  1. A review of "Warrior" - one of my favorite martial arts movie, but also much more than that@aurzeq1401d

    Plot

In the elite "Sparta" tournament's "cage," two brothers who haven't spoken in 15 years come face to face again. Although for very different motives, both compete for the prize money. The share a past filled with misery and secrets from which they have each found their own ways to recover. Tommy, the crazed ex-marine, unexpectedly comes back at his father's former-alcoholic home, asking him to train him. While renowned physics professor and mild-mannered Brendan finds himself entangled in the real estate bubble that led to the US's entry into the global economic crisis in 2008. He needs to start fighting again in MMA if he wants to save his expensive home. Naturally, this costs him a suspension from work and a brief separation from his lovely wife Tess. The two boys struggled mightily to triumph in the ring while their abusive father tries to reconstruct its relationship with them.

    Why you should watch it?

Sometimes it is simpler to describe a movie by what it is not: "Warrior" is not a martial arts movie or a movie about social redemption through sports, two genres that are dear to American cinema but have already said everything they can say, despite still producing excellent films like "The Fighter." As surprising as these assertions may appear, after seeing the movie you'll discover that Gavin O'Connor has carried on where he left off with "Pride and Glory" (2008), which was an examination of family dynamics set in incredibly strange circumstances disguised as a genre movie.

    Source

Warrior starts out as a gloomy drama about a family that is no longer a family and is slaving in separate microcosms that disregard one another, but it gradually turns into a sports movie with its rituals, regulations, and occasionally clumsy and rhetorical winks. However, Warrior has a fantastic speed, and these two movies are merely a logical extension and development of one another. The savagery of its climactic meetings explodes in a location so different from the squalor of the protagonists' home in the post-industrial suburbs between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, where it starts off as sleepy and apathetic as its protagonists. Real life and the dream of another existence are on two separate planes.

If there is one thing truly effective within the film, it is the acting performances of the three leads.

    • Nick Nolte is first and foremost, with his solemn, sorry, and dejected expression. The actor is able to convey all the shame and helplessness that define his father figure in his stillness. Nolte gives us a well-balanced portrayal that displays his conflict between his "being" and his "should be"; he is tense but not irascible, serious but never serious.

    Source
    • Brendan Conlon, played by Joel Edgerton, is a different story. He has the calmest, most pleasant, and most approachable personality of all the characters. He almost seems to take a hint from the character Edgerton himself played in the stunning Animal Kingdom. They actually each stand for the "reasonable and transparent sharing" of two damaged families. The brother we want and should bet on is Brendan, just like his college students do.

    Source
    • But Tom Hardy is literally the whole movie. We witness a more open-hearted and sincere Hardy in a part that assisted in resurrecting his career. In Tommy Conlon's physique, which is a somewhat cryptic and impenetrable killing machine, he actually succeeds in portraying features of enormous fragility. He does a fantastic job of creating a contrast between his physically strong appearance and the glance that reveals his humanity and inner self.

    Conclusion

Warrior as a whole is an excellent film, which I definitely recommend you see. But of course it is not a perfect film and there are some things that could have been improved. One for example is the too much predictability that it carries from beginning to end, both at the level of the plot (which is quite clear both in content and motivation after the first 20 minutes) and also at the level of the fights, which although very beautiful to watch turn out to have very similar dynamics.

  2. Warrior "La Última Pelea" // My Experience. [Eng - Esp]@ksmith71458d

I have always liked what is different, what makes something stand out from the crowd, and that premise is usually not so easy to find in the world of cinema. This requires a lot of work for everyone involved in a cinematographic work, when starting from the director himself, everyone strives to contribute their grain of sand, to contribute to give their personal touch to the role and role assigned. And it was this week that I unexpectedly stumbled upon this 2011 film called Warrior "The Last Fight".

A work of american director Gavin O'Connor, who has a respectable cast of the Conlon brothers, Brendan (Joel Edgerton) and Tommy (Tom Hardy), whose apparently only point in common is that they are the sons of Paddy Conlon, regenerated from alcoholism, very well played by the historical actor (Nick Nolte). What I found incredible was that I started watching it without any commitment, nor with the idea of reviewing my experience with this film, which I must confess I had not yet seen; moreover, I did not even identify Tom Hardy, since he looked more corpulent than usual.

