Where was I when this movie came out? ¿En dónde estaba yo cuando salió esta película?
This must have happened to you at some point: you're scrolling on Instagram or TikTok and suddenly a one-minute clip appears, sometimes less, that grabs you and it turns out to be a scene from a movie. You immediately look up information about the film and add it to your list of movies to watch. Many times I recognize the scene from films I've seen before, but sometimes it's about productions I didn't know existed and I leave them waiting. However, this time I was so surprised that I looked up the film and watched it that same night.
Esto tiene que haberles pasado alguna vez: están scrolleando en Instagram o TikTok y de pronto aparece un clip de un minuto, a veces menos, que los atrapa y resulta que es una escena de una película. Inmediatamente buscan información sobre el film y lo agregan a su lista de cintas por ver. Muchas veces reconozco la escena a partir de películas que he visto antes, pero a veces se trata de producciones que no sabía que existían y las dejo pendientes. Sin embargo, en esta oportunidad mi sorpresa fue tal que busqué la peli y la vi esa misma noche.
The scene was simple: a girl is in a video store looking for a movie to rent to take to a sick friend and there's a guy, who's the one who runs the place, who gives her some recommendations. Because of the aesthetics of the scene and the fact that the scene involves a movie rental business, I mentally placed it in the 1990s or early 2000s. But what caught my attention about the clip was the actors involved - Cillian Murphy and Lucy Liu. Wait, hold on, you're telling me that Peaky Blinders's Thomas Shelby, Arkham Asylum's Dr. Crane, Robert Oppenheimer himself, starred in a romantic comedy with Charllie's Angels's Alex Munday or, better yet, Kill Bill's lethal O-Ren Ishii? I said, “I've got to see this”, so that same night I set out to see Watching the Detectives, which tells the story of Neil (Murphy), a die-hard movie fan who owns a video store specializing in film noir and cult films that you can't get almost anywhere. On a business level, Neil has a challenge: to survive in an economy where the movie rental business is being dominated by the big Blockbuster-type chains against which his small store can't compete. On a personal level his challenge is people. Yes, Neil has some friends who also love movies (one of them is played by a very young Jason Sudeikis), but, having just ended his last relationship with a girl he didn't really love, he spends most of his time in the store or on his couch watching cult films, black and white classics or weird stories over and over again.
La escena era sencilla: una chica está en una video tienda buscando una película para rentar y llevársela a un amigo enfermo y hay un chico, que es quien atiende el lugar, que le da algunas recomendaciones. Por la estética de la escena y el hecho de que la escena involucre un negocio para rentar una película la situé mentalmente en los años noventa o principios del dos mil. Pero lo que llamó mi atención del clip fue los actores involucrados: Cillian Murphy y Lucy Liu. Espera, espera, ¿me estás diciendo que el Thomas Shelby de Peaky Blinders, el Dr. Crane del Arkham Asylum, el mismísimo Robert Oppenheimer, protagonizó una comedia romántica con Alex Munday de Charllie's Angels o, mejor aun, con la letal O-Ren Ishii de Kill Bill? "Esto tengo que verlo", dije, así que esa misma noche me dispuse a ver Watching the Detectives, en donde se cuenta la historia de Neil (Murphy), un fanático empedernido del cine que es dueño de un videoclub especializado en cine negro y películas de culto de esas que no se consiguen casi en ningún lugar. A nivel empresarial, Neil tiene un desafío: sobrevivir en una economía en la que el negocio del alquiler de películas está siendo dominado por las grandes cadenas tipo Blockbuster contra las que su pequeña tienda no puede competir. A nivel personal su desafío es la gente. Sí, Neil tiene algunos amigos que también aman el cine (uno de ellos es interpretado por un jovencísimo Jason Sudeikis), pero, después de haber terminado su última relación con una chica a quien no amaba realmente, se pasa casi todo su tiempo en el negocio o en su sofá viendo una y otra vez películas de culto, clásicos en blanco y negro o historias raras.
