniej mówiąc, nie wyszły mu. Tak Earth Girl Arjuna, patrzę właśnie na ciebie. Nie jest to mój ulubiony twórca, po prostu go lubię. Znam seriale i filmy anime, które stworzył lub współtworzył reżyser VoE, Kazuki Akane. Niestety pomijając VoE, żaden tytuł, nad którym sprawował większą pieczę, nie przypadł mi do gustu. Heat Guy J był ok, ale niewiele poza tym. Tak czy siak, mogę polecić Escaflowne obu płciom. Jest tu fajna akcja, ciekawe relacje między bohaterami, intrygujące postacie, no i świetna muzyka, którą współtworzyli Polacy.