However, with the passing of the plot I was totally hooked until the end ha,ha,ha,ha. I think the fact that it is a film that is not limited to fights, but the director's expertise to combine the action of the fights at the right time; but presenting us with characters of great naturalness, with a story that moves them towards that path of entering a competition, for the need to get the juicy bag of money and thus cover their monetary requirements; something that obviously can happen to anyone.

I also found it interesting, the context in which each character moves, as it is a dysfunctional family that has almost no communication, although they recognize each other as such. And even though these boys lead their lives separately, they have a paternal heritage as experience in mixed martial arts fights. So it was Paddy who had had a taste of it, something he somehow planted in his sons before dissolving as a social nucleus. That is to say, they cannot deny that their father was the one who showed them that path.

I must emphasize the performance of Tom Hardy, who in my opinion made me identify with Tommy, with his way of fighting and acting quietly, without boasting of his tremendous physical power; also this actor never ceases to amaze me with his physical changes, demonstrating his professionalism and dedication to his work. The same happens with Brendan, who is going through a complicated economic situation and decides to risk even his life to win. Although in my opinion it was very noticeable the difference in weight with his rivals, when facing them in the octagon.

However, although Tommy seems to be haunted by negative childhood memories, he looks to his father to help him improve his performance with training. What was strange, yet appealing to me, was to see the deep drama (well structured), lead to this pair of brothers battling it out in the finale, for the ultimate prize. And while the road was much rougher for Brendan, Tommy did the same but with relative ease. Again, I was pleasantly surprised by the appearance on the scene of real stars and former MMA fighters.

Mixed martial arts legends such as Kurt Angle, Josh Rosenthal, Rashad Evans, Anthony Johnson, Erik Apple, among others, give the film that extra touch of reality. But in addition to the presence of these characters, it is remarkable the good execution of combat techniques by the actors Tom and Joel, since they make projections, hit with very convincing movements and above all, the submissions keys that Edgerton executes; so I have convinced me with their excellent work. Besides there are no good guys or bad guys, it's just a fight for a prize that they both need.

In the middle of the plot, I thought about the motivations that Brendan and Tommy have to fight for the prize; and although they are totally different needs, they have a justified reason from the point of view that they both have a talent for fighting since childhood, but the most interesting thing is that they also have an internal struggle with their past and their relationship with their father. These guys are so dedicated to combat that they surpass their own levels, but in this case, Tommy had more moral support, due to his sudden and accidental fame among his military colleagues.

Warrior is a film that left me with good feelings and the satisfaction of not having wasted my time watching it. The actor Nick Nolte received seven nominations for best supporting actor, one of them for an Oscar. The film is well crafted, without overacting or poorly executed poses, its central theme derives from everyday life situations and the fights in the cage, have great realism and execution. All these ingredients make a varied menu, which does not allow me to get bored or lose interest in the thread of the plot, I recommend it; and if you are a lover of MMA or UFC, you must see it.

Warrior (2011) - A sensational film of the year 2011.

**If you like drama and you like sports, you shouldn't miss this movie - a life lesson, which really impressed me.** **Honestly, at first i didn't have high expectations for this movie, especially since i'm not a big fan of this type of sport, but in the end i was really impressed, and the scene where Tommy and his father reconcile being the most emotional in movie. A sensational film of 2011 must not miss a real masterpiece!** **A short summary of this film production.** >*After being away from home for 14 years and working as a Marine, little Tommy Riordan returns to Pittsburgh and plans to re-enter the mixed martial arts competitions, asking his father, Paddy Conlon, to train him for to win the "Sparta" tournament and the biggest prize ever at stake in the history of the sport. Tommy's older brother Brendan Conlon has been a mixed martial arts champion in the past and retired from gender contests when he married and became the father of two children, working as a public school teacher, but his salary extremely small does not allow him to pay his mortgage and support his family, which is why he decides to return to the ring and fight for the substantial cash prize.* **The way the two brothers' story was outlined, and the fact that they ended up in the ring, seemed exceptional to me. Not to mention that anyone with a sibling should feel the movie much more intense. A movie that keeps you in suspense ... at least until the end when you actually find out they're brothers ... obviously ... the guy in the army is better prepared, a hero and fighting, like a fight machine While the other is a family man, a professional who fights only for the prize money. A dramatic film through the stories it contains and the excellent interpretation from everyone. I recommend with confidence. Happy Holidays everyone.**