Then, one day a beautiful, unpredictable and somewhat strange woman appears in the video store and catches Neil's attention. She's Violet (Lucy Liu), a whirlwind of a woman who comes to turn his life upside down, only he doesn't know it yet. Little by little, as they meet more and more often, Neil learns how reckless, adventurous and unpredictable this girl is, who at first won't even give him her address or phone number. The mystery embodied by Violet, her sense of humor, her witticisms and that big sign she carries with her that says Danger trap Neil, who lets himself be led - not without doubts - towards a path of no return.
Entonces, un día cualquiera aparece en la video tienda una mujer hermosa, de carácter imprevisible y algo extraña que llama la atención de Neil. Se trata de Violet (Lucy Liu), un torbellino en forma de mujer que viene a poner su vida de cabeza, sólo que él todavía no lo sabe. Poco a poco, conforme se van viendo más veces, Neil va conociendo lo temeraria, aventurera e impredecible que es esta chica que al principio ni siquiera le da su dirección ni su número de teléfono. El misterio que encarna Violet, su sentido del humor, sus ocurrencias y ese gran aviso que lleva encima y que dice Peligro atrapan a Neil quien se deja llevar - no sin dudas - hacia un camino de no retorno.
It's not exactly the Good Guy and Bad Girl dynamic, because Neil, while sweet and very respectful, isn't exactly a good guy. And rather than Bad, Violet turns out to be chaotic, adventurous and stimulating. He enjoys sitting around watching movies, as he always has, and living vicariously through the screen, while she doesn't even own a TV. Violet's motto seems to be “Life is out there” and that's why she goes out to live it, to have an adventure every day and get involved in dangerous, illegal, immoral, unconventional situations, into which she then drags Neil. It could be said that Violet has an aversion to boredom, while Neil enjoys the calm. However, there's also another reading: this dreamy moviegoer now has the opportunity to live inside a movie and experience real emotions, not by empathy with any character but by being the character himself. Will Neil be able to get out of his comfort zone and venture to live life with Hurricane Violet? Or is he too afraid of getting into serious trouble and will he prefer the safety of his movies? That is what is told in the 90 minutes of Watching the Detectives through a script that - traditional to the genre and the time - presents absurd, crazy situations, misunderstandings and allows us to get to know the protagonists who are exchanging values with each other or who are discovering that despite their obvious differences there are more things in common between them than they think. Violet will bring out the more reckless and rockstar side of Neil, while he, with his honesty and credulity, will manage to break down the walls that the girl has built around her heart. In other words: a typical romcom.
No es exactamente la dinámica de Chico Bueno y Chica Mala, porque Neil, aunque dulce y muy respetuoso, no es exactamente un chico bueno. Y más que Mala, Violet resulta ser caótica, aventurera y estimulante. Él disfruta sentarse a ver películas, como siempre lo ha hecho, y vivir a través de la pantalla, mientras que ella ni siquiera tiene un televisor. El lema de Violet parece ser "La vida está allí afuera" y es por eso que sale a vivirla, a tener una aventura cada día e involucrarse en situaciones peligrosas, ilegales, inmorales, nada convencionales, a las que luego arrastra a Neil. Podría decirse que Violet le tiene aversión al aburrimiento, mientras Neil disfruta de la calma. Sin embargo, también hay otra lectura: este cinéfilo soñador tiene ahora la oportunidad de vivir dentro de una película y vivir emociones reales, no por empatía con algún personaje sino siendo él el personaje, ¿podrá Neil salir de su zona de confort y aventurarse a vivir la vida junto al huracán Violet? ¿o le teme demasiado a verse envuelto en algún problema serio y preferirá la seguridad de sus películas? Eso es lo que se cuenta en los 90 minutos de Watching the Detectives a través de un guion que - tradicional al género y a la época - presenta situaciones absurdas, disparatadas, malos entendidos y nos permite ir conociendo a los protagonistas que se van intercambiando valores entre sí o que van descubriendo que a pesar de sus evidentes diferencias existen más cosas en común entre ellos de las que creen. Violet sacará el lado más temerario y rockstar de Neil, mientras que él, con su honestidad y credulidad, logrará derribar los muros que la chica ha construido alrededor de su corazón. Es decir: una típica romcom.
