💡 What everyone overlooked
Winner of the 2026 Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film (in a historic tie with The Singers), Deux personnes échangeant de la salive (also known as Two People Exchanging Saliva) is much more than a festival curiosity.
This 36-minute French-American film, written and directed by art historian Natalie Musteata and visual artist Alexandre Singh, is born from the disturbing sensation that our reality is already limping toward absurdity and authoritarianism.
Far from building a futuristic prophecy, the filmmakers seek to make us feel strange before the everyday. Inspired by police violence and the obscene contrast between news of suffering and advertising luxury, the plot places the viewer in a dystopian Paris.
However, to anchor their satire, the duo resorted to the imposing real architecture of the Galeries Lafayette department stores.
This choice defines the visual brilliance of the work. Shot in black and white by cinematographer Alexandra de Saint Blanquat (who cites Bertolucci's The Conformist as an aesthetic guide), the film plays with the contrast between a rigid camera in commercial spaces and a free gaze on the margins.
The care extends to the costumes, where Rezvan Farsijani allows monochrome prints and silhouettes to dialogue directly with art history; while the atmosphere evokes Magritte's The Lovers, a reproduction of Two Young Women Kissing, by Louis-Léopold Boilly, sneaks onto the screen.
So that this ridiculous and threatening universe does not crumble into parody, Musteata and Singh demanded that their cast (Zar Amir Ebrahimi, Luàna Bajrami, and Aurélie Boquien, with the voice of Vicky Krieps) perform the work as pure drama.
The humor arises, by contrast, from the absolute seriousness with which the characters accept the rules of their world.
With executive production backing from figures such as Isabelle Huppert and Julianne Moore, the film also defied industry timelines.
Refusing to cut its 36 minutes to fit festival canons, the directors imposed a "rhythm" that breathes and contracts.
A brave decision that ultimately earned them the golden statuette.

💬 Is it worth the ticket? (Opinion)
The most admirable thing about this short film lies not only in the power of the visual environment, but in the intelligence with which it enters the story. Far from appearing extravagant for mere exhibitionism, the work builds a satire that achieves something very difficult: turning everyday habits into a great source of unease. That contrast between the almost candid elegance of its images and the cold, underlying cruelty of its universe is what remains in the memory after the 36 minutes of runtime.
It is true that the proposal demands complicity. The film maintains a calculated distance, a deliberate coldness that shuns plausible explanation. For some, this approach may feel closer to a hermetically fantastic fable than to conventional emotional drama. But it is precisely that refusal to chew ideas for the viewer that constitutes its greatest virtue. Those who seek warmth or explicit answers may feel displaced; those who, on the other hand, trust in cinema as a territory of the enigmatic, will find here a quite stimulating proposal.
