I'm trying to catch up on the miniseries I've been meaning to watch, and I finally finished Under the Banner of Heaven, a production that surely outraged one of the world's largest legal sects: the Mormons. Incidentally, the creator of this series is Dustin Lance Black, who grew up in the Mormon community and knows its inner workings well, having experienced them firsthand, including the condemnation he suffered, as a follower of that religion, for being gay.

The story is an adaptation of an investigative book about a true event. Apparently, the book was quite successful (though not so much among Mormons). So, of course, this story did happen; it's an adaptation, and some creative liberties may have been taken. If you're interested in finding the book, the author is Jon Krakauer.

The plot unfolds in the Mormon capital, the state of Utah. The story investigates the brutal murder of a woman and her young son. A truly atrocious act. The murdered woman is the wife of a young Mormon man from a highly respected family in that community (the Laffertys), and we're going to unravel what happened from the moment they met and how she became a thorn in the side of the entire family.

In that sect, as in many religions, women are relegated to a secondary role. Men are the ones who make the important decisions. This is true in all religions around the world. Brenda, who comes from another city, is a bit bolder; she also comes from a Mormon family, but her ideas are more modern and liberal. This doesn't sit well with the Laffertys. The series portrays the dynamics with the wives of the other Laffertys very well.

I liked that the story also draws parallels with the origins of that sect. As the murder investigation unfolds and each member of the Lafferty family is a suspect, we see how this religion was created and how evil and bloodshed have been present since its inception. The members of this sect not only enjoy playing the victim, but they also prefer not to talk about the atrocious crimes they committed. For example, there's a reference to the massacre masterfully recreated in the miniseries American Primeval.

One of the investigators is a Mormon detective who knows the Laffertys, which adds depth to the plot, which also plays with doubt. Jeb Pyre, played by Andrew Garfield (formerly Spider-Man), is a believer. He has a wife and children. As the crime unfolds, his faith is seriously shaken. It must be incredibly difficult and frustrating for someone who professes a religion to realize so much falsehood. Furthermore, it's a community where the powerful decide what to do. They prefer to remain silent about their atrocities. That's why, for me, religion and the left are one and the same.

I loved Bill Taba's character, since he doesn't belong to that sect, so I identified with his point of view. It must be difficult not to belong to that religion in a city and state where they are the majority.

Religious fanaticism is very dangerous, and what's narrated here, based on a true story, proves it. There's a lot to discuss about the miniseries, for example, the part about the conflict between the fundamentalist branch, those who want to have as many wives as possible. There are several cases and scandals where members of this religion, especially the most fundamentalist, have been exposed for crimes of bigamy, sexual abuse, and child abuse. This religion has been quite murky since its origins.

Por ejemplo, hay una referencia a la masacre recreada magistralmente en la miniserie American Primeval.

El fanatismo religioso es muy peligroso, y lo que se narra aquí, basado en un hecho real, lo demuestra. Hay mucho que comentar sobre la miniserie, por ejemplo, la parte del enfrentamiento entre la rama fundamentalista, aquellos que quieren tener tantas esposas como sea posible. Existen varios casos y escándalos donde miembros de esa religión, especialmente los más fundamentalistas, han sido expuestos por delitos de bigamia, abuso sexual y abuso infantil. Esta religión ha sido bastante turbia desde sus orígenes.
