En una época y lugar en donde existe la lucha, la alegria y el odio, surgirá una historia de un amor imposible... "West Side Story"
Hace un mes realicé una reseña sobre un film musical estrenado el año pasado en dónde se cuenta la historia de una gran comunidad latina que reside en la ciudad de Nueva York, una historia feliz, en dónde el amor, la lucha por sentir parte de un nuevo país y alcanzar los sueños era lo que define a este buen film basado en una obra musical, en ese mismo momento decidí que debería ver los otros dos films musicales con gran importancia en los premios del cine que se han entregado y se entregarán en este año; estás películas con grandes producciones, actuaciones muy bien dirigidas nos traen historias en las cuales una es real y otras tiene muchas situaciones en las cuales podemos tener alguna similitud con nuestras vidas y es por eso que en esta publicación haré la reseña de un remake de una obra que se creó hace 65 años.

In a time and place where there is struggle, joy and hatred, a story of an impossible love will emerge... "West Side Story"
A month ago I made a review of a musical film released last year where the story of a large Latino community residing in New York City is told, a happy story, where love, the struggle to feel part of a new country and achieve dreams was what defines this good film based on a musical work, at that moment I decided that I should see the other two musical films with great importance in the film awards that have been delivered and will be delivered this year; these films with great productions, very well directed performances bring us stories in which one is real and others have many situations in which we can have some similarity with our lives and that is why in this publication I will review a remake of a play that was created 65 years ago.
En "West Side Story" veremos cómo era la vida en Manhattan en el año 1957, una época dura para las personas con pocos recursos económicos y para quienes querían alcanzar el llamado Sueño Americano, toda esta presión y lucha constante generaba un ambiente tenso entre dos pandillas de jóvenes, una conformada por jóvenes blancos llamados The Jets y otra de jóvenes provenientes de Puerto Rico llamados Sharks; de este enfrentamiento por el control de las calles de la isla de Manhattan, nacerá el amor incondicional entre María y Tony, una chica latina y un joven americano, un amor imposible por todo el odio que rodea a ambas comunidades, pero ellos harán lo posible para que su amor pueda prevalecer y así cumplir sus sueños de estar juntos por siempre.
In "West Side Story" we will see how life was in Manhattan in 1957, a hard time for people with few economic resources and for those who wanted to achieve the so-called American Dream, all this pressure and constant struggle generated a tense atmosphere between two youth gangs, one made up of young whites called The Jets and another of young people from Puerto Rico called Sharks; From this confrontation for the control of the streets of the island of Manhattan, will be born the unconditional love between Maria and Tony, a Latin girl and a young American, an impossible love because of all the hatred that surrounds both communities, but they will do everything possible so that their love can prevail and thus fulfill their dreams of being together forever.
Seguramente para una producción hecha hace muchos años y que cuenta con una versión cinematográfica realizada en 1961, debió ser transmitida en alguna cadena televisiva, pero siendo completamente sincero nunca vi ese film y tampoco tenía conocimiento de la historia; ahora con respecto a los temas musicales creo que al ser una producción exitosa, en algún otro film o serie de TV pude escuchar alguno de los temas originalmente escritos para esta obra y me sorprendió porque inmediatamente tuve noción de la importancia de esta completa obra para el mundo del entrenamiento. El guion de este film fue escrito por Tony Kushner que ha escrito obras teatrales, films, libros y ha ganado diferentes e importantes premios en su carrera; tal vez muchos piensen que adaptar esta obra pudo ser fácil y aunque tengo entendido que el guion para el film es muy parecido al que se hizo en la obra original, pienso que el trabajo hecho por Kushner es el adecuado, me gusta como fluye cada transición entre una conversación y el comienzo de alguna canción, eso es muy importante para este film porque se ve todo muy natural; la historia es un gran drama y tal como me sucedió con "In The Heights" la parte de la historia enfocada en los latinos me sentí identificado por cómo enfrentan la vida a pesar de las dificultades.
Una de las mayores atracciones en este film es contar con nada más y nada menos que Steven Spielberg en la dirección, no descubro absolutamente nada al decir que él es uno de los mejores directores del mundo, para eso están grandes obras de cualquier tipo que perduran en el tiempo, pero en esta película todo es especial, desde las primeras escenas, en el momento de ver edificios en ruinas y un grupo de jóvenes buscando problemas, un baile en el gimnasio, una declaración de amor o en una mortal pelea cada una de esas escenas y otras más son impresionantes, en realidad todas; el trabajo de Spielberg con la cámara no da la perspectiva de estar en el mejor lugar para ver toda la vida de estos personajes y eso es especial porque no hay desperdicio de ninguna toma en las más de dos horas de duración de este film, es un completo regalo cinematográfico que nos da este gran director.
