Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun popular known as AY has always being a fan of making movies and each time he does, you'll be rest assured that it's going to be nothing short of comical, funny and entertaining, and so when I saw that he had another movie out on Netflix, i immediately knewn I'm in for another opportunity to entertain myself with laughter. What I didn't expect though was that the waiter is a movie that isn't just all about comedy, but one that blends it alongside suspense, actions and some commentary type of movie. Although I did get entertained like I anticipated, but then there are some aspects of it that made me have missed feelings.
The movie storyline line itself revolves around Ayo Makun, who plays the role of Akpos, the main character in the waiter. Akpos happens to be a young man who's struggling financially and got an opportunity to work as a waiter at an important government function. Unfortunately for him and almost everyone at the event though, what would have been an ordinary day surprisingly becomes a nightmare when armed robbers invaded the hotel where the event was held and held all the guest hostage. And that's how Akpos who was supposed to be an ordinary waiter, find himself in a situation that requires more than just serving food and drinks to guests.
One of the things I enjoyed and appreciate about the waiter is how they actually build the storyline around the issues plague with Nigeria and Nigerians for years, that's talking about issues like poverty, political irresponsibility, corruption and the people's constant frustration with the people that has been entrusted with the nations public resources. Why I actually liked this is because of how it actually touches the society reality of struggling endlessly, while those in power turn blinds eyes to the people's situation.
The movie also finds a way to introduce lots of big names in the movie Nollywood movie industry, without the movie losing it essence due to too many starts, I'm talking of start like Regina Daniels, Shaffy Bello, Determine Okanlawon among many others to name but few. And one thing we all already expect from all AY movie was still introduced into the waiter and that's how AY usual warri people's personality, even though I don't find every attempt at showcasing this funny, still it's what it's.
My reservation about the movie comes in how the actions were being executed by most of the cast, yes there's no doubt that the storyline was topnotch, but I feel like some action were being played so lightly that it's definitely not convincing, even some development were just to swift which left me questioning their logic, yes I know they're aspecting the the viewers to assume some time as past, but then I believe they can do better. The last thing I'm unimpressed about is how the movie were just to lazy to explore different characters they've introduced, I mean what's the point of introducing a character to us and after a scene or two, that's the end of them.
Although they did struggle to balance the comedy and action well, and this made me frustrated at times, I mean since you pick such a theme, you should be able to leave upto it, especially when it comes to the action part. However, overall it was a good watch and an entertaining one at that, because I like the idea behind the story, but way more than how it was executed, it would have been one of the top Nigerian action comedy movie had it explore some opportunities that the movie could have tapped from.