  4. Warrior: A nicely made MMA film that nobody watched@netflixr1797d

I can say that nobody watched it because I am a film guy and not only had I never seen it but I didn't even know it existed. This is easy to have happen to a person these days because nobody watches network TV and unless they get really creative with their advertising, films are very likely to go by unnoticed by the masses even back in 2011 when this film was originally released.

Recently it popped up on Netflix's home page and I figured I would give it a look because the trailer was very well-done.

    unnamed.jpg src

I don't really consider myself a fan of MMA or any fighting sport for that matter, but I do know that it exists and how brutal it is. Given the rising popularity of the sport (was that the case back in 2011? - I think so) it isn't really surprising that there would be a rather large-budget film made about it. They couldn't just make this film about some dudes trying to be MMA champions though so they had to put a twist in it.

    [src](https://static.onecms.io/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2013/12/warrior.jpg)

The twist in this situation is that the two guys that end up being the warriors in an MMA tournament with a troubled past and their father (played by Nick Nolte) is also a wrestling expert of some sort. Tommy (Tom Hardy) and Brendon (Joel Edgerton) play the brothers that end up joining the same MMA tournament where the top prize is $5 million. Their reasons for entering are very different though.

Brendon is a high-school physics teacher who is suddenly in a bad situation financially because of a surgery that one of his daughters needed to have. He is about to lose his house and he joins the contest to make money to cover that. Tommy on the other hand seems to want to enter just because he is enraged all the time and wants to beat people up. I'm not sure about this because I skipped a lot of the dialogue scenes and just kind of filled in the blanks on my own.

    [src](https://jshmoviestuff.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Warrior_Joel-Edgerton-580x243.jpg)

When Brendon starts turning up to school with cuts and bruises on his face, it is found out by the school that he is fighting on an amateur level and he is suspended by the school for some reason. This all seems quite impractical to me but whatever, it is necessary for the story I guess.

I watched this film with a friend who actually is a pretty big MMA fan and he was explaining to me that the things that were happening in the ring were really unlikely to happen in real MMA. People getting thrown off the wall and tossed around the place doesn't happen very often in real fights because both fighters weight about the same or exactly the same so this is very unlikely to happen ever, he said. In Warrior this happens all the time.

    [src](https://image-cdn.essentiallysports.com/wp-content/uploads/Kurt-Angle-warrior.jpg)

When Brendon has to face an undefeated Russian in the semi-finals in the tournament I was thinking to myself "that guy looks familiar..." and when I saw the credits it turns out that it is WWE wrestler Kurt Angle. I always liked that guy so it is good that he is (or was) getting some work. Dude is absolutely jacked for someone his age.

There are also a bunch of other real-life MMA fighters in the film and this was probably done to try to attract fans of the UFC. Apparently it didn't work though because this film was "in and out" in the theaters and actually lost money. Maybe they are attempting to get some of that investment back by selling it to Netflix so late although I can't imagine they would pay very much for a non-blockbuster that is a decade old.

    Should I watch it?

For me, a non fight fan, I found it enjoyable for different reasons than my friend, the fight fan did. He laughed at a lot of it because it was so impractical but me, not knowing much about the sport was able to enjoy it a bit more because the realism of it all wasn't really important to me because I am ignorant of these things. While we did skip though some of the sequences of dialogue that we found to be excessive at points, we both found this to be a good film although it is rather predictable what the outcome is going to be.

I think that most people will enjoy this one but you might need to have the remote in hand to skip some of the "talky bits." We found it kind of fun to look at the preview windows and just kind of guess what the story was based on that... turns out we were correct about a lot of it.

A masterpiece of screenwriting this film is not, but I think that most people will enjoy this one regardless. I know we did.