Surely for a production made many years ago and that has a film version made in 1961, it must have been broadcast on some television network, but being completely honest I never saw that film and had no knowledge of the story; now with respect to the musical themes I think that being a successful production, in some other film or TV series I could hear some of the themes originally written for this play and I was surprised because I immediately had a notion of the importance of this complete work for the world of training. The script of this film was written by Tony Kushner who has written plays, films, books and has won different and important awards in his career; maybe many people think that adapting this play could be easy and although I understand that the script for the film is very similar to the original play, I think the work done by Kushner is the right one, I like how each transition between a conversation and the beginning of a song flows, that is very important for this film because everything looks very natural; the story is a great drama and just as it happened to me with "In The Heights" the part of the story focused on Latinos I felt identified by how they face life despite the difficulties.
One of the biggest attractions in this film is to have nothing more and nothing less than Steven Spielberg in the direction, I discover absolutely nothing to say that he is one of the best directors in the world, for that are great works of any kind that endure over time, but in this film everything is special, from the first scenes, at the time of seeing buildings in ruins and a group of young people looking for trouble, a dance in the gym, a declaration of love or in a deadly fight each of these scenes and more are impressive, actually all of them; Spielberg's work with the camera does not give the perspective of being in the best place to see the whole life of these characters and that is special because there is no waste of any shot in the more than two hours of duration of this film, it is a complete cinematic gift that gives us this great director.
Las actuaciones están a la altura de esta producción, en especial la de tres actores, ellos son Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort y Ariana DeBose; los dos primeros son los protagonistas de esta historia, ellos interpretan a "María" y "Tony", su relación se convierte en una vía de escape para todo lo que viven día a día en Manhattan, pero parece que no es suficiente porque quienes los rodea parece que tienen el poder para arruinar el amor que ellos sienten; la actuación de ambos es muy buena, tienen gran química y se complementan muy bien, su primer encuentro en la historia es muy importante y es un claro ejemplo de lo importante que son entre ellos, me gustó mucho su trabajo; ahora no hay duda que la verdadera estrella de este film es DeBose, su interpretación de "Anita" es uno de los puntos altos del film, creo que ella refleja la esperanza y las posibilidades de poder encajar en un nuevo lugar, ella es una mujer independiente, fuerte, decidida a hacer lo posible por tener una vida mejor y todo eso lo interpreta está buena actriz y es por eso que su trabajo ha sido reconocido al ser nominada a los grandes premios del cine.
The performances are at the height of this production, especially that of three actors, they are Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort and Ariana DeBose; the first two are the protagonists of this story, they play "Maria" and "Tony", their relationship becomes an escape route for everything they live day by day in Manhattan, but it seems that it is not enough because those around them seem to have the power to ruin the love they feel; the acting of both is very good, they have great chemistry and complement each other very well, their first meeting in the story is very important and is a clear example of how important they are to each other, I really liked their work; now there is no doubt that the real star of this film is DeBose, her interpretation of "Anita" is one of the high points of the film, I think she reflects the hope and the possibilities of being able to fit in a new place, she is an independent woman, strong, determined to do her best to have a better life and all this is interpreted by this good actress and that is why her work has been recognized by being nominated for major film awards.
West Side Story es una película maravillosa, es entretenida con muy buena historia que explora como situaciones externas pueden afectar la forma de vivir de cada persona, me gusta que no tenga un villano en especial sino que sea el odio, quien motive a qué cada personaje cometa actos con un desenlace grave; como historia romántica y dramática es excelente y como musical pienso que Spielberg aumenta el nivel y eso la hace perfecta, para ser sincero no soy experto en este género en el cine, pero en cada escena de este film es muy bien hecha, no se ve como un vídeo musical y si como algo muy bien hecho y único; la música que hasta puedo decir que es un importante protagonista hace que la historia fluya muy bien y es por eso que no existe ningún problema en los diálogos ni mucho menos en los cambios cuando se pasa de una conversación normal en un apartamento a un gran baile a mitad de una calle. Está es una de las mejores producciones que he visto en este año y me parece excelente que sea tomada en cuenta para competir por los grandes premios, lástima que con todo lo ocurrido con la venta de 20th Century Fox a Disney no existió la promoción necesaria para que tuviera un éxito en la taquilla y a pesar de que sea difícil que gane como mejor film, tal vez pueda ganar en mejor dirección y obtener el premio como mejor actriz de reparto en dónde Ariana DeBose es la clara favorita.
West Side Story is a wonderful movie, it is entertaining with a very good story that explores how external situations can affect the way of living of each person, I like that it does not have a special villain but it is hate, who motivates each character to commit acts with a serious outcome; as a romantic and dramatic story is excellent and as a musical I think that Spielberg raises the level and that makes it perfect, to be honest I am not an expert in this genre in the cinema, but in every scene of this film is very well done, it does not look like a music video and if as something very well done and unique; the music, which I can even say is an important protagonist, makes the story flow very well and that is why there is no problem in the dialogues and even less in the changes when it goes from a normal conversation in an apartment to a big dance in the middle of a street. This is one of the best productions I have seen this year and I think it is excellent that it is taken into account to compete for the big awards, too bad that with everything that happened with the sale of 20th Century Fox to Disney there was not the necessary promotion to have a success at the box office and although it is difficult to win as best film, maybe it can win in best direction and get the award for best supporting actress where Ariana DeBose is the clear favorite.