You probably already suspected this, but I'll clarify: Watching the Detectives isn't a great film. It's quite predictable, and if we objectively analyze the direction, the script, the technical resources, and so on, the film doesn't shine, and I can think of dozens of better options. The charm of the story isn't there, and although—in my case—it was very entertaining to see Cillian Murphy and Lucy Liu in a project like this, I think what has made this film a favorite for some people is an interesting aspect of the story: what the characters represent.
Probablemente ya lo sospechen, pero lo voy a aclarar: Watching the Detectives no es una gran película. Es bastante predecible y si analizamos de forma objetiva la dirección, el guion, recursos técnicos y demás, la cinta no brilla y se me ocurren decenas de opciones mejores. El encanto de la historia no está allí y aunque - en mi caso - fue muy entretenido ver a Cillian Murphy y a Lucy Liu en un proyecto como este, creo que lo que ha hecho que esta película sea la favorita de algunas personas es un aspecto interesante de la historia: lo que los personajes representan.
If you love movies and hang out in film clubs, watching classics and cult films, your initial reaction will be to identify with Neil, so the narrative may make you reflect on going out and living your own life. A cinephile is a critic, an observer, someone who feels and contemplates his life through the lives of others. For her part, Violet is an actress without a stage - perhaps the truest kind of actress one can be - who condemns boredom and squeezes every possibility of adventure out of life even if her recklessness is dangerous. It's only natural that being a Neil, someone would be attracted to a Violet who embodies the qualities of her cinematic heroes and heroines; in turn, it also makes sense that someone who is always going full speed ahead like Violet would be drawn to someone more passive who plays along, who seems to love her for being that way and who never ceases to be surprised and stimulated by her energy. Being these two characters so opposite, but so honest, one ends up feeling identified a little more with one of them and attracted to the other. We know there are many social archetypes and every head is a world, but it's interesting to wonder, during and after the film, in a world of just Neils and Violets, who am I, am I the passive observer of the adventure and my own life, or am I the tormentor of boredom, the whirlwind that won't stop? Despite its narrative shortcomings, Watching the Detectives is a good recommendation for lovers of romcoms, cinema in general, Woody Allen movies and dangerous leading ladies, have any of you seen this film? Si amas el cine y te la pasas en cineclubs, viendo clásicos y películas de culto, tu reacción inicial será identificarte con Neil, por lo que puede que la narración te haga reflexionar sobre salir a vivir tu propia vida. Un cinéfilo es un crítico, un observador, alguien que siente y contempla su vida a través de la vida de otros. Por su parte, Violet es una actriz sin escenario - acaso el tipo más real de actriz que se puede ser - que condena el aburrimiento y le exprime a la vida cada posibilidad de aventura aunque su temeridad sea peligrosa. Es natural que siendo un Neil, alguien se sienta atraído por una Violet que encarna las cualidades de sus héroes y heroínas cinematográficas; a su vez, también tiene sentido que alguien que siempre va a toda velocidad como Violet se acerque a alguien más pasivo que le sigue la corriente, que parece amarla por ser así y que no deja de sorprenderse y estimularse con su energía. Siendo estos dos personajes tan opuestos, pero tan honestos, uno acaba por sentirse identificado un poco más con uno de ellos y atraído por el otro. Sabemos que hay muchos arquetipos sociales y que cada cabeza es un mundo, pero es interesante preguntarse, durante y después de la película, en un mundo de sólo Neils y Violets, ¿quién soy yo? ¿soy el observador pasivo de la aventura y de mi propia vida? ¿o soy el verdugo del aburrimiento, el torbellino que no se detiene? A pesar de sus deficiencias narrativas, Watching the Detectives es una buena recomendación para los amantes de las romcoms, del cine en general, de las películas de Woody Allen y de las protagonistas peligrosas, ¿alguno de ustedes ha visto esta cinta?
